HomeTVAll My ChildrenRatings, Rants and Raves: General Hospital is No. 1 Soap Among Women 18-34! Jamey Giddens May 20, 2012 All My Children, Days of Our Lives, General Hospital, One Life to Live, The Bold and the Beautiful, The Young and The Restless 28 Comments Frank Valentini and Ron Carlivati are working similar ratings magic on General Hospital, to what they pulled out of their hats at their last soap opera. Let's just hope this time ABC gives a damn. GH was the Number 1 daytime soap opera among the coveted women 18-34 demo the week of May 7–11, 2012. (Source: Soap Opera Network) GH also inched up 34,000 total viewers over the previous week, and was up year-to-date 71,000. The sudser was up one-tenth of a point in households, and held steady among W18-49. Several of the former One Life to Live duo's premiere Port Charles story arcs were exploding all over the canvas the week in question. Mob enforcer Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) stopped the alter of his mob boss Sonny Corinthos' (Maurice Benard) psychotic, socialite girlfriend Kate Howard (Kelly Sullivan) from fleeing the country; while an unhinged stripper-beater-upper Ronnie (Ronnie Marmo) was shot dead by John McBain (Michael Easton), after having kidnapped Lulu Spencer (Julie Marie Berman) and a preggars Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco). As if those stories weren't hot enough, Starr Manning (Kristen Alderson) almost shot Sonny; Spinelli (Bradford Anderson) found video proof Maxie (Jen Lilley) didn't kill Lisa Niles (Brianna Brown); Heather Webber (Robin Mattson) murdered Maggie and framed her for Steve's (Scott Reeves) medical crimes and Llanview exes Todd Manning (Roger Howarth) and Tea Delgado (Florencia Lozano) faced off over "Estrella". This show is officially on EFFIN' FIYA and I don't care who knows it! Haters to the left. NBC's Days of Our Lives also had a good week. DAYS went up 103,000 total viewers, and increased one-tenth of a point among W18-49. DAYS held steady among W18-34 and in households. In story, Jarlena, Bope and Cafe(?) were all presumed dead after an explosion at the safe house. It turned out err body was really still alive, having discovered a trap door. When the Bradys, Hortons et al. learned their loved ones weren't dead, Sami (Alison Sweeney) acted a plum fool. For once, who could blame her? As the Salem superheroes were planning to go undercover to finally destroy Stefano (Joe Mascolo), his daughter Lexie (Renee Jones) became resolved to stop seeking treatment for her brain tumor, while former son EJ (James Scott) was caught shirtless with Sami, by a still-struggling-to-come-out to his parents Will (Chandler Massey). If the sight of a half-naked James Scott wasn't enough to make Will blurt out he's gay, I don't know what was! Over at CBS, The Young and the Restless tied its all-time low among W18-34, while The Bold and the Beautiful fell two-tenths of a ratings point among the same demo. Y&R began the groody storyline of Sharon Newman (Sharon Case) aching to be romanced by Victor (Eric Braeden), a long-time father figure for the heroine, not to mention the grandfather of her children. Jess Walton, who is much too talented for the crap she's been given to play in recent years, also exited Genoa City along with her character Jill Foster Abbott. I know Walton says her departure is temporary, but with the way veteran actors are being treated on that set, who could blame her if she doesn't return? Another mistreated Y&R legend, Eileen Davidson, saw her iconic character be made to look like a complete and utter fool, by catching Patch and Angie, er Tucker (Stephen Nichols) and Harmony (Debbi Morgan) in bed. I'm not upset about Tucker cheating on Ashley. Sordid affairs are par for the course on soaps, but Y&R appears to be playing musical bed mates again and it makes even less sense than when Sharon was screwing everyone in town — save for Zapato the dog. Harmony is supposed to be in love with Neil (Kristoff St. John), who is married to Sofia (Julia Pace Mitchell); so she screws Tucker, whose secret past with Laura Spencer (Genie Francis) is what had Tucker on the outs with Ashley? Meanwhile, Harmony wants Seargent Jesse (Darnell Williams) to pretend to be her man, in order to throw