HomeTVCBSYoung and Restless Employs End-of-Summer Casting Bloodbath! Jillian Bowe September 13, 2011 CBS, Comings & Goings, News, Soap Opera, The Young and The Restless 59 Comments It looks as though Tristan Rogers (Colin) may not be the only one leaving The Young and the Restless. According to sources, Genie Francis (Genevieve) could be on her way out as well. Meanwhile, according to CBS Soaps In Depth, Sean Patrick Flannery (Sam), Eden Riegel (Heather) and Darius McCrary (Malcolm) are also being let go. Last night, Rogers announced on Twitter his character was departing Genoa City. 59 Responses SoapArmageddon September 13, 2011 These are steps in the right direction. All are good moves. Hopefully he works his way into stories with Sharon from time to time. But keep on cutting the fat Y&R. Log in to Reply kerfuffles September 14, 2011 I gotta say, I’m happy to see SPF, ER and DM gone. They were not a writing problem but rather an instance of actors just not clicking with the roles. I’ve disliked the recasts of Malcolm and Heather more than any other I can imagine, save maybe that awful recast Marty on OLTL from a few years ago. I think ER is talented but this role was doing her no favors. She went from being a soap star to being called the worst recast of the year. She just didn’t fit the role and can do better somewhere else (though I also agree the writing for Heather didn’t do the character/actress any favors either). Log in to Reply Carol2 September 14, 2011 What a waste of Tristan Rogers. He was good with Jess Walton, and was a nice change from the mumbling thug known as Victor, or comatose Tucker. He is paying the price for the belly flop of the Canestipation return/Genie Gone Wild. There are so many actors whose characters have been ruined by the writing – even people who have been on the show for decades. It’s harder to know who to keep than who to fire. I will say that I really would like to say goodbye to Jeff Branson, Liz Hendrickson, and Greg Rikkart. Log in to Reply soapjunkie88 September 14, 2011 I welcome the decisions … but the way Eden Riegel, according to her twitter, must have found out that she’s out of a job is horrible!!! Y&R is an awful excuse for a Daytime Serial these days. And guess while this is all happening MAB is already drinking cocktails laughing with her friends that she’s getting money for doing nothing. -.- Log in to Reply Karolynne September 14, 2011 So we lose Tristen for Zima? Bad choice… Log in to Reply JLyn23 September 14, 2011 All these firings and yet Cane is still allowed to wander Genoa City like a lost dog after Lily…..not to mention a lack of MTS! Can’t say I’m surprised about any of them, except TR, bc he & JW were giving it their all in this crap story they’ve been given. And while I am no fan of ER’s Heather, if she truly found out via Twitter (which I totally believe she did) that she was being let go, then that’s just shitty and low on the part of the Y&R bosses. At least have some tact and tell these people face to face; they DO have families and such to support. Log in to Reply kerfuffles September 14, 2011 Yeah, ER apparently found out she was fired via Twitter. While I’m very much happy I will not have to endure her version of Heather on my screen anymore, that was an incredibly shitty way for Y&R to handle it. Maybe it was some kind of leak they didn’t intend but they need to run a tighter ship and tell the actors before this kind of news even has a chance to get out. Geeze…Y&R truly can’t do anything right these days–not even fire actors/character that the audience wants gone. Log in to Reply Smitty September 14, 2011 I didn’t really mind Eden as Heather. Log in to Reply koalygirl September 14, 2011 With one exception I’m fine with that list of Bell’s hit and miss casting style. Tristan Rogers was the one reason to come back to daytime. Colin and Jill was feel good TV and even their drama was meaningful and memorable. The rest of them, meh. Genie Francis could have added so much and help create a solid Atkinson family presence. Between Tristan, Genie and Daniel Goddard (and Jill of course) this family could have had fantastic stories, like MAB said. But she didn’t come through, and she has done a terrible thing to GF by writing her so crazy. Didn’t make GF look good at all. This is a terrible thing for fans who have missed Tristan and were so very happy to come over to Y&R from GH. What are they smokin over at Y&R at the exec table? Big Fail there MAB! I’ll be gone when TR is gone. Log in to Reply Carol2 September 14, 2011 [quote=Smitty]I didn’t really mind Eden as Heather. There should have been one, with her history with Paul, but they never tried. All she’s done is sleep around and get abuse from Victor. Log in to Reply