HomeTVABCCould Going Half Hour Save General Hospital? Jillian Bowe June 6, 2011 48 Comments Has General Hospital dodged a bullet (no pun intended)? TV Guide's Michael Logan spoke with an ABC representative, who shared some information about the status of the sudser. According to the rep: We hope it will encourage them to watch and support GH, the rep says. We will consider all options, such as making The Chew and The Revolution a half hour each, or making The Revolution and GH a half hour. This all happens a year and half from now. We are going to do our best to keep everybody happy. 48 Responses katkit June 7, 2011 LMAO right. Does Logan or anyone on this site actually believe this BS from the “Rep” about wanting to keep everyone happy. Sounds like they want to placate people until they are ready to ax GH next year. And did you have to put a picture with Burton on here with this? Ugh. No offense can’t stand the guy or the character he plays. Log in to Reply appleridge June 7, 2011 In a interview with soap vet Robin Mattson years ago she talked about when GL went to an hour (she played hope) they had to redo all the contracts and she quit. Now im assuming ABC would have to do the same if GH went back to 30 mins. Do u think they’d want all that hassle. This is just spin. Log in to Reply Soap_Stud June 7, 2011 All of a sudden 30 mins is a viable option?!? Why wasn’t it an option for AMC/OLTL? Thirty minute soaps make sense to me, in today’s economy with the ratings what they are in daytime. However, the folks at ABC daytime are difficult to believe. The beyond bloated Steve Burton and his brain-dead robot character Jason are pretty much the main reasons I despise “General Hospital” these days. Other than that, it’s been a pretty good show as of late. ~ Kevin in downtown Tulsa Log in to Reply Susan Hunter June 7, 2011 [quote=appleridge]ABC Is Trying To save Face Here. I feel bad for the fans who are going to buy into it and think GH has a chance. The show has essentially been cancelled. There are no half hour plans. Wasn’t it Brian Frons who said, about the cancellation of “Port Charles”, that the half hour format was no longer viable? The focus on this one note moron has been detrimental to the show. And I agree. No one should buy this nonsense. Why ABC and Frons can’t be upfront and honest about their intentions is beyond me….Maybe they think they’ll take the PR hit for now and in due time, the audience will “get over it.” I think these morons are sadly mistaken. The ephinany came to me during the Davis celebration for Sam recently. As a total aside, I love those four Davis women and whenever I watch them I feel like I am watching a primetime dramedy. Anyways, the moment Jason walks in the party is over. Really? The mute man of the house comes in and everyone has to leave? That seems healthy. Sam some advice: go eat, pray, love. Log in to Reply TV Gord June 7, 2011 Utterly ridiculous. Half a show means half the commercials. That means half the money coming in. Even if they cut half the cast, they’d have practically the same number of workers behind the scenes, so how on earth would they save money? It makes no sense at all. How stupid do they think we are? Right now, they need us and our support for their new daytime shows to be a success. So yea, they will say just about anything. Log in to Reply fmhall18 June 7, 2011 This is strictly a PR move on Disney/ABC. I don’t buy what they are selling, and I hope that the soap fans don’t believe this. If Disney/ABC was so concerned about their soaps, they could have dropped all of their soaps to 30 minutes and still could have a new 30 minute show and The View. Look at the math, ABC control 4 hours of daytime. The View, AMC, OLTL, and GH’s hours. If they dropped all of their soaps time to 30 minutes, they could have still gave up one hour for Katie Couric and still had all 3 soaps, and one new 30 minute show. This setup equals to 2 hours plus The View and ABC could have still gave the stations the extra hour for Katie Couric. This is all a ploy. Don’t believe what Disney/ ABC is saying. Steve is truly one of the sweetest, most down-to-Earth people you’d ever want to meet. All his co-stars describe him as willing to give you the shirt off his back. There’s nothing wrong with disliking an actor, but I’m sure if you guys met Steve in person you’d fall madly in love with him as I have. And when did it become acceptable on this website to make fun of an actor’s PHYSICAL appearance??? Steve is not “bloated.” He works out and most of us gain weight naturally as we age since our metabolisms