Neil off her scent. It's like the worst, multi-soap fan fic mash up ever! People simply don't tune in to Y&R for Genie Francis, Debbi Morgan, Darnell Williams or Stephen Nichols — all of whom I adored in their prior soap roles. Core fans of this soap want to watch the sagas of the Chancellors, Abbotts, Newmans, Winters, Fenmore-Baldwins and Williams. This means Kay (Jeanne Cooper), Jill (Jess Walton), Jack (Peter Bergman), Ashley (Eileen Davidson), Victor (Eric Braeden), Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott), Neil (Kristoff St. John), Paul (Doug Davidson), Michael (Christian LeBlanc) and Lauren (Tracey Bregman) should be the patriarchs and matriarchs of Genoa City. The popular actors who make up the children, in-laws and/or grandchildren of the aforementioned characters—Joshua Morrow (Nick), Sharon Case (Sharon), Michelle Stafford (Phyllis) Amelia Heinle (Victoria), Michael Muhney (Adam), Marcy Rylan (Abigail), Billy Miller (Billy), Liz Hendrickson (Chloe), Greg Rikaart (Kevin), Christel Khalil (Lily), Daniel Goddard (Cane), Bryton James (Devon) and Michael Graziadei (Daniel)—should be driving story, as opposed to those portraying poorly conceived caricatures, who have been attached to popular villains from the past. Yes, I am talking about Yvonne "Five Days a Week" Zima (Daisy) and Ricky (Peter Porte). Essentally Daisy and Ricky are the same character; children of sociopaths, who came to Genoa City with plot driven grudges, yet possessing none of the depth or inner motivation of the iconic characters they are supposed to represent on the canvas. It is a shame that Sheila Carter's (Kimberlin Brown) legend has been destroyed by this regime's insistence on connecting a character like Daisy to it. Porte is a talented enough actor, but his storyline is almost identical to an adult Adam's origin tale. Will his dead galpal turn up alive, only to fall into a volcano too? Ricky could be salvaged by a decent, nuanced long story and some much needed characterization. Speaking of characters with lazily, similar back stories, Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) and Daisy are also one in the same — girl rapists, who targeted legacy hunks and got pregnant. The difference, of course, is that Egan can act. Additionally, she has managed to achieve a nice chemical reaction opposite Muhney. However, this promising pairing has been backburned, while lackluster Daisy continues to drive story. Here's hoping reports of Zima's firing prove true. Blake Hood has been a great addition as Kyle Abbott, and Jessica Heap (Eden) is growing on me. I wouldn't mind seeing more of them, epecially with a disapproving Cousin Abby and Daniel threaded. It would also be cool for Y&R to finally cast a Dr. Nate Hastings who sticks and put him in a triangle with Devon and Roxy. Since Roxy's portrayer, in demand primetime actress Tatyana Ali, likely can't go on contract, recast the role. B&B saw Hope (Kimberly Matula) move out of Liam's (Scott Clifton) house, while a stubbornly-determined Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) began planning their Italian wedding the week in question. Pretty much the rest of the air shows consisted of Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood), Liam and Hope talking to their parents about their love triangle; that was when Amber (Adrienne Frantz) wasn't trying to convince a newbie that Rick (Jacob Young) was a cross dresser. While B&B's frothy, light stories can be fun, this show is in danger of becoming boring. I really hope after the Italian location shoot airs, B&B can start telling more varied stories. With a new lesbian couple and Deacon Sharpe (Sean Kanan) to contend with, who knows, maybe it will happen even sooner? See you next Ratings! 