HomeTagsComings & GoingsAs The Writing Room Turns: DAYS Ditches Marlene McPherson and Darrell Ray Thomas, Jr.; Re-Hires Gary Tomlin and Chris Whitesell! Jamey Giddens April 4, 2012 Comings & Goings, Days of Our Lives 18 Comments I bet the dude who has to paint over parking space labels at the Days of Our Lives studio barely even gets to go on his lunch break! Soap Opera Network is reporting Ken Corday has fired head writers Marlene McPherson and Darrell Ray Thomas, Jr. The pair has reportedly been replaced by Gary Tomlin and Chris Whitesell — whom Corday fired as the soap's co-executive producer and co-head writer respectively in May 2011. Whip meet lash! McPherson and Thomas didn't even make a full year at the sudser they were brought in to "reboot," following the shiteous tenure of one Dena Higley. Unfortunately, the duo's efforts never really did much to spike the serial's ratings. I've always heard really good things about Tomlin and Whitesell. Several industry insiders insist they were responsible for practically everything decent during Higley's reign of terror (the Nicole/Sami baby switch for one!). It will be interesting to see what they do with the show without Higley's disastrous influence. Best of luck to McPherson and Thomas, whom I feel should both be commended for their work in Salem. Will (Chandler Massey) coming out and bonding with his Grammy Marlena (Deidre Hall) is the best current arc on daytime. Someone should snap these two up for their writing team, ASAP. Or better yet, they should develop a YA LGBT soap for LOGO! 18 Responses angelskies April 4, 2012 I hope this doesn’t mess with Will’s storyline in a negative way. Log in to Reply alstonboy4315 April 4, 2012 Ever heard of the saying: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it? It befuddles me that the one show that is actually IMPROVING under the guidance of new writers gets a creative makeover, while Y&R, which is definitely NOT benefiting from its writing, continues to sputter along creatively. Log in to Reply bonobochick April 4, 2012 And the clusterfuck goes round and round. :~ I hope this actually helps the show. Log in to Reply days4ever April 4, 2012 I don’t think the constant change does any good. Why didn’t they just put Chris Whitesell and Gary Tomlin in as writers from the start and get rid of Dena? Didn’t Gary write during the writers strike for a soap (maybe OLTL)? I see a lot of the cast being let go. Galen is lucky he is friends with Gary Tomlin or he would be first to go in my mind (even though I love him). Chloe should come back for sure and Jack and Jen should be used along with Maggie and Victor (and Justin Adrienne but I doubt it). Log in to Reply Cornfed April 4, 2012 I’m really upset about this, it totally sucks. Not a big Gina/Pawn fan but i’m REALLY happy w/all the returns thus far. F*(#(#&#&(#&! Log in to Reply soapjunkie88 April 4, 2012 That’s terrible. DAYS has improved so much under their regime. Not everything has been great since the reboot but it’s been a MAJOR improvement over everything Dena Higley ever wrote for that show. What I don’t understand, DAYS fires this duo but Y&R still has to keep up with this awful trio headed by Maria Arena Bell. Make your move there, Sony!!!! Log in to Reply LizzieVee April 4, 2012 All this constant turmoil behind the scenes is not good for any show. No wonder soaps are failing. There is no consistancy in front of and behind the cameras. Actors come and go, writers come and go, Execs come and go and the fans are just go. Log in to Reply blake3b April 4, 2012 Sucks because the show is really good the past few months. I’m hoping it will get better with the new team and I hope none of the vets and returning favorites are let go because of this. Log in to Reply Cornfed April 4, 2012 Days isn’t always riveting tv now, but at least more realistic, and down to earth and every character is written with some intelligence. I wouldn’t mind if Galen Gerring was let go but PLEASE don’t F with Bryan Datillo or Lisa Rinna. PLEASE! I liked the idea of a male/female writing team. Oh well… Log in to Reply Ryan-Scott April 4, 2012 Damn! Log in to Reply appleridge April 4, 2012 Given that Gary was EP & was the one that told Chandler that Will’s gay and Gary hired Freddie as Sonny. I dont see that story changing with Gary as HW. We may get More story on sonny.. Before Gary;s last airdate as EP, Sept 2, 2011, there was a lot of focus on Sonny . Plus it was Gary as EP and Dena as HW that wanted sonny & will together sooner. The problem I had with Days is that outside of