HomeTVAll My ChildrenIt’s OFFICIAL: General Hospital Moving to 2 pm EST, Starting Sept 10 Jamey Giddens June 26, 2012 47 Comments ABC soap fans can breathe a momentary sigh of relief. The Mouse House has officially announced plans to move General Hospital to 2 pm EST. In a decidely modern twist, the news was broken on GH's Facebook page. See the statement below: Happy Tuesday GH Fans! We’re letting you know first – beginning MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 10th, we’re moving into our new time slot at 2:00 p.m. ET|1:00 p.m. PT|CT on ABC. You'll be able to catch all the intrigue and excitement of Port Charles one hour earlier! We equally excited about General Hospital's 50th anniversary on ABC next year.Share this news with your friends and family and make sure to tune in to General Hospital every day. As previously reported, Katie Couric's upcoming, syndicated talk show, Katie, will inherit GH's current timeslot on ABC-owned and operated stations this fall. Congrats to the cast and crew of General Hospital—led by showrunner Frank Valentini and head writer Ron Carlivati—on the Herculean effort they've put forth these past few months to turn this soap opera around. I'm certainly impressed with the changes, and from what I hear, so are the two people who really count — Anne Sweeney and Vicki Dummer! 47 Responses acespencer June 26, 2012 This is by far the best news ever. Guess that means that The Chew may be gone if GAA does good enough. No worries though that crap that killed OLTL and AMC can go! Log in to Reply damjd90210 June 26, 2012 Yessssssss praise God thank you Abc here hoping that the rating will go up Log in to Reply soapjunkie88 June 26, 2012 That’s fantastic news! Log in to Reply doodleynoodle June 26, 2012 This sucks in a way because I usually watch Days at that time, if I’m home. It will put two of the 4 remaining soaps head to head in a lot of markets. On the other hand wouldn’t it be the coolest if NBC moved Days to 2:00 against Gumby? We would see just how popular talk show premiere number 92 of the 2012 season really is. I would rather watch Dr. Oz & all things medical makes me want to hurl. Log in to Reply josser June 26, 2012 I hope the rumors that GH will actually bring a few other OLTL characters on for arcs (hello, Viki, Clint, Dorian, and Nathalie!). Log in to Reply DisillusionedGHfan June 26, 2012 I will admit, even though GH is still more mobsiptal, than hospital, the writing is no longer choppy and the stories impossible to follow if you have a functioning brain cell. There is actually forward momentum now and stories get a full run through instead of petering out leaving us to wonder how Guza/Phelps ever got emmys for perpetually awful crap you could spread on a shingle, then gag on! Heres hoping another year of GH will give it the time it needs to recover from the damage done to it! Log in to Reply acespencer June 26, 2012 Thank yo disillusionedghfan for hitting it on the head! I am all for some OLTL cross overs too Joss, I wanna see Dorian go after Edward and try and get the Q money! Imagine how awesome it would be to find out that Edward sold ELQ to the Buch’s due to none of the Grandkids wanting it. Que AJ’s return from the grave to claim ELQ! Log in to Reply BigFan June 26, 2012 Yeah! This is great news. This puts GH on right after Days on the East Coast. No competition here. Watch Days and turn the channel. Otherwise you can always record one and watch the other. I would always choose GH over anything else. Thank you Ron and Frank. Here’s hoping there are more great stories on the way and a guest appearance from Natalie wouldn’t be bad either. I would really like to see the story of Victor finished on GH. Maybe Allison Perkins is holding Victor in PC. Log in to Reply samanthadelayed June 26, 2012 As long as it is still going to be around I don’t care what time I watch it. Awesome news! Log in to Reply Cindy Reid June 26, 2012 Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is great news, I will still watch ABC, take GH off the air and all my family and friends will stop watching ABC daytime, that’s a lot of people. I am so happy the suits decided to keep GH, please let us have one soap on ABC! Log in to Reply doodleynoodle June 26, 2012 Please don’t mistake my whining for not being thrilled because I am! I started watching GH when I was a kid during the LL1 days. I started watching Days a few years ago because of SoapNet. GH is my show but I just hope that GH & Days don’t hurt each other in the ratings in markets where they will be coming on at the same time. Log in to Reply soapfan616 June 26, 2012 Stuck between two crappy talk shows is never good news but I guess it beats following the Revolution. Will GH ever crack a 2.0 again? Log in to Reply soapjunkie88 June 26, 2012
I hope the rumors that GH will actually bring a few other OLTL characters on for arcs (hello, Viki, Clint, Dorian, and Nathalie!).