28 Responses pjc722 May 20, 2012 While I am not a fan of General Hospital, I am happy that both Days and GH have seen enormous and significant jumps in one week. But remember, in September GH will most likely move time period so the truth is in the pudding if the audience will follow to an earlier time slot. ANd when Days is good, it’s fantastic. The Will storyline is realistically told and brings in the selfish nature of Sami perfectly without losing the heart of the story, Will being gay. My biggest gripe with the show are the other stories that are dull if not juvenile or recycled from the old days. Gaby and her secret love for Chad is bad especially since we all just finished being bored to death with the Austin ‘faux affair’. Bringing down Stefano debacle just shows you how many heroes there are in Salem that can’t really get anything done. John, Marlena, Bo, Hope, Roman, Rafe, and those other actors brought back to show what days used to be clearly show that there is too much of one thing and not a lot of another on this soap. Log in to Reply Ranae1221 May 20, 2012 Jason and Sam semi-break up, Sam moves out and turns to McBain, Jason turns to Elizabeth and ratings go up for the 4th straight week. The anticpated Jason and Elizabeth scenes as well as the Sam/Elizabeth scenes pulled in the highest ratings for the week. Coincidence? I think not! GH is on fire and I am so enjoying the show! Log in to Reply pjc722 May 20, 2012 Y&R and B&B seemed to be written while Maria Bell and her brother in law, Bill jr, are at some cocktail party. They just make no sense and with both shows crying about budget cuts it makes no sense for the large casts who have nothing to do. I never understood on PASSIONS that you would have a scene between 2 characters but have 6-8 other stars in the scene as well. It always seemed to me to be a waste of talent and if those actors can act and be on screen why not write for them or just send them on their way. Y&R has too many people we don’t care about center stage. Yes, we love Debbi Morgan, but she is a new character on the show tied to a second tier character, Devon, and another new character who hasn’t made much of a foothold on the show, Tucker. WHY are we seeing Harmony every day?! Seeriously, I would like to see more development of this character in a good way showing how someone with an addiction can make a come back. Of course, we all know of the screen time that Dull-zy and Ricky are getting and none of us understand it. WIth Dull-zy’s rap sheet she wouldn’t be allowed a puppy and for Michael not being able to at least kick her out of the apartment building with a restraining order is ridiculous. I don’t want Sheila back but this story would have been fantastic if we just saw that someone was manipulating all the situations that makes Dull-zy win, i.e. blackmailing the judge who gave Dull-zy custody of her kid in the first place OR sleeping with the super of the building OR whatever to make the impossible possible, say Sheila or someone like that, and in the end it’s Lauren who ends it all by killing the true villian and ending what was once a great story arch but now is a cartoon. Log in to Reply marybee50 May 20, 2012 pjc722-I echo your post.I don’t watch GH,but hope that their ratings improve so they can stay on the air.Days went up when Will came back on the scene,he was out for a whole week. I can tolerate most of Days except the Ian storyline. Are thet setting him up to be the next Stefano? Also, the Gabi story falls flat, but Will is going to be involved,so maybe it will get better.I do miss my Sonny though. Y&R,parts of it are great.Jack/Nikki are great, and I am liking Abby and Kyle,Adam and Chelsea.I miss Jill and it has only been a week. Stopped watching B&B.They finally drove me away with the Liam/Hope/Steffy mess. Log in to Reply pjc722 May 20, 2012 B&B has a cast as talented as Y&R yet they are not using them. It’s been successful for the show to be able to after 25 years still revolve around fashion but I am surprised on how CENTRIC after all these years it has been seeing that it is the only show based in a REAL CITY. That being said, with Brooke, Stephanie, Taylor, Ridge, Thorn, and the rest, it’s sad that the show keeps them in the closet only to bring them out for the younger set to support them. B&B needs to shake up it’s stories in a huge way and say good bye to some of the characters on the show so it’s not so glaring that they are not being used. For example, have Thorne accept a job in NY as creative director so we just don’t see him say HI once in a while. Donna should move away to Chicago to work with Pam because they are no longer as enjoyable to watch when they are thrown in once in a while for comic relief. Some of the younger cast needs to be jettisoned, as