General Hospital's Jen Lilley: "I Am Staying as Maxie"

General Hospital's Jen Lilley took to Twitter yesterday to reveal she is staying on as Maxie, and has asked that fans stop being so hateful about her having replaced Kirsten Storms, due to unforseen circumstances. See her tweet below:

I agree. I must admit, I haven't watched GH in a very long time (Not since she's been on) so I don't know how she is as an actress, BUT I think fan negativity gets extremely tiring really quickly now. I hardly even visit message boards and blogs anymore because EVERYTHING is so freakin' negative. I feel sorry for the actress because it's a job to her and its how she makes her living, and she has to deal with rude people tearing her down constantly. But, I guess it's all a day in the life of an actress. It will prepare her to develop a tough skin and look beyond the haters.

I am hoping the best for Kirsten, and I am embracing Jen. She has done a wonderful job. She is beautiul and talented. Before twitter, facebook or the internet or that matter, years ago, we never even knew if a character left the show. We got up one day and they were gone, replaced, or a new character would show up. We accepted it. To all the people out there who get on the internet and openly scoff a person, remember you are not exepmt from the Karma you are also probably wishing on the people who canceled your soaps. Leave people alone, get the hate out of your heart, and chill the hell out. Jen, I applaud you and stay away from twitter. Do not aggrivate yourself if thats whats going on.

I just started back up, 2 weeks ago, and I find her to be completely different from Kirsten, and it was jarring to start out with. But, I have gotten used to her. My only wish is that they would gently start pushing her character to change into something that fits her strong points, instead of forcing her into Kirsten's version of Maxie. Maybe Ron will do that.

I admit too at the begining of her tenure, I had my moments when I couldn't stop comparing her to KS. Since then, I've found much to enjoy about her in the part and wish the WRITING would show Maxie in a less abrasive light. In some ways it reminds of the comparisons we may have all made whenever any other actors/actresses have been recast. (Carly-4 actresses/Lucky-3 actors/Kate-2 actresses are the easiest that come to mind.) Having said that, I'm going to continue supporting her being in the role by not turning GH off and/or fast forwarding scenes. (Even if some are painful to witness.) She strikes me as a sweet and honest individual and it's sad that many take out their frustration on her for a situation that is out of her control. I wish her much luck and love for her continued success both on GH and in any future endeavors. She has made me a fan of her work. Sometimes that's all any artist would like... Innocent

I am getting used to her, but I don't like Maxie at all any more. I used to have a soft spot for her and even when I didn't like the things she did I would understand her behavior because KS gave Maxie layers of motivation and feelings. JL does not do this for me. People can blame the writing, but Maxie has always been written as selfish and b*tchy, but KS added layers with her acting choices that made you feel for the character even when you hated what she was doing.

I have nothing against JL, and I would never tweet, email or write anything negative directly to her, but I just don't like Maxie with JL playing her.

She also needs to get a thicker skin if she wants to be in the acting business. Success and failure as an actor is based solely on how the audience views you and how critics critique you. Some will love you. Some will hate you. If you can't deal with both in a healthy way, then consider another career.

js3557 - as I have said in my previous post, years ago this kind of talk did not exist. And Im really only going back as soon as 10-15 years ago. People are people, working to support themselves or family. If you want to get into a particular profession, of course with anything you need to be thick skinned. But I would draw a line with having to be thick skinned for people that are hating for no reason. Love and hate of a character is understandable, but people were attacking her as a person cause she got a role that has been played by the same person for ages. That is plain out ignorance and arrogance. I think this particular person has handled this whole situation very well, and if she chose to stand up for herself and show her vulnerability that she is hurt that people are hurting her for no reason, to say she should consider another career is a bit much.

I have nothing against Jen...she's a beautiful girl and a good actress and I don't blame her at all for the way I feel about Maxie right now.

However, I hope the new writers start taking her down another path because she doesn't play Maxie as sympathetically as Kirsten did and I don't "love to hate" Jen's version. If "Maxie" can start to grow and become less self-absorbed, I think Jen could play her very well.

