HomeTVDays of Our LivesSOAP BYTES: Should Tom Hardy Jr. Return to General Hospital to Romance Starr? How Pissed Can Stefano Get on Days of Our Lives? Luke Kerr April 12, 2012 Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, The Bold and the Beautiful, The Young and The Restless 33 Comments GH BYTES: Since Michael (Chad Duell) is so bland with Starr (Kristen Alderson), who else could enter the picture to create a steamier triangle? The topic has been plaguing me so much I’ve started thinking about it any time I see Michael with Starr. Matt would seem like a possible choice. He’s in the same age range, but does he have what’s needed to give the triangle some spark? . Spinelli (Bradford Anderson) comes to mind, but I’m not sure a grieving mother could handle his spastic behavior. As I mentioned in another SOAP BYTES, I think Johnny (Brandon Barash) would add some sizzle to the story. However, it may not be a good idea to mess with Johnny and Carly's (Laura Wright) chemistry. What about off screen characters, such as a recast Dillon Quartermaine? What about a drastically SORASED Spencer Cassadine? I’ve been discussing the topic with my Daytime Confidential podcast co-host Regan Cellura. She suggested Dr. Tom Hardy (Matt Ashford) and Dr. Simone Ravelle Hardy’s (Felecia M. Bell) son Tommy Hardy. He’d be about 23 without SORASing. Matt Ashford is no longer at Days of Our Lives and Tom Hardy was once involved with the returning Felicia (Kristina Wagner). It could work on multiple levels. Just don’t cast Barret Helms in the role. He didn't work on One Life to Live and there is no reason to believe he'd work with Alderson on GH. Poor Kate (Kelly Sullivan), she can’t even spend a night with Sonny without Connie popping up. The DID storyline has provided Sullivan a great opportunity for showcasing her acting chops.I can’t wait to see what happens if Kate is committed against her will. Steven Webber (Scott Reeves) is an interesting character in scenes with Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst), Olivia (Lisa LoCicero) or Heather (Robin Mattson). Opposite anyone else and he’s a bit of a drag lately. Elizabeth: ”Thanks again for lunch.” Ewen (Nathin Butler): “No worries, I still owe you that dessert.” Elizabeth: ”Just let me know when.” Ewen: “Sure you won’t mind dating a murderer?” Ewen: “Sorry that didn’t come out right.” Elizabeth: “I certainly hope not.” Was that a Freudian slip on Ewen's part? Ewen goes on to explain Matt (Jason Cook) and Spinelli's (Bradford Anderson) conspiracy theory. However, I still can’t help wondering if Ewen mentioning being a murderer might have greater meaning. Sonny (Maurice Benard) and John (Michael Easton) have untapped scene partner chemistry. It sort of reminds me of how much more interesting John was when he was sharing scenes with David Vickers (Tuc Watkins). John mentioned my beloved Natalie (Melissa Archer)! If John is going to be a viable love interest for Sam (Kelly Monaco), he needs to break up with Natalie, preferrably onscreen! As Jamey Giddens mentioned on our recent podcast, there needs to be a scene where Natalie slaps the hell out of Sam. John can’t leave Natalie for another woman without someone getting hit. It just wouldn’t be right. John to Sam: “What happens if the baby is Franco’s?” That is a very good question. 33 Responses EastWest April 12, 2012 This might be unpopular, buts Kristen Alderson has been god awful on this show. It goes back to a discussion I had on Goldderby about how these two shows had distinct and different styles and tone. So her doing nothing but shrieking and given JER style dialogue while she is on the phone w/Blair has made all of her scenes jarring and FF worthy. If they had to haver her on the show, she could’ve been a Serena Baldwin recast (or get the girl who played her back if they could). W/the rumors of a aged or Lexi Kristina coming back, this is the perfect opportunity to end that madness, but they won’t. So to answer Luke’s question, the problem is not only the pairing, but the actress involved. Log in to Reply soapbaby April 12, 2012 Hey Luke, Regarding GH, I think Tom Hardy and Tom Hardy, Jr. should return to Port Charles. I’d love to see a new actress cast as Simone. How about Dominique Jennings? She played Virginia on Sunset Beach. She’d be on my “wishful casting” list! Starr should exit Port Chuck ASAP. No love interest will work because