It's OFFICIAL: General Hospital Moving to 2 pm EST, Starting Sept 10

ABC soap fans can breathe a momentary sigh of relief. The Mouse House has officially announced plans to move General Hospital to 2 pm EST. In a decidely modern twist, the news was broken on GH's Facebook page. See the statement below:

Happy Tuesday GH Fans! We’re letting you know first - beginning MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 10th, we’re moving into our new time slot at 2:00 p.m. ET|1:00 p.m. PT|CT on ABC. You'll be able to catch all the intrigue and excitement of Port Charles one hour earlier! We equally excited about General Hospital's 50th anniversary on ABC next year.Share this news with your friends and family and make sure to tune in to General Hospital every day.

As previously reported, Katie Couric's upcoming, syndicated talk show, Katie, will inherit GH's current timeslot on ABC-owned and operated stations this fall. Congrats to the cast and crew of General Hospital—led by showrunner Frank Valentini and head writer Ron Carlivati—on the Herculean effort they've put forth these past few months to turn this soap opera around. I'm certainly impressed with the changes, and from what I hear, so are the two people who really count — Anne Sweeney and Vicki Dummer!

Wouldn't it great if GH ends up taking viewers from The Talk?? It would be some sort of cosmic justice-- SOAP STYLE!

GH's real competition will be from DAYS imo.

The Talk is such a non-factor.

right now the only DAYS has going for it is the EJ/Will possible relationship. other than that the other storylines are snoooooozers.

General Hospital will be Cancelled after next year 50th Anniversary party and show and in few months the show will be cancelled....2pm is not a great time slot for GH nor ABC...Look at OLTL how great that show was and had better ratings than GH.....I know people will watch Y&R,B&B than DOOL and aftwerward GH.....AMC should have still be on the air with OLTL...GH is really on the support after 2pm....it will be gone..it sadly a show that was once a #1 is now dead last! I lost faith on this show and I have 11 friends and i that watches the show together, we gave it up last week. And I know that GH will always be known for Luke & Laura and the real Helena Cassidine...(LIz taylor) that was the best of time, now is a waste of time....

I think its great that GH stays on the air. I do have a couple of questions. If The Chew and GH do well in there timeslots, what happens if Good Afternoon America takes off as well as Katie?

So would the lineup be like this?

1pm The Chew
2pm General Hospital
3pm Godd Afternoon America
4pm Katie

GH will be CANCELLED after the celebration ofthe 50th Anniversary and they will have a stiff competition with DOOL!!! DOOL will beat GH in the ratings and will have a weak ratings when Good Morning Afternoon America will go off the air!
The line up is

1pm the Chew
2pm General Hospital
3pm Katie

Poor Lineups.......DOOL will beat GH in the ratings!

Unfortunately, OLTL was bleeding out for a long time before Cartini took the wheel. They were the red-headed stepchild of ABC for years. Once you lose viewers it's extremely difficult to ever get them back. I was a longtime OLTL viewer that never went back. Same with AMC. Should either of them been cancelled? Heck to the no but I have a limited amount of time in my week and there was never that hook that drew me back in.

Soaps have to have at least one storyline that fans are passionate about and all the other storylines evolve from that energy, criss-cross, intersect, and eventually stand alone. Unfortunately, that hasn't been happening. They need to turn loose with the chemistry and quit trying to force mediocre pairings down our throats.

One of the appeals of soaps is that they are available day in, day out all year long. We know all the DETAILS, brothers and sisters! When they started screwing with that, the shows lost all credibility and respect. It takes time to build the stories up to a place where they have a life and can create that excitement. The kind that has you busting through the door, making a quick dinner, and plopping down in front of the television every night to catch up with what happened that day because the show just that good. I'm not there yet, but I can see progress. I just hope the current regime has enough time to do all of that and build the viewership back up at the same time.

When I'm inspired enough to invest in a new DVR to replace the broken one...you will know we've arrived. Smile

Glad to hear this news, but still "cautiously" optimistic! Will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

just wondering, what happens if Good Afternoon America is a ratings bonanza??

where does that leave GH since ABC loves The Chew and it's their darling?

Wait a minute, the Chew still hasn't been cancelled?? What in the entire hell? I'm happy that gh is getting a new time slot instead of being cancelled, I hope the other shows tank and GH gets spared another year. No matter how much I may disagree with the way the show is written at times, I'll still watch.

I understand that soaps are expensive to produce but I just think its everything in tv is changing. I mean I believe whether its daytime or primetime that reality tv is taking over. I mean I feel like these people in charge have no respect for anything of the past. They just dont care and thats ashame because soaps are paying the price for no reason. I mean do soaps do THAT BAD that they have to cancel them?? I think whatever they replace soaps with, will do the same ratings so whats the problem?

The problem is the cost. Soaps are very expensive to produce. Talk shows and other shows cost about 50% less. So if the ratings are the same, as you say, economically, it would make sense to produce the cheaper program rather than the expensive one to maximize profits. Like it or not, ABC is a business. It's show business, not show friends.

This sucks in a way because I usually watch Days at that time, if I'm home. It will put two of the 4 remaining soaps head to head in a lot of markets. On the other hand wouldn't it be the coolest if NBC moved Days to 2:00 against Gumby? We would see just how popular talk show premiere number 92 of the 2012 season really is. I would rather watch Dr. Oz & all things medical makes me want to hurl.

Days is on at that time in my area too.
ABC probably did this because they want GH's ratings to go down so they can cancel it in a year.

my wish list for OLTL/AMC characters moving to Port Charles, since Frank Valentini has PROMISED fans that he will create a OLTL/AMC/GH super-show this fall.

AMC:
David Hayward
Kendall Hart
Greenlee Smythe
Ryan Lavery
Bianca Montgomery
Jackson Montgomery

OLTL:
Viki Lord
Tina Lord
Cord Roberts
David Vickers
Blair Cramer
Kelly Cramer

unfortunately that means GH characters will have to leave, i'm fine with that and here are the disposable ones:

Alexis Davis
Molly Lansing
Tracy Quartermaine
Luke Spencer
Sonny Corinthos
Elizabeth Webber
Carly Benson

I would rather GH be canceled then see your wishlist. It HATED AMC & OLTL and do NOT want to see any of the BAD ACTORS from those shows coming over and RUINING GH with their BAD ACTING.GH had the best ACTORS/ACTRESSES and characters on all of daytime BEFORE the bad actors from OLTL came over. That is why GH won most of the EMMYS and OLTL & AMC did not win shit.GH desereved to win OLTL & AMC did not. Those shows got canceled because they were bad with bad writing and BAD ACTING NOT for any other reason. That is why i think GH will be canceled next year and i doubt any of the CRAP and BAD ACTING from the OLTL crew will be good enough to even make it to the EMMY nominations next year.

Here in CA, Days is on at that time. Way to go making 2 soaps compete with each other and splitting viewers (DVR's don't count in the ratings). Now it will look like even less people are watching.