marknsprmo September 14, 2011 Although this is all good news (I don’t mind Tristan except the fact that his character is a thug.), these horribly miscast or nonstarting characters are gone,it does not adress the root of the problem. The writing. I have no more interest right now in what Jack or Mrs C is doing any more than I care about Genevieve. Because these people are just being wasted on this show. Maybe it will take the loss of some heavy hitters on the show to wake the corporation up. Apparently sliding in the ratings isn’t good enough. Wake me up during bloodbath #2. The main problem with Y&R is that they haven’t found the right team in place to fill the immense void Bill Bell left. They should at least hire back a few of the people who understood his vision of the soap, namely Ed Scott and Kay Alden. As teams go I would put: EP-David Shaughnessy (goes back to ’90-91 won 2 in “93 & “04 and was nominated ’99-03 each year. If not he and maybe something fresh but could have the talent of Bill, put Lauralee Executive Producer. She has shown on web series she got some of those Bell jeans…high quality web stories. Head-writer: Kay Alden, Co-head-writer: John F. Smith Executive-In-Charge of Production: Ed Scott, Meaning on both Bell soaps, to keep Brad grounded also, I would keep Jack Smith at B&B as co-head, but Brad needs a co-exe. IMO, it gets to much and Brad gets silly at times. His Co-exe I would pick might be abit controversial is John Conboy. He gave Y&R early on those opulent sets and style which has stuck to this day and with B&B being set in fashion JC could do wonders. Ed Scott watching over Bill’s vision :~ Log in to Reply beautreal September 14, 2011 This is great news and such a move in the right direction but I have actually grown to like Eden Riegel as Heather she never was going to match Vail Bloom in the role for me but all they really had to do was give her a real story. Also if they didn’t give Tristan Rogers this ridiculous storyline to enter with I would be happy for him to stay around thanks to his chemistry with Jess Walton. The other I’ll be happy to see the back of they never should’ve been on this show in the first place. But the best thing Y&R and Sony could do right now is get rid of Maria Arena Bell, Hogan Sheffer and Scott Hamner. And bring in a writing team that knows the history and strengths of the show and bring it back to the vision and legacy that Bill Bell Snr created. Don’t get too excited- this is just a list of admitted failures and redistributed money. By the end of the year a whole new list of 5+ Dlisters will be on. Why can’t Y&R cast Lindsay Lohan. She could get great press. At this point- that seems all it’s about. Log in to Reply alstonboy4315 September 14, 2011 This is ALL good. I enjoyed Genie Francis BRIEFLY, but Genaura has really begun to test my nerves as of late. She’s nothing more than a smirking caricature of a villainess…no real direction or purpose. And Colin’s relationship with Jill disgusts me, sorry. I see definite chemistry between Tristan and Jess, but I don’t like how this storyline makes Jill look weak and pathetic. Jill is one of my favorite Y&R characters. Eden was NEVER Heather to me. All I saw was Bianca Montgomery in Genoa City trying to act like she was big and bad. And Eden’s anemic acting left much to be desired. I have said it before and shall say it again: Not all actresses are versatile enough to play both a heroine and a bad girl, and Eden seems to be one of those limited actresses. NEVER in a million years should she have been cast. Darius, in my opinion, can be a good actor under the right circumstances, and I never found him to be as hideous as everyone else made him out to be, but he lost all his cool points with me back when he did that radio interview and flung around the “N” word like he was getting paid a commission for every time he uttered it. Don’t get me on my soapbox, but I hate people using the “N” word as if it means absolutely nothing. Oh and Malcolm was supposed to be a BIRACIAL man, a fact that Hackarena Bell TOTALLY overlooked, but I promised not to get on that soapbox this evening, so I shall keep my promise. But while this news does serve as a small measure of relief, where are the pink slips for Sean Patrick Flanery, Amelia Heinous and Julie Pace Mitchell? They are certainly long overdue. And as others have pointed out, why the BLEEP is Yvonne Zima still employed with this show? Who is she having sex with? Or secretly related to? Inquiring minds would love to know……… Log in to Reply Carol2 September 14, 2011 Sean Patrick Flannery is listed as being fired. Log in to Reply 1titanman September 14, 2011 Well it was only a matter of time before Genie Francis was going to leave. There