well. Revigorate stories and characters. It would be great to see Taylor meet Bill and a romance blossom. Now you would have an adult love triangle with Katie vs Taylor for Bill. Brooke could venture out on her own to start a company that isn’t a fashion house. It could always cause problems for Ridge in some way but it would also give the show new places for characters to be show other than Liam’s office, Bills office, Steffy’s or Ridge’s. It would also allow the show to more character driven stories as opposed to LET”S THROW HIM AND HER AGAINST THE WALL AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. Log in to Reply TV Gord May 20, 2012 GH will DEFINITELY move timeslots, because the 3pm (eastern) hour will no longer be a network hour. My prediction is that GH will improve its numbers when it moves into OLTL’s old timeslot. The question of whether that will be enough to save it remains to be seen… Log in to Reply stefanstavros May 20, 2012 I agree that GH is VERY watchable and I couldn’t be happier. Kudos to Frank and Ron: I knew you guys would bring your magic to GH! By the way, does anyone know when ABC is supposed to announce the daytime lineup for 2012-2013?? I thought the upfronts were supposed to all be last week. Log in to Reply stefanstavros May 20, 2012 the daytime lineup for this coming fall season Log in to Reply SoapArmageddon May 20, 2012 Since the only thing interesting on Days has been the Will storyline, I would be inclined to give all the credit for any improvement in the ratings to this story. I hope Ken Corday, NBC, and the new writing/production team are taking notes. Joe Mascolo and the character of Stefano have generated good stories for Days in the past but I really believe it’s now time for the show to move on from those kinds of stories. They are so nineteen eigthies. And I have, rather unscientifically, counted at least SEVENTEEN stories on soaps during the past decade in which somebody’s Mom and Dad turned out not to be his/her real Mom and Dad (seven times on Y&R alone). Is their anybody, except the hacks in the writing rooms, who really believes that this is doing anything but making soaps look even more silly? Log in to Reply RealityCheck 33 May 20, 2012 WTF is wrong with MAB? The fantastic Melissa Claire Egan is brought on-board to boost Y&R and she’s paired with Micheal Muhney, who is nothing short of greatness. Then they are both backburned? MAB is a fool. This bitch has got to go. Log in to Reply js3557 May 20, 2012 Hmmmm…..Jasam fall apart, Sam moves out and turns to McBain, and Liason have scenes = higher ratings. Who would have thunk it? Me Log in to Reply GHFan777 May 20, 2012 Ranae and Js…thank you for posting what I was thinking also. Not surprised that ratings went up with a Jasam semi break up…McBam flirting… and of course Liason reconnecting…They lost a lot of fans when they first broke up Liason, and then later when they killed off sweet baby Jake. Now if they really want to see the numbers go up…start planting seeds for a Jake resurrection …and watch the numbers REALLY jump up. Log in to Reply liason4real May 20, 2012 I think GH ratings increased due to better story telling, characters being written properly (Liz, Jason, and Liason) and the promise of ending some soap pairings (JaSam), the start of new soap pairings (McBam, Johnny/Star/Michael/Carly/Todd), and the return of GH vets. Sonny is actually showing some maturity in light of seeing Kate/Connie’s mental issues. Alexis is all over the place, Tracy is not sitting on a shelf, Mac is hanging out with Felecia, etc. We’re seeing the hospital all of the time, and stories are weaving in and out. Upfronts are for highlighting primetime scheduling changes. Daytime is rarely, if ever, mentioned. ABC hasn’t yet made a final decision on GH’s fate. They will wait until they see how Good Morning America in the Afternoon fairs at 2PM. If it does well and affiliates like it, GH is probably done and will have to throw a finale together on short notice. Log in to Reply chellefish40 May 20, 2012 I think not either! I had written GH off almost a yr ago and decided to tune back in with John, Starr and others coming over and I’m glad I did!! GH is on fire, I love this show again. If they would get Liason back together, I