So sad she had to actually come out and say that. Sometimes soap fans are RUFF! Good luck to her and hopefully also Kirsten gets better soon.

I've never cared for the character (my fav was always Georgie Girl) except for on a few occasions & the same thing happen when Kirsten took over the role from the previous actress one day you're in the next day you're out that's show biz. At the moment I'll just look forward to when she stops hurling insults at Elizabeth in dialog its gotten old.

The thing is for fans to realize this is a job for her & in these economic times everyone can use their jobs especially when the future of GH has not been announced who knows how long GH has left she may not be around that much longer anyway...and she's probably cheaper than Kirsten ... good luck to both actresses future endeavors

Ppl need to have a seat. While she started out mimicking Kirsten, Jen has really found her take on the character. And while I wish Kirsten the best, Jen is now Maxie to me.

Sorry nothing against JL but her version of Maxie is a cold hearted bitch. KS's version had layers and warmth and history and chemistry with all of the actors. JL does not have chemistry with any of them! So for me, Maxie is dead. Though I would never write, email or tweet anything negative to JL, her acting is subpar to me. I consider her version of Maxie to be a brand new character and one that I do not like in the least!

I just hope that KS is ok and that this decision had nothing to do with her health issues. I wish someone would tell us how she is doing!!! Sad

I hope this means Days will bring back Kristen Storms as Belle, I hope GH gets rid of Jason Cook as well so he can come back as Shawn D. Days needs them back bad, outside of Will and Abby the younger set is too boring.

I don't know what more she could have written. That was well done. I wish more of the people who write on blogs could stop and think that what they write might be read by the people they are writing about. I'm sure if someone criticized every little thing they did in THEIR job, they would change their ways.

I wondered when I should start watching GH to get ready for the arrival of the Llanview folks. I am going to start watching today, in hopes of seeing how Lilley tackles the role of Maxie.

What a class act! It must be really hard replacing someone as loved as Kirsten Storms. For Jen Lilley to have such empathy for everyone involved, including the fans, is very impressive!
I love Kirsten but I think that Jen has done a really good job too. I never thought that anyone could replace Roger Howarth on OLTL but I ended up loving Trevor St.John. Anyway, I think that Jen has gone above and beyond what anyone expected her to do and we need to give her our support. Giving Jen our support takes nothing away from our affection for Kirsten. There is no reason why we can't love them both.

While I applaud Jen's comments, I have to be honest and say that Kristen Storms was Maxie Jones to me. I do not think that JL has the same chemistry with Brad Anderson, Julie Berman or even John York, IMO. It's not her fault, that's just the way it is.

As for how she plays Maxie, I think at the beginning she played the ditsy Maxie and it was too jarring especially considering one day Maxie was played by Kristen and the next by Jen. I just kept waiting for Kirsten to come back. I want to see the vulnerable Maxie, the one who wouldn't rest until she got Spinelli back and not the Jackel, P.I., not just the selfish, vindictive Maxie.

I hope that the writers give her better material to work with, but also, now that she knows that the role is hers, I hope she makes Maxie her own.

I sincerely hope that Kirsten's health improves, and I wish her well.

I agree with the others. I don't like her version or interpretation of Maxie. The writing hasn't changed, but the approach has.

Characters are cast all the time, and I don't fault her for that. However, there are some characters where the acting choice can determine whether you like or hate the character. Just like some characters are written as evil but you get that actor that makes people love them anyway. Or how some actors can play a good character without being boring...not everyone can do that.

To me...this is just like that. I don't like her version of Maxie. I don't think its a bash of the actress and I am not trying to do so. We all have our likes and dislikes, and I dislike it.

