The Village Voice Digs Up Scientology Recruitment Film Starring Young and Restless Patriarch Michael Fairman

For some time now, The Village Voice has been hammering Scientology, the controversial religion founded by late, science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard. Many of their pieces have centered on Michael Fairman, a former Scientologist, who appears as Kay Chancellor's (Jeanne Cooper) husband Murphy on CBS Daytime's The Young and the Restless.

The newspaper's latest findings is a You Tube clip of what appears to be a recruitment video—allegedly once used by the church—starring Fairman. See the video after the jump!
I didn’t see him ANYWHERE in the video though I didn’t watch it all that carefully. I definitely heard him narrating it, though.
I thought he was the man in the very beginning, almost in silhouette (don’t know if it was intentional to have such shadowy lighting and video quality or if it is the age of the video).

Boy, with so many Hollywood types in Scientology, I thought the production values and acting would’ve been more convincing. I recognized a few of the actors (not famous but those actors one usually sees doing bit parts in a bunch of sitcoms and television shows), I guess the really big names don’t want to act in these recruiting videos.

And the audio of the people commenting on how funny the video is kinds of lends an amusing quality to it all.

Overall, though, my first impression was ‘Yikes’!

It was my understanding that Michael Fairman was a former Scientologist who has spoken out against them, which has caused some tension between him and cast mate and current Scientologist Michelle Stafford. If that’s so, then why is the Village Voice releasing this, which gives the appearance that they’re taking a shot at him?

Didn’t see him? Is that a joke cuz he’s the guy that starts in the very beginning and begins the video! The dude in the white shirt and Mr. Rogers sweater.

Yeah, that was my understanding as well. I hope they at the very least gave him the ‘heads up’ that they wanted to post a video featuring him. It would’ve been best if they got his permission.

Oh cool, good to know. Thanks Jamey. I’ve got to start checking for the Village Voice more often. I used to pick up a copy every week. Although I would get self conscious about all the dominatrix ads in the back of the paper (LOL). Of course, when you read it on the subway nobody really cares anyway.
