DC #658: Prison Break

On today’s Daytime Confidential podcast Luke Kerr, Jamey Giddens, Jillian Bowe and Melodie Aikels dive into all the latest The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, One Life to Live and The Young and the Restless headlines and storylines, including:

Bill Spencer continues to manipulate of Liam and Hope’s relationship on The Bold and the Beautiful. Should B&B refocus on a Katie/Bill/Steffy triangle instead of Steffy/Liam/Hope?

Will’s relationship with Marlena is a highlight of Days of Our Lives, but there are a lot of good reasons to be watching Salem’s citizens in 2012.

The DC gang is counting the days until Ron Carlivati’s episodes of General Hospital begin airing. They weigh in on Liz and Ewan, Scrubs and Michael revealing to Port Charles that Jax is still alive. We know Ted King and Michael Easton are hopping from OLTL to GH, but Jamey reveals that more OLTL stars could be on the way.

One Life to Live’s prison break had the DC crew glued to their TVs. From Lindsay and Troy to Mitch and Alison Perkins, they dive into it all. Cole reunited with Star. Mitch held Natalie captive. Alison reveals a secret to Viki and Clint. Lindsay helped save Nora. It was must see TV.

The Young and the Restless signs Darnell Williams and plans to reunite him with Debbi Morgan in Genoa City. Why is Y&R so intent on bringing on stars from low rated soaps, instead of focusing on its own characters? Was it appropriate for Harmony to refer to Phyllis as “Miss Phyllis?”

All this and listener’s Daytime Confidential Hotline calls on today’s episode.

I'm with Luke on Days' Austin. I want Austin Peck back. Admittedly, he was terrible the first time around, but he's really grown as an actor. If they're going to actually go ahead with Austin/Abby, I would find it more believable with him in the part.

Besides, the man is hot. Smile

Applause to the DC gang for their comments about Y&R. This isn't about trashing a show willingly. It's about saying and complaining about what's wrong with this show. And a lot of things are wrong on Y&R these days.

I agree with you on the "Miss Phyllis" reference. No white character would ever have to read that line ... and that's what this is about. Like Jamey said, Chloe used to work for Phyllis and never said "Miss Phyllis" to her once.

Also don't get Y&R's casting. Of course people need to come in to make a storyline work and everything ... but when you have people like Melody Thomas Scott off the air for months and can't give a storyline to fan favorites like Jess Walton, Doug Davidson or Tracey Bregman ... is it really necessary to bring in all these people we just don't care about? I don't ... I just don't want to see characters like Genevieve, Harmony, Daisy, Angelina, Angelo, Chelsea or even Ronan instead ... not over these veterans.

And if you bring in Chelsea to cause problems at least get Jess Walton over there and once let her be there for her son. When Billy was missing, Jill was saying to Katherine that she really wasn't a good mother and would finally do right by Billy ... and now that he's back, Jill is MIA again in Billy's life. Do something there ... work on their relationship. Make a storyline out of this. I would rather see this - I would in fact love it - than yet another woman who RAPED a man and ended up being pregnant by him. -.-

If Darnell comes to Y&R and plays a drug dealer or a pimp, I'm dead on a slab!!! Maria probably at home watching "Good Times" DVDs now fishing for inspiration! Bet that stupid heifa wish she could raise Esther Rolle from the dead...ugh. Im glad Jamey addressed that fact that their in no Y&R agenda. I've heard podcast filled with Y&R love. Hell, GH and DAYs get blasted alot more than Y&R on DC IMHO. Yes, this is my favorite soap, but I know it's bad. We got Phyllis running around spending her legs for both Nick and Ronan, Sharon marrying Victor, Nikki finding out Deacon killed Diane, Patti still stalking Genura and Chelsea, this little snake bitch Billy knock up, and Y&R sucks! It is on life support. We are as far from Bill Bell's vision as you could get thanks to Maria, Hogan, and Scott. They have produced for bad television for two years straight and deserve to be called out. Simple as that. Got YoHarmony runnin around in a doorag and saying ridiculous lines like, "We was actin like fools tellin errbody..." and "You gon have to talk to Miss Phyllis..." Such racist undertones that even Ray Charles could see. I can only imagine Darnell's character. Hope they are not resurrecting Sofia's dad....

Love the comments about the OLTL prison break! This has been amazing soap and it made me laugh, cry, and also felt McBain should've shot Natalie's ass right in the face. Such a wasted opportunity.... And loved that Nora should've gave into Troy! That would have been so hot. Lol Smile. All that I need is "One Life To Live". Yes, I am finally on the bandwagon. Too bad the show is leaving the airwaves this week. So sad Sad

DAYS is good, but it still needs to become must see TV. Will's coming out, Brady/Madison, and the mayoral election aren't really enough of a wow factor yet. I wish DC had commented on Kola Boof's recent remarks that DAYS needs to capitalize on it's campy past. I kind of agree to an extent. No, I don't want alien twins or green goop from the Indian Reservation back, I just would like to see a grand umbrella story filled with Dimera Intrigue and international adventure. Celeste back in the fold to help locate a kidnapped Lucas after Kate decides to divorce Stefano...Just a thought.

