BREAKING NEWS: ABC CANCELS The Revolution, GMA Spin Off Takes Timeslot For Summer, General Hospital Safe?!

Is General Hospital safe? Deadline is reporting ABC Daytime made the smart decision to cancel low-rated One Life to Live replacement The Revolution. The talk show will last air in early July. A spin off of Good Morning America, tentatively titled GMA In The Afternoon, will take over the timeslot for summer, starting July 9 and run for nine weeks, according to the website.

While the Deadline article states that Vicki Dummer has decided to "stick with GH" and uses words like "renewal" to describe what has transpired with the 49-year-old sudser, GH is still lacking a definitive timeslot for fall 2012. Here's what the website's Nellie Andreeva wrote:

I hear ABC is not ready to lock in its daytime schedule for next season yet, it would make sense to keep The Chew at 1 PM and put GH at 2 PM as a lead-in for Katie on the ABC stations, the core station group that will carry Couric’s new syndicated talker.

Andreeva went on to report this latest development "ensures that GH, which marked 49 years on the air on April 1, will celebrate its 50th anniversary next April." I don't know about anyone else, but I'm gonna hold off buying the party hats until GMA In The Afternoon comes and mercifully goes away...

LORD HAVE MERCY. This is the best news yet. Bring it on GH. I didnt like the Revolution, but I feel so sorry for those poor people who relocated here to do this silly show. I hope life is good to them after ABC chewed them up and spit them out. Filthty Beasts!! We have overcome them.

This is tentatively good news for GH but I think you are right about waiting to celebrate. ABC could have another show in its back pocket that it might use if GMA in the Afternoon doesnt do well.

Ahhh it is so nice to see Breaking News Soap Renewed in the same sentence. I mean yes we don't know for sure if its saved and I don't trust ABC or this good morning america show but at least the Revolution was cancelled.

GMA in the Afternoon? That's the best title they could come up with? How about Good Afternoon America? At least we have GH until the fall. How I still miss AMC and especially OLTL though! I wonder what Vicki is doing today?

Im thinking that abc wanted GH out, but couldnt do it because of backlash from fans. Canceling could have put them over the edge and no-one would win. It would have been career death. Soap Fans are very un-forgiving. But at any rate, we still wont watch Katie.

I am with you guys this is great news, but let's not celebrate until we know for sure, GH gets to their 50th anniversary. Oh lord GMA in the Afternoon, great now they're trying to like the Today show. Doubt that will work!!!

But this is a great start!!

I think you're right, giogio, and it makes me think GH is only safe for another year to get it to the hyped up 50th anniversary of the show.

I believe the only reason they aren't announcing where GH will go is because they want to save it for their upfronts in May. It won't be a big deal in light of all the other upfront announcements, but it will be a line item in their announcement.

There are really only two options for ABC: they can take the expected route and put GH at 2pm eastern, or they can take the much more daring and risky move of moving GH into the current timeslot of The View and move The View to 2pm, where it would lead well into the ABC stations carrying Katie at 3pm. It would also put The View and The Talk in direct competition, which could be an interesting showdown.

This is great news, but my gut tells me this is the last time we'll see GH renewed, and fans had better get themselves prepared.

Im happy about this But This is what I think :
This Good morning America Addition has been given a 9 week trial run. If the ratings match The Chew & GH, I see Them moving GH to 2pm in September but only for a year and then Fall 2013 we will Good Afternoon America.

I seriously feel this is ABC saying GH will end Fall 2013

Thank Jesus. Good Morning Afternoon. This reminds me of when Today came out with Later Today in the late 90's with Mrs. Brady.

I know that The Chew's ratings have been on par, for the most part, with AMC's from a year ago. But a year ago AMC was still dealing with shit story. What ratings high did it hit when Lorraine came on board? It will be interesting to see the year over year ratings versus that time against The Chew.

ABC's "The Revolution" should have NEVER been televised!
But thank God it's over and done with, anything that happens that gives gh a longer lifespan is great news for us fans!

I knew The Revolution would tank. What about The Chew? When are they going to wise up and bring back the shows that EVERYBODY loved and now miss SO much. When? And I used to watch GH all the time, but there's something about one actor on that show that deeply disturbs me (Sonny). He's beyond scary. Scarier than anyone on The Sopranos and I don't think it's just that he's a good "actor"---maybe it's just me. I watch if they dropped him. Am I weird? Maybe. But if it weren't for SOAPNET, who are smart enough to air the reruns of AMC and OLTL, at least I can re-live the past.

I'm trying to watch GH, really, but it isn't much better than when I stopped watching it 3 or 4 years ago. Unless McBain gets to run around Port Chuck showing off Sonny's head on a stick, I doubt I'll watch much longer.

ABC is hell bent on having non-scripted shows in their daytime part. They had no choice to cancel the Revolution, it was abysmal. My feeling is "GMA in the afternoon" will stay even if it does as well as The Chew. Why wouldn't they just move GH? They are testing waters. If GMA does better than GH over the summer it will surely be extended to stay or until they develop another show to replace soap operas. By saying "9 weeks" they keep GH fans at bay. That's my feeling, hate to be negative, but I just don't trust ABC. I sure hope I'm wrong tho!

This is a reprieve for now. I think they are watching to see what this GMA afternoon show does. Don't let your guard down and don't give up fighting for our soaps. Still keep boycotting except for GH and let the episode website run on ABC for GH. Out of respect for the cast and crew of 2 iconic soaps AMC and OLTL I will boycott ABC day and night except for GH.

MissingtheoldGH- I hear you, but i would imagine that ABC numbers are down since the slaughter. Rather than think that we shouldnt trust them, they shouldnt trust us. We made their lives a living hell since the slaughter. I feel we have it over on them. I think they got the message that soap fans arent playing around. If they cancel GH now or next year, they will never get over this AMC and OLTL hump. It will go on forever and how worth it is to them?

ABC daytime realized what we already knew: cancel a successful show, replace it with something that is done on other networks much better, and it is doomed to fail.

It was utterly pointless to cancel OLTL.

Now that GH may have a reprieve, may TPTB on that show pay back the loyalty of the fans by killing this asinine Kate/Connie DID storyline.

Good for all of soap fans out there!! Im talking about the ones who have watched GH since 1963. This is your day because for once, the soaps triumphed over crappy reality tv.

The problem I have is that GMA afternoon or whatever there going to call it. I mean they should just bring back soap operas because how unoriginal can a show get? I mean more Good Morning America? 2 hrs. wasnt enough? I dont think thats really going to set the world on fire.

The Hollywood Reporter spins this as a renewal for GH, but it doesn't seem like it just yet. At least to me...

I'm truly heartened for the GH fans especially. Regardless of whether it is only another year or not, this brings some much needed good news for lovers of the daytime drama genre.

As an ATWT fan, it still irks me that The Talk seems to be holding steady in the ratings--I've never watched the show. The most I've done was watch one clip online. I guess the CBS maneuver was a different set of circumstances but it still smarts me that ATWT didn't get another chance.

Kudos to the GH fans for holding out for something better.

It will be interesting to see what the Chew's ratings (and this GMA afternoon show) will be during the summer.

Actually, Scout, every site I've read except this one is calling it a renewal (including Deadline.com, which is the website that EVERYONE is crediting with breaking the news). It's going to be around for another year, because they say it will celebrate the 50th anniversary next April. If that's not a renewal, I don't know what is.

Yes GH will air til Sept 2013 and we will know in April 2013 if its gonna live past that date