SHE doesn’t work. She adds no value but takes up a lot of space! Ewen could go to. The actor is not very good. Matt and Spinelli are no fun or funny. Robin Mattson looks FABULOUS. Y&R is still painfully boring. I agree that Neil and Yo!Harmony have no chemistry. Harmony is a fail of a character and the writers have not been invested in Neil in years. Drucilla is SO missed! Dru drove all of Neil’s stories and without her, he (and the rest of The Winters Clan) is beyond bland. Yo!Harmony needs a character re-invention. I’d suspend belief long enough to buy her being made-over into a viable businesswoman. She has more chemistry with Tucker. A Yo!Harmony/Tucker/Ashley triangle could be fun. Log in to Reply AWfanforever April 12, 2012 I agree and I tweeted Frank Valentini that today. Kristen Alderson is beyond horrible and she really sticks out like a sore thumb on this show. She needs to go. Log in to Reply soapjunkie88 April 12, 2012 Oh I wouldn’t waste another male on that awful girl named Starr Manning. She’s beyond terrible. How did she stay that long on a soap??? With her the definition of a hair model doesn’t even work. Just send her packing and then back to Llanview. -.- The only good thing Starr did for me, I enjoy the character of Michael again. At least I don’t find him that horrible anymore with his new scene partner around. Log in to Reply TicToc238 April 12, 2012 Why is everyone hating on Starr??? I do not think she is a bad actress she’s not oscar material but she is not horrible. Now I know why i don’t comment a lot on this site, too much negativity sometimes.. lol Log in to Reply MsAgentProvocateur1 April 12, 2012 Haven’t watched Y&R in forever but the trajectory of this show continues to confound me. Someone made a good point about the Neil character. Kristoff St. John is quite talented so I don’t understand why they can’t write more compelling, lively storylines. I watched some clips of him…everything from the Bad News Bears TV show, to Charlie & Company to The Cosby Show and he was so funny, even when he was being shallow or chauvinistic. Why can’t they give Neil the occasional sense of humor? Constantly conscripting a character to being the ‘heavy’ is very boring…just ask Paul Williams. I haven’t watched so I don’t know what the chemistry is like between his character and that of Debbie Morgan’s but if it’s not firing on all cylinders then it’s got to be the writing. Kristoff used to have chemistry with all his female co-stars until this millennium, with decent writing…hell, you could put him w/ Nina (they had chemistry on the Bad News Bears, didn’t they?) and it would work. Until the writing gets back on par, this show is going to be unwatchable to me. Log in to Reply Duchess April 12, 2012 Finally Y&R got something right by having Billy and Victoria name the baby John. History has been rewritten so much lately that it was nice to see a nod to history by doing something that actually made sense. That chapel scene had me teary and reminded me how good it is to have Billy back plus it showed again just how great Villy are together. They’re the one constant in a sea of newbies and constant partner swapping. Log in to Reply soapjunkie88 April 12, 2012
Why is everyone hating on Starr???
Because my ears hurt every time she screams into the camera. I think with the accepting of the character of Starr, GH has been good lately. I’m not trying to be negative here, but I don’t understand what people should like about the character or why I should call that what she’s doing acting. I won’t apologize for that. I want this show to do great. But I don’t think that any romantic pairing with Starr Manning would be the way to succeed at this. Log in to Reply liason4real April 12, 2012 Starr/KA just needs to tone down the screaming and she’ll be just fine. The actress grew up on OLTL and it must be a jolt to her just as it is to fans seeing her on another soap opera. Any one that has ever switched jobs after working at the same place for a decade plus knows it takes time to find your footing and get back into some type of rhythm or routine. As for Michael, the character is so droopy that I want to give him a cup of coffee! I think the previous Michael was a better fit for the show. I just hope that Starr doesn’t start singing on the show, because then I will retract all of my previous comments! :Sp Log in to Reply aleana25 April 12, 2012 LUKE