Shemar Moore: "The Young and the Restless and Bill Bell Literally Changed My Life"

While the role of Malcolm Winters is currently occupied on The Young and the Restless, it's no secret some fans (including this one) will never stop clamoring for Shemar Moore  to return to the sudser. Even though Moore has moved on to primetime (Criminal Minds) and film (Diary of a Mad Black Woman) success, would he ever consider gracing us with that sexy smile again in Genoa City?

"Well I can't now, Darius McCrary is playing Malcolm Winters," Moore said when I posed the question to him backstage at the Daytime Emmys in Las Vegas.

According to Moore, while he will always have fond memories of the role that made him a household name, he's moved on and won't diss McCrary's take on the role.

"Nah, nah. You're not going to get me hating on my boy!" he said laughing, when I suggested McCrary could um, take a sabbatical. "I did my time, I did 8 years on The Young and the Restless, then I left and came back briefly. I did all that. I miss The Young and the Restless, and I will always cherish my time there."

Turning serious, Moore revealed he credits Y&R for teaching him how to be the actor he is today.

"I didn't know a whole lot when I started the show. I was hungry, I was fascinated by the world of acting and I loved the idea of playing pretend and allowing myself to kind of escape into a character. Since then I developed a craft and process. But, I couldn't have done that waiting tables. I got to train every day and got to take risks and fall on my face on The Young and the Restless."

Moore went on to credit the late Bill Bell for the career he's managed to cultivate.

"Bill Bell, who is no longer with us, took a chance on me, " said Moore. "My resume was none, and there were some people in there with some things [on their resumes]. He thought I was a handsome guy and that's the world of daytime. He liked that I was hungry, and he liked my instincts. He took a chance and he didn't have to. The Young and the Restless and Bill Bell literally changed my life. I wouldn't be doing Criminal Minds, Soul Train and The Brothers. I've been here for 17 years, the longest I've gone unemployed was 3 months and that's a blessing."

Okay, so he isn't trying to take back his gig from his boy McCrary, but what about a cameo?

"Bill Bell and The Young and the Restless gave me my break and so, if I could come back and do a cameo, in my heart I would love to go back to The Young and the Restless," Moore admitted. " In the business, the politics in the Hollywood game, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to go back to The Young and the Restless. I treat my career like school. The Young and the Restless was high school,  I graduated. Now I'm on Criminal Minds, college. Hopefully I move on to grad school, chasing Denzel, Jamie Foxx and so on and so forth."

I really miss Shemar on Daytime. Seeing him at the Emmys was a treat even though I did not care for the way he was used. It is so refreshing that he celebrates and appreciates his time on soaps. Many stars began on soaps but once they "make it", they conveniently forget how they got their start.

Moore was lucky to have Bill Bell to tutor him. Soaps have had a few really strong influences on the genre that were positive and Bell is high on that list for me. He is missed.

It was classy of Moore to not comment on how McCrary plays the role of Malcolm. It is plain, however, that many do not like or accept his interpretation or his "look" for Malcolm Winters. Where Drucilla and Malcolm evolved from somewhat ugly duckings to swans on Y&R, McCrary's Malcolm has taken the role in the reverse.

I will admit Shemar Moore is a hard act to follow. Thank goodness for "Criminal Minds".

When you "poised" the question, or when you "posed" the question?

Classy guy!

Malcolm Winters is not a role that really calls for award-winning acting, but its portrayer should at least be a fine-looking male. There are some people who may find Darius attractive, but the man is no Shemar Moore.

Moore is a good actor. I'm glad that he's found success in primetime. Hopefully, he'll be able to make the jump to film. It's hard to do so for most TV actors.

Given the state of daytime, it makes no sense for Moore to leave his current gig on a successful TV that pays him more than he'd make on Y&R.

There will only ever be one MALCOM and that is Shemar. Never miss watching him on Criminal Minds and wish him the best of luck in whatever he does.

It's nice to see Shemar be more humble about his beginnings on Y&R. Because IMO he has a bit of a "tude" about moving on from his "training ground" of daytime; especially back when he first left and briefly returned for the Lily paternity reveal. It's nice to see him admit that he was not hired for his skills as a thespian. He was totally a "body" back then, but he did take the time to learn how to act. I still don't think he's that great, but he has definitely come a long way. He sure is a charming muthafuckah, but I'm still not sold on him being in "college" when it comes to acting, nor have I ever been all that convinced he is the FOINEST of foine. But kadooz to him all the same for having a steady primetime gig.

