Could General Hospital Move to Primetime?!

Fasten your seatbelts, kiddies. We're about to head back up on the roller coaster. An article in this week's print edition of TV Guide (with NCIS on the cover) claims ABC is considering moving its final daytime soap General Hospital to primetime as a limited-run telenovela!

Update: The article is now available online at TVGuide.com!

According to the report from the magazine's Stephen Battaglio, an ABC insider shared the deets with him, and discussed how relatively inexpensive it would be to take GH to primetime. If you follow me on Twitter, you already know I think this kind of move is our best shot at keeping daily soaps in production. Univision often bests networks among the Big Four with the juggernaut ratings of their closed-ended, primetime daily soaps or telenovelas.TeenNick has also had success with a daily, telenovela-esque version of the popular Canadian teen series Degrassi: The Next Generation, as well as British import House of Anubis.

I think soap fans would line up for a 13-week nightime version of GH — especially if that's our only option to see the beloved series live on! I just hope ABC commits to making this happen, should GH be cancelled this April to make room for Katie Couric. Soap lovers—not to mention the casts and crews of these programs—have been jerked around quite enough.  Would you watch a primetime version of General Hospital? Sound off in the comments!

Absolutely! Telenovela-style GH written by Ron Carvialtl could be a very good thing as the stories would pick up the pace and offer more 'actual' cliffhangers. The writing and staging could be a lot more tight and the production-value per episode could improve. Plus, brief arcs are more likely to be moved to DVD sets after being aired. That would be convenient to watch blocks of episodes. How many of us have recorded several episodes in blocks to watch at later dates?

Now, if only OLTL and AMC could receive similar consideration...

I already watch it in the evenings when I get home. I'll watch whenever it's on as long as the crap we've been watching for the last 1-2yrs is GONE!!! I grew up watching JJ and VMG in the 90's and I've sporadically watched lately because it's such a mess... Oh what should have been...

I'm confused since I don't know much about telanovelas... WOuld it just be 13 weeks and then be over with? Or would it come back for a 13 week run each season? I think restructuring the writing to package it into short stints could really help. I think all of us LOVED GH: Night Shift, so if it could be like that, every season, I'd be happy!

It would be like 13 weeks of one storyline then 13 weeks of another storyline. So no Sonny and Fake Kate for 13 weeks!

I LOVE the caption picture.

Didn't anyone learn anyone from Prospect Park? Geez, even from the CBS cancellations of ATWT and GL, we've been strung along and NOTHING EVER WORKS OUT! Listen. I'm still waiting for the promised Twin Peaks comic book. STOP!

Don't drink the kool-aid folks...this is the same setup that AMC and OLTL had. Ravenbeauty is warning everyone to keep fighting to keep the show in Daytime...ABC is trying to soften people up and fill them with false hope to avoid initial backlash.

Don't drink it!

ABC already tried doing a telenovela style soap and that was an epic failure. Even if I actually believed ABC would ever consider putting its lowest rated soap on prime time (even NBC's primetime lineup would out perform it), I doubt they would try doing that again, especially since the last time they tried it was in January 2000 with Port Charles, General Hospital's spin off. I agree with the others, who think that ABC is just yanking fans' chains before yanking GH off the air.

If you want to save General Hospital, watch it. Even if you can't stomach the current mafia-centric and misogynistic storylines, leave it on in the background. I use the 3 pm time slot to catch up with my reading (and when Sam starts whining or Carly starts screeching, I mute the t.v. and turn up my Ipod). Once Carlivati and Valentini's storylines start, I will begin actually paying attention to the show again.

Also, DO NOT watch The Chew and The Revolution. Show ABC that we don't want more talk shows (especially ones like The Revolution that tell you you're not good enough as is and you need to change despite the fact that they use P!nk's "Perfect" in its commercials). We need to get Mario Batali's orange crock wearing behind off of the television and we need to make Ty Pennington regret ending Extreme Makeover Home Edition.

GREAT IDEA! EACH 13-WEEK SEGMENT COULD END IN A CLIFFHANGER LEADING TO THE NEXT SEGMENT!
IN MEXICO, VENEZUELA, COLOMBIA AND BRAZIL, ALL TELENOVELAS ARE NIGHTIME SHOWS. IN BRITAIN THE SOAPS ARE NIGHTIME SHOWS AND EVERY SUNDAY THERE IS A TWO HOUR OMNIBUS RECAP OF WHAT HAPPENED DURING THE PAST WEEK. IT IS REALLY ONLY IN THE U.S. THAT SOAPS HAVE BEEN ABANDONED IN DAYTIME.
JUST THINK ALL POPULAR NIGHTIME SHOW ARE REALLY TELENOVELAS!

I don't like GH or OLTL, so no, I wouldn't watch them in primetime OR daytime. AMC I would watch, if AN/LB were still writing and the production values improved!

I don't have a dog in the hunt.

But they need to be very clear by what they mean by adopting a telenovela format. Telenovelas don't typically continue in a series of multiple 13 week cycles - which by definition would make them pretty much what US soaps are now (minus strong conclusions to the arcs of the cycle). They CONCLUDE at the end of the cycle, and then there are whole new shows with new characters for the next cycle. I haven't watch them in a long time, but telenovelas rarely spin off or continue into a new cycle, the only exceptions being the ones with very good ratings.