Because those who did were received so well? I’d rather see GH characters like Bobbie Spencer, Lesley Webber, Lucy Coe or Dillon Quartermaine. Believe it or not this show has some great and rich characters too. While I’m ready to accept these few faces from Llanview, I don’t need more people coming on that have no history on that show. There are actually GH viewers who were NOT watching OLTL. And if more OLTL characters come on, for short arcs or whatever … why should those people care? Why should they bother to watch them anymore? I feel for the fans of AMC and OLTL. Honestly I do. But bringing on characters from these shows that already have a rich history which GH fans no nothing about won’t do justice to any of the shows. It’s okay to have these three, four characters on GH. I’ve accepted that. But that should be enough. We don’t need the people of Llanview in Port Charles or even re-building sets for them. That’s just too much and it will end in a lot of complains from GH viewers again. Log in to Reply giogio June 26, 2012 I am starting to wonder about conflict of interests with dvring – but I still have all my vcrs hooked up plus the dvrs and I will tape if i have to. at least with taping we were able to save stuff. Now if the dvr goes they give you another one and all that you had saved is lost. Dont get me started, thats another story. But Im glad its staying and they can all put that in their pipes and smoke it!! Log in to Reply SwanQueen59 June 26, 2012 soapfan616-We can only pray. Gee whiz. I never thought I’d be one to pray for the health and well being of a soap opera and all the talented people who’s job it is to bring it to life. I’m thrilled that GH will inherit the 2:00 PM slot. I’ll say it again. Even when I have difficulties understanding the direction the writers have them going, I will continue to watch for the actors who put themselves out there, day in, day out… 0:) Log in to Reply liason4real June 26, 2012 I know it’s good news for GH, but OLTL was in that 2 PM EST time slot for almost 44 years. It’s a shame that ABC/Disney tore apart their soap line up for cheap redundancy shows that are already available on TV. Log in to Reply shirls429 June 26, 2012 Awesome news about GH staying on just with a new time slot.❤ Log in to Reply The_Moustache June 26, 2012 this is a good news indeed! now bring in some more OLTL/AMC characters to the show ASAP!!! Log in to Reply SoapArmageddon June 26, 2012 If Days’ ratings suffer, it will be because it’s a crappy show and not because of competition from GH. There were times when it did very well against OLTL in that same timeslot. I think we’re forgetting that in previous years there were three shows (one from each network) competing in each timeslot. It was the best ones that usually grabbed the highest ratings. Log in to Reply The_Moustache June 26, 2012 my wish list for OLTL/AMC characters moving to Port Charles, since Frank Valentini has PROMISED fans that he will create a OLTL/AMC/GH super-show this fall. AMC: David Hayward Kendall Hart Greenlee Smythe Ryan Lavery Bianca Montgomery Jackson Montgomery OLTL: Viki Lord Tina Lord Cord Roberts David Vickers Blair Cramer Kelly Cramer unfortunately that means GH characters will have to leave, i’m fine with that and here are the disposable ones: Alexis Davis Molly Lansing Tracy Quartermaine Luke Spencer Sonny Corinthos Elizabeth Webber Carly Benson Log in to Reply giogio June 26, 2012 THE MOUSTACHE – these are the people you want gone??? Love you to death so Im not going to chew you up. Come on, whyyyy — give me an explanation photo to make my day. 8) Log in to Reply TV Gord June 26, 2012 When/where did Valentini make THAT promise? We were just on there. I dont know how to do all the quotes and stuff. Log in to Reply marybee50 June 26, 2012 In Maryland where I live,Days is on at 1pm,in the middle of Y&R and then B&B.Gh move won’t affect the ratings here. When I’m home,I watch the first half of Y&R live, then tape the rest.I watch Days live when I can,but dvr it the rest of the time. Good luck to GH,hope it helps. Log in to Reply TV Gord June 26, 2012 Thanks, giogio. I should’ve known. That was IN NO WAY a “promise” from FV. “Maybe you haven’t seen the last of them. Keep your fingers crossed.” How is that a promise, The_Moustache??? Log in to Reply MsAgentProvocateur1 June 27, 2012 Wouldn’t it great if GH ends up taking viewers from The Talk?? It would be some sort of cosmic justice– SOAP STYLE! Log in to Reply pjc722 June 27, 2012 WOW! I am amazed that they are doing this! GOOD FOR SOAPS, GOOD FOR ABC, GREAT FOR GENERAL HOSPITAL!! Don’t screw with up Cartini! But great great news Log in to Reply CHRISTOPHER June 27, 2012 General Hospital will be Cancelled after next year 50th Anniversary party and show and in few months the show will be cancelled….2pm is not a great time slot for GH nor ABC…Look at OLTL how great that show was and had better ratings than GH…..I know people will watch Y&R,B&B than DOOL and aftwerward GH…..AMC should have still be on the air with OLTL…GH is really on the support after 2pm….it will be gone..it sadly a show that was once a #1 is now dead last! I lost faith on this