Eileen Davidson on Y&R Firing: “Not Really Sure Exactly Why, But In The Big Picture I Guess It Doesn’t Really Matter!”

Ousted soap star Eileen Davidson (Ashley) has spoken out on Twitter regarding her termination from The Young and the Restless. Like fans, Davidson revealed her confusion as to why she was fired from the sudser. The actress tweeted:

Davidson is gone but, Yvonne Zima (Daisy) still has a buffet's worth of screentime. Tell me something isn't wrong with this picture.

It’s beyond me what TPTB think they are doing there. What’s the point anymore in watching this show? If I catch an episode of Y&R I see Victor kissing Sharon or Daniel sleeping with Daisy. Who thinks that this airing storylines interest any viewer???

And now they fire Eileen Davidson!?!?!? Why??? If the have budget problems get rid of names like Debbi Morgan or Genie Francis, but don’t fire a veteran like Eileen Davidson, who’s character has been a part of this show for 30 (!!!) years now.

MAB needs to stop playing favors. I don’t need to see Phyllis tell every single Genoa City resident that she is getting remarried with Nick and that she’s pregnant with his child. Print it in Restless Style already!!!!
And then there is Daisy, who I believe is designed to become the Phyllis of the 90s, with Daniel taking the role of his adoptive father.

I’m getting sick and tiered to even try anymore.

    Maria is disgusting! Absolutely disgusting!

She should have gotten rid of Sharon “My Character Is Ruined Beyond Comprehension!” Case, Julie Paceless Mitchell and Yvonne “Children of the Corn” Zimaless. And soooo many other characters, like Eden, Lily and Cane, need to be shown the door as well……or at least have their contracts yanked and start receiving the 1st and 15th treatment.

I do NOT recommend getting rid of Debbi Morgan or Genie Francis because both characters are growing on me and they are both tremendous actresses, but they show Genevieve 14 days a week, which is far too much. So put Miss “Genaura” on the backburner.

With Ashley/Eileen leaving, I see no reason for them to keep Abby or Tucker on the canvas. Abby is like nails on a chalkboard, no offense to Marcy Rylan, who is only playing what she’s given. But get rid of that Naked Heiress. Paris Hilton is out of style now, so therefore so is the “naked heiress.” Hell, sex tapes are even out of style. Such a tired and dated cliche!

Stephen Nichols needs to find his way back to Salem! The only reason I could find to justify keeping him around is if they decide to deepen his relationship with Katherine, but Maria’s ass seems to have forgotten that he’s Katherine’s SON, and has given them VERY few scenes together!

Kevin can also go! He went from being an interesting character with layers and edge to a David Gest wannabe who seems to be in a platonic marriage with his “best friend.” What the freak is that about? Chloe and Kevin are like Will and Grace. They should be French-braiding each others’ hair, not married! Seriously, they make no sense. Greg Rikaart is a good actor, but not needed on the show right now. Yank his contract and put him on once a month.

This show is getting better in many ways, but when crap like this happens, it makes me question why I even give a damn at all.

Eileen, we love you, and we always will. You have graced Y&R for almost 20 years as Ashley. Brenda Doumani did a great job too. Won’t talk about Shari Shat-yuck.

Alstonboy, too true about Kevin. I think he was checking out Carmine too with his Momma.

Really sad when they let Eileen Davidson/Ashley go and keep some of the terrible actors that they have brought in. They just keep bringing in these people that can’t seem to get a job anywhere else, can’t act and have nothing to do with the core characters that have been with the show forever. How sad what has happened to Bill Bell’s once wonderful show and what a shame that the PTB can’t seem to understand that they are losing their audiences with this bunch of rejects.

I only see the show losing more veterans like this. Either they are thrown out or they are “let go”. MAB has far too much fun at burning the character of Sharon to the ground. Only question is how long Sharon Case is going to keep up with this. I don’t know when her contract is up, but she’s clearly unhappy and doesn’t seem to have any fun left in playing this character. Specially now that she has to kiss Eric Braeden. She looks so uncomfortable and I don’t blame her one bit. Not because of Eric, but because of the history that her character has on the show.

Eric Braeden’s contract is coming up soon and somehow I could see him walking away from the show once and for all. I don’t believe for one second that he’s happy with the current storyline or that he was they one who suggested this sick love story between Victor and Sharon like Nelson Branco said.