was no way in hell they was going to put Laura Spencer on vs. Nikki Newman. Everytime I see Genie and Tristan it like General Hospital 2.0 That house that she lives in is so a Port Charles set. Maria so busy keeping tabs on ABC daytime lineup, but can’t seem to focus on her job! However this is good news! Darius McCrary leaving is the best news all day, and I’m sorry brotha man…I know it hard out here for an actor, but I hope he finds a made for DVD-movie that be at wal-mart to keep the money coming. However they need to continue the list of actors/characters to continue to get rid of. I agree with Jillian, when she said get rid of Kevin, and Kyle, and Im add some more that list; Daniel ( Graziadei a good actor he needs to move to primetime, his storylines has sucked) Pls take Daniel Goddard and Christel too. They bore me to tears. Pls get rid of all the kids from Fen, Summer, all the babies(that costing MTS money) Sophia, can go, along with that blonde hair girl that Noah wants to really fukk! There way too many characters/ actors on this show, and they’re dead weight. I agree w/ harlee490 bring back Kay Alden, Jack Smith writing teams all of Bill Bell people. Not Maria, Scott and Hogan! This show writing is a lazy as LML. Sony needs to stay the fukk out of the business and let the good creative people do the work! Maria needs to write/create her own reality show for the style network, because she failed us the audience, and failed her family in their owned family business…Maria go away! Stop being a Brian Frons/Ellen Wheeler/Dena Higley all wraped up in one! Log in to Reply marknsprmo September 14, 2011 alstonboy I think Darius was doomed from before he got started in the role. Malcom was supposed to be a beautiful man because that was part of who he was. His easy smile and natural swagger and twinkle in his eye is what got him around Genoa City. Darius was just not going to be accepted in that kind of role. They should have cast a really good looking man. It was the only thing we were going to accept. Darius is not ugly but he aint model material. Time and space are not enough for us to forget Shemar Moore. He is about as pretty a person ever to be on a soap. Had they hired say Taye Diggs for the part, I am sure the audience would have warmed up to him! I think Darius is a good actor but he isn’t Meryl Streep. He can not mould himself into ANY part. I also think that Eden needs some acting lessons and to broaden herself. I was NOT a fan of hers the times I saw her on AMC. I think the girl who plays Bianca now is much better than Eden was. She owns the lesbian feelings much more than Eden did. I always felt uncomfortable for her in the lesbian scenes. Eden seems like a good little christian girl that never got to leave the house without an escort. She needs to connect more to the grittier side of life to be able to play the drama. I am not knocking a good wholesome existance, it is just not interesting dramatically speaking. About Yvonne Zima, I think that producers often confuse our hatred of an actor or a role with a love to hate relationship. They can not tell the difference. The reason she keeps popping up is because they think we love to hate her, when really we just hate her. They are trying to create the next Sami Brady (days) or Lisa (atwt). Alot of soaps are guilty of not being able to tell the difference between “hate” and “love to hate” And I am not a Genie Francis fan. I didn’t understand Luke and Laura the first time around and never got Genie at all. So that she makes my teeth ache on Y&R doesn’t really surprise me. She did the same thing on Days 20 years ago. Tristan and Jess have chem, but considering everything Colin has done to Jill, there’s no way I can buy Jill Abbott rolling over and just forgiving Colin so easily. I don’t recall the Winters’ brothers ever being written as biracial. My memory isn’t the greatest, but I don’t think the specifics of their ethnicity were ever discussed. Just because both KSJ and SM are biracial doesn’t necessarily mean the characters were written that way. I equate them as being African American/black like the characters on The Cosby Show regardless of the actors’ ethnicities. The actresses that played Sandra and Denise Huxtable were both biracial, but the Huxtables were never characterized as biracial, they were considered AA/Black. Even though I think DMc was not a good fit (too gruff) and had the ill-advised retread of a lame WTD storyline, I feel like he never was given a chance because people couldn’t get over SM not being in the role. Sorry, but the show must go on. At the risk of getting on my soapbox (no disrespect to you Alstonboy, I love you like a play cousin), SM was never going to come back to Y&R. He used it as a