Katie Couric Talk Show Takes General Hospital Timeslot!

It's official. Katie Couric is heading to ABC Daytime, and taking General Hospital's 3 pm timeslot!  Couric will produce and host her own talk show which will be nationally syndicated starting Sept. 2012. The journalist will also join ABC News' team. Disney/ABC Television Group and co-chair of Disney Media Networks' Anne Sweeney stated:

Katie Couric is one of television’s iconic figures and we are thrilled to have forged such an exciting partnership with her. We look forward to having Katie join the best News team in the business, and to working with her to create a dynamic and successful talk show franchise.

Eight ABC-owned stations in Chicago, Fresno, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia and Raleigh/Durham have already cleared the show for the GH slot. As previously speculated, ABC will give the last hour of its daytime programming block back to affiliates in Sep. 2012.

According to an ABC News press release, the network "continues to support “General Hospital,” and the plans to launch “The Chew” in September of this year and “The Revolution” in January 2012."

Um...yeah, some support, giving up GH's longterm timeslot. So much for "Love in the Afternoon." Industry pundits are betting GH's last shot at survival is the failure of either The Chew of The Revolution, which would allow the serial to presumably be moved into one of those timeslots.

I'd rather they try a *good* game show in GH's old slot. LMAD is dreadful, and I would love to see a decent game show challenge that dreck masquerading as Let's Make a Deal.

As for Katie Couric's new show, I'm not that interested, but would tune in if she had a topic or guest on I wanted to see. I have never watched GH, so KC's show would be the first time I tuned into ABC 2:00 pm central time.

General Hospital is done. Oh ABC might say we'll keep a 30 minute version, but that will fail rather quickly, and then it will be done. Amazing to see ABC kill its daytime programming. View, chew, and revolt then Katie!

Good-bye ABC.

I suspect Katie won't be smiling for too long - she failed every time since she left Today and I predict she won't succeed in daytime either. Those of us who seek to be entertained after a long day at work with a soap certainly won't be recording her blab fest....Ugh! I urge all ABC daytime viewers to not watch The Chew or The Revolution or Couric - make them flounder in the ratings and show ABC our strength. We should be tired of some executive telling us want we should be viewing. ABC – an acronym for About to Burn and Crash. I don’t believe the network understands that the loyal soap viewers it attracted with “love in the afternoon” will never watch the new shows. I work each day and tape the soap to watch in the evening. I won’t be wasting my time to record Couric or any reality show about food and weight loss. Sorry ABC, execs, you have killed your network. I have already stopped watching the local news on the ABC affiliate in Philadelphia and will never return. Once the soaps are gone, I am turning to CBS for such fare. I urge all viewers to abandon ABC in daytime and prime time to show your support. Strength in numbers – we have until September 2012 to express our views.

It really is simple folks. If we all love Soaps and GH as much as we say we do, and are absolutely devastated by the prospect of losing, then the power lies witin us. Turn on your TVs. Drive those ratings up. Help GH post a number that the execs simply cannot ignore. The ratings are what they listen to most. If GH was consistantly draw a 3.0+ going into September, there's no way it is pulled. If you're not willing to turn on your TVs to save it, what's the point of complaining about it's exit.

jmoney - we have no power at all in this process. ABC has already made its mind up. The grave has been dug. It is just a matter of finally pulling the plug and hoping that the show will die with dignity in tact.

Hi JAQ,

It's good to be back. I took a little bit of a break from the site, I needed it, but when it comes down to it, there isn't a better place on the net for Soap news and dirt, so given yesterday's developments, I had to stop by.

The bottom line is: GH is not cancelled. Hasn't happened yet, that's a fact. Does the future look bright? I guess it's a matter of perspective. But I'm a glass half full kind of guy.

Since they have not taken the show off the airways, that means WE can show them how much it means to us by tuning in.

I mean, I'm reading comment after comment of people who are sad its leaving, but hate the show in its current form so much that they don't watch it regularly. Doesn't make much sense to me.

If GH drew a 3.0+ consistantly going into September 2012, there's no way they pull it. But if it continually draws a sub 2.0 rating, then we'd have a little bit of a different situuation on our hands. Pass the word. Make a difference, that is if you (general you, not aimed at anyone specific) are one of the people who would hate to GH off the air.

Sure, we can complain on the internet, until we are all blue in the face. But our remotes give us power, and we need to use them to show the ABC execs how much the soaps mean to us in a positive way. All ABC Soaps. Show them the Soaps can still pull in a number! Beer

JMoney....I can definately see taking a break from this site. If the writers who get this information weren't so good & accurate, I would leave. We have a "psycho' among us here on this site!! A true one!!! Crazy

GH ratings are not good. OLTL is better. However, I am hoping with the outcry from cancelling the other 2 soaps, that abc doesn't want to act to hasty???
Katie Couric has nothing to do with GH. If not her, it would have been someone else. Why don't people see that??
We have a long time to go before they pull the plug. We have 2 new shows airing that will FLOP in daytime in September!! Big smile

Nice chatting with you....see you on the next forum as I am so done reading about Katie Couric!!!

The only thing ABC will get if they keep this up is Failure in the afternoon.