DC Gang, you are amazing!

First of all I just wanna say Hell to the NO about Austin Peck. He has sucked the life out of Days too much and I personally do NOT need to see it more. Patrick has not had much to do yet on the show but one thing he is doing well is the Abby stuff. I like the directions that Days has taken it just needs to move a little faster. I love love love the whole Will thing. His relationship with Marlena, his fight with his mom, his coming out, now his problems with EJ! I also love the story with Alice mystery. It just needs to go somewhere. Overall I am enjoying the show it just needs a little tweek.

Love the podcast gang but typically do and LOVE the rant on Y&R, MAB is the Dena Higley of CBS! Have to agree about Steffy\Liam dull, I want to Heather Tom just bitch slap, because the triangle with Bill\Steffy\Katie is perfect. I am liking DOOL's because of story content has been played and set up has been perfect, the foundation has been built...but Mar\Dar I feel needs another person added to head-writing position that has that type of experience, they need some guidance. Because they need to pump the volume of drama up. I like Patrick's Austin, not familiar with AP's Austin but AP was great Brad.

I was waiting with baited breathe to hear the DC Gang's reaction to the OLTL prison break storyline. Personally I hoping for a few more impressions (not just Alison but Mitch too). Then again Mitch is a thorny subject. From the "eagle spread" Natalie scenes, I got the impression that Mitch was going to rape Natalie. This would have setup a new storyline involving the spawn of Mitch (had Prospect Park delivered).

I am curious, how many DC Podcasters think that MAB is going to incorporate Daisy Duke's car (Dixie) into a Y&R storyline. Also, Sharon and Victor makes me want to scrub myself with Comet, ew.....!

Darnell cast as Pookie the drug dealer.... Mustafa LoL But this is been my gripe for years they keep casting new people in an ole storyline & refuse to write for the cast they have. I hope like hell they dont' bring Natalie or Messica to GH they are two reasons I tuned out of OLTL for good.

The DC pundits have me laughing (out LOUD) as usual. I whole-heartedly concur in terms of the Y&R situation. I don't know what it is going to take to get someone who knows how to write at the helm of Y&R, but until they do, their vets and long-time viewers who remember Y&R in it's heyday (those who still watch) will continue to suffer under the poison pen of MAB.

I am so disappointed that she chose to make Debbie Morgan portray a subservient, low grade character when Morgan has the chops to come in and be what Diahann Carroll was on Dynasty. Instead MAB chose to go the easiest route and bring on a low grade character (who Jamey rightly said has far less dignity than the original incarnation of Yolanda) with the idea that after a makeover and some training in the Eliza Doolittle charm school, she will transform. Except, we've seen this all before (but better executed) with characters like Nina Webster and Drucilla Barber, neither of which would've referred to Phyllis as MISS Phyllis (with Dru it would've more likely elicited a 'Miss Thing' followed by a click of the teeth).

Please keep talking about this, DC. Even though I no longer watch Y&R, it still sticks in my craw that this show is being written so poorly and most disturbingly, some viewers appear to be getting used to it!

Thank you DC crew for going in HARD on Y&R. The snatch and grab from defunct soaps and other stunt casting is completely ridic on Y&R. And the YoHarmony character is a HAM. I covered "Miss Phyllis" already in the other thread, but I agree with everything: the do rag, the over-the-top- slang, etc is just too much. The sugar bowl probably made me angrier than Miss Phyllis. Gotdamn, the woman just smoked a little crack; she wasn't raised by wolves! If they effed this one up, what are they going to do with Darnell Williams?

As far as Y&R....whatever. I'm done discussing that.

OLTL...I've tried and tried and tried, and I just don't for the life of me GET THE LOVE for this awful awful show!!! The show sucks and no matter how much some of these sites promote it as being the next Gone With the Wind, it just doesn't SELL to me. It's over the top campy, bad acting, ridiculous stories, and it's just...ugh. It sucks!!!!

On B&B...I'm so tired of Steffy/Liam/Hope/Thomas....and the other stories on B&B aren't interesting to me AT ALL. The show is still pretty decent as far as writing, it's just I don't find the stories entertaining because the frontburner characters at the moment don't entertain me.

DAYS...I'm liking more now than ever. I haven't been a long time fan of DOOL and I started watching under Dena Higley...so yeah, this is like Heaven to me compared to what I was seeing a year or so ago.

GH sucks.

So to sum it all up....OLTL is waaaaay overrated, GH sucks, B&B is just "ok", DAYS is really good, Y&R is unfairly treated overall...and that's the way I see it.