And then there is Jess Walton, who I don’t see returning after six months just yet. If MAB plays it “right”, Walton will go without us even noticing for a while.

If Stephen Nichols would leave Y&R I’d rather see him back as Stefan Cassadine on GH. I loved him back then. DAYS is just blah these days and finally needs to find themselves before they bring old faves back and don’t know what to do with them.

I recommended Morgan and Francis because Sony is playing for there names and I don’t think that their characters have any importance to show. And if it comes to the show’s budget and you rather let someone like Eileen Davidson go, I don’t have any understanding for it.

And sorry but I don’t think that this show is getting better at all. -.-
All I see are storylines who are completely plot-driven, disgusting or repeats of something that was already very similar told. This show has it’s little moments, but I don’t watch an hour of soap five days a week to find only five minutes of that week entertaining.

@CoffeeJunkie Sony handles the contract negotiations, but Sony goes into these negotiations looking at the casting budget. Since MAB has brought on Debbi Morgan, Darnell Williams, Melissa Claire Egan, etc. (None of whom make newbie pay), the soap’s casting budget is sitting up on bloat. Therefore, when it’s time to renegotiate contracts, the Sony suits demand cuts across board, which is insane. I loved Debbi, Darnell and Missy Claire in Pine Valley, but I’ll be damned if I want to see them costing me an Abbott, and that’s what happens.

That’s why we call it “End of Show Moves” As The World Turns did the same thing. They lost Martha Byrne, trying to drastically cut her pay, then proceeded to bring on several former General Hospital and Port Charles actors.

Yea, I dont think its right if people from cancelled soaps take over veteran characters on older soaps. its unconstitutional. I love all of the above AMC soapers, but its just not right if this is what we are going to be seeing on Y&R. I think I should start thinking about giving up soaps.

    Roses are Red
    Violets are Blue
    Maria Arena Bell
    Aint got herself a clue

    We all used to love
    our Gang in Genoa City
    But now it’s turned horrible
    It’s all such a pity…

    When “Nadia’s Theme” started,
    my heart used to race
Now the revolving door of “Celebrities”
has me thinking I’m watching “Will and Grace”

    Our beloved Jack Abbott
sits and gets yelled at by Sarge
The Abbott Family has all but dwindled, by and Large

    When Cassie Newman passed,
we lost all hope for Sharon too..
It became MAB’s mission to see
how many guys this character can screw.

Lily and Cane, oh, what a mess
And now we have Harmony and Tucker
    suddenly having sex??!

We want Jess Walton on Daily!
    And more Catherine too!
And certainly do NOT want to see
Sharon and her ex’s father-in-law screw!

This show used to be hot, from beginning to end…
When can we hope, things will start to mend??
But Miss Crazy Maria thinks the way to quiet our ire
Is to hire the lead from “Grace under Fire”????

Stop the insanity, cuz I have just about had it!
The final straw is the firing of Ashley Abbott!

I hope, like with the dull aussie who plays Cane, that a massive letter writing or whatever gets the powers that be to rethink what they are doing with firing Eileen Davidson. Think about it, she is one of the only characters on this show… and ACTRESSES… that has a history worth looking into at length and continually mining for great story. This actress delivers CONSTANTLY.

Now, at the end of yesterday’s episode we see Genevieve talking to Colin who thanks her for getting him out of prison. OK, why is it that when these people get out no one hears about it?!!! Plus, firing Eileen Davidson to bring back Colin is NUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cane’s family is being built up and it will not be long before Cane’s dead sister shows up alive. Mark my words.

Daisy slept with Daniel and UNLESS there is a major plot twist that Daniel met with Danny and Danny informed him how his mother, Phyllis, used to work the system and her victims and that Daniel is taking a page from her book. Let’s hope Daniel’s actions are more devious and less “well, she may be NUTS and DULL out of bed BUT SHE’S A WILD CHILD IN BED” scenario.

Kyle is a creep and the OVER acting on the actor’s part is weird. The story here shouldn’t be him bedding Eden and possibly having a relationship with her it should be his trying to work through his issues with his father. They have written Kyle as a selfish bore and not the nice kid that his bitchy to everyone else but him mother raised. (Seriously, Hope raised Adam and he is a selfish manipulating loser …but love LOVE him with Chelsea. Kyle was raised by Diane and EVERYONE and their mother praised Diane for how well he turned out ONLY TO TURN OUT TO BE SELFISH. His father is paralyzed from a pyscho and could have been killed and MARIA BELL writes Kyle as being indifferent to the fact that he almost lost another parent WHILE forgetting about all the bad deeds the NEWMAN clan did to his mother from Nikki killing her, Victor abusing her and ruining her financially, Nick whoring around with her and publicly humiliating her and THREATENING TO KILL HER, and Victoria just being the spoiled brat and threatening the same.