show and I have 11 friends and i that watches the show together, we gave it up last week. And I know that GH will always be known for Luke & Laura and the real Helena Cassidine…(LIz taylor) that was the best of time, now is a waste of time…. Log in to Reply Mets82 June 27, 2012 I think its great that GH stays on the air. I do have a couple of questions. If The Chew and GH do well in there timeslots, what happens if Good Afternoon America takes off as well as Katie? So would the lineup be like this? 1pm The Chew 2pm General Hospital 3pm Godd Afternoon America 4pm Katie Log in to Reply The_Moustache June 27, 2012 GH’s real competition will be from DAYS imo. The Talk is such a non-factor. right now the only DAYS has going for it is the EJ/Will possible relationship. other than that the other storylines are snoooooozers. Log in to Reply CHRISTOPHER June 27, 2012 GH will be CANCELLED after the celebration ofthe 50th Anniversary and they will have a stiff competition with DOOL!!! DOOL will beat GH in the ratings and will have a weak ratings when Good Morning Afternoon America will go off the air! The line up is 1pm the Chew 2pm General Hospital 3pm Katie Poor Lineups…….DOOL will beat GH in the ratings! Log in to Reply doodleynoodle June 27, 2012 Unfortunately, OLTL was bleeding out for a long time before Cartini took the wheel. They were the red-headed stepchild of ABC for years. Once you lose viewers it’s extremely difficult to ever get them back. I was a longtime OLTL viewer that never went back. Same with AMC. Should either of them been cancelled? Heck to the no but I have a limited amount of time in my week and there was never that hook that drew me back in. Soaps have to have at least one storyline that fans are passionate about and all the other storylines evolve from that energy, criss-cross, intersect, and eventually stand alone. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been happening. They need to turn loose with the chemistry and quit trying to force mediocre pairings down our throats. One of the appeals of soaps is that they are available day in, day out all year long. We know all the DETAILS, brothers and sisters! When they started screwing with that, the shows lost all credibility and respect. It takes time to build the stories up to a place where they have a life and can create that excitement. The kind that has you busting through the door, making a quick dinner, and plopping down in front of the television every night to catch up with what happened that day because the show just that good. I’m not there yet, but I can see progress. I just hope the current regime has enough time to do all of that and build the viewership back up at the same time. When I’m inspired enough to invest in a new DVR to replace the broken one…you will know we’ve arrived. Log in to Reply GHFan76 June 27, 2012 Glad to hear this news, but still “cautiously” optimistic! Will be interesting to see how it all plays out. Log in to Reply The_Moustache June 27, 2012 just wondering, what happens if Good Afternoon America is a ratings bonanza?? where does that leave GH since ABC loves The Chew and it’s their darling? :\ Log in to Reply GHteenybopper June 27, 2012 Wait a minute, the Chew still hasn’t been cancelled?? What in the entire hell? I’m happy that gh is getting a new time slot instead of being cancelled, I hope the other shows tank and GH gets spared another year. No matter how much I may disagree with the way the show is written at times, I’ll still watch. Log in to Reply Mets82 June 27, 2012 I understand that soaps are expensive to produce but I just think its everything in tv is changing. I mean I believe whether its daytime or primetime that reality tv is taking over. I mean I feel like these people in charge have no respect for anything of the past. They just dont care and thats ashame because soaps are paying the price for no reason. I mean do soaps do THAT BAD that they have to cancel them?? I think whatever they replace soaps with, will do the same ratings so whats the problem? Log in to Reply radrobd June 27, 2012 “I mean do soaps do THAT BAD that they have to cancel them?? I think whatever they replace soaps with, will do the same ratings so whats the problem?” The problem is the cost. Soaps are very expensive to produce. Talk shows and other shows cost about 50% less. So if the ratings are the same, as you say, economically, it would make sense to produce the cheaper program rather than the expensive one to maximize profits. Like it or not, ABC is a business. It’s show business, not show friends. Log in to Reply JohnnyLover June 27, 2012
This sucks in a way because I usually watch Days at that time, if I’m home. ABC probably did this because they want GH’s ratings to go down so they can cancel it in a year. Log in to Reply gato1 June 27, 2012 Please stop encouraging the “moustache”! Log in to Reply gdwitch June 29, 2012 Here in CA, Days is on at that time. Way to go making 2 soaps compete with each other and splitting viewers (DVR’s don’t count in the ratings). Now it will look like even less people are watching. Log in to Reply Leave a Reply Cancel Reply You must be logged in to post a comment.
