HomeTVABCBREAKING NEWS: Susan Lucci Nixes Prospect Park’s All My Children Offer! Jillian Bowe September 6, 2011 69 Comments Deadline is reporting Susan Lucci has turned down Prospect Park's offer to stay on with All My Children. According to the site, Prospect Park went to La Lucci with an offer to pay the same salary she makes at ABC. The soap diva reportedly rejected their offer after asking for more money, to work less hours and to get a guarantee for a primetime series. Deadline claims Prospect Park is going back to the drawing board and will focus on ratings darling One Life To Live and shelve AMC until it can regroup. 69 Responses Llanview76 September 6, 2011 Speaking of a different Erika, I’d kind of like to know if Erika Slezak is going to be with ONE LIFE TO LIVE when it goes to the net. Log in to Reply richalan67 September 6, 2011 I would not turn down a paycheck if I were SL. She is not that great of an actress. As for Erika from OLTL it was just reported that she has indeed signed on for the Prospect Park project. If she can do it so should SL. ES is a far better actress. Log in to Reply Smitty September 6, 2011 WOW!!!! Log in to Reply appleridge September 6, 2011 RUMOR Has It That The Claims That Susan Lucci Turned Down PP Did not Come From Her But From ABC Daytime Publicist, Jori Peterson. FISHY!!!! Log in to Reply GossipGirl September 6, 2011 She’s asking for way to much! She wants MORE money and LESS hours? So do I Susan, but it ain’t gonna happen! Why does she think that she could get more money when the show is trying to SAVE money and go online? And she wants a guarantee to be on a primetime program? No one can guarentee something like that. I think she’s being really selfish here and it sounds like her not signing is putting a hold on AMC, which puts other people out of work. Log in to Reply harlee490 September 6, 2011 Interesting, does that mean AMC might not debut in Jan. 2012? Will they need to push it back, that to me would be risky because no Erica could be cause of concern. I don’t understand SL, if she is playing hardball it might of back fired. Sad. Log in to Reply stefanstavros September 6, 2011 WOW is right! Without Erica or Angie, AMC doesn’t have much to stay afloat…I wonder if Prospect Park will simply abandon the AMC project and focus on OLTL…which this article insinuates… Log in to Reply Nathang1983 September 6, 2011 I think that’s what’s going to happen, Stefanstavros. I kind of figured something like this was going to happen. I feel that Prospect Park picked up both to appease the people who are AMC fans, but the writing is on the wall. I just don’t see a start-up like Prospect Park paying the “big stars” of both shows like Lucci and staying afloat for, say, ten years. If she doesn’t change her mind, who knows what’s going to happen. They may not even pick up AMC. You already have Jacob Young and Debbi Morgan not returning to their roles. It makes me wonder if others, such as Darnell Williams, will follow suit. Log in to Reply jphelps September 6, 2011 As far as I am concerned people Susan Lucci can do whatever she wants. Who is to blame that Lucci is the only face and the only one PP feels can make the show marketable. Is that somehow Luccis fault that in Brian Frons desire to turn AMC into Sex and the City that he gutted this show over the years to the point where the core familes, the martins, the courtlandts, the chandlers have been decimated to the point where the show cant go on withouth Erica Kane. This woman by the way who everyone is now judging has taken several paycuts while people like Bernard Burton, Geary, Budig mathison have all said no until recent times. I say if PP wants AMC to succeed and feel they need Lucci pay her. She is a one woman marketig machine and this show has gotten and gets tons of free marketing from her book signings and appearences she makes that they don’t pay one dime for. But heck continue on with the PP ploy to now get the soap fans on her back just like Sony has done with Braeden in the past making people think he was unreasonable or MTS In recent times. Go after Lucci versus putting the pressure on PP if you want AMC to go on insist they give her what she wants. Log in to Reply GHfan-4now September 6, 2011 Interesting… Log in to Reply lfad September 6, 2011 I don’t remember the last time when Deadline has been flatout wrong. There was always just too big of a window between the end of AMC on ABC and the projected start date of it online and too many actors had expressed skepticism. If AMC never sees the light of day again after that reported asinine 80s style soap cliffhanger, I hope some talented fanfiction writers out there come