HomeTVDays of Our LivesWould a Potential Fifth Hour of Today Put Days of Our Lives in Jeopardy for Fall of 2014? Jamey Giddens April 9, 2012 Days of Our Lives, Talk Shows, The Today Show 23 Comments A little item from Matt Lauer's new $100 million deal to remain with NBC's Today could give fans of NBC's lone soap, Days of Our Lives, pause for concern. Lauer's new pact, which includes a development deal that would afford Lauer a stake in a syndicated show, could see the popular "Today's Professionals" segment being spun off as either a syndicated series or a fifth hour of Today, reports TV Guide. If the potential project does become slated for syndication, it wouldn't necessarily mean anything for DAYS. However, were it to be pitched as a fifth network hour of Today, the 45-year-old sudser's timeslot on the Peacock dial would likely be in jeopardy. DAYS has a contract with NBC that extends through 2013. Here's hoping the new writing team can get ratings up and fast! 23 Responses Restless Fan April 9, 2012 Good God! Isn’t the Today show on long enough? 4 hours is already excessive. Log in to Reply Restless Fan April 9, 2012 Good God! Isn’t the Today show on long enough? 4 hours is already excessive. Log in to Reply cheesehead91182 April 9, 2012 I think its time to face facts ALL the soaps days are numbered. GH proabably won’t make it to next year and Days will be gone in 2014 and I’m sue Y&R and B&B won’t be too far behind. The ratings have been declining for years and the networks now seem all to happy to cancel the soaps. Log in to Reply Marland Fan April 9, 2012 Yeah, I just don’t see Days surviving past 2013. In fact, I don’t think any soap will be on the air at the end of the decade. They’re just not worth the trouble anymore… the revolving door of writers, the carbon copy plots. And the soaps only have themselves to blame. Log in to Reply keanna April 9, 2012 Oh Lord please no, four hours of Today is MORE than enough!!! :~ :~ Log in to Reply hey mon April 9, 2012 As far as cancellation goes. Y&R and B&B are on the chopping block. If a half-million call fall off in one week, that should cause CBS to $hit a brick. 5 hours of TODAY – Isn’t it enough that we have to watch Kathie Lee Gifford and her Town-Drunk friend 2 hours a day already? Please, no more. For the sake of goodness, man, no more! Log in to Reply FoxCrane April 9, 2012 It’s my understanding that the fourth hour of Today is already optional for affiliates. Perhaps a fifth hour would be the same. Also, as suggested, it could be a syndicated show. Won’t they be looking for an hour of something to replace the already-canceled Nate Berkus? Log in to Reply SoapArmageddon April 9, 2012 I’ve been looking for a reason to quit watching Today after they had on that skank Kim Kardashian and that idiotic blowhard Sarah Palin. Bryant Gumbel is right to call them “embarrassing”. The Today show has been wallowing in the gutter since he and Jane Pauley left. So thank you NBC! All I ask is that they wrap up Days in a far better way than they did Another World and Santa Barbara. Log in to Reply alstonboy4315 April 9, 2012 This is ridiculous! I can barely stomach all the overpaid talking heads that the Today show employs now………….. Log in to Reply LizzieVee April 9, 2012 OMG!!! Enough already. Anything past the first hour is a waste of time. Absolutely ridiculous. I like Matt Lauer but won’t have anything to do with him if this ends up happening. Log in to Reply blake3b April 9, 2012 People really watch that much of Today show??? 5 hours??? And I hope Days’ ratings get higher, hope Lorraine’s writing gets on the show fast. I know they film 3 months ahead, but with news like this they need better ratings stat! And can I say I hate that the characters are still wearing winter clothing. I know it’s because they film months ahead but still. I was at the gym today and on one TV there is Days characters in jackets with trees that have the white lights on them, and on the TV next to it are the B&B characters in their swimsuits swimming in the pool! I know B&B is set in LA but come on! I’m on the east coast it’s very warm here all the time for a while now. Log in to Reply MsAgentProvocateur1 April 9, 2012 If this is true then NBC is really making some DESPERATE maneuvers! It has been reported in the NEW