KERR YOU RIGHT ABOUT NEIL AND HARMONY DON’T FEEL NO CHEMISTRY BETWEEN THEM EVEN THOUGH I LIKE ACTRESS WHO PLAY CHELSEA IF THEY WANTED TO SHAKE UP BILLY AND VICTORIA THEY HAD MOTHER OF BILLY DAUGHTER CHLOE TO SHAKE THINGS UP EVEN THOUGH LOVE HER AND KEVIN TOGETHER OR THEY COULD HAVE BROUGHT JT AND MACKENZIE BACK TO CAUSE TROUBLE FOR THEM AND I HAVE TWO GREAT ACTORS AND ACTRESSES THAT COULD PLAY THEM IF THAD LUCKINBILL DIDN’T WNAT TO COME BACK JOSH KELLY AS JT OR JOHN PAUL LAVOISIER AS MACKENZIE FARAH FATH OR CHRISHELL STAUSE EVEN THE ACTRESS PLAYING CHELSEA COULD HAVE PLAYED MACKENZIE EVEN THOUGH I DONT SEE CHEMISTRY WITH STARR AND MICHAEL SHE MADE ME LIKE HIM AGAIN THEY DO NEED A THIRD PERSON FOR THEM I THINK THEY SHOULD AGED SERENA BALDWIN BRING HER ON AND BRING DILLION QUATERMAINE ON BRING THE ACTOR WHO PLAYED JAMES ON OLTL CAN’T THINK OF HIS NAME AS DILLION AND KELLY MISSAL AS SERENA I HAVE STORYLINE FOR BB IF YOU GET A CHANCE TO READ MY COMMENTS OKAY I LIKE THE HOPE/LIAM/STEFFY TRIANGLE BUT TO ME IT’LL BE COOL IF THEY BRING ON AMBER SON LITTLE D AGED HIM THE RIGHT AGED BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW HE OLDER THEN HIS SISTER AND HOPE AND HAVE HIM FALL FOR STEFFY HAVE LIAM BE CRAZY JEALOUS BECAUSE I’M KIND GETTING TIRED OF STEFFY BEING ODD MAN OUT SORT SPEAK SHE RICH AND BEAUTIFUL SHE SHOULD HAVE SOMEONE CHASING HER FOR CHANGE AND IT BE GREAT TO SEE AMBER DO SOMETHING ELSE BESIDE CHASING RICK WHAT DO YOU THINK ON DAYS I HOPE THIS JOHN AND HOPE STORYLINE IS OVER TO ME THEY SHOULD FIRE RAFE HIS SISTER GABI AND THEY SHOULD FOCUS MORE ON SAMI LUCAS AND EJ NICOLE QUADRANGLE I’M LOVING THE WILL COMING OUT STORYLINE THE BEST STORYLINE SINCE BIANCA COMING OUT ON AMC TO ME HERE STORYLINE FOR HOPE AND BO AGED CIARA TO A TEENAGER BRING BACK THE CHILD THEY GIVEN BACK TO HIS BIRTH PARENTS LET HIM COME TO TOWN TO SEEK REVENGE ON BO AND HOPE BY SEDUCE CIARA BECAUSE HE ANGRY THAT THEY GAVE HIM AWAY AND HIS BIRTH PARENTS WASN’T GOOD PARENTS AND AGED THEO AND BRING HIM INTO THE MIX BRING BACK BELLE AND SHAWN AND HAVE THEM HAVE MARRIAGE PROBLEMS LIKE SHAWN IS SICK BECAUSE HE HAS TUMOR AND HE WONDER AROUND BEING DIFFERENT BECAUSE REMEMBER WHEN HE GOT INTO THE MORTORCYLE ACCIENDT HE LOSS HIS MEMORY WAS A DIFFERENT PERSON THIS COULD BE A GREAT STORYLINE FOR BO AND HOPE AND I WOULD LOVE HAVE EDEN RIEGEL AS BELLE AND BRANDON BEEMER BACK AS SHAWN BRING CHLOE AND PHILLIP BACK BECAUSE THEY WERE MY FAVORITE TEEN COUPLE INTO ADULTS WE NEVER REALLY GOT SEE THEM BE A COUPLE AS ADULTS NEVER LIKE CHLOE AND BRADY I WAS PISS WHEN THEY BROKE PHILLIP AND CHLOE AND PAIR HER WITH BRADY I WISH THEY WOULD HAVE KEPT SARAH BROWN LIKE HER WITH BRADY PISS THEY FIRE MATT ASFORD LOVE HIM AS JACK THEY SHOULD FIRE RAFE GABI THEN SARAH BROWN AND MATT ASFORD RAFE AND GABI NOT TIED TO THE TOWN SO GET RID OF THEM AND KEEP MADISON AND JACK Log in to Reply soapbaby April 12, 2012 @soapjunkie: Starr Manning has been an awful character since 2007 when she was frontburnered in a miserable “Romeo & Juliet” redux and then saddled as teenaged mother. Kristen Alderson already played Starr mourning the death of her child and she could not carry the story then and she still cannot carry the similar story now. Kristen Alderson resorts to screaming or gritting her teeth or doing both at the same time (in a miraculous feat!) The character is best as a supporting character to the more interesting characters, Todd and Blair. Log in to Reply pumpkin April 13, 2012 I just tend to lose interest in posts that are too long. Short, sweet and to the point grab my interest more. I agree with the comments about Starr to a point. I wonder if they should speed up this current story with her since they were renewed. Of course, coming from oltl and watching GH sporadicaly, I wouldn’t be disappointed if they backburnered Sonny/Jason and Carly. Right now though seems they are still involved in everything. I do like the Kate story. Why not wind up the current story she is in with the dead child/boyfriend, solve mystery and move on. I am not crazy about the Michael/Starr combo though. I would be open to a Hardy Jr recast. Sounds interesting. I just think Starr needs different material. Maybe if this material was on oltl it would come over better but not on GH. Cut losses and move on. I did like Starr on oltl. Log in to Reply liason4real April 13, 2012 Starr/KA worked very well with the OLTL