Daytime Confidential Top 20, July 2011

No. 20: Kim Zimmer, One Life to Live

After a two month absence from the Daytime Confidential Top 20, One Life to Live’s Kim Zimmer climbed back onto the countdown at No. 20.

No. 19: Deidre Hall, Days of Our Lives

Days of Our Lives’ Deidre Hall has been on a media blitz since Louise Sorel revealed, in June, that John (Drake Hogestyn) and Marlena were returning to Salem. The publicity helped Hall return to the Daytime Confidential Top 20 for the first time since November 2010.

The Daytime Confidential Top 20 is based on the clicks of Daytime Confidential readers as they use the website. It is tabulated at the end of each month and published during the following month.

Glad to see Melody getting the fan support that she deserves during this very trying time when Maria Bell THINKS she can replace this Y&R legend with Genie Francis. Maybe she will learn sooner rather than later that she can't.........

But can anyone explain to me why Natalia Livingston is in 2nd place????? Don't get that one.

Am with you Aboy and glad to see Nikki at #1, and the other YR alumni where they are. Since I do not watch any other soaps, I am unable to comment on them.

What I find interesting is that BH, KM and IR are the only 3 from General Hospital to make the top 20. BH dropped to #4 after being #1 for 2 months, and KM is in the 15th spot. Ingo I am pretty sure made the list at #8 this month, because of his leaving GH. He normally isn't on the list however. It seems SB's star is finally starting to dim, as he used to be a regular on the list...but the last few months he has been missing. The three main leads...MB, LW and TG never make this list...and some of the other actors that tend to get alot of air time like DZ, JMB, JJ & KS are absent also.

It would seem that BH and KM are the two actors most people are interested in...So why doesn't the show capitalize on this and really write for these two women? Give them strong front burner story lines, where they come across in a positive manner. KM's writing has improved with the new head writer...but BH is still getting crappy treatment.

No offense but do people really think because someone makes the DC top 20 they are leading men or ladies or the most popular? Maybe Y&R should write more for CK or Marcy. I don't see Laura Wright or Susan Lucci on here does that mean they aren't popular. IMO BH and KMo are ok but neither are lead actress material. I would never put them in the same league as Stafford or Sarah Brown or Ari Zucker or Melody Thomas Scott. I think they are supporting actresses and are getting screen time and story fitting their places on the show.

Jphelps--

Please don't even JOKE about Y&R writing more for Christel Khalil. The show is already bad enough as it is. LOL!! Having to see more of that whiny sap, Lily, would be too much for me to bear. And Abby is nothing but a self-entitled, annoying Paris Hilton reject. They can backburner her indefinitely as well..........

I get your point, but your comments about writing for Marcy and Christel literally gave me a funny feeling in the pit of my stomach, similar to nausea.

jphelps....What I said was that the actors I mentioned seem to be the ones most people are INTERESTED IN. This list is measured by hits for information on actors. I didn't say they were the BEST actors or the most POPULAR....just the ones apparently that people are the most interested in knowing about...

I don't know which soaps you are watching....but most shows I have watched over the years, do not have a lot of actors that are "Emmy Worthy." Soap actors for the most part, are average actors with good looks. The draw and attraction of soaps... is that they are on five days a week, and because of this..they become like an extension of your own family. You feel for them...you root for them...you cry for them...etc.

That doesn't mean that there isn't great actors working in daytime...because of course there are. As for your list of great actresses...a few of the ones you mentioned....leave me cold...Apples and oranges...to each their own.

My point is that if you are trying to market a product,(and a soap is a product to their network) you usually utilize and capitalize, on what people seem to like most about your product...whether or not either lady is your cup of tea...obviously they seem to be liked by many. I also feel both of these ladies are quite capable of carrying a lead story...So from my prospective and opinion...if I was in charge, I would be putting them more front and center on the show. People like them...use them.

You are entitled to feel and think what you want...but this is my own personal opinion, that I chose to explain to you.

Jphelps Kelly was brought on as a lead. In the last few years she hasnt gotten the material but I think she has been spot in her performance with the jason in peril story and she clearly hit it out of the park during the Kristina/Keifer story and the baby lila's death story. Im hoping this signals a turn around.

I do however agree with you that being in the top 20 doesnt mean much, nor does not being in the top 20 mean much. It just means that youve had press or you havent - at least most of the time. The attention could just as well be negative as it could be positive.