the coming out & those involved in that, all other stories sucked. Plus all the stories were slow and needed to be paced better, including Will’s. even though the coming out story dialouge was great, Will had the same convo too many times. Outside of “Will’s Coming Out” and some of the Sami stories, the rest of the stories suck SO bad. I truly believe the writing room is divided into sects to write stories because I cannot believe the same writers who write dialogue for Will and Marlena write the shit that is The Princess Gina/Pawn Redux! I applaud DAYS for the September reboot and it’s true effort of improving the show (and it has.) I hope that spirit is not lost with the new writing regime! Log in to Reply GatesBear April 4, 2012 I am sad to see the new writing team go. However, I will echo what a lot of other posters are saying, other than the Will storyline… everything kind of stunk. The pacing was uneven, and big reveals were let downs. One example, the whole Abigail/Austin thing, back in the day would have lasted for years based on a single lie… kind of like when Sami lied about Will. Now, she lies, everyone believes her for a week or two and then the truth is revealed? What’s the point? i know we saw her for a brief second but NuCeleste looks like a giant compared to Lexie. I miss Tanya Boyd. John and Gina, this is fast-forward worthy, no one wants to see this story played out again for a second time. The first time was bad enough. Didn’t both John and Hope have a chip in their brain that activated the other personalities? And now we’re led to believe that some weird gas was able to bring out Gina and the Pawn again? Really? Log in to Reply Nathang1983 April 5, 2012 I think one of the problems that NBC/Sony had with McPherson/Thomas was that they had no headwriting experience. They were not well-known at all before they came to DOOL. For NBC/Sony, Gary Tomlin especially means stability and familiarity. Now if only Sony would go start an upheaval at Y&R! I can’t see them getting rid of a Bell, but they sure could kick Hogan Sheffer and Scott Hamner to the curb! Log in to Reply lostfan April 5, 2012 Very upsetting, because reboot and return of characters has been great. Will story obviously the best, but it has been so wonderful to have all of the returnees and connections to the famililies. If actors are let go, it should be Lisa Rinna–she doesn’t act anymore as Billie–she walks on as Lisa Rinna. I definitely want Galen to stay–i don’t understand the negative comments I read about him–he is gorgeous and great actor. I really wouldn’t miss Abby, melanie, gabby or Chad (although casey Jon deidrick is hot)–their characters don’t really serve much purpose. Finally, does anyone know if Peggy McCay has had health problems–it seems like it–and if she is going to be ok? Log in to Reply SoapArmageddon April 6, 2012 Marlene and Ray were doing a very uneven job. The Will and Sami stories are good but most of the other stuff has few bright spots. But then again I firmly believe that a lot of the storyline direction must be coming from Ken Corday himself and the new EP, as in the Alamainia fiasco that is currently stinking up our screens. I’ve always had low expectations of Drake but they’re also making me dread any scene with Kristian Alfonso. The egg-yellow streaks in her hair and the ridiculous European/Madonna’s fake-British accent are becoming unbearable. If it weren’t for Will’s finally admitting who he is and the first glimpse of New-Celeste, I would not have watched today. Log in to Reply rayman1986 April 6, 2012 Will’s coming out has been great well done and not to drawn out or repetitive. However this is really the only thing worth watching. I hate the look of ne celeste, i havent watched thursday show yet but from what i seen on wednesday for the 30 seconds she was on tv she shouldnt have been hired.I would like to see Will and Sonny get more screen time but I honestly dont want them to get together because of their friendship. Im not sure about bringing someone new in for Will and Sonny( because they both should have a bf) but i would love to see one of them end up in bed with Chad, im sure it wont happen but i would love to see that.On a personal note Rafe needs to be killed off if anything good comes from him lying to the Dimarea’s it will be that they kill him and not kill him like a soap death where he comes back in 6 months but for good. Also im kinda sad to see Lexie leaving the show in a permanet way. Log in to Reply Leave a Reply Cancel Reply You must be logged in to post a comment.