The writing is not balanced on this show and the audience sees that BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN WATCHING THE SHOW FOR YEARS. Now, we see characters we could care less about getting airtime and stories we want to see being forgotten (Jack teaming with Paul to exact revenge on Victor and Adam for Patti or even the business rivalry of Jack and Victor) and then the firing of actors WHO CAN ACT and excite the audience when they are shown on tv.

Good for ED for no longer having to breathe life into MAB’s craptastic stories. If Sony cannot see what MAB is doing to this show, then fine — let it be canceled; better than watching it die this horrible, horrible death.

Certainly someone at CBS and/or Sony read this site, so here goes:

GET RID OF MARIA BELL. She’s destroying Y&R, your former cash cow.

Stop with the horrible s/l’s with Victor & Sharon and Daisy & Daniel. They are offensive to watch. You’re losing viewers!

Get rid of Hogan Sheffer and Scott Hamner, they’ve wrecked so many soaps and they’re doing the same to Y&R.

    STOP THE MADNESS!

I don’t get this one. She has ties to the entire canvas in some shape or form. I won’t pretend she’s my favorite or anything, but she’s an extremely useful character. MAB rarely makes sense to me with her casting choices. There’s alot of dead weight floating around this cast that could be let go of character & all or atleast was horribly miscast. I’d even go as far to say that there’s other vets who’s characters are much more worn out than ED’s Ashley. It makes Tucker even more pointless to have around, so he might as well be out the door too. Yes yes, I realize he’s Katherine’s son, but that’s the only important connection he has imo. The rest are extremely fickle. Hmm, Tucker possibly going away too might be the only plus of Ashley leaving lol.

Since the VIctor Sharon disgusting plot line I have been thinking about turning off Y&R. I have sadly adjusted to life with out AMC and OLTL………what’s one more soap to clear the day? I agree with the majority of the posters…..there are so many others they could get rid of……why Ashleigh? She is a woman with a lot more going for her than Sharon or Daisy. It is time to protest folks and turn off the tube!!!!!!

But how do you know what their rate of pay is? Just because they were “hot stuff” and Emmy winners from another soap doesn’t mean they cost top dollar. Their shows were cancelled and the actors needed the work more than Y&R needed them. I suspect Y&R is getting them for dirt cheap in comparison to the salaries they were pulling down say a decade ago.

I’m by no means siding with TPTB. I’m just trying to play devil’s advocate. I think when they sat down with ED for her contract negotiations (most likely last week or earlier this week whatever they proposed she balked. (who can blame her with all the “newbies” climbing on board).

I think this also puts a whole new spin on Jess Walton’s six month leave of absence. I’m willing to bet the farm she did NOT approach them. They most likely *invited* her to take the leave of absence to lower her episode count for the year and since they timing was right for her she agreed.

From what I heard, Eileen already took a huge pay cut to return to the show a few years back. Sony TV is definitely doing this across the board, Peter Reckell at DAYS, Melody Scott a while back at Y&R, and while I get the need to trim the budget (I used to defend shows for demanding pay cuts), it makes no sense to demand draconian, across the board pay cuts for your own soap’s popular veteran performers, then allowing your amateurish executive producer/head writer to go on a casting jig for ABC soap cast offs.

Debbi, Darnell, Missy Claire and Genie Francis may definitely be making less than they made at their peak on other shows, but I do know, for a fact, they don’t make newbie pay. I also know that the majority of soap fans would rather see their vets, if it came down to having to choose between a new character played by a familiar face from another soap. I’m not saying all new characters played by vets from other soaps are bad. If I felt that way, I wouldn’t have loved Stefan Cassadine on GH, after loving Patch on DAYS. But Stefan was made viable from start. Out of Tucker, Genevieve, Harmony, Sarge et al, which one has truly been made integral to this soap?