I do think someone else could easily play Malcolm. I don't think for a second SM is the only Malcolm. Really, the role is not super demanding. But I do agree that Malcolm, even at his most "hood", still had more of a smooth player vibe than Darius McCrary has. DMc has managed to make Malcolm almost country or soulful, something Malcolm never was. I could easily see someone like Henry Simmons or Real Andrews in that role.

I wonder how he feels about his former character being played by someone, who is about as handsome as Flavor Flav? Tongue

I think soap fans, in particular, forget that these are acting "jobs." You know how you might look fondly on a past job but not want to go back. I think sometimes it is to the advantage for a star to go back and then sometimes may not be advantageous. It doesn't mean they are not glad they were on a certain soap or had a certain part at the time. I am just a realistic fan. I don't understand sometimes when fans just assume or think an actor wants to go back to a role. That is fantasy in a way. Even with the returns for amc/oltl, I rather see the current stars as opposed to a walkon. who cares?? I went thru this with atwts/gl and the only ones I enjoyed were the ones still in the daytime world. I still think that the shows should work with current characters. Sometimes I want to tell fans to get a grip.

I love Shemar

But I hate all this talk "Y&R was my training ground" "Y&R is like highschool, and primetime is like college"

LOL way to insult all the vet actors that have been doing soaps for over 20 years...

Still love him anyways. Criminal Minds is one of my favorite shows, and I hope he gets to where he wants to be with his career Smile

Damn! I just have to wonder how the hell Jillian kept from bursting into random giggle fits seeing all THAT up close and personal!!!! No WAY would I have been able to contain myself to even get out one word, let alone full sentences and questions!

And so classy he won’t say a word about Darius … good thing he has US to evaluate Falcolm for him! Wink

But so glad he credits daytime and Bill Bell. Love it when people who come from soaps happily acknowledge the time they spent on their shows, like him, Nathan Fillion, Josh Duhamel, SMG, Judith Light, etc … wow. Classy peeps!

Henry Simmons would be far more appropriate to play Malcolm Winters (looks and age-wise). When I saw this luscious-looking brotha on Another World back in the day, I realized Jesus made me gay and there was nothing I could do to fight it. Smile

It just occurred to me that since Sony is looking to snap up all the departing ABC-ers, we might just get Darnell Williams in the part. As much as I respect Darnell's talent, I wouldn't want to see him in a man-candy role.

But wouldn't it be a trip if they hired Debbi Morgan as Dru and Darnell as Malcolm?

I hope you saw Henry on NYPD Blue too cuz there wasn't much that wasn't shown of that hottie on that show.

Henry would be a great choice. Also Boris Kodjoe maybe for a new role. Another one I lust after...

Yes Alstonboy! I have the dvd just for that reason.
The movie's subject matter isn't pleasant but Boris more than makes up for it.

Ryan-Scott, I had no idea who Boris Kodjoe was or what he looked like until you were sweet enough to tip me off.

I'm tuning out of DC for the next hour or so. I need some "alone time." Smile

One thing that I've always loved about Shemar Moore is that he doesn't forget where he's come from. He just seems very appreciative of what he's been able to gain starting in Daytime, and that does seem to a rarity in the Entertainment Industry. So i'm glad he's still striving even higher to become a leading man.

As for the role of Malcolm, I grew to love the character during the 90s, but he clearly had his flaws...he had to mature. DM may not "Look" like Shemar(which is what I believe most viewers dislike), but he plays the pretty similar. SM's version of Malcolm always had his way with words, yet he was still loved. So its good that Shemar isn't coming down on Darius' portrayal, because I say he's only trying to make the role his own, but still keeping some of those Malcolm qualities present.

But one thing I definitely agree....he's definitely a hard act to follow. He'll always be a part of Y&R.

I LMAO at that podcast!

Jillian goes, “Hai, Shemarrrr….” LMAO, I love it! At least you got words out!!! I would've been standing in front of him like a fool, dazed and in Love and, been fired from DC for drooling in public!

Sigh ... I must live vicariously through you! Laughing out loud