typically slow down. God forbid any of us be less than PERFECT!! Sheesh!!!! Log in to Reply californiaguy888 June 7, 2011 Why on Earth would anyone believe what ABC has to say ? Yah, right, they are truly going to consider a half hour of GH or a half hour of two programs that haven’t even seen the light of day? ABC, gimme a break. I’m surprised they didn’t announce that they would consider a show called ” ABC Daytime Superstar Movie”.. similar to what they did on Saturday mornings back in the day. ONE super spectacular daytime show featuring Erica Cane, Sonny Corinthos, Katie Couric, Whoopi Goldberg, Clint Buchanan, all on one TV program. ABC must think their audience will fall for anything. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vQlLCPCHoQ Log in to Reply keanna June 7, 2011 RIGHT BACK AT YA, ALSTONBOY!!!!  For you I would also add funny, charming, and always on your A game!!! The sad thing is that people will believe that ABC would actually consider making GH a half hour, when we all know the truth!!! Log in to Reply marknsprmo June 7, 2011 I think all of the soaps should restructure and repackage themselves as two half hour shows. Just split the cast in half (in GH case mafia on one side, hospital and quartermains on the other). One half hour show is too expensive to produce but two half hour shows in the same location, is just as cheap as a one hour show AND they can be worked into the schedule side by side or seperately. That would double the number of soaps on air, it would accommodate scheduling, if someone liked say the hospital stories but not the mob, they could watch the hospital ahow (which could improve ratings for some shows). The shows could also have alot of cross over characters like they started to with Port Charles. A half hour a day is alot easier to schedule in for a busy lifestyle. And if you like the whole hour of show you still can watch both shows. Log in to Reply njtaurian June 7, 2011 So if this is an option for GH, why not have the same “option” for AMC and/or OLTL??? If they really must have their damn talk shows, then why not go with a schedule like this: 12:30 – All My Children 1:00 – One Life to Live 1:30 – General Hospital 2:00 – The Chew 2:30 – The Revolution 3:00 – The Katie Couric Show OR 1:00 – All My Children 1:30 – One Life to Live 2:00 – General Hospital 2:30 – The Chew 3:00 – The Revolution 4:00 – The Katie Couric Show Log in to Reply appleridge June 7, 2011 Because Its just TALK Nothing more Log in to Reply AHeart4Fiction June 7, 2011 Yeah GH is blowing steam up my bum and I don’t like it. I’d much rather them say GH is on shaky ground and we don’t know what the hell were going to do with it. Log in to Reply Mione134 June 7, 2011 ABC is going to feel the wrath soon. Log in to Reply cheryl85 June 7, 2011 Bahaha! ABC just keeps putting wishful thinking into the hopes of their remaining soap audience. Seriously? Why quit the continuing serenade and simply keep it real please! If you wasn’t going to give the same commitment to OLTL/AMC, there is no way you will do this for GH. Log in to Reply Cyberologist June 7, 2011 I’m with soap stud so now they can do thirty min for Oh holier than thou GH but wouldn’t do it for the other two? Frons favoritism never ceases to amaze me re: GH the from the marketing, branding to the actors, the storylines everything the whole shabang . I say shoot the horse and put it out its misery…GH is cooked let it die if they were seriously trying to save this show Frons and Guza wouldn’t have written it in the ground…its a sad replica of a great soap….Also how much would they save monetarily producing a thirty min (19 or so with commericals) that’s like a webisode almost. I agree they are still playing the lying game…reality tells me this is a bunch of bull. Again Sweeney wants ABC out of the soap business that’s it period. She does not want soap operas 30 minutes or no it will still be a soap opera. