HomeTVDays of Our LivesRatings, Rants and Raves: ‘DAYSaster’ Works For NBC Soap Jamey Giddens August 6, 2012 14 Comments Blowing Salem U.S.A. to kingdom come appears to have been a smart move for NBC's Days of Our Lives. The sudser posted impressive ratings gains the week of July 23-27. (Source: Soap Opera Network) DAYS went up 103,000 total viewers. The serial also inched up one-tenth of a point in households, women 18-49 and among W18-34! In story, Melanie's (Molly Burnett) kidnapping lark came to an explosive end, as the combination of sparks, gasy tunnels and cheesy villains proved to be combustible. Above ground, most Salemites were gathered for Brady (Eric Martsolf) and Madison's (Sarah Brown) wedding, however the missing groom was off saving Melanie. EJ's (James Scott) mother/son paramours, Sami (Alison Sweeney) and Will (Chandler Massey), were busy helping him see his tykes, before fleeing charges of "murdering" Stefano (Joe Mascolo). Roman (Josh Taylor) got there with Lucas (Bryan Dattilo) just in time to yell for Sami to "GIT DOOOOWN!" Okay, he didn't, but I wish he had. As the explosion ripped through Salem, fair Samantha found herself dangling over the edge, Marlena's (Deidre Hall) plate of appetizers went flying and a pregnant Nicole (Arianne Zucker) was a' clutchin' her belly. We'll have to wait until DAYS resumes airing after the Summer Olympics to find out who survives. However, since news broke like 17 months ago that Brown, Matt Ashford (Jack) an Ian Buchanan (Ian) were all fired, my money is on one or more of them not making it to next year's Day of DAYS fan event. The Young and the Restless dropped 60,000 total viewers over the previous week, but went up one-tenth of a point where it really counts, among W18-49. In households and among W18-34, the CBS sudser held steady. Billy (Billy Miller) fired Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) from Restless Style, but not before telling her he planned to run a story about her hit-and-run drama. The cocky, media mogul also informed his ex-employee that her legal plight would be the subject of the premiere episode of Restless Style's television series. When Nick (Joshua Morrow) found out what Billy was planning, he promptly headed over to RS and punched his brother-in-law so hard those dollar signs that sit where Billy's eyeballs are supposed to be temporarily changed to band aids. Of course Nick's Rocky Balboa routine was caught on tape, which Billy used in promos for his new show. God I love Billy Abbott. Cricket (Lauralee Bell) was determined to find out what went down between Tim Reid (Aaron Lustig) and Phyllis. Heather (Jennifer Landon) was just as determined for her father to ditch The Bug as his attorney. Heather told Paul (Doug Davidson) she was worried Cricket was so focused on taking down Phyllis, it would jeopardize his case. Adam (Michael Muhney) bought Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) the old, poorly-decorated mausoleum where Genevieve (Genie Francis) used to live. Let's hope they have the maid bleach down that parapet, as it likely has some of Colin's (Tristan Rogers) dried blood on it, from the time that crazy wench bit him. Speaking of Colin, Cane (Daniel Goddard) and Lily (Christel Khalil) were still trying to figure out who was sending them creepy gifts. The Abbott siblings continued to bicker over Jabot and Beauty of Nature; Abby (Marcy Rylan) and Carmine (Marco Dapper) had more public sex and a pool party and Neil (Kristoff St. John) refused to let Sofia (Julia Pace Mitchell) take little Nicodemus to New York. Oh Neil, let 'em go… The Bold and the Beautiful lost 91,000 total viewers over the previous week. B&B also fell one-tenth of a point in households, yet held steady in the demos. Marcus (Texas Battle) was arrested on his honeymoon night for TEXTING WHILE DRIVING. Hope (Kimberly Matula) forgave Liam for "kissing" Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood), not knowing he'd really given her stepsister the dry humping of her life. Hope wasn't in the dark for very long, since neither Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) nor Ridge (Ron Moss) seemed to know how to delete a file. I see why Forrester Creations is always in so much financial trouble. The TEXTING WHILE DRIVING