HomeTVThe Today ShowIt’s Official: Savannah Guthrie in as New Today Co-Anchor! Jamey Giddens June 29, 2012 16 Comments NBC has confirmed Savannah Guthrie's promotion to co-anchor of The Today Show with The Hollywood Reporter. This comes after a week of intense media scrutiny over Today's decision to remove Ann Curry from the seat next to Matt Lauer. Here's what NBC News Prexy Steve Capus told THR about Guthrie: "She’s anchored for Brian [Williams] on NBC Nightly News, moderated for David [Gregory] on Meet the Press, co-hosted the 9 a.m. hour of Today, reported for Rock Center and Dateline, and provided legal insights in our Supreme Court Special Reports – and that was all within the last week," Capus continued. "She's earned the trust of the news community, her colleagues and our viewers alike." Do you think Guthrie will prove to be a good fit opposite Lauer, or would you rather have continued watching Curry as you sip your morning joe? Sound off in the comments! Log in to Reply pumpkin June 29, 2012 I don’t think it had anything to do with Curry. I think that ABC snagged George S and he seems to be draw. Yesterday it was Matt and now it is George. I don’t watch Today or ABC in morning but I can’t help but notice more buzz in regards to George and his gang. I watch Morning Joe most of the time. I am political junky. Log in to Reply SoapyBitch June 30, 2012 I was really hoping for Kathie Lee because what Matt Lauer needs is a drunk nearly memaw in his face daily. I don’t watch Today regularly, but Matt seems so dour and douchey. He has the same stick in the mud vibe I got from Bryant Gumbel. Log in to Reply jphelps June 30, 2012 Today lost viewers in 2009 and 2010. Exactly who was to blame for that. My vote would have been to dump that pompous ass Matt Lauer as he was the one who orchestrated this change so he could get his mistress in as cohost. What the hell is that black thing she’s wearing? If you don’t have the guts to wear a sexy dress, don’t! And Al, and that other old guy that does the birthdays, both need to be sent out to pasture. [quote=jphelps]Today lost viewers in 2009 and 2010. Exactly who was to blame for that. He must have just about the biggest one on television…EGO that is. Log in to Reply marybee50 June 30, 2012 Savannah used to be on msnbc with Chuck Todd. She was really good.I think she has a law background. She should not be a co-anchor.She should be a top reporter or anaylist. I think that was the problem with Ann Curry also. These are reporters they stick in a fluffy co-anchor spot. That was the problem with Katie Couric. She was suited for that not,not being a serious news reporter. I wish her well, but would rather see her on msnbc again. Log in to Reply Chelley62 July 1, 2012 I like her but I thought it was tacky to do it so close to the end of Ann’s tenure. Further, she is pretty serious and you have to be able to poke fun of yourself in the anchor position and I haven’t seen that from her (yet). I wish they had looked outside the Network. I also liked Ann but not as anchor but she was not the problem IMO. The problem lays with them practically giving up any kind of hard news and interviewing every freaking Duggar, Lohan & Kardashian on the planet over and over. Also pushing other network shows and Universal movies ad nauseum. Someone with history and a good grasp of what it takes to co-anchor a television News Magazine would have also worked. Show’s the Today Show, Good Morning America etc. are television news magazines. They editorialize what is going on the country and the world. And for those who know, their topics can range from politics, fashion, cooking, relationships Entertainment to Health and beauty issues. So you need a personality that cover a wide range of topics. It is also necessary for the co-anchor to have chemistry with Matt Lauer. Even for those of you who don’t have a good liking toward Matt he is the male face of morning news magazines and has some legendary interviews like when he confronted Tom Cruise when he talked about depression and medications or his regular TV romps with Anne Colture where he would always call out her lies and misstatements. I don’t think that adding a 4th hour has helped much, but I would also say that their needs to be an adjustment in the format. Fact is people are getting on Youtube and creating their own editorialized news magazines and racking in millions of views. Log in to Reply MsAgentProvocateur1 July 1, 2012 Someone mentioned Sue Simmons, whom I grew up with and love but it doesn’t make much sense since Sue was pretty much put out to pasture by the local NBC news affiliate in NYC. But Sue Simmons is never boring and can adapt to the tenure of any interviewee or segment. Too bad the TV media is so ageist. Log in to Reply RealityCheck 33 July 2, 2012 She’ll crash and burn like Deborah Norville. People will associate her with the horrible treatment of Ann Curry by NBC and Matt Lauer, who is an arrogant ass and turd. He cheats on his wife with other NBC talent. Disgusting.
