Y&R's Maria Arena Bell on Melody Thomas Scott: "Don't Be Worried, She Will Be Back"

Fresh off the heels of her Daytime Emmy win for Oustanding Writing for a Drama Series, The Young and the Restless head writer/showrunner Maria Arena Bell assured yours truly that leading lady Melody Thomas Scott will be back onscreen. According to Bell:

Melody is a phenomenal actress. Nikki is one of the great core characters of The Young and the Restless, so of course we'll see her again. She’s in a story line right now, we actually have her leaving town for rehab. She'll be back and we love Mel. She’s one of the hearts and souls of The Young and The Restless. So, don’t be worried, she will be back.

Kiss of death. I feel like MTS will have to put on sackcloth and annoint her forehead with ashes before MAB sends her a contract let alone starts writing for her again.

Jillian, sorry you were robbed by that EW writer, Lynette Rice. How very unethical of her. It's your scoop, and a good one, too. I'm so glad MTS will be returning. I can't wait for your take on the Emmys as you were there in person, but watching it on TV was horrible.

I wouldn't trust MAB with my last penny! That should tell you how far I could throw her, which isn't far at all.

They barely have her on because she's about the highest paid actor on the show. She refuses to take a paycut, which even Eric Braeden has, so they use her less. She's not being completely cut like some of the GH older female cast has been (never mind not taking a paycut, Brian Frons thinking no one (meaning him) wants to see older vets.

Let's hope MTS and Sony can make a deal. I do think MTS is trying to play hardball, but I think she forgets what happened with Jess Walton and Eric Braeden a few years ago. Congrats on the win, Maria!

The issue isn't MAB...I believe the issue is Sony!

I am sure MAB got the question several times and MTS was sitting with the cast of Y&R at the Emmy's.

I am interested to see what MTS said to the press about the whole issue. She needs to be back on our screen soon! It's crazy to send her to rehab for all this time. Get her back!

Whoever or whatever the issue is, I hope it's resolved. Melody has been with the show for 32 years, and that should mean something. Y&R is guilty of so many EGREGIOUSLY stupid casting decisions, such as rehiring that POINTLESS actor, Daniel Goddard, bringing on all these randomly POINTLESS new characters, which is also a considerable waste of money and simply keeping too many actors on its payroll.

While they should NOT bankrupt themselves just to accommodate Melody, or any other actor, they need to get their priorities in check.

However, by the same token, Melody needs to realize that it's not 1985 and soaps don't have money to burn anymore. If she's not willing to meet Sony halfway in the salary department and take a paycut, then I feel that is being harsh and unreasonable, especially when actresses with the SAME amount of tenure in daytime such as Robin Strasser and Susan Lucci took WELL-DOCUMENTED hefty pay cuts.

If the issue comes down to money, I hope Melody will come to her senses. After all, I am sure she knows how limited the job opportunities are out there for actresses over 50. Just like I am sure that Sony/Maria Bell/CBS knows how valuable an asset Melody is to the show. It's a double-edged sword.

P.S--

I don't trust Maria Bell's ass either. And now that's she's won an Emmy (that she TOTALLY didn't deserve!), I expect her to become TEN times more arrogant, self-entitled and unwilling to admit the truth, not that such a feat is even POSSIBLE for her.

I'm sorry Melody shouldn't take a paycut. As I have said over and over again. You can't ask an actress/actor to take a paycut when you higher frick and frack from GH. Why should Melody take a paycut if Sony is being wasteful with the money and snatching and grabbing stars from other shows. Why waste this money on those stars. I don't watch Y&R for GH, ATWT, or AMC's has beens.

Smitty,

I understand where you're coming from, but EVERYONE in daytime has had to take pay cuts, so I don't see how Melody should be any different. If Susan Lucci, who is the most bankable and famous actress in daytime, is not immune to pay cuts, then nobody is. Even the high and mighty Eric Braeden took one, and I am sure they had to twist his arm ten ways til Sunday to get him to do that. All the other shows bring on actors from canceled shows as well.

But I agree that Maria needs to stop hiring all these new actors, whether they come from canceled shows or not. Y&R has too many characters as it is, and they don't utilize half of them properly, which amounts to a lot of wasted cash.

She is a SUPERB actress and a true daytime staple. She just isn't a team player. If Susan Lucci can take a paycut, so can MTS. I don't want her off Y&R, but I do understand the reasons behind not having on the air a lot of the time. She is just too expensive.

CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS CRAP? OF ALL THE POSSIBLE NOMINATIONS THAT Y AND R COULD HAVE WON, THEY HAVE TO GIVE THEM OUTSTANDING WRITING. I CAN NOT BELIEVE THIS. THERE MUST HAVE BEEN A REAL BUNCH OF IDIOTS DOING THE VOTING OR COUNTING OF THE VOTES. JUST ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVEABLE!

Just cause someone else does it doesn't mean she has to as well. I could go round and round on why I disagree but the fact of the matter is having MTS offscreen does no good for the show, but let me point out one thing for those who seem to think she hasn't taken a paycut. Follow me now.