up with their own endings. ETA: I also wonder if Prospect Park is having second thoughts about AMC anyway. It’s easier to use Susan Lucci and say, “well, she turned down her offer, we have to delay the start of AMC” than coming out and saying we’re not that confident in AMC as a product. Log in to Reply alstonboy4315 September 6, 2011 Hmmmm……I am not sure if I buy this. Susan Lucci has taken NUMEROUS paycuts over the past few years in order to help save AMC, so it really makes no sense to me that she would play the diva card now and try to bleed everyone dry. Susan Lucci doesn’t even really NEED to work, so I don’t buy for one second that she’s playing hardball. “Deadline” is just looking for some press, and they are undoubtedly fudging the facts to achieve it. Log in to Reply The_Moustache September 6, 2011 I WAS THE FIRST ONE TO PREDICT THAT SHE WOULD’NT STAY! she’s way too famous and on fire right now! and she’s getting TONS of movie/tv offers. Log in to Reply Melvins mom September 6, 2011 Lucci is the face of AMC for many fans and for those that don’t watch the show (like me). If she’s not going to jump on board (seems a little ridiculous to demand a guarantee to be part of a primetime series), then I think PP is better off to focus on OLTL. At least PP knows they they have willing stars to come on board. AMC could be shelved and “retooled” with different legacy characters — as Jamey has suggested before — for later in the future so fans are not “disappointed” and ratings bleed away because viewers don’t see their current favorite stars or characters on the show. Log in to Reply cheesehead91182 September 6, 2011 Prospect Park is going back to the drawing board and will focus on ratings darling One Life To Live and shelve AMC until it can regroup. Was it really necissary to add that stupid line to this story? OLTL is not a ratings darling, its ratings are in the crapper just like everyother soap and if it was doing as well as you all pretend it is, it wouldn’t be getting cancled. But anyway about Susan Lucci, she has every right to ask for more money or a primetime garuntee. If I were in her shoes I’d do it and so would anyone else. Log in to Reply onnie September 6, 2011 the cast knows that this show is being written by hacks and they do not want to continue with the hacks LB and JHC in charge. PP seems more invested in oltl cause its the stronger show. AMC has been crap for years just let it die. Log in to Reply angrierblackerman September 6, 2011 I think she probably wants a Tony Geary style contract, so she can stay in New York mostly, and commute to L.A. for work. Plus, she took so many pay cuts already, the show needs to make it worth her while so she won’t get burned again. I support whatever decision she makes, and while I love her, I am still going to watch the new All My Children. I don’t care if it’s just Cara and Maya, I am watching it. Log in to Reply The_Moustache September 6, 2011 OLTL was and will always be superior to AMC in acting/storylines. i’m more of an amc fan than oltl, SORRY BUT IT’S THE TRUTH. Log in to Reply The_Moustache September 6, 2011 get Robin Strasser to take over her spot. not as Erica Kane, but they should create a story where Dorian Lord quits being a senator and moves to Pine Valley and gets involved in a sorts of shennanigans. Log in to Reply Dew Chanin September 6, 2011 The economy is in the tank, the business is changing, dearie, shows are being canceled left and right and Ms Lucci wants more money. She throws a fit when she doesn’t get it, thereby putting about 50 people out of work. What a sweetheart. Here’s the thing with soap opera actors. The writers write to their talents and personalities. The longer an actor is on a show, the more the character resembles the actor and vice versa. Log in to Reply coolshoes September 6, 2011 Something about this story just doesn’t ring true. It was surprising when the news first leaked that PP matched Susan’s salary at ABC, especially since they’re entering untested waters. I’m sure Susan is negotiating for her ideal scenario (and she damn well should!), but I have a feeling there are either missing or misstated parts to the story. I’d love to hear her side. While it’s tough to imagine AMC without Erica, I’d still watch as long as a fair number of vets and fan favorites sign on. Log in to Reply josser September 6, 2011 Susan Lucci hasn’t made an official statement. This is rumor until either Lucci or Prospect Park makes a statement. That said, Lucci has been working on AMC for 40+ years. She’s 64 and hot. If an 80+ Betty White can get her own series and is still relevant, why can’t Lucci? As for needing a pay check, Lucci