vets, and part of that is because of her longevity on the show. I get why Starr was pushed forward back in 2007, since she was a teenager and we all know that soaps want the younger demographic. Log in to Reply maxsmom April 13, 2012 I disagree with all the criticism heaped on KA. I thought she had been overworked since the pregnancy with Hope but I think the break between shows and the fact that she is just one part of a bigger story has given her the rest she needed. I havent liked Michael in any of his 3 forms: Dylan Cash, Drew Garrett, or Chad Duell. Michael has for years been written as the kind of bratty kid I cannot stand regardless of the actor. That said, I like both actors together right now and hope that it is not a given that they will be a couple. Both are currently grieving and it is not a good way to begin a long term relationship, a friendship sure but no more, no less. Log in to Reply The_Moustache April 13, 2012 the only character Matt Ashford should play on General Hospital is his One Life to Live character of serial killer, Dr. Stephen Haver! Log in to Reply soapjunkie88 April 13, 2012
the only character Matt Ashford should play on General Hospital is his One Life to Live character of serial killer, Dr. Stephen Haver!
With all due respect but sometimes I ask myself if I should take your posts seriously. Anyway to make an serious argument out of this, I would just like to say that “GH” has enough crazies running around town at the moment. The last thing this soap opera needs is to add a serial killer to it’s canvas. Log in to Reply EastWest April 13, 2012 @soapbaby not to put words into your mouth, but I think we are on the same page. Once they made Starr a heroine w/Kristen in the part, it was done for the character. Of course ay new shade or demision in a character is always welcome and something many of us cheer for. But when you have an actress who could not clearly make that transition, it’s a problem esp w/a legacy character. As a child she played scheming really well and hind sight being 20/20 previous writers should’ve kept to writing for the actors strength, but of course in that time it was the Dena Higly era. And I am sure w/her alleged one story idea, like many of those I am not gonna lie, it looked good on paper but didn’t translate onscreen. But I am of course in the select few w/this opinion b/c the majority loved her as the heroine b/c she had two wildly popular pairings, so what do I know. Log in to Reply soapbaby April 13, 2012 ^^ It seems we are on the same page EastWest! Who didn’t love Starr Manning as kid? We all did. Many times I have rooted for her when she faced pre-teen, teenaged angst but she was accelerated past pivotal years of growth and into stories for a woman twice her age. I would have preferred Starr being eased into adulthood. Perhaps, she could have decided on a career path and attended college. She could have done teen stories but nope, she was written “too old.” Plus, the actress was placed into these stories without the actress’ acting catching up so to speak. Eddie Alderson was never frontburnered as Matthew Buchanan, rather, he was supporting at best and then backburnered. He is a much stronger actor, perhaps, because of the time to develop offscreen, I don’t know. I do know Kristen Alderson doesn’t have the chops and is difficult to watch. Also, I am not sure if Starr Manning was in “two wildly popular pairings.” I am not even sure what constitutes a wildly popular pair as soaps have so few couples. OLTL had virtually no couples when Starr was paired up, so not much to choose from. Not like the 80’s or early 90’s when soaps were full of actual couples! Otherwise, I have no praise for her. She is godawful. Log in to Reply Angie Lucy April 13, 2012 Of course Tommy Hardy should come back (and they ought to call him TJ since “Tommy” at 23 isn’t cool and “Tom” won’t work for obvious reasons, but of course they had that stereotype TJ this year so never mind). But he should come back because he’s a Hardy and because the show needs diversity, not because of Starr Manning. Tommy could have been for Kristina if they didn’t SORAS him, and Maxie if they did. I’d love to have Simone Hardy back as well. Tom, not so much. I never liked his character, but particularly not with Matt Ashford (who I loved as Jack) in the role. MA’s Tom was kind of a deadbeat, and he didn’t click with Felicia. Log in