YORK TIMES today that Good Morning America has been catching up fast in the ratings, well EXCEPT for the Katie Couric week in which ratings went on a DOWNWARD SLIDE (revenge of the Daytime Soap Fans??). Hey, if there can be such a thing as too much of a good thing, I’m sure the same applies for the MEDIOCRE. If characters aren’t in their spring jackets, the wardrobe dept. isn’t paying attention. Log in to Reply pumpkin April 10, 2012 I don’t really know that much about the logistics of Days. I know they are changing the writers and going back to writers who were there before. Go figure. I don’t know why they changed when they were holding 3 when there were the other soaps. It surprised me. I remember at the time Daniel/Carly/Chloe/Melanie/Melanie’s husband/Melanie’s other love—were featured. Seemed they had higher ratings then. The next thing I know they are bringing back the actors/characters from the past. Interesting. I don’t know what they were thinking. It is like fixing something not broke. Then it was downward spiral. Log in to Reply blake3b April 10, 2012 [quote=Marland Fan][quote=blake3b] And can I say I hate that the characters are still wearing winter clothing. Did they assume the early spring would be freezing and not warm like it normally is? lol Log in to Reply Mets82 April 10, 2012 I dont watch Days of Our Lives but having 5 hrs. of Today is totally absurd. Its bad enough that Days might go off the air but they cant think of anything somewhat original except more of the Today show??!! And spare me all these executives that “love” soaps and “cant air them anymore because its too high in cost”. Pardon me while I throw up in my mouth a little bit. Dont you find it odd that All My Children, One Life to Live, As the World Turns and Guiding Light and maybe(?) Days have or are all going to be replaced? Thats a hell of a coincedence isnt it? Log in to Reply TV Gord April 10, 2012 Mets82, it’s no coincidence that all of the soaps are endangered at the same time. The audiences have been dwindling for decades now. They are expensive to make and they are less and less appealing to advertisers, who are not only advertising less on conventional TV, but they are demanding to pay less for the advertising they do buy. Meanwhile, The Today Show makes more money for NBC than any other show on the network, so while it doesn’t seem to make sense to a lot of viewers, it makes a great deal of sense to the decision-makers. And to those who ask who would watch five hours of Today, well, probably no one will watch all five hours, but another hour of “Today’s Professionals” might attract the viewers who enjoy Dr. Nancy Snyderman, Donny Deutsch, Star Jones and whoever else they get to join the show. Log in to Reply liason4real April 10, 2012 Jeez. Why not make the Today show 24 x 7 and call it a day? Log in to Reply 1titanman April 10, 2012 I hope Days make to 2014, but The 5th hour of Today would be sickening…If I were.an executive I would spun the professionals at 9am and let Matty Lauer have his own daytime talk show @ 2pm and Days and Lauer part of NBC DAYTIME…. Log in to Reply The_Moustache April 10, 2012 R.I.P. Days of Our Lives 2013 will be the last year. Log in to Reply RealityCheck 33 April 10, 2012 DOOL has been on life support for the past few years, but if anyone really takes a step back and looks at the overall situation, it’s fairly obvious that it’s only a matter of time until the show gets cancelled. I wish it weren’t true, but I think that is the conclusion of most people and NBC. Log in to Reply wasabi April 10, 2012 They can’t even fill 90 minutes of the Today Show with anything worth watching. We’ve started tuning into CBS at 7 A.M. for actual news instead of the fluff crap NBC is addicted to airing. I could see some boneheaded programmer thinking it would be a great idea to put Matt on against whatever slot Katie ends up with (and then maybe their ratings would end up with both facing cancellation). Log in to Reply wasabi April 10, 2012 It may be spring, but in Ohio this morning it’s in the 30s and we had some snow flurries, so not everyone is ready to pack away their winter gear. We had a wonderful week of summer-like weather last month, but till mid-April winter still has a grip here, so I’m not bothered by what they’re wearing.