Until I see an official press release that states JL is officially the new Maxie, I will always hope that KS returns. Obviously this is an issue of health so I wouldn't expect to see her return to Days unless GH doesn't want her which is not the vibe I'm getting. Endometrisis is a very difficult illness to deal with, my best friend has it and it is incredibly painful...to the point where you need to go to the hospital. We all feel for Kirsten and I believe Jen is very genuine in her words. Jen's portrayal of Maxie has been different, refreshing, but also a step back to what the character used to be when portrayed by Kirsten. I agree with others that the current portrayal of Maxie has nothing that we "love to hate" about her. There are no layers of depth there. I have seen Lilley on rare occasions take Maxie there, but it has not been frequent enough for me to really care who she belongs with Spinelli or Matt. Perhaps a director needs to give her better direction to really take the character there. Acting is a craft much like anything else we do in life. I fully believe Jen is capable of taking the character there. It is simply a wait and see game. Kirsten will always be Maxie to me until I can see Maxie as a character to care for emotionally instead of a comic relief of a blonde ditzy stereotype. I look forward to Kirsten's return as much as I look forward to Jen Lilley exploring the depths of Maxie Jones.

This makes me worry about Kirsten Storms. I have a soft spot for her. I don't know if it is the casting change or the sucktitude of the writers but Maxie has lost her likability. I think Maxie's love for Georgie, Mac, Robin, and Spinelli softened KS' Maxie. JL's Maxie hasn't been given a lot of that writing. She has really only been shown as selfish. Maxie's relationship with Matt doesn't seem real. I am not sure I even remember them having a date. I feel like I have seen little of Matt since the character was introduced and mostly that was snarking at his brother. He and Maxie have mostly had their relationship off screen. He has shared more one on one scenes with Liz than with Maxie. She has shared more screen time with Anthony lately than Mac, Robin, or Matt. They haven't done her any favors with the writing.

I do feel bad if fans are being mean to her on the internet. THat is harsh but the word fan does come from the word fanatic. Her plea is that fans stop being hateful to her personally. It is bad if you go to her twitter account and follow her for the sole reason being to tell her that you hate her. The same for her facebook page. I do think she should be less thin skinned if she is talking about GH fan pages or message boards. That is just the nature of soap acting these days. Are people just sending her hateful mail? It isn't her responsibility to take care of KS fans. It isn't her fault that she wants a job.

YES!!!

Jen is Maxie now for me. She's proven herself time & time again. Good for her.

now Kirsten, i don't know what is up with her. But she needs to stay in rehab for whatever addiction she's going through.

I'll be praying for her.

I don't wish anything bad for Kirsten, I hope all of her medical problems get resolved, but I've never liked her as an actress. I didn't like her on Days and I don't like her on GH. In my opinion, she is NOT a good actress. AND from what I've read about her and see of her on Dirty Soap, she seems like a snotty, conceited, !@##$. I think the character of Maxie needs an overhaul. Change her somewhat.

giogio - I agree with you that people should not be attacking JL on a personal level, but I think that she should expect people to critique her on her acting. It's part of being an actress. It's part of being famous. It sucks that there are crazy people out there who will tweet/email/write directly to her and say nasty things, but that is when she should block the tweets/emails or throw away the letters. In the business she has chosen, there will be people who adore her and those that will hate her. She has to be able to handle fame and all the trappings that come with it in order to succeed and remain emotionally healthy. She can't let the crazies get to her...even if that means getting an assistant or intern to read and sort her mail/tweets/emails.

Do you think that Steve Burton melts down every time a hater writes something mean about him on the internet? No...he just blocks them and moves on. I know this because he has said so in interviews and in his tweets. That's the healthy way to deal with the crazies. Sadly, by sending out this mass tweet to the haters, she is unintentionally adding fuel to the fire. They are going to be even more incensed and crazy now. (IMHO)

I know Kirsten Storms is ill, but part of me thinks she just doesn't want to come back to a sinking ship. I think she may want to explore other areas in her career. I knew that she wasn't coming back. I wish her a speedy recovery in any case.

It is rough being a recast of a popular, beloved character. When Ron and Frank come on board, maybe they can write the character better, and people won't hate Maxxie so much.

Stop with this Rehab crap. That is very ignorant of you. Do yourself a favor & Google Endometriosis and find out how chronic of an illness it is before you call KS a liar and tell her to stay in Rehab for her addiction

Ridicolous, arogant & intolerant

^^ I agree. I think Jen Lilley is doing a good job but it's the writing of Maxie that's awful. Kirsten is a good actress but even she couldn't elevate the current writing. I wish Kristen back to good health and on to another career move.
