Blowing Salem U.S.A. to kingdom come appears to have been a smart move for NBC's Days of Our Lives. The sudser posted impressive ratings gains the week of July 23-27. (Source: Soap Opera Network)

DAYSaster

DAYS went up 103,000 total viewers. The serial also inched up one-tenth of a point in households, women 18-49 and among W18-34!

In story, Melanie's (Molly Burnett) kidnapping lark came to an explosive end, as the combination of sparks, gasy tunnels and cheesy villains proved to be combustible. Above ground, most Salemites were gathered for Brady (Eric Martsolf) and Madison's (Sarah Brown) wedding, however the missing groom was off saving Melanie.

EJ's (James Scott) mother/son paramours, Sami (Alison Sweeney) and Will (Chandler Massey), were busy helping him see his tykes, before fleeing charges of "murdering" Stefano (Joe Mascolo). Roman (Josh Taylor) got there with Lucas (Bryan Dattilo) just in time to yell for Sami to "GIT DOOOOWN!" Okay, he didn't, but I wish he had.

As the explosion ripped through Salem, fair Samantha found herself dangling over the edge, Marlena's (Deidre Hall) plate of appetizers went flying and a pregnant Nicole (Arianne Zucker) was a' clutchin' her belly. We'll have to wait until DAYS resumes airing after the Summer Olympics to find out who survives. However, since news broke like 17 months ago that Brown, Matt Ashford (Jack) an Ian Buchanan (Ian) were all fired, my money is on one or more of them not making it to next year's Day of DAYS fan event.

The Young and the Restless dropped 60,000 total viewers over the previous week, but went up one-tenth of a point where it really counts, among W18-49. In households and among W18-34, the CBS sudser held steady.

Billy (Billy Miller) fired Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) from Restless Style, but not before telling her he planned to run a story about her hit-and-run drama. The cocky, media mogul also informed his ex-employee that her legal plight would be the subject of the premiere episode of Restless Style's television series.

When Nick (Joshua Morrow) found out what Billy was planning, he promptly headed over to RS and punched his brother-in-law so hard those dollar signs that sit where Billy's eyeballs are supposed to be temporarily changed to band aids. Of course Nick's Rocky Balboa routine was caught on tape, which Billy used in promos for his new show. God I love Billy Abbott.

Cricket (Lauralee Bell) was determined to find out what went down between Tim Reid (Aaron Lustig) and Phyllis. Heather (Jennifer Landon) was just as determined for her father to ditch The Bug as his attorney. Heather told Paul (Doug Davidson) she was worried Cricket was so focused on taking down Phyllis, it would jeopardize his case.

Adam (Michael Muhney) bought Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) the old, poorly-decorated mausoleum where Genevieve (Genie Francis) used to live. Let's hope they have the maid bleach down that parapet, as it likely has some of Colin's (Tristan Rogers) dried blood on it, from the time that crazy wench bit him. Speaking of Colin, Cane (Daniel Goddard) and Lily (Christel Khalil) were still trying to figure out who was sending them creepy gifts.

The Abbott siblings continued to bicker over Jabot and Beauty of Nature; Abby (Marcy Rylan) and Carmine (Marco Dapper) had more public sex and a pool party and Neil (Kristoff St. John) refused to let Sofia (Julia Pace Mitchell) take little Nicodemus to New York. Oh Neil, let 'em go...

The Bold and the Beautiful lost 91,000 total viewers over the previous week. B&B also fell one-tenth of a point in households, yet held steady in the demos.

Marcus (Texas Battle) was arrested on his honeymoon night for TEXTING WHILE DRIVING. Hope (Kimberly Matula) forgave Liam for "kissing" Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood), not knowing he'd really given her stepsister the dry humping of her life.

Hope wasn't in the dark for very long, since neither Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) nor Ridge (Ron Moss) seemed to know how to delete a file. I see why Forrester Creations is always in so much financial trouble.

The TEXTING WHILE DRIVING storyline is so heavy-handed and filled with bad dialogue that it's cringe-inducing to watch. As for the latest installment in Hope/Liam/Steffy, it would have been much more compelling had Liam and Steffy actually had sex. At least then Steffy could be carrying Liam's child, just as Hope decides to inevitably forgive him again.

When did making out replace actual sex on this soap? First, all Steffy and Bill (Don Diamont) did during their "affair" was go to third base, now this. If all I wanted was heavy petting, I'd watch Saved By The Bell re-runs.

General Hospital went down 13,000 total viewers over the previous week. The soap also dipped one-tenth of a point in W18-34, yet held steady in households and W18-49.

Todd (Roger Howarth) learned it was Johnny (Brandon Barash), not Connie (Kelly Sullivan), who was responsible for the death of Starr's (Kristen Alderson) family. When he confronted the recovering mobster, Johnny revealed he knew Todd had switched Sam's (Kelly Monaco) very much alive baby with Tea's (Florencia Lozano) dead one. Let the Manning/Zacchara Cold War begin!

Heather Webber (Robin Mattson) injected Olivia (Lisa LoCicero) with enough LSD to keep Charlie Sheen 'winning' until 2016. At the hospital, Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) ripped his Ma's boyfriend, Steve (Scott Reeves) a new hole for not protecting her from his cuckoo mother.

Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) showed up at the cabin to rescue Luke (Anthony Geary), who had to smell like a dead bear by that point. Heather arrived, tangled with Anna and got knocked the freak out! Later, the nut job grabbed a gun and fired off a round, hitting Luke.

Once she was in custody, Heather must have thought she was on Celebrity Apprentice: Whack Jobs Edition, because she played her Trump card. Robin (Kimberly McCullough) is alive and at Ferncliff! At first Anna didn't believe her, but the thought of her daughter possibly still being among the living prompted her to investigate.

Anna headed to the funny farm, not realizng Liz's (Rebecca Herbst) seemingly-sweet, Aussie boyfriend, Dr. Ewen (Nathin Butler), was frying Robin's brains like chopped up onions and bell peppers in a skillet.

Elsewhere in Port Chuck, Carly (Laura Wright) and Spinelli (Bradford Anderson) were trying to play cupid for JaSam. General Hospital has been just as action-packed and fun to watch as some of my primetime faves like Dallas and Political Animals this summer. If you are a lapsed Port Chuckster, now is the time to tune back in! See you next Ratings.