is one of the few soap stars who made millions when the cash was flowing. But, she may want to make more than a $1 mil a year. Primetime actors on successful shows make several million a year. Ashton Kutcher will make $750K per episode. Cast members on cable’s White Collar make $150/episode. Lucci wants her cut of the pie. Frankly, PP, as an Internet start up, should have offered Lucci a heap of stock options if not a share of the company. Start ups tech companies give shares to engineers and secretaries, why not to an actress like Lucci. That said, if Lucci doesn’t go to AMC online, wouldn’t that leave more money to spend on other actors? Why not lure David Canary out of retirement or strike a deal with other AMC stars? Log in to Reply SoapArmageddon September 6, 2011 Why exactly should it be a burden on Susan Lucci’s conscience that her castmates will be out of work if she doesn’t take the deal? She wasn’t the one that cancelled the show to begin with. And if PP decides to go ahead without her, then no harm no foul. Why are we always so quick to assign blame to people without even knowing the full story? Log in to Reply appleridge September 6, 2011 PP is not an internet startup Its a production company that is starting ainternet TV station Venture and thats what the Govt money is for, The Building of that site. Im going to agree that these are rumors until confirmed by PP and Lucci Log in to Reply Llanview76 September 6, 2011 You know…years ago in the early 80′s when Susan Lucci went on maternity leave All My Children did just fine. Granted you had characters like Cliff and Nina, Palmer and Daisy, Joe and Ruth Martin, Phoebe Tyler Wallingford to keep it interesting in Erica’s abscence. I honestly believe with Agnes Nixon and Lorraine Broderick at the helm they could still write an interesting program. All My Chidlren isn’t all about Erica…like Guiding Light was all about Reva. It really is an ensemble. Erik Log in to Reply seanny September 6, 2011 This article reeks of bs. Anybody whose ever met Susan knows that the only diva in her life is Erica Kane. As some here pointed out already, Susan doesn’t need to work for a living. Her children are grown and she and her husband’s properties are fully owned. How can PP a start-up internet-based entertainment company guarantee her a primetime deal on network television? Susan has always demonstrated that primetime success was never anything that she’s longed for. She’s been there and done that. She needs no guarantees. Log in to Reply Soap_Stud September 6, 2011 There are plenty of other Pine Valley residents that I would stil tune into and watch. Log in to Reply Ryan-Scott September 6, 2011 DAMN! I was really hoping… Log in to Reply Llanview76 September 6, 2011 Soap_Stud…you’re totally right and there are legacy characters they can bring back or keep around like Adam Chandler, Brooke English, Greg Nelson, Nina Cortlandt, etc. Again, All My Children has always been an ensemble. I would love to see them to continue using the show’s history and merge it with the present. Log in to Reply ktuc September 7, 2011 While I will agree that Susan Lucci is the face of AMC, I for one, will be more than willing to tune into AMC if she isn’t there! Sorry! I’ve always thought that she was overrated, now if we can just get Cameron Mathison and Rebecca Budig to ride off into the sunset permanently, I’d be a happy camper. I do agree that AMC will have a harder time making it should the fan favorites not follow; and yes, I realize that SL is one of the favs! While Susan Lucci is not my favorite soap star, everyone knows and associates her with AMC whether or not they watch the show. That being said, she should have her cake and eat it too should she decide to stay; I don’t blame her one bit for this, if true. Log in to Reply keanna September 7, 2011 I don’t believe this for one second. With all her business ventures, and I can’t imagine Susan, asking for more money. Until I hear it from PP and Susan herself, I think this is bs. Plus there alot of other legacy characters and actors BESIDES Susan, and I would watch without her!! Log in to Reply gdwitch September 7, 2011 If this news is indeed true, isn’t this a bit hypercritical? She complains Frons is all about the almighty dollar and putting people out of work–isn’t she doing the same thing? In her own words, “An iconic show was losing out to greed.” I also would be just fine watching the show without her, and don’t see why it can’t continue. She is not the be all and end all. Log in to Reply DaytimeFan0001 September 7, 2011 Good move. AMC is too much of a mess. Cut AMC down to a half hour serial and focus on OLTL Log in to Reply