Michelle Stafford and Christian LeBlanc Spill Emmy Secrets!

Neither Michelle Stafford nor Christian LeBlanc (Phyllis Newman and Michael Baldwin respectively on The Young and the Restless) is any stranger to the Daytime Emmys. They have been nominated multiple times, with Stafford boasting both a Supporting and Lead Actress win and LeBlanc winning Lead Actor three times. Now, these powerhouse actors (nominated again this year) share their Emmy secrets and strategies with GoldDerby. Stafford says selecting an episode submission with a story arc and an emotional undercurrent is key to winning. LeBlanc says he picks his Emmy submission reel with the advice of costars like Stafford.

This is definately a fluff piece but one thing about these two actors, they never phone in a scene. Yesterday when Phyllis was on the stand, there were about one million emotions on her face. She was looking out on all those people that were being hurt by what she was doing and you could see the guilt on her face. Another actress might have just gone in and been the bitch and asserted her claim to the baby. While her words were doing that, her face and actions were saying much more. And Michael yesterday as well, really gets into being a lawyer and playing those beats. His role was minimal and another actor would not have bothered to shade the scenes with acting techniques. Yet here he is even caring about some throw away scenes that weren't even about him. I wish everyone on soaps were as contentious about their craft as either of these two actors. Even if the material isn't there, they are. Best actors? you bet! Best material last year, not so much. But we give best writing (the material) to the writers. The actors play what they have to play. If they play it well, why don't they deserve attention for it?

LeBlanc is a good actor, but he should be on recurring. He's the definition of a supporting player---he's just trotted out for lawyer scenes with Victor or whenever someone's in trouble with the law.

If Michelle Stafford wins that Emmy on Sunday, I will require a barf bucket!! This woman just SCREAMS "self-entitled and arrogant." And I will never forgive her 100% for spitting in Victoria Rowell's face or threatning Michael Fairman because he DARED say anything disparaging against Scientology. She's great actress who I have always enjoyed as Phyllis, but I am honestly tired of seeing her name end up on the nomination list year in and year out, even when there are far more deserving ladies on the show (Stacy Haiduk, Eileen Davidson, Melody Thomas Scott.....). Hell, I'd even rather have seen TRACEY BREGMAN get the Lead Actress nod over Stafford. Again, I enjoy her onscreen, but something about her seriously turns me off!!!!

I am a big Christian LeBlanc fan, but he didn't deserve a nomination. He had practically NO storyline last year, and NO I don't count rubbing Lauren's shoulders as a storyline. I know he's a sweetheart who is incredibly charming, but I always thought it SHOULD require more than that to receive Emmy consideration. Like, you know........a FRONTBURNER storyline? Especially in the Lead Acting category. Maybe the rules have changed????

AB, I am really sorry, but those three listed in parnthesis don't even belong in the same category as Michelle Stafford.

Ummm....all those three actresses are MILES beyond Michelle Stafford. She is a great actress, but she doesn't play anything more than herself. Phyllis has become one-dimensional and I think her character is beyond repair. Write her off, MAB...

Akbad--

I was waiting for you to jump into the conversation SOMEWHERE. I agree. Stacy Haiduk, Tracey Bregman, Eileen Davidson and Melody Thomas Scott are ALL fabulous actresses who constantly get overlooked when it comes time for Emmy love to be passed around. I guess not bringing muffins to work has its disadvantages...........

And I agree with you too, akbad, Phyllis stopped being TRULY interesting about five or so years ago!!! The writers seem to not really know what to do with her, other than having her jump from Jack back to Nick, and now they are trying to "take her back to her roots," but Phyllis was NEVER this annoying or difficult to empathize with, even in the 90s when she spent most of her time walking around that cramped apartment talking to herself.

Alston---

HAHAHAHAHA u keep referring to that cramped apartment Danny shoved Big Red into back in the day and I'm in stitches! You know Danny Romalotti's rock star ass had more dough, but he had his babymomma in HUD housing. SMDH...

Anyway, I just am not feeling the MS or CJB love. Let Eric Braeden, Melody Thomas Scott, Michael Muhney, Jess Walton (I know, she doesn't want another Emmy, but she dominates when Jill is on!), and others receive at least a nod for their work. This pity High School drama has gone on behind the scenes of Y&R long enough and it needs to cease and desist.

Alistair--I agree! Michael Baldwin is a minimal player and needs more to do. See my "Akbad saves Y&R" forum for my ideas for Michael...

Michelle Stafford is the most entertaining actress on the show except for Tricia Cast and Jess Walton (when they give her something fun to do, as they have been recently). So while she had no story last year and many other actresses deserve a nod more than her, I don't agree when people say she should be written out. Maybe given a break and not on 3-4 times a week for a while, sure.