stepping stone and was not going to “move backwards” (his words). So what if DMc wasn’t mixed? Does Peter Bergman look anything like Terry Lester (RIP)? Christel Khalil’s replacement Lily, Daveeta Sherwood was also biracial (not the same ethnicities, but still), looked very different yet still was a viable recast. There were different three actresses on Another World who played Marley and Victoria who other than blonde hair looked different both facially and physically. If OLTL could change an Asian character into a white one (Blair) and the world didn’t come to an end, then I don’t agree that DMc, on paper, was an abomination as Malcolm. The problem was he was written to be much harder than Malcolm ever was. Malcolm was a lover not a fighter (RIP Michael Jackson) and I think DMc, even though he is physically bigger than SM, could have played a suave character, but that doesn’t seem to be what MAB&Co wanted Malcolm. I guess they were trying to say that he changed somehow, but gave no reason why this was the case or why it would make any sense. Just like they did with AH’s Victoria. I always have mixed feelings about cast reduction. The actors, for the most part, are not the problem. They could cut the cast in half, but until the writing (characterization, plots, pacing, tone, juggling of arcs, and real conclusion and closure of plots) and casting decisions improve drastically, this show is in trouble. I think a lot of these actors work their asses off to try to make it work, but it’s not easy when plots are dropped, do a 180, etc. In my opinion, the changes need to happen above the actors. Log in to Reply soapy opie September 14, 2011 Will really only miss Tristan. Colin & Jill had good chemistry, even if the storyline “dumbed down” Jill a bit too much. Eden (a wonderful actress) never seemed to be a good fit as Heather. Also, she & Paul did not match up well as father & daughter. Sean is just plain boring. And, nothing personal against him, but Darius will probably go down as one of the worst daytime recasts–ever. Log in to Reply RealityCheck 33 September 14, 2011 With the exception of TR, I won’t miss any of these characters. It’s time for them to move on. I wish a few others the same exit, but I digress. This doesn’t surprise me in the least. When they fired the great Maura West, then it shows that MAB is a total loser and Y&R is just about done. CBS/Sony have to see that this is the Titanic post-iceberg. I hope Billy Miller and Michael Muhney get off this ship before it sinks for good. Log in to Reply Marland Fan September 14, 2011 There needs to be a writing bloodbath, not a casting one. If they had been given better material, maybe some of these performers would have worked out. I have only seen DM on Family Matters and I liked him there but he was an AWFUL Malcolm recast. Not gonna miss SPF or his non-acting. ER is a good actress but was miscast as Heather. ER is good at playing the heroine(Bianca on AMC) but doesn’t have the ability to portray a sassy lawyer. I just wish MAB, Scott Hamner and Hogan Sheffer would get pink slips as well. Colin made viewers want to see more Jill. How often do you think we will see Jill now? She has no possible love interest on the show. Do you think they will be hiring a new man for her? Instead of firing our older woman they are placing them on back burner, wait not the back burner, it’s probably more accurate to say they are throwing them behind the stove. The writing for Diane was craptactular too, but MW made it work. However, the fact that she found out about her firing on Twitter rather than from her employer is disgusting. Darius was set up to fail from the beginning. Who in their right mind would EVER think he would be a good recast for Malcolm? I never saw a bit of Malcolm in his portrayal, and I’m not just talking about his looks. Sam/SPF is about as interesting as watching paint dry. Rogers and Jess Walton do have great chemistry, but Colin’s pretty much an irredeemable thug and far beneath Jill’s class level. I actually kinda like SPF as Sam, and I kinda thought they were testing a Sam/Victoria pairing, but not enough to lose sleep over. As for the other three, McCrary and Riegel are a long time coming–easily two of the worst recasts of the last decade or so–and Francis can’t decide if her character’s actually a human being or a piss-poor Joan Crawford camp reject. As for Ricky, for some reason I did get a gay vibe from him(however I get the same vibe from Baz on OLTL and apparently that character is “straight”) and my first thought was pairing him with token gay Rafe; Yani Gellman is actually not only easy on the eyes but not a bad actor at all so it’d be nice to see him get some action outside of the courtroom or Jimmy’s bar.
