Ratings, Rants and Raves: Bell Soaps Inch Upward; General Hospital Gives Good Umbrella, Ella, Ella, Eh

The week of June 11-15 was kind to the Bell family's soaps on CBS, ratings-wise. (Source: Soap Opera Network) The Young and the Restless went up 83,000 total viewers, and inched up one-tenth of a point in households. Y&R held steady among women 18-49 and W18-34.

In story, Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) lost Nick's (Joshua Morrow) baby, after arguing with daffy Daisy (Yvonne Zima) on her wedding day. Following the tragedy, Phick decided to get married anyway, with their assorted children looking on. I have to say I enjoyed the Phyllis/Daisy scenes. For the first time, Zima managed to hold her own in a scene. It was a refreshing change for a storyline that has gone on far too long.

Elsewhere in Genoa City, Kevin (Greg Rikaart) agreed to help Genevieve (Genie Francis) find out who was stealing the money she'd stolen from Colin (Tristan Rogers). Heather (Jennifer London) kicked her sexy, psycho brother Ricky (Peter Porte) out of her apartment. The Abbott siblings clashed over Abby (Marcy Rylan) giving Jack (Peter Bergman) the loot to buy Beauty of Nature and Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) and Sharon (Sharon Case) got into it over a real horse's ass. No, I don't mean Victor (Eric Braeden).  I'm not hating Y&R as much as I had been.

The Bold and the Beautiful gained 67,000 total viewers over the previous week, and was up a whopping 404,000 year-to-date. B&B went up one-tenth of a point in households, and held steady among W18-49 and W18-34.

Storywise, Dollar Bill Spencer (Don Diamont) was successful in his attempt to have Hope's (Kimberly Matula) biological father, Deacon Sharpe (Sean Kanan), released from prison. Later in Italy, Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) struggled with watching her stepsister and her ex-husband Liam (Scott Clifton) strolling around in pre-marital bliss.

Meanwhile, Deacon was feeling hella guilty about participating in Bill's plan to bust up the happy couple, yet soldiered on, due to Bill's continued threats to send him back to prison. B&B's signature supercouple, Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) and Ridge (Ron Moss), spent most of the week in search of a big olive.

It was fun to see the cast of B&B jet off to a glam location shoot again. While the Steffy/Liam/Hope triangle had been starting to get on my nerves, transplanting them to Italy rejuvenated the story a bit for me. That isn't to say I want the focus to remain on the young' uns once they all get back to L.A. It's time for the grown ups to get some decent storylines. Maybe Heather Tom's (Katie) recent Daytime Emmy win will inspire that development?

Days of Our Lives fell 47,000 total viewers over the previous week, but was still up year-to-date by 136,000. DAYS went up one-tenth of a point among W18-34 and held steady in households. Among W18-49, the NBC sudser fell one-tenth of a point.

The residents of Salem were stunned by Will Horton's (Chandler Massey) arrest for Stefano's (Joe Mascolo) murder the week of June 11-15. Will was most shocked when EJ (James Scott) posted his bail, informing the lad he was once again his slave. These two are so Fifty Shades of Gay, it ain't even funny!

Roman (Joshua Taylor) realized he couldn't investigate a murder where the victim was his mortal enemy—and all of the suspects would likely be attending his family reunion this summer—so he handed the case over to Rafe (Galen Gering), who is basically also related to everyone involved by marriage.

Stefano's merry widow, Kate (Lauren Koslow), set fire to their divorce papers and her non-compete clause; while her new man, Ian (Ian Buchanan), tried to team up with EJ, only to be shot down. Ian's boss, Victor (John Aniston), tried to woo back Aunt Maggie (Suzanne Rogers), but unfortunately for Vic, Hallmark hasn't made the perfect "I'm sorry I stole your eggs and gave them to my sterile friends" card yet.

Gabi (Camila Banus) didn't realize just how off in the head the dude she hired to pretend to stalk her is. Wouldn't it be cool if this Andrew turned out to be Shane and Kim's son by the same name? I'm warming up to this storyline. I am a sucker for a heroine trapped in a secret room, and I believe Molly Burnett (Melanie) will do Deidre Hall and Kristian Alfonso proud!

The other big story for the week was the one where Ian continued to drug Brady (Eric Martsolf), which I have to say, I am fast-forwarding through.

General Hospital dipped 46,000 total viewers over the previous week. GH also slid one-tenth of a point in households, yet held steady among W18-49 and W18-34.

Emotions were running high in Port Charles the week in question. Sam (Kelly Monaco) wasn't trying to hear Jason's (Steve Burton) day late, and dollar short apologies about their not-so-dead baby. NuKristina (Lindsey Morgan) continued to get on everybody's doggone nerves with this reality show, and by everybody I mean her parents, and me the viewer.  Although, Trey (Erik Valdez), the skeevy, reality show producer, is definitely a keeper!