Some people have asked me what’s the difference between what MAB is doing at Y&R to the OLTL characters on GH, and I will tell you the difference. No GH veteran has lost a job because the show is saying they have to pay for Starr. In fact, GH has brought back Finola Hughes, Robin Mattson and Kristina Malandro. If GH suddenly couldn’t afford Luke or Tracy, while bringing on OLTL characters, I would be just as pissed as I am about what is happening at Y&R.

Just look at the Y&R canvas? It’s the final few season of Santa Barbara all over again, where the soap’s core characters are starting to become endangered species. Ironically, I was pissed back then that Eileen was on that show, along with Kim Zimmer, Thaao Penghlis and countless others who didn’t belong.

Soaps do this everytime they’re heading for their final lap. Instead of trying to refocus on what once made fans love their soap, they go on a mad casting spree of big names from other soaps, while forcing out their own vets. It didn’t work for Santa Barbara. It didn’t work for As The World Turns. It won’t work for The Young and the Restless.

This is just a repeat of what P&G did with GL and ATWT. Ruin the shows so that they are completely unwatchable, and then the blame lies on the ratings when the shows are cancelled instead of poor management decisions. Sony clearly wants out of the soap business, too. Y&R will continue to go down this dreadful path until it’s cancelled, and Sony will do the same to DOOL, while ABC maneuvers to rid itself of GH within the next year or two.

Can it be possible the last remaining soap will be B&B, before it too vanishes? A sad end to a once proud legacy of daytime drama.

My only hope is that one day, someone will for soaps what Ken Burns did for baseball, jazz, and the Civil War, and do a long-form documentary on the history of our cherished soaps, and tell the FULL story, including how people worked from the inside to destroy an art form.

jetty, that would be an AWESOME idea! I know I’d watch.

The Daytime Drama has an extensive history and does indeed merit a serious look at its legacy. And it deserves multi-part installments the way the Civil War, Baseball, Jazz and Prohibition were done. From its origins in Radio to Television and Beyond. To take a look at the innovators, the writers who achieved incredible success and look at some of the factors that have led the Daytime Dramatic form to the state it is today. The vintage clips alone would be wonderful to see. I’d love to take a look at some of the factors that led the Soap to be regarded as a guilty pleasure, being loved by so many while being simultaneously diminished as a true art form with genuine societal impact. How did it start as being one of the few media where a woman’s talent and intelligence was valued to a medium where so many women are seen as being denigrated? (Perhaps some of those deeper questions could be explored in an accompanying web discussion).

It would be a huge undertaking though and would probably take a few years of an all out commitment. PBS would be a good presenter for this, believe it or not. A couple of years ago, they had a documentary series on the history of American Comedy called Make Em Laugh and it was excellent! If comedy, why not daytime drama?

I think we all agree that these new faces on this show can go, and alot of these younger actors. I’m sorry but my list of newbies & others can hit the road.

    {Daisy, Daniel, Kevin, Ricky, Carmine, Lily, Cane, Eden, even the New Heather, Sophia, and I’m sure the list can go on.}

I understand these contract talks get nasty, and it sounds like Eileen took one for the team when she came back. However can this show justified hiring all these actors from canceled soaps and pay them big bucks. I’m sorry the folks from GH and AMC I know they were popular, but I’m not feeling this.

It seems like every actor on Y&R going through contract talks {the vets} it just get ugly. Eric Braeden, Melody Thomas Scott, Eileen Davidson, Jess Walton. Many jobs go through cuts, and at least (some jobs) streamline their budgets and work with there employees. One thing that should be put out there should be a HIRING FREEZE @ yr. Stop hiring other people from other daytime shows or former actors from 20-30 years ago who used to be popular primetime stars.

I’m all for the veterans, but Maria is such a hypocrite! All these stars taking paycuts, and this chick think she too good to take one for the team as well too!

I do remember Jamey saying the Judith Chapman is making some big bucks too (sorry Luke) I know you love you some Gloria, and she ok but I rather they cut Glo and Jeffrey over a Eileen Davidson/Ashley..

I suppose that if one is a studio exec, that one would view daytime dramas as the Titanic. How could a person get enough young viewers in the last year or two left before the whole thing goes down?

Answer, by focusing on Fen, Eden, Daniel, Kyle, Ricky, and Daisy.

So after figuring ‘it’ out, I am glad that Eileen Davidson has something else to fall back on. Her books. It’s probably best she is not around for the final year of Y&R. What a mess that will be.