to Reply Cordelia Chase April 13, 2012 Well, I love Kristen Alderson. I think she’s a very realistic actress and is age appropriate. I think the problem is that people who didn’t watch OLTL find her jarring on GH because they don’t understand her history or how she’s used to interacting with people. You can’t be the child of Todd Manning and Blair Cramer and not scream a whole heck of a lot. How old is Starr supposed to be, anyway? Eighteen, nineteen? She’s already had to mourn her child once. When you think about everything she’s been through, I’m surprised she’s not screaming all the time. I hope the writers do the smart thing and take Starr back to her roots. Look at her parents. Let her be bad again, or at least scheming and wily. They reinvented the character on OLTL to make her more like Viki, which is fine, as I love Viki, but Viki is also a badass and never let anyone walk all over her. You can be a heroine and still be strong. Starr was a constant martyr on OLTL and it was painful to watch. Not because of KA’s acting, which I find more than adequate, but because of the many truly awful things that happened to her over a period of just a few years. Log in to Reply PatriniaJ April 14, 2012 I am loving Starr and Michael myself. Of course I have ALWAYS loved Starr and to me she can do no wrong…..LOL. I just think Michael is being careful with her because she just lost her reasons for life. There is not supposed to be any chemistry yert (even though I already am seeing “some”). I think once Starr is “ready” to move on, this could be a really GREAT storyline. Log in to Reply ConqueringBlue April 14, 2012 Or better yet, just get rid of Starr. She’s terrible. Bring back Kristina. LA was marvelous, and Alexis would be on screen more, so…. win win. Log in to Reply SwanQueen59 April 14, 2012 With KA I think it’s about who’s coaching her and the choices she’s making with the material she’s being given. I’ve seen little “flashes” of what she could be within the GH canvas and as an actress in general. But so far she’s swung back and forth between very loud and monotone delivery. Not a lot of range and modulation at this point that she’s shown. Her initial scenes following the accident were some of her best work since she’s arrived. I also admit, fair or not, I compare her to LA who I thought was very gifted and who really grew over the storylines that were given to her. The Kieffer abuse? Now that was intense… 0:) Log in to Reply esther April 16, 2012 They need to give Michael a purpose and then maybe he’ll click with someone. I haven’t seen enough of Starr to criticize her but Michael’s character just feels sorry for people all the time and comes off as dumb sometimes. They need to give him a talent or an interest other than feeling bad for chicks. Log in to Reply alstonboy4315 April 16, 2012 Starr needs to go! Kristen A’s anemic acting and Starr’s whining and constant histrionics make me want to drink……….and I don’t even really like alcohol! She seems to be delivering lackluster performances and I don’t even sympathize or empathize with Starr, despite the fact that she lost her child. And that’s sad because I was one of the people who was so pissed off back when KA was denied her Emmy nomination for the material surrounding Starr first believing that Hope had died that I actually wrote LETTERS to Soap Opera Digest and Soap Opera Weekly, relaying my disgust. Hell, I didn’t even do that when Victoria Rowell was UNFAIRLY robbed of an Emmy nod for her work surrounding Drucilla coming undone and losing her grip with reality during the Carmen Mesta storyline. But it seems that Kristen can’t handle such a “grown woman” storyline. Her anger and sadness seem hollow and she’s not selling me on her grief. Bring Cole and Hope back from the dead and ship her back to Llanview, where she belongs to live happily ever after!! Frankly, I don’t know why Ron C. went so far as to KILL OFF both of these characters just to ignite some Todd/Sonny feud that hasn’t even taken off yet, nor does it seem to be on the verge of taking off. And seeing Starr in scenes with acting heavyweights like Bruce Weitz just further reinforce the fact that Kristen is not ready for the “big leagues.” Kristen might be cheap, but just because it’s cheaper, that doesn’t mean that it’s always better! Just saying!! Log in to Reply soapbaby April 17, 2012 ^^ As always, Alstonboy said it all.