Matt (Jason Cook) had to go to Pentonville for murdering Lisa, which caused more cutting up and carrying on from Maxie (Jen Lilley). Fellow over-the-top blonde Kate (Kelly Sullivan) remembered a disturbing part of her past, with the help of Dr. Ewen (Nathin Butler). Todd (Roger Howarth) warned his new bestie Carly (Laura Wright) to stay away from Johnny (Brandon Barash), the latter of whom went into business with his ex-galpal, Lulu (Julie Marie Berman).

McBain (Michael Easton) learned Sonny (Maurice Benard) hadn't killed his sister and…LIASON PLAYED POOL!!!  Outside of NuKristina shrieking through every scene she's in, like a hissing cat that needs to be spayed, I thoroughly enjoyed GH the week in question. It is nice to see so many story threads being interwoven. Outside of Rihanna, nobody gives good umbrella like Frank and Ron! See you next Ratings.

As a Liason fan, I am glad to see Jason and Liz share scenes but I am beyond tired of her propping JaSam. That couple has no chemistry whereas Liason sparkle together.

And I wish I could agree about the young man who plays Trey on GH but I cannot. He and NuKristina are unpleasant characters and weak actors who are COMPLETELY unnecessary. But of course, if you liked The Ford Brothers on OLTL, you’ll like Trey who presents as a long-lost (less attractive) member of that band of brothers.

IMO, for the week in question, B&B was the best soap (and continued to be the following week.) olives and all ;-)

I was a little confused as to why Jason played pool with Liz, mostly because I thought that was his and Carly’s thing, but I think that Liz is showing growth by not totally going after Jason the second Sam said she could have him. Sam showed growth too. The way Sam was written before, to be a clingy crybaby, was not doing Kelly Monaco justice. The Sam we were getting before would have thrown her arms around Jason and said they were fine, no matter how badly she was hurt, but this Sam does me proud, telling Jason to get his sorry a$$ out and to run to Liz like he always does. KeMo was on fire. Glad to see the show is holding steady in 18-49… That is what Madison Avenue looks at, right?

While “Y & R” is, unfortunately, up in viewers for the week ending 6/15, it’s overall total viewership is WAY DOWN from this time last year: Over 350,000 viewers, the only show to lose over a quarter million viewers.

The only thing in “Y & R”‘s favor these days is in it consistency: It is consistent in losing viewers, telling oh-so mediocre lame stories and it adamancy in keeping Maria Arena Bell in charge of this train-wreck of a serial!

What needs to be done to get this awful hack outta here?!? WHAT???

Jason taught Liz how to play pool around 2001 when JY took over as Lucky #2. There are several Liason scenes of them playing pool at Jake’s and when Liz lived at the PH around August 2002. Jason also took Liz for her first motorcycle ride in August 1999 and continue doing so until Frons put a stop to Liason by moving Jason over to Courtney.

Happy for B&B! To me it’s been the best and most entertaining soap this year. I’ve loved the Italy remote and love that B&B does things like this (Aspen, Cabo, Italy). I hope to see more stories too but I must say this triangle has me excited to watch the show every day.

:) It’s SOOOOOOOOOOO nice to watch your network soaps and honestly enjoy both at the same time. It’s been years. I’m inspired to see Y&R CUT the kookiness and tame down the over the top stories and being grounded a bit. I’m acutally starting to enjoy 2 of the newer characters…Genura & Avery. Avery & Phyllis’s scenes have been very touching & warm grounding Phyllis. Avery the actress is good actress. Good things…Sophia is gone, Daisy is gone, Ricky is going, Angelina & Angelo are history…someone somewhere as I’ve been saying change is happening. Bill Bell are hearing fans FINALLY cry for balance. He’s the angel seer of Y&R. I think it’s CBS pressuring Sony…if so this time I’m happy with network meddling and slamming down the hammer on MAB & cronies, Sony! The focus is on the vets and carrying the stories, this is where it should instead of fans yelling at top of their lungs! I’m the minority and Y&R is still everyone’s favorite whipping boy but Y&R has been good the last month. I actually have faith & believe it will continue instead of being a “debby doubter”. :~ I’m with Jamey about Phyllis & Daisy scenes…cracked me up Daisy kept calling Phyllis “Granny, Grandma” I’m loving the the new character of Carmine & Abby, today’s episode with Abby “pretending” being kidnapped and MR is playing her strengths (it’s such a Lizzie storyline) Abby & Carmine sizzles together with chemistry, I think they finally found the guy for Abby. I’m happy that Jack pulled one over on Victor and Abby supported the Abbotts this time not the Newmans. Some of the best scenes was when Sharon & Nikki in the cat fight in the stable and in jail, cat scratch fever! ;) I can say I’m loving Y&R right now and the Phyllis story was a needed shot in the arm. I’m enjoying Heather, they finally found the right Heather giving her depth and layers!!! B&B is near perfection, only soap that do REAL location shoots now and so nice to watch. Loving Steffy and the actress. MAN! she has grown the last 3 years..WOW..hated her in the beginning, now turning into one of my favorite actresses on B&B! Again, Jamey is right, give the adults story to mix in with the younger but this was focused on Hope’s wedding (looking beauitful) and the location shots were splenid and romantic…both soaps are still based in more realistic story telling which is my type of soap.