DaytimeFan0001 September 7, 2011 personally, i think they should both be a half hour. If they are trying to evolve these shows for the web, I’m all for a cut in running time, and they can follow B&B’s model. If these shows happen to be picked up by a cabler, than they can be sold as an hour package. Log in to Reply marknsprmo September 7, 2011 Susan Lucci is not a person but a company. She has people to pay. She has product to move. If she can do better, she will, if not, she will get what she can. I am sure they will figure something out but I have a thought. Tara Martin as played by Nancy Frangione could totally come in and take over. Nancy is a hell of an actress and though she hasn’t been on tv in a while, is still very fondly remembered as Cecille on Another World. Bitch the role of Tara up a little, and I think you would have the perfect replacement for La Lucci. Log in to Reply jphelps September 7, 2011 Susan Lucci is a pop icon. Erica Kane is not replacable period. It doesn’t mean AMC can’t survive but they don’t even have any vets aside from Susan left as anchors for the show. Adam gone, Angie gone, Ruth/Joe gone. Zendull and Rylee are part of what killed AMC they can’t anchor anything. Log in to Reply stefanstavros September 7, 2011 I agree 100% with jphelps….Without Erica and Angie that would only leave Jesse and Tad as legacy characters. And Jesse without Angie is a no-go. Unless they would bring back other legacies, this show would not even make sense keeping the name All My Children. The “brand” wouldn’t hold any value. Log in to Reply Katiebug9624 September 7, 2011 They could always bring in some different Martins, recast Jamie, maybe they could get Tad. Bring in some Chandlers like Colby or even some of the Santos and Santos/Grey families we don’t have to have Erica Kane I love her but she isn’t why I tune in anymore. I actually love Kendall and Zach but more than likely he won’t continue with the show so maybe they should set up a possible Kendall/Griffin reconciliation at the end of it all. Now Greenlee/Ryan can just go…I don’t care how just get off my screen. Log in to Reply Llanview76 September 7, 2011 Daytimefan0001, I am in agreement with you. I have always felt 30 minute serials would be cheaper…easier to write for. Within thirty minutes you don’t have to burn through too much story. You can even focus a little more on character development. Your cast can be paired down where with a large cast a character that had little to do on the backburner now has a little extra, bringing them to the forefront. I also believe this will allow the shows to do their own individual thing and not repeat plot devices as soaps do several times amongst each other each year. I also believe that one hour is all I have to devote to a show. An hour of two distinct Nixon shows would be great. I took a lot of pride watching All My Children at one time and it was not because of Susan Lucci’s celebrity, which I will never deny, but there are characters that made that show just as legendary if not infamous. Erik Log in to Reply Y2Jin99 September 7, 2011 Good riddance if this stays true. I won’t miss her for a second. I hate every scene she is in. She is not a good actress at all and should not so famous just cuz she acted terrible for over 40 years. Good luck Lucci when you can only do infomercials. Who cares if Marc Cherry or whatever his name is gives you a few episodes of DH. Its the last season of that. She should have never won an Emmy. Was a pity Emmy. Log in to Reply jphelps September 7, 2011 Good heavens since when has being a great actor or actress meant popularity. People seem to mistake this all the time. Most popular entertainers are not that great but have something that makes them stand out. Tell me what special acting talent Sandra Bullock or George Clooney or Brad Pitt have or even Angelina Jolie or Tom Cruise. None. But hey all have that something special, charisma on screen. Frank Sinatra was magnificent and had fabulous presence, an amazing musical ear, great phrasing but he wasn’t a great actor or great singer but he oozed charisma and personality. Thats exactly what Susan Lucci has charisma. And people love and watch her she has thousands of fans just like those above do. THere are very few Streeps and DeNiros out there who rise to the heights of popularity. Its why I tend to chuckle when some talk about all the great acting talent on soaps. The most popular divas, Diedre Hall, Susan Lucci have never been mega talented nor have people like Vanessa Marcil or Genie Francis but they have/had IT. I will always be a Lucci fan because SHE LOVES THE GENRE and has been loyal to this show or fans for