Frons Promotes ‘Chew’ Developer to V.P. of Programming and Development For ABC Daytime

With ABC Daytime's mass soap eradication almost a fait accompli, there's no need for the Mouse House to be shy about promoting peeps to help turn the lineup into a bunch of recycled versions of The View. Maybe that's why Disney/ABC Televison Group's Daytime Prexy Brian Frons just hired Randall Barone as his new Veep, overseeing The View and The Chew. See the full press release below!

Veteran television producer Randall Barone has been named vice president, Programming & Development, ABC Daytime, it was announced today by Brian Frons, president, Daytime, Disney/ABC Television Group, to whom he will report. In this role Barone will continue to oversee the programming and development for the network's award-winning talk show "The View," as well as "The Chew."

For the past year and a half, Barone was instrumental in the creation and development of "The Chew," working closely with executive producer Gordon Elliot and his team at Follow Productions. "The Chew" is the first show to debut on ABC Daytime in 15 years and combines the best of talk, food and lifestyle programming.

Barone began his career as a producer in Philadelphia. He worked at WXYZ-TV (Detroit) as an Emmy Award-winning producer of various shows and was executive producer in charge of programming at KGO-TV (San Francisco). He was the senior supervising producer of "Good Morning America" from 1990-98, in charge of special projects, and traveled the show throughout Europe, Australia and Alaska. He worked as the senior supervising producer of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" from 1998-99, and returned to ABC to work on the development of several projects for daytime television. In July 2000 he was named creative executive in charge of "The View."

Barone is a recipient of both local Emmy Awards and national Emmy Awards for his work on "Good Morning America." He resides in Manhattan.

Terrible. What about the 100s of people who worked for ABC Daytime he just canned? Many of much have put in 20-30 years that are not working. No loyalty whatsoever. It has mor to do with who worked on the soaps, jobs were lost in many depts once the two shows got the axe. It’s moves like this that make Fron’s look like an executive in ABC’s eyes but we are smart enough to see right through him.

I have not seen any of the chew have not even made an attempt to watch it. I use to watch the Talk but after they got rid of Holly and Leah I have not watched it. At this rate I can soon sell all my tv’s

Well, if this is another indication that Brian Frons has lost his brain and his ability to think rationally, you can bet your bottom dollar that once OLTL goes off of the air in January, that will be the last show I watch on ABC!

Quintessential Frons! Has Sweeney lost her Mind? I mean who runs ABC daytime? Are they broke? Has Disneyworld closed? What about Disneyland? Surely they are about to go into bankruptcy!! OMG!!!

Typical of failure in big business. Promote them and give the illusion that you think they didn’t make a mistake. Ultimately, it will back fire, just like The Chew did.

In Mr. Barone’s defense his promotion is long overdue. You (and I) might not like THE CHEW, but Mr. Barone known as Randy around ABC, has been the man behind THE VIEW for a decade. Having weathered Meredith leaving, Rosie coming and going, Whoopi joining and driving the show to all time high ratings during 2008 and 2009 as well as his 30 + year career from local news in the 70s/80s, GMA and Oprah in the 90s he should have been a VP years ago.

I really don’t care about any of this. What I want now is for ABC to please–and for all that is moral and decent–and for whatever time there is left–please, just give us a decent hour of GH to watch. Please. please…
