HomeTV39th Annual Daytime Emmy AwardsChandler Massey on Daytime Emmy Win: “I Definitely Did Not Think It Was Going to Happen This Year” Jillian Bowe June 24, 2012 39th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, Days of Our Lives, Daytime Emmys, HLN, NBC, Soap Opera 16 Comments Days Of Our Lives' star Chandler Massey has to be feeling pretty good right about now! The actor dished with AfterElton on taking home his first award for Outstanding Younger Actor last night at the 39th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards. Massey stated: “I didn't hear the name that they called, but all I heard was my Dad go ‘Yeah!’ because my Dad was sitting right next to me, so that's how I knew. Then I went up and flubbed the speech!” Massey added, “It was crazy! I definitely did not think it was going to happen this year. Not at all.” Humble and he can act, a rare combination these days in Hollyweird. 16 Responses distinctive2013 June 24, 2012 I don’t think I have been this excited for a Daytime Emmy win in quite a few years. I also don’t think I have seen such a justified win in that same amount of time! Chandler Massey is turning into such a brilliant actor. He has taken Will Horton into the stratosphere beyond all my expectations. I have a love/hate relationship with the Daytime Emmy Awards because it seems that sometimes the submitted episodes do matter while other times, not so much. For example, this win seems justified as Chandler had a brilliant reel yet we all remember seeing Drew Tyler Bell take home this same award a few years back for a reel that was well…lacking beyond belief. How glad I am that episode submissions seemed to matter here a whole lot. Perhaps it was also a load of industry buzz as well. Massey’s gay storyline has been the talk of Daytime for quite some time now and has gotten the entire genre some recognition in other media outlets. Maybe the combination of having a solid episode and high exposure really solidified this victory. And yes, Chanlder is beyond a sweetheart. He is so humble, almost to the point where he doesn’t think any of the praise he gets is deserved. And he is also ready to give thanks to the folks that have made it possible for him to be on the show and do the type of work he is doing. A great actor, seemingly genuine personality, and incredible good looking on top of that. My favorite win of the night for sure. Log in to Reply sodsince16 June 24, 2012 he didn’t think he was going to win? does that explain that suit? sorry, just being snarky…. Log in to Reply ChrisGa June 25, 2012 Well his was by far the most satisfying win of the night for me; I kinda thought it would come down to him and Chad Duell with Eddie Alderson as the possible spoiler(basically because OLTL has gotten very little love from the Academy in the last several years beyond the actual nominations). Massey is the MVP of that show on just about every episode he’s in and I suspect with all the gold his been spinning now that Will’s come out he’ll probably repeat the category next year. If he had played a character who WASN’T coming out, does anyone think he would have won? He was a shoo-in! Sorry, Eddie, comas are a dime a dozen in soapland. If someone who wasn’t a viewer of DAYS and didn’t know the planned story for Massey, the episode just shows a young guy who is upset that he and his girlfriend broke up. He never says why in the episode. Of course, one can assume why but it could be for a number of reasons. This was, in fact, one of the things a critic thought may cost Chandler the award because they said if voters watched and didn’t know Will was gay, his scenes would be rather confusing. Log in to Reply lostfan June 25, 2012 The most deserved award by far! So happy for Chandler and Days, and for days for writing–they deserved it. despite what naysayers have said, the show did do a complete turn around starting last Sept 26, and I have loved it! Log in to Reply cord2012 June 25, 2012 Congratulations to Chandler! When I originally saw the scenes that he eventually submitted for Emmy consideration, I was really struck by them and thought they were excellent. I was sort of surprised that he selected them, however, because they weren’t like the Emmy bait I had become so used to. They were more subtle and calmer w/o over the top theatrics and action. I’m inclined to disagree that he won simply because it was a coming out story. It may have helped give him better writing to work with, but no other actor has won for a coming out story that I’m aware of. Van Hansis put in some very solid work during his coming out story in 2006 and didn’t win, despite much press. AMC was also given much praise for Bianca’s coming out, but again, no acting Emmys. Log in to Reply TV Gord June 25, 2012 Any critic who watched those leading up episodes and didn’t know Will was gay hasn’t been watching soaps (or television) for the last 30 years. God, even Marlena wasn’t THAT dense! If he had not won, I would have sworn off Daytime TV forever. There hasn’t been a recipient so deserving in many years. Congratulations Chandler! You did it! Log in to Reply marknsprmo June 25, 2012 Chandler had some great material last year to work off. This year, he has been the only reason to watch Days up until very recently with Lexie’s death. I am not sure he fits the younger acting catagory this year. Next year, I would like to see him go for best supporting or even best lead, depending on what the rest of the year brings. Congrats to your award. It was well deserved. And thanks for giving many hours of great viewing to your audience. Log in to Reply cord2012 June 25, 2012 ^^ Chandler is only 21. He is eligible for the younger category through age 25, I believe. He has played a major role on DAYS this year, but I don’t see any reason why he should enter into another category prematurely…unless they abolish the younger category. Log in to Reply Soap_fan_forever June 26, 2012 I am sooo unbelievebly happy that Chandler won!! For once in I don’t know how long..someone won that I really wanted them to win! Most of this years were ones that did a couple amazing scenes…where there were others that did a year worth and weren’t even nominated..honestly I didn’t think he was going to get it..figured Chad would get it for his week of emotion over the rape..yes that was good..but that’s really the only thing he’s done…but Chandler has just knocked it out of the park day after day..he’s an amazing actor that does so wonderful with the material given..for the last year I really felt I was watching someone struggle with their sexuality…and everything else going on in Will’s life…kudos to the writers for giving him great material..and even more to Chad who plays out the amazing work!