@ Bishbay how do you figure that Michelle Stafford is anymore entertaining than Melody Thomas Scott, Eileen Davidson, Jeanne Cooper, or even Elisabeth Hendrickson? They act circles around a tired actress who has overstayed her welcome in an effortless role! I'd rather see Nikki drunk off her ass or Ashley behind bars than Phyllis trying to raise her grandbaby. They use SyPhyllis whenever they need conflict other than Victor and it's old. Find another female antgonist than Big Red because Michelle Stafford is a menace backstage. We all know she keeps up hell with her beliefs and pandering to certain co-stars while shuning others.

Bishbay ... Michelle Stafford is the most entertaining actress on the show except for Tricia Cast and Jess Walton?!?!?! You must truly be her most loyal or most well paid fan.

To repeat myself ... Michelle Stafford is an incredibly overrated, past her due date has been Y&R staff member. Her current demented Lucy Ricardo act (she has actually always been doing Lucy Ricardo), her incessant double or triple line readings and those looks coming out of her shiny L Ron Hubbard possessed Dianetic crazed eyes are getting more intolerable by the episode. I have a feeling that the actors portraying the characters getting to disown her on screen are doing so with great personal relish.

If she wins this Emmy on Sunday night I don't think I'll be all that pleased.

I still say that the woman gave an incredible performance yesterday. I always take what I hear with a grain of salt especially when someone has an agenda. So I am not completely convinced about everything that has been said about this woman. All I know is what I see on screen and what I saw her do on the witness stand was act her ass off. Which I also see whenever she is on stage. One demensional? please. She plays five demensions of every scene she does. If you would like to see an example of 1-d acting look no further than the table next to her at the trial. AH only has about two facial expressions and all of them are inappropriate. She has more hairdoo's than tones of voice and since she only has bed head and updoo, that is pretty bad.

marknsprmo ... you must be wearing your rose coloured glasses.

(I also don't remember Phyllis being on the stand; I could have missed that scene though. If not then you must have been praising Ms Zima above.)

This whole custody battle (even with the major problems as to how Lucy came to nearly be an Abbott) really bothers me a lot. Phyllis is a complete selfish self centred bitch who will stop at nothing and walk over anyone to get her evil deeds done. Daisy is a psychotic criminal who basically lied on the stand. Victoria is a mentally unbalanced woman who really actually does treat Billy like a door mat. Which of those three makes for good mothering material?

The Judge made an awfully fast decision based on what she heard on the stand without conducting any research into the whole situation. Had Lauren been allowed into the courtroom I'm sure things would have been different. I don't know why Rafe could not have included her in testimony especially since Michael should have been helping all concerned to get this change of custody stopped. It certainly has to be obvious that Lauren's testimony could have quite easily turned the tide.

Anyway ... I doubt this whole thing is over just quite yet and at this point could go in any number of directions.

LOL GOD no I was not praising Daisy! No no no no no no. Phyllis was indeed on the stand and did this amazingly complex thing where she kept saying the party line, but her voice faultered and her face was full of guilt as she looked out on the people in the court and the pain they were going through that she was causing. I don't think Phyllis is enjoying this even one little bit. I think she is doing this for the best motives. Misguided though they are. I think any court in the country would be a fool to award custody to parents who bought a child on the black market. Their adoption was in absolutely no way a legal adoption. Even if the woman who is the parent is facing severe non issue related crimes. I doubt the scene would have played much different is Lauren had been aloud to enter the court room. The courts really do look down on buying people. Americans even had a war all about that topic. It was called the Civil War.

marknsprmo ...
I hardly think that the American Civil War can be in any way equated with the black market baby adoption business, especially in this context.

I really must have been out of the room during that scene because I'd certainly remember how cringe worthy that would have been for me. I can't disagree with you that Michelle Stafford is a good actress but to my mind it's all now on an increasingly shrinking loop. And come on ... you really think Phyllis is doing this for the good of all mankind? If she were then maybe she should have used a gentler approach. Her attitude and method in this whole thing is quite apparent. There IS something wrong there. Phyllis herself, Lauren and many others have been tortured by Daisy and most of her relatives for years now. Why would she want that possible devil spawn in close proximity to her and her family? That is why in this bizarre Y&R universe I would not be too incredibly shocked to have Phyllis turn out to still be Sheila. (I am being facetious of course, I hope.)

I still think Lauren would have made a difference. Also the court (albeit Y&R) did grant the adoption so I think Daisy could quite easily change her mind in that direction should/when she becomes disillusioned with Phyllis. In the end though, I guess Daniel will probably end up with Lucy in some way or another; just as long as Phyllis is not forgiven.

With the "news" that Mr. Miller is not leaving it will be interesting to see how all of this plays out.