storyline is so heavy-handed and filled with bad dialogue that it's cringe-inducing to watch. As for the latest installment in Hope/Liam/Steffy, it would have been much more compelling had Liam and Steffy actually had sex. At least then Steffy could be carrying Liam's child, just as Hope decides to inevitably forgive him again. When did making out replace actual sex on this soap? First, all Steffy and Bill (Don Diamont) did during their "affair" was go to third base, now this. If all I wanted was heavy petting, I'd watch Saved By The Bell re-runs. General Hospital went down 13,000 total viewers over the previous week. The soap also dipped one-tenth of a point in W18-34, yet held steady in households and W18-49. Todd (Roger Howarth) learned it was Johnny (Brandon Barash), not Connie (Kelly Sullivan), who was responsible for the death of Starr's (Kristen Alderson) family. When he confronted the recovering mobster, Johnny revealed he knew Todd had switched Sam's (Kelly Monaco) very much alive baby with Tea's (Florencia Lozano) dead one. Let the Manning/Zacchara Cold War begin! Heather Webber (Robin Mattson) injected Olivia (Lisa LoCicero) with enough LSD to keep Charlie Sheen 'winning' until 2016. At the hospital, Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) ripped his Ma's boyfriend, Steve (Scott Reeves) a new hole for not protecting her from his cuckoo mother. Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) showed up at the cabin to rescue Luke (Anthony Geary), who had to smell like a dead bear by that point. Heather arrived, tangled with Anna and got knocked the freak out! Later, the nut job grabbed a gun and fired off a round, hitting Luke. Once she was in custody, Heather must have thought she was on Celebrity Apprentice: Whack Jobs Edition, because she played her Trump card. Robin (Kimberly McCullough) is alive and at Ferncliff! At first Anna didn't believe her, but the thought of her daughter possibly still being among the living prompted her to investigate. Anna headed to the funny farm, not realizng Liz's (Rebecca Herbst) seemingly-sweet, Aussie boyfriend, Dr. Ewen (Nathin Butler), was frying Robin's brains like chopped up onions and bell peppers in a skillet. Elsewhere in Port Chuck, Carly (Laura Wright) and Spinelli (Bradford Anderson) were trying to play cupid for JaSam. General Hospital has been just as action-packed and fun to watch as some of my primetime faves like Dallas and Political Animals this summer. If you are a lapsed Port Chuckster, now is the time to tune back in! See you next Ratings. 14 Responses soapjunkie88 August 6, 2012 My guess is that the powers that be at DAYS thought we forgot who they fired. LOL And it really does feel like over a year ago that the firings where announced. I’m still hoping that there is some kind of surprise left for us. Like Gabi dying or something. Isn’t it tragic that Phyllis still walks free, can go to a wedding and have the love of her dull husband, while Paul is locked up in an orange jumpsuit for shooting his psychopath of a son in the shoulder!? This injustice shows just about everything that is wrong with this show. I really hope that Jill Farren Phelps redecorates as soon as she gets to Y&R. The sets need a makeover – and so do some characters. Adam is unrecognizable, so are Sharon and Chloe while others seem to have no identity at all. B&B could save a lot of money. The only actors they really need on contract are Scott Clifton, Kim Matula and Jacqui McInnes Wood. -.- I LOVE GH and the week in question was pure gold. That’s a soap opera. Right there! That’s how you make it happen Brad Bell & Sony people. WATCH!!!! I wonder what GH could do rating wise if they’d have a better lead-in. The show would get extremely close to B&B IMO. Log in to Reply marybee50 August 6, 2012 On B&B you are so right. If Thomas has found proof of Marcus’ innocence, like the ending of Friday suggests, why in the hell was this story even shown. And,like I said in another post for Liam/Hope/Steffy,SSDD. I have high hopes(perhaps I shouldn’t) for Days. The last week they were on the writing and stories seem to be tighter and more fluid.Eilleen D says the writing for her return is great,so we will see. Log in to Reply Yoryla August 6, 2012 I am so proud and happy for