years. SHe never left the show like say Diedre Hall left Days did she. If you want to paint Ms. Lucci as a diva of Erica proportions so that simple minded readers will believe it, then I think this article succeeded. Although the heavy slant of the Deadline article makes me believe there is at least another side to this story AND likely that multiple facts are incorrect. I don’t think AMC ever goes back into production without Lucci. It’s in PP best interest to work out some sort of deal. Who knows, but if PP does not go with AMC and now this rewrite of the ending being left hanging and they was thinking to do a 2 hour originally for the finale, the fans get screwed again by this mess transpiring about the launch. Log in to Reply Melvins mom September 7, 2011 I can completely see why an icon of this show/genre and someone who wants to pursue other ventures might choose to turn the offer down, or even ask for more money or the same money for fewer episodes. I just don’t get the demand for a primetime guarantee. That being said, unless this is confirmed, no one really knows anything and if SL does indeed decide to pass on the deal, perhaps she’ll explain why, though she’s certainly not required to. Like it or not though, I think the fact that perhaps she and other “anchors” of this show are not signing on does have implications for the future of the show online. As a Y&R viewer, I would not tune back in without at least some of my veteran faves or characters on the screen. At least not right away. It would be like having to invest in a completely new show when I still want the old one back. That option just doesn’t make a swift launch online seem financially smart, especially so soon after the current version of AMC goes off the air later this month. So I could totally understand why she would totally want to cut back her committment to the show wheile filming in LA. I bet if Frons didnt uproot the entire show across country for 1 year– and kept AMC in the NY area– this would be a non-issue. I bet Susan would happily continue with the show. But now with it moving to the web – which may flop- they need to make it worth her while– since she has become the named actress of that show! And since its a big risk moving these shows to the web– I could see why her people want PP to give her roles on their other shows in case the soaps flop on the web- she will have soething else lined up. As I would think she would have to decline other network projects to stay with AMC Log in to Reply Katiebug9624 September 7, 2011 Here’s the thing I like Susan Lucci but she doesn’t make AMC for me…she hasn’t in a long time. I can watch the show without her much like I watch GH without Luke. So when it comes down to it this isn’t going to keep me from watching AMC when it goes online now this does mean PP needs to get busy on signing some of the other stars. The other thing she may, indirectly, affecting thefuure of some of the actors o AMC,…were, that i she acts out,….the other actors may NOT work either? LLucci, you kno ery well, in this field, YOU can be replaced, wih a younger and more talented actress,….is this what you want? I started ti dislike ou wen you pant that see about bein coed for Wisteria Lane/ Desperate Housewives. Unless Mark Cherry is self medicating, I don’t see bringing in a new hyper female character; it’s especially hard to digest since the female talent Wisteria Lane is first rate and award winning,…..your not of that caliber LaLucci. Take the offer, you’re being offered a job that other actors would stomp over you, to get to it. Log in to Reply Renegade_Killerbee September 11, 2011 I don’t love Susan. But I have this terrible feeling in my gut that she is doing the right thing. Log in to Reply BornSoapStar September 11, 2011 Jori Peterson is an *sshole and I wouldn’t believe a word that comes out his mouth. Sounds like ABC retaliating for the Brian Frons bashing epilogue La Lucci put in the paperback version of her memoir that just came out. Regardless, she is not obligated to stay with the show. She has taken cuts before, but not everyone’s favorites is going to make the leap with PP- in fact, I have a feeling there will be more that don’t than do. Log in to Reply Diamond Lil September 12, 2011 Well said Dew,…..all of those people ‘may’ be out of work because LaLucci thinks she’s all that,….in the entertainment field,….a realiastic actor ALWAYS knows in the back of their minds,….there is always someone younger, prettier, and more talented. Competition in the TV and Film industy is so very fierce. Be careful LaLucci, you may be shooting yourself i the foot,…and unfortunately putting a lot of people out of work.