SO ABC - do you mean GH would get 13 weeks and then conclude? Or do you mean just borrowing form the telenovela concept and breaking GH up into mini arcs every 13 weeks? Because the two scenarios are very different things.

They did that with Port Charles with 13 week archs. It was in the daytime. ABC still cancelled Port Charles. If ABC is going to put GH on at night, where would they put it? If it works why not put AMC and OLTL back on at night. I just had a thought, if ABC loves these dumb shows that they put on in place of the soaps, they could put the soaps back on in the afternoon and put their stupid shows on at night.

According to the actual TVGuide article, GH would air in prime-time for 13 weeks per year, airing in the summer only. It would NOT be year-round.

ABC doesn't need to play those kinds of games and wouldn't waste their time and money bothering. The soaps and their fans just aren't that important to them. If they were, they wouldn't have canceled the shows in the first place. Despite a lot of internet noise, they faced very little real-world backlash over AMC and OLTL's surprising, simultaneous cancellations. Only one minor advertiser pulled their ads and that was only temporary and there were barely 30 protesters at the ABC upfronts just weeks after the announcement. That was it. The Prospect Park deal came months after that so ABC was under no real pressure to make a deal with anyone at all. They only did it because, if it worked out, they could've made some money off of properties that they weren't gonna use.

The reaction to the cancellation of GH will be purely nostalgic, the loss of the soap of Luke & Laura and all that jazz but a lot of the shows' fans already know how terrible it is and have known for more than a year that cancellation was inevitable. The infusion of refugees from OLTL into the mob-centered GH that everyone already hates will create a bizarre, awkward mess that will only hasten audience apathy.

SMOKE and MIRRORS. That's all I see.

It's an interesting idea but GH's future, if it has one, is some place other than ABC. And personally, I'd rather see it off ABC or off completely than to be bloodied and battered by the executives at ABC who don't know a damn thing about hiring good soap people to write and produce this show.

GH Night Shift Season 2 was a very watchable show. It may have been the last GH related episodes that weren't filled with misogyny and stupidity. By some miracle, ABC let a writer write for the characters on the canvas rather than making the characters fit the story. Unfortunately, this concept never translated to GH.

How many of our favourite GH'ers would/could work only 13 weeks a year?
How many really good writers would do the same?

I'm not going to lie if this happens I'm going to be mad. Why? Because the same treatment should've been afforded to the networks top rated soap... OLTL. It just figures they'd do this for GH, cause everything is handed to GH on a silver platter. OVER it!

U would enjoy it it happened. I won't get my hopes up though, sice this could very easily be just more ABC distraction. I hope that GH will stay on daytime!

The politics of GH killed it, so I have no hopes that will change, even with a new regime. One man (Brian Frons) was allowed for years to hand pick failed pairings and push them to the point where now ratings will NEVER recover. Since so many people got fed up and left, why would changing it to a nighttime serial change that?

If the agenda is still there (Carson/JaCancellation) people simply WILL NOT WATCH. 3 years of 1.6's have proven that over and over.

Let it die people.

I will watch no matter what - but yea you know OLTL and AMC should have been really considered carefully before throwing them under a bus. We all adjust cause we have to and we are taught balance in life no matter what. I cant let myself get unbalanced by a total nut job decision,. BUT there are many people who are totally distraut, who need to be told that they cant make themselves sick, namely my mother. Not doing too good. Raised kids and told grandkids about characters. All our kids have known Bo and Nora cause of my mother. Let me tell everyone something. It would have been no skin on anyone's back to realize some things you cant touch. An entire broadcast company can eventually suffer cause of their bullshit.

JAMEY - does this mean 13 weeks a year or a different story line every 13 weeks? I'd like to hear it from you.

You got that right. ABCD has been playing us all for chumps -- both the viewers and most everyone involved in the production of these shows -- for what seems like forever.

Just another story to deflect what will inevitably be. Now when ABC cancels it they can say: "We tried diligently to save GH, even looked at bringing it into primetime".

In the meantime, the disgruntled AMC and OLTL fans get to say "GH was always the favorite".

This, like the announcement of the OLTL cast members coming to GH two days before OLTL ended, is just another planted story---just like the ones criticizing La Lucci for PP's fiasco, just like the one's that swore AMC's demise was only a rumor, etc, etc...

ABC will keep us spinning as long as we listen to their spin.

I would watch it. But not if it's like Nightshift. I didn't like how it veered so off course. There would need to be some continuity. And, I think daytime soap fans would have a problem with the storyline ending after 13the weeks. Do couples ride off into the sunset and new actors come on board for the next cycycle? It would definitely be interesting and it would be nice to see the production quality improve. Maybe, they could actually do remotes again like the old days?

This is in response to one of the other posters. It's not fair to blame one couple on the demise of the show. There are JaSAm fans out there. The ratings have been on a downhill slide for a while now. I believe it even started way back when Liaison were still a couple. The show just needs better writing and more variety. We need to stand behind the new team and try to enjoy the show w/o so much negativity.