DAYS. They truly deserved the increase in ratings; the explosion was extremely good! It was also very good that the actual explosion didn’t last very long, it was like 50 seconds in the end. IT made it all the more realistic. BRAVA! Log in to Reply ER Writer August 6, 2012 marybee – it would be nice if thomas withheld the evidence and let Marcus go to jail for the summer in order to get closer to Dayzee again. But then we would be watching a show that didn’t play like a merry go round. Jamey – Heather Webber (Robin Mattson) injected Olivia (Lisa LoCicero) with enough LSD to keep Charlie Sheen ‘winning’ until 2016. /// Neil (Kristoff St. John) refused to let Sofia (Julia Pace Mitchell) take little Nicodemus to New York. Neil, let ‘em go… LMAO — I am a lapsed GH’er but I’m intrigued by Robin and the Jax Brothers’ returns:) I think I will tune back in. Am I going to have to fast forward NuKristina though? If DAYS wants me back as a viewer they need to go for the gusto with EJ/Sami/Will. What’s their trinity squish name – EJamill? Log in to Reply GHFan76 August 6, 2012 I honestly thought this week was the one which would give GH that much needed boost, but alas they lost viewers. Log in to Reply marybee50 August 6, 2012 ER Writer-nice squish name for EJ/Sami/Will. AS for B&B-I’m really trying hard to find a reason to watch. It may be a merry go round, but it has only one horse. Y&R has become so much more entertaining. Why do writers always wait until they know their jobs are in jeopardy to fix things.Today’s episode is great so far.Love watching Boozy Sharon and the Righteous Nikki and family. Log in to Reply ER Writer August 6, 2012 Marybee – thanks! I can’t tell you how many times I have turned off B&B in the middle of the episode, (or called Liam a douche). I can’t root for anyone in the triangle because they are all so sad. And they’ve turned Brooke into a one note shrew! What’s so frustrating about it is that the elements of good soap are THERE but it’s just on a loop. Maybe I will also try Y&R again, I was waiting for the new stuff to start airing. I haven’t watched since Sharon met farmer Sam. Log in to Reply bishbay August 6, 2012 In all seriousness, if Days wanted to get people talking again a triangle involving Sami, her ex- and her SON (especially since all three are established/core characters familiar to pretty much all lapsed viewers) would be the way to go. But I think it’s a bit too rich for Mr. Corday’s blood. Shame. Log in to Reply brettyboy August 6, 2012 DAYS: Great to see it improving its ratings, it deserves to, even without the DAYSASTER in my opinion. B&B: Totally agree, what a pile of shite this show is at the moment. All the storylines revolve around characters (Marcus, Dayzee, Hope and Liam) who I couldn’t care less about and they are just dragging on and on and on… GH: Why on earth did this drop in the ratings? It’s the best of the 4 by miles! Y&R: Improving…. Log in to Reply blake3b August 6, 2012 Great for Days! It needed those ratings before the weeks long break. Hopefully the new writers work will be kicking in when it comes back on after the olympics! Log in to Reply foxschmidt August 6, 2012 Let’s just be real and all acknowledge that the Sami/EJ/Will love triangle *IS* what is going to save daytime soaps. Many may find it bizarre/strange, but it will generate enough publicity to reignite interest in soaps and keep them on the air for another 2 years. Plus, it would attract all those women who write slash fiction and were obsessed with Queer as Folk. Log in to Reply curacaoman August 6, 2012 I really don’t understand GH’s ratings! Log in to Reply pferrando August 7, 2012 woo hoo…Y and R up in the coveted demo, just to have JFP come in and work her magic. The writing is so much better, but yes…too little too late. OH! Except Sharon with Vic… Log in to Reply maxsmom August 7, 2012 what if the stolen baby were Alexis, Liz, or Robin’s? Would I be harder on Todd? What if the babynapper were Sonny? Would I think it was a bad but not evil act? I dont know. I love Johnny but the only chance at redemption is Hope alive and well. I cant understand whether it’s Johnny who thinks they committed equal bad acts or RC. Log in to Reply Leave a Reply Cancel Reply You must be logged in to post a comment.