I think of Becky as a top tier support - more like a lulu and a maxie and less like say Diane. One of the reasons I didnt want to see her fired is because as much as I loathe the character, I do recognize her popularity and while I dont think being in the top 20 is indicative of much, I think its clear that few characters even remotely garner the attention or inspire the passion on the internet that sam/liz - kelly/becky have, not just of late, but for the better part of the last half decade.

OH I understand now but I don't think that showing up on one websites top 20, a website that pretty much has favored Steve Burton and his pairings over the years(no offense to DC) indicates popularity or the most popular. I do think both KeMo and BH are fan faves but certainly don't think they are more popular than Laura Wright or Kimberly McCullough or Kirsten Storms or Nancy Lee Grahn just that they are more searched on this site and both have active online fanbases. I have been to GH fan events such as SSW and have seen the reaction and response to actors who never appear on this list as being as equal or great than these ladies. And I do think they deserve fair writing but not more or less than any other supporting actress on GH. And I think the show is doing a better job of balancing the writing for everyone. Its not great but its getting there.

I agree and sort of not...yes, balance. I dont think they are MORE popular than kim or nancy, but I think there might be a case that they are more liked than laura and kirsten. People at GHFCW were throwing down over scrubs and over jason's two pairings, they werent throwing down over Carly with Sonny or carly with jax nor were they throwing down over maxie and matt vs. scrubs, and I say that as a huge fan of both LW and KS. I dont think that fans would accept anyone else in the roles of robin, liz or sam, and probably not alexis, but I think a large number of viewers would welcome either carly back in the role if laura left and they would accept the right actress as maxie.

Im not sure how you define lead - kelly was nominated as a lead just last year, shes paired with a lead, and as Michael Muhaney just put it if you are standing around being discussed you are a lead and if you are standing around discussing others you are supporting - clearly Sam has had her moments over the last few years where she was the focus (or at least I should say by GH standards, by any other soap the show only has ONE female lead and thats laura). Kelly was certainly brought on as a lead since she came from PC as a lead.

EET...Once again we find ourselves agreeing. Yes...KeMo was brought to the show as a lead...Yes she is paired with, nominated and considered to be a lead...but unfortunately she has not been written like a lead. She is written as supporting figure in Jason's life...Hopefully this will now be changing since Guza is gone...because the ONLY female that man wrote for was Carly. LW has been the only actress given meaty lead material...and finally after five years she finally got nominated for a Emmy.

I personally do not care for her...I know you like LW...but she is my least favorite Carly...I don't count the third one that was in the role for a few months either. I think she is very overrated...just my opinion.

I also agree with your assessment of the ladies popularity...yes NLG and KMc are very popular and well liked...and the other two ladies not as much. I happen to like all of the ladies myself, and hope that they are written better, and portrayed in a more positive manner.

I like LW from her days on Loving. I think she has talent but like you she is my least favorite of the three carlys. I think she does a good job playing a character on gh and portraying the emotions, but at the same time shes never REALLY been carly to me - maybe because of the lack of chem with mb or maybe because she doesnt have the same raw connection to her kids sjb and tb had, or maybe that they both had much more physical interpretations of carly than lw does, but for whatever reason, while she can move me to tears with her acting, she doesnt feel like carly.

As for popularity, I would say that this 2o list is a lousy gage, but when you factor internet with fan club response with mail count with fb comments with magazine polls you get an overall sense of things. When you add all those things together I dont see the same ardor with respect to kirsten and laura.

I always find these things interesting and wait for them on a monthly basis, but they really don't mean much. Has Natalia Livingston even been in an article over the last month? I mean, has she been in one? It doesn't make sense to me. Unless people are searching for her and reading old articles? Just seems very strange. I'm not critizing because I find this feature to be very entertaining, you can never really guess who will land where.

Having said that, I wish that the DC crew would rank their Top 20 actors based on performance/storyline/whatever they would want to consider. Or maybe scrap storyline and just do performance. Then compare everyone's and make a list. You know...ranked 20 would be worth 1 point, ranked 1 would be worth 20 points. Add up the points from everyone's list and there you have it. Of course it would be subjective, but still would be very fun to see and would seem to stay more current with storylines and what's really going on. I realize there's a lot on the DC crew's plates already, but still would be a good feature to have. I'm not sure if its been suggested before, but yeah. I'm not saying get rid of this column for the other. Maybe do both. I realize this one dates back years so I wouldn't want it to just be scrapped. Yep. Just my two cents.