I said i wouldn't comment on the YoHarmony thing...but geesh. The way Debbi Morgan CHOSEEEEEEEEEE and i repeat CHOSE to say "errbody" has nothing to do with writing. I still think she flubbed the line, and nothing is going to convince me otherwise. As for the rest of the show, NO i'm not a Y&R fan at the moment. NO I don't find the show interesting at the moment. YES I roll my eyes more than I smile at this show. SURE I thikn the black actors are unfairly treated...that's never been debatable to me. But what I get annoyed with is that this "Y&R hatred" as some people may peg it did NOT just start with Debbi Morgan's character. This "Y&R hatred" has been going on for years now. Y&R has had some ridiculous stories, and I've always agreed when people complained about it...because it has SUCKED at some points. But also, at some points it has been INCREDIBLE. But yet, it just seems like its SOOO freakin hard to actually hear ONE positive thing about the show on this site. I love all the DC crew...ALL of them, but it annoys me to no end to hear "OH gosh...OLTL was must see tv...we had ten villains running around town with guns and knives and blah blah blah...it was brilliant. But Y&R..I had to turn it off because they don't treat the black characters right"....MEANWHILE, in 555-5555 we probably saw more of the Winters than we had in YEARSSS...since Dru's death. SO yeah, it annoys me and it also annoys me when people try to tell me not to "read" their posts because they are complaining and if I don't like it I shouldn't read it. WELLLLL, the same should be said for those posters who told me that. If you don't like the show, then don't watch the shit!! And if you don't watch the shit, then stop complaining about it!!! It goes both ways...and I'm done with that being said...

For what it's worth, stoney07, I have never loved OLTL either. It has pretty much NEVER interested me. I have tried many, many times, but I just cant's watch it and I don't get the love for that show, either. While I've never thought the DC crew has an agenda, I do think they tend to give ABC soaps the benefit of the doubt more than the other soaps. This is not a diss, but I've felt that way at times. But none of us are completely objective all the time, and it's human nature to speak more of what is wrong instead of what is right. I personally think ABCDaytime has always been subpar, but that's just me. At the end of the day, I think the DC folks are still fair overall. Even if I don't always agree about the ABC soaps, I do think there is a lot of good commentary on this site and the podcasts. And they don't always praise OLTL. They used to go in HARD on the black family on OLTL about a year ago with all that Good Times/Alex Haley's Roots line delivery some of those actors were giving. And they still talk about the girl who plays Destiny(?). You think the talk of TBSL on Y&R is bad! And there have also been times they have praised Y&R. When MAB took over, they praised the shit out of Y&R, to the point people accused them of having an agenda in Y&Rs favor. I believe on the End of the Year podcast on Larry Flick's radio show, they said Y&R has been on an upswing recently. They have also been praising MTS's return and often praise the acting on the show. They've also been really hard on GH, which is interesting, because they were accused of having an unfair positive bias for GH in the past. I think every soap has its day in the sun and its day damned to hell on DC. So there you go!

I'm not trying to tell you how to think, just trying to give some perspective.

They had me laughing too. B&B though is where the writers need to focus on. The triangle that needs the most attention because its got the most mojo is bill/steffy/katie. Having hope as the poster child for abstinence was fine for a social issue message but it got mucked up when brooke told her daughter to go have carnal relations without benefit of marriage because the advertising campaign was taking too long and in their hearts they were really married. Well that went off the rails and now we have hope crying every other day as she's kissing a married man (Liam) all the while still telling the audience that she doesn't respect his marriage but she needs to wait until marriage to do anything. At the same time she's kissing Thomas too, in order to forget and try and move on. Get this settled. Its not an equal triangle between steffy/liam/hope. Steffy carries the scenes and drags Liam along who drags Hope along. Get her out of there stat and give her a better match up - Katie as both these 2 are contenders for Bill.

I've pretty much been an ABC soap girl for about 25+ yrs, though I did watch GL from Dec 08-Sept 09. And I briefly watched DAYS for Crystal Chappell, but even she wasn't able to keep me tuned in to that hot mess for long. I really just don't care for the characters the same way I did for GL or ABC soaps.

As for the websoaps, there are a few that I've watched: Venice (all three successful seasons - S3 finale is Wed, Feb 8); also Anyone But Me, Gotham, Empire, Fumbling Through The Pieces. I couldn't get in to The Bay. I watched a few eps of Anacostia but couldn't really get into that either. I will at least check out DeVanity and see what the interest is.

VENICE is well shot, well acted, beautiful scenery, good actors that Crystal manages to get MUCH better performances out of (for some) than they had on their respective shows, particularly Nadia - didn't know she could act before VENICE, because I couldn't stand her DAYS' Chloe character. Still not fond of her VENICE character, but at least she can act better.