Since MTS is now on recurring there is no way she's making the same amount she made before. In effect she has taken a pay cut. When Sony cuts back your airtime significantly and you are being paid by episode now then her pay has been cut. If she makes $10K an episode but working at a severely reduced schedule then in affect she has taken a paycut. Without a contract she is guranteed no money. For example let's say her previous contract called for her to make $1 million a year. Well without the contract she is still getting the same per episode rate but with no contract to gurantee the amount of screen time. If MTS only does 80 shows a year then that means for the year she has only made $800,000. Which means she's took a paycut!

You all have to wake up and understand business. Also comparing a star of Y&R to a star of AMC, IMO, is apples to oranges. There are many different factors affecting Y&R and AMC. You can't compare the same two shows. Just like you can't compare Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy.

Might I add...like Jamey Giddens pointed out on that last podcast. MAB fought herself to not take a paycut so everyone in daytime isn't taking a paycut. An executive is too good for one but you expect all the stars to do it. That's BS....and for anyone to think MTS and EB hadn't taken any paycuts in the past are delusional. These paycuts didn't just start in daytime.

It's hard for me to say Melody Thomas Scott should take a paycut when this cast is CLUTTERED with useless pieces of junk who shouldn't be here (Hello, Tucker, Malcolm, Cane, Sophia, Heather, Adam, Phyllis, Genevieve, Lily, Sharon, Sam, etc.!!!). If Y&R were really in a pinch and had to purge much of its cast to stay afloat, then I think Melody should take a paycut. But if they are just going to use the money they take from her to pay for more no-talent hacks or washed up ABC/P&G leftovers, then no, that's unacceptable.

NO ONE in DAYTIME should be making $ 1,000,000 a year. SORRY. With the ratings where they are, DAYTIME NEEDS A SALARY CAP AT $500,000 A YEAR. And they should be paid PER WEEK, NOT PER EPISODE. Show up to tape 1 episode OR 4 episodes a week, WHATEVER STORYLINE DICTATES, BY THE WRITERS WRItING DECENT STORY...... AND be glad you're an EMPLOYED actor..... SO SICK OF THIS BS.

perhaps sallary should be according to ratings. Sort of like commission. Everyone gets base rate and commission for ratings points. 20 dollars says ratings would go up!

MTS to another soap? SON thinks so! https://twitter.com/#!/SoapOperaNetwrk

Why not send Nikki to a suave rehab clinic in LA? Doesn't B&B have any alcoholics she could befriend? A little R&R, a little change of scenery for Nikki could be a good thing.

There is so much "drama" wrapped around this story that I am not sure who or what to believe. I think Y&R does have too large of a cast and I could list actors and characters I think should go, but something is rubbing me the wrong way about MTS. I was fuming mad when DOOL cut Deidre, Drake, etc. a few years ago and I was equally pissed when GH started messing with the Q's. I love daytime and I love the veteran characters, like Nikki on Y&R.

I am hearing (and Lord knows there are a million rumors out there) that Susan Flannery is only doing one more year and that MTS might be tapped to go to B&B to help fill her void. Who knows.

Thank you AlistairCrane. That's my issue with all this. Sony keeps claiming that they can't pay MTS and then they continue to hire stars from other soaps and you know they are not coming in at newbie salaries. If they had trimmed their cast down and still couldn't up with the money, that's a different story. Why wouldn't you want to invest in someone that that the FANS are already invested in? Shouldn't they be taking care of their own first?

@Smitty: I'm going to be frankly honest here. MTS was never going to be an Oscar winning actress. Her acting record beside Y&R is as sparse as a an empty house. She is known for having 1 liner's where she said "He went that away!" prior to her soap career and some very small roles. Yet besides that she is become one of the most popular actors on Y&R and in daytime for that fact. But in today's world she should be happy to be working. She does not have many options and needs to come down off of whatever price tag she is thinking she is worth. We ain't in the heyday of soap anymore.

I live in the SF where overpaid union working bus drivers refuse to pay more into their retirement and expect the tax payers to continue subsidizing it. So the world has changed and people need to readjust to a new reality.

It is better to be happy to be working for any amount then to not have work at all. So there is no sympathy when over 12 million Americans are out of work.

So if they were saying they would only give her 300k a year it's better than what 12 million are not getting. We don't have time for Diva's or Divo's.

@wjhboy73: Great minds think alike. I have always said that there should be a salary cap. 500k would be perfect. That is one way to cut down cost. With soaps on a rope we won't have time for any actor actress to have outrageous demands.

So what you may have taken several pay-cuts in the past. As long as I have a job and can pay the basic not the excesses we can continue to cut that salary down if need be as long as we are employed. People need to realize what the state of the economy is and get real. The days of excesses are over!

A salary cap...y'all have truly lost it! If you all had your way these soap stars would make pennies.

No one in any industry is just gonna work for anything. That's why we have to have unions. These big companies..i.e. Sony think they can pay these CEOs all kinds of money but slash the little people's salaries. Why should a CEO make millions why they are slashing everyone else's salaries. That's ridiculous and if you think it's fair then I say you go work in the low paying jobs. Since you seem to like making pennies.

I think it's rediculous to ask the stars to take pay cuts when the person who is running this trainwreck refuses to do the same. MAB has a team of writers that do the majority of the work but it's the stars that have to sell it.

MAB could start off by trimming down the cast. I am sure Eden Riegal is a nice person but as Heather she sucks. How long will it take for MAB to realize that her stunt casting failed again? And bringing back all of Cane's family from Down Under? I know I don't care. Same with Malcolm and Sofia.