am so on board!!! :)GH is good again, but I’m not a fan of Anthony and wish that Luke or Tracy would whack him, but please keep Johnny, nice eye candy. Log in to Reply chellefish40 May 20, 2012 i hope it does move, i work right smack in the middle of it now and have to dvr just to fast forward thru half the show Log in to Reply chellefish40 May 20, 2012 It is great to see the hospital again isn’t it. Log in to Reply marie1972 May 21, 2012 I really don’t get why some are saying that the new actors coming to Y&R are causing people to not watch the show. The vets like Sharon,Phyllis, Nick, Victor, Nikki, Jack and a few others are still always on. The show is doing horrible in the ratings because of the writing. For me I want to see new characters come on board and interact with other characters because it will hopefully end up with a new story instead of seeing the same characters say and do the same exact thing they did a couple of months ago. Log in to Reply Bartman202 May 21, 2012 I’m with you, Jamey – it’s sad what the Maria Arena Bell writing hacks have done with the Sheila Carter legend! Tying Daisy & Ryder to not only Sheila Carter, but to Tom Fisher (who didn’t know one another when their paths crossed in the mid-2000’s) is just bad writing for plot’s sake. There is NO WAY Daisy & Ryder could be Tom’s kids, just no freakin’ way!! I could sit here and type for hours about how horrid “Y & R” has become – us life-long viewers deserve so much better than this mind-numbing mess being slopped at us with a pitchfork!! I pray the ratings keep plummeting so CBS/SONY does some behind-the-scenes hatchet work!! Log in to Reply ChrisGa May 21, 2012 [quote=Carol2][quote=RealityCheck 33]WTF is wrong with MAB? Frankly, out of all the characters they’ve introduced/reintroduced in the last 2 or 3 years(Tucker, Sofia, Ronan, Genevieve, Harmony, Ricky, Daisy) she’s the only one that I think actually has potential for serious longevity on the canvas. Log in to Reply marybee50 May 21, 2012 I was a huge Shadam fan,but I’m liking Adam and Chelsea. How refreshing was Fri’s episode when there was no revenge plotting or dirty tricks, just two people discovering what each other likes,i.e. the Outsiders.I’m sure that won’t last, but it was a nice scene, something missing from Y&R for a long time. Log in to Reply Cyberologist May 21, 2012 I refuse to watch Y/R when Daisy is on that’s it period….she’s a horrid actress…& them bringing her back what? four times? hasn’t improved her performance for me…. If anything I’d say we’re seeing the hospital less. THANK YOU! BRAVO! & kudos! I’m still waiting for them to deem Elizabeth Webber worthy of a “real” storyline…or (deem worthy) even a scene with the greatness that’s the OLTL actors; I’m anxious to see her in a scene with John McBain…but I guess that’s just for the actors with more story than they can handle. Im glad that soaps are gaining viewers esp GH just because I don’t like most of the storylines doesn’t mean I want it to fail; I still support the four shows.. I’m not a Nielsen box owner but I do tape the shows & run them through. What I like? the Konnie reveal to Sonny, Patrick’s storyline regarding Robin….don’t care about Maxie & Matt being thrown under in this Lisa crap don’t care who killed Lisa I wanted her dead six months before she was killed I was just glad she was finally gone ….More Heather Grant….don’t care about Jason’s new baby mama drama…but I’m glad he’s being written like crap finally he goes under the bus in writing imagine after all these years. Whew Tea/Todd scene she was a screamy banshee for me … gave me a headache… B/B Karen Spencer is gay & Crystal Chappell is her partner? Interesting now $Bill has another issue other than who is son is bangin’ Big Anvil Bill can’ find out….. Her character is such a boring wash-rinse-repeat addition. And it seems like she’s always on, somehow being plopped in everyone’s story – or bumping into someone so she can deliver a zinger. She is so Chloe 2.0 – and I like the original a hell of a lot better and wish she’d get half the time that Chelsea is being forced on the screen. I even like Daisy better than Chelsea. Yeah, that’s right, I said it. Log in to Reply Leave a Reply Cancel Reply You must be logged in to post a comment.