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Cheryl rumors are already out here Insider’ Lounge (and this Insider has been spot on) so I’ll take this one with a full grain of salt. GH is done by July 2012…The Mouse ordered monumental shifts from top to bottom for ABC – daypart shifted first – primetime fans, watch out next year! What PR spin not telling you – Starting with 2013 season, affiliates can “opt out” of Chew and Revolution if they pick replacements from Sweeney’s syndicated stable (3 shows rec’d development funding). There is NO plan to syndicate GH so it won’t be a replacement option for ANY slots – anyone telling you GH could just slide into OLTL’s slot is a low level source unaware of this deal with affiliates! Affiliates taking back GH’s slot was only the start – by 2014 affiliates will own back all 3 slots – ABCD shifts to all syndicated afternoon! GH – it’s OVAH – sadly as I heard back in February Disney ordered complete shutdown of all soap production – it’s all shutdown July 2012. GH fans were handed a deck STACKED against them today – that’s the sad truth! ABCD PR spun today fans would control GH’s fate – but GH can’t win another slot no matter if ratings fare better than Chew or Revolution – those shows already have cheaper replacements developing in the wings. Log in to Reply THEBEST June 7, 2011 Ugh, just cut the bullshit. ABC needs to quit lying and admit that GH is gone come Sept, 2012. Say what you want about Les Moonves & CBS, but at least they were truthful about canceling their soaps. As soon as GL was canceled, Moonves said that they gave ATWT their last pickup. From that point, it was up to P&G to find a new home for the show, but they been gave up on it. So, that lead to CBS doing the same. I refuse to believe that GH will go to half an hour. If that’s the case, they could have just cut AMC and tested the 30 minute format on OLTL. If that didn’t work for them, then cancel that too. I bet ABC is starting to realize that they bet on the wrong horse when it came to GH. Their bottom line would look a lot better if they spared OLTL and moved it to LA in AMC’s old studio come Sept… Log in to Reply KarlWriter June 7, 2011 I urge all ABC daytime viewers to not watch The Chew or The Revolution or Couric – make them flounder in the ratings and show ABC our strength. We should be tired of some executive of telling us want we should be viewing. ABC – an acronym for About to Burn and Crash. I don’t believe the network understands that the loyal soap viewers it attracted with “love in the afternoon” will never watch the new shows. I work each day and tape the soap to watch in the evening. I won’t be wasting my time to record Couric or any reality show about food and weight loss. Sorry ABC, execs, you have killed your network. I have already stopped watching the local news on the ABC affiliate in Philadelphia and will never return. Once the soaps are gone, I am turning to CBS for such fare. I urge all viewers to abandon ABC in daytime and prime time to show your support. Strength in numbers – we have until September 2012 to express our views. Log in to Reply MPS June 7, 2011 Someone mentioned for primetime watchers to beware next, couldn’t agree more. The only ABC show I watch in prime time is Castle (cant’ stand reality dreck), and from the comment made by the new guy about why they didn’t pick up the show Poe, I already can tell he doesn’t like Castle…you know, an intelligent, witty, interesting show to watch, and it will be gone. Hope they get Castle and Beckett together this year before the axe falls… ABC is going to be a wasteland of reality TV, making mock celebrities out of some of the trashiest people. Good thing I like to read. Books are highly more entertaining than reality junk. Log in to Reply jockteen10 June 7, 2011 I refuse to believe anything that comes out of the mouths of these liars. Log in to Reply appleridge June 7, 2011 Also They have 14 months to create 15 more pilots just in case the chew or revolution tank. Gh will not more slots, its DEAD Log in to Reply jmoney June 7, 2011 It really is simple folks. If we all love Soaps and GH as much as we say we do, and are absolutely devastated by the prospect of losing, then the power lies witin us. Turn on your TVs. Drive those ratings up. Help GH post a number that the execs simply cannot ignore. The ratings are what they listen to most. If GH was consistantly draw a 3.0+ going into September, there’s no way it is pulled. If you’re not willing to turn on your TVs to save it, what’s the point of complaining about it’s exit. Log in to Reply RealityCheck 33 June 7, 2011 It’s only a matter of time before ABC pulls the plug on GENERAL HOSPITAL. Tick-tock, tick-tock…. Log in to Reply piqueroi June 9, 2011 Of course ABC is lying … their greed as well as promoting phoney surveys about the desires of daytime TV viewers are outrageous. Brian Frons and Anne Sweeney only want to dupe daytime fans into silence so their contemptible low-budget talk/reality shows can slip into place and evade the same heartless extermination ABC has used on soap operas. Hopefully no one will fall for their outrageous prevarications and ALL their daytime offerings will drown in the ratings tank as soon as the soaps are gone.