Y&R. Big deal. It’s doing better than it was during the Gen is trying to sell Beauty of Nature cr@p of Feb and March, but everything else is stupid.

It’s the Phyllis Show, as another Williams family member has to be deemed completely insane and a murderer. First Crazy Carl runs off to no-where, Isabella becomes a nuthouse case, then Patty keeps popping up whenever it’s least convenient for Jack. Now we have the perfectly good Pete Porte, being revealed to be a murderer, and having killed Daisy. Ho hum.

Eileen D is on once a week, not nearly enough. The only good s/l was Ash catching Tuck and Harm in bed, but that’s all been thrown aside. Gen is broke, and boring, and bringing Kevin in on yet another crazy scheme.

    Cancel the show.

Great news Y&R is up! Still way ahead in viewers of all the other soaps. The show has been improving recently so that’s good! Bartman, if that’s the way you feel about our soap, & cannot support it “just stop watching” we will survive without you.

    Wow – a newbie – FRESH BLOOD!!

Pardon me, but I have been watching this serial since 1981 (probably before you were even an ovum). As a long-time/decades viewer, I can say pretty much what I want in terms of how this show has SPIRALED out of control…

As for what I have to say: You no like? TAKE A HIKE!!

With General Hospital falling in the ratings, one has to wonder if the BUMP upwards they got was from OLTL fans who jumped over to watch their “favs” from the canceled soap on this “almost” canceled one. They stuck around until they realized that they already saw the storylines on OLTL so they know the conclusions and left OR they saw the violence and decided that if they wanted a mob war they’d buy the Sopranos.

Pay attention GH regime. The fans love SOAPS and want them but they/we are not going to just take crap and feel lucky that we at least have that! NO WAY! We want true and ORIGINAL good drama!!!

As for Y&R, MAB finally gets both the Daisy and Ricky characters to have some steam, i.e. that excellent scene with Phyllis who caused her own miscarriage NOT Daisy and then Ricky finally calling his dad out on just not being a dad to him, and they are leaving. Daisy awfully suddenly and without her child (great Phyllis gets to prance around as if she did nothing wrong EVER in her life now) and Ricky will flip and be sharing a block of rooms with his mom and aunt at whatever the name of the mental hospital is. Why couldn’t MAB write this story as Paul being totally wrong about Ricky and coming to the realization he was a really bad dad and then see Paul delve into alcohol or drugs or something dramatic.

B&B is one story and one cartoon villian. Stephanie should be walking into Bill’s office controlling this story, not Bill.

Days can only tell 2 great stories at any given time. Anything with Sami is great and now WILL’s stories are truly a great watch. The rest is just filler. Sure Lexie dying was sad but the corny ghost and horrible set made it feel like I was watching regional NO BUDGET theater.

Y&R has been ok. Im not really digging Carmine/Abby. I mean has Carmine been on before the last 2 days? The story of Carmine doesnt make sense. I mean hes mad that Angelina left so he stays in Genoa City instead of I dont know, GO AFTER HER!!! Again, maybe that was explained.
Im sorry but Sharon has gotten out of control. I mean every sentence lately out of her mouth is just so obnoxious. What the hell is wrong with her? Also, I dont get why Jack snapped at Victor saying that Abby was faking being lost? Uh, Jack, shes the Naked Heiress. She almost killed her mother’s finance.

Btw, how stupid was Daisy the other day? She sees Ricky kill some woman and she leaves, that I get. Why didnt she just tell Micheal over the phone, that theres evidence that Ricky killed someone?

On GH, who did kill McBain’s sister if it wasnt Sonny? I’ve watched bits and pieces of the show for the past few days, which is why Im asking. Maybe Im wrong, but Kate Sullivan is hitting it out of the park. She has done a damn good job playing Kate and Connie and her breakdown to Sonny and Ewen was great.
From what Ive seen, I dont like Kristina. She seems snippy and bitchy and having her do a reality show is lame.

No Bartman, not a “newbie”, been watching Y&R since 75, so you are wrong in your evaluation of me. I guess you have to hate Y&R and praise senseless GH to be accepted on this site.

Glad to see Y and R back up. I think the show is significantly better than it was at the end of 2011. My only wish is to get rid of Hogan. Can we get Kay A and Jack S back?
