The Young and The Restless Places Casting Call For "Vivacious, Energetic, Ambitious" African-American Female

Is diversity once again becoming a priority at CBS Daytime's The Young and the Restless? The sudser that gave us Dru, Neil, Malcolm and Liv in the 90's and 00's has put out another casting call, this time for an African-American female in her mid-20's named "Sally Tate".

According to the casting call, "Sally" is:

Vivacious, energetic, ambitious. She's a mom balancing work and family. She's had her share of tough times, but always bounces back from even the most trying situations. Sexy, romantic, fun-loving, with a delightful sense of humor and an eternal twinkle in her eyes.

Are you excited to see two new characters of color coming to Genoa City? Any fears these casting calls might be smokescreens for recasts of Devon (Bryton James) and/or Lily (Christel Khalil)? Sound off in the comments!

I think it might be a Sophia recast. Why would she recast Lily when Cain and Lily have a decent fanbase? But I can't say that I would be sad to see Christel 'OMGCOLLEEN!' Khalil go.

The fan base is loud, pushy and demanding. Nothing decent about that. I'd like to think TPTB don't write the show to appease certain fan bases. If (God forbid) they are going to beef up the Lily role than they need a stronger actress playing her. The "Lily has cancer" storyline was a complete joke and CK should be canned for that alone.

I'll never forget years ago Jack Smith and Kay Alden started featuring Lily and the gang adnauseum I thought, "my God why haven't they hired a BETTER LILY?" They did that when they decided to beef up the role of Mamie, the Abbott's maid.

The girl has been *front burner* for nearly a DECADE and has not shown one iota of development as an actress. You'd think with all of the powerhouses around her (Jess Walton, Melody Thomas Scott) girl would show some improvement, but I guess not.....

I doubt they'd recast Lily. She (CL) just won an Emmy. This is just the beginning of what a lot of long time fans are fearing...new characters front and center and beloved vets pushed to the back burner. Her and Cain consistently top the polls. What a great way to get new viewers...fire fan favs and recast with unknowns. Huh?

@angrierblackerman: The fanbase is not by any means large. They are just more vocal than others. But the ratings have proven over the years that she is not a necessity for Y&R. You need an Actors Actor to take over the role of Lily.

I actually don't have a problem with them recasting Lily with an African American actress; I'd say, call Davetta Sherwood and bring her back. As for Devon, Bryton is amazing if given descent material, but they haven't done anything with him!!!

They "consistently top the polls" because their prepubescent fan base has lots of time on their hands to vote in said polls hundreds of times.

@pferrando: Those are fan polls. Not network poll testing. There is a difference. Networks have a different system to measure the true popularity of actors and actresses on a soap. They don't rely on polls where a fanbase can flood them. That is not a true sample size of viewers. And I can sure tell you for a show with a Majority of viewers being black women those two are not what came to mind when they were looking for "love in the afternoon..."

Especially not the type of pairing where the age difference is so big that one would have been learning to count when their husband was heading to college.

Could be a daughter for Sarge. More about his backstory.

They wouldn't give a "backstory" to a new hire that no viewer cares about. All of MABs hires will most likely be the first to go.

This. Usually someone like JFP wants to send a message that it's her show now. I'm convinced it's a recast I just want to know if it's Lily or Sophia.

I'll put my money on the female casting call being a Sophia re-cast and the male being a Devon re-cast. Bet ya they're planning to make them a couple.

This might be good for the Winters clan. Tucker could be killed off leaving Devon with the bulk McCall Unlimited. Sophia could get a small share also and she knows the business from the ground up. Devon hires Neil to be CEO since Devon's not ready to run it on his own. They would have a three-way conflict personally (since Sophia is Moses mother, and Neil's former wife) and business wise. They'd have their own Newman Empire- instantly.

It might be bad for the Winters clan if they leave Tucker alive and have him be Mr. High & Mighty Victor II with all the Winters in the same demeaning fashion he's dealt with all the female "business women" since he's arrived in GC.

This is exactly what soaps do when they are hanging on by a thread. Tiic bring in new characters, usually played by actors from cancelled soaps or newbie hair models with dry mouth and reflections of cue cards in their eyes. The writers then create complicated backstories for them (which no one has time to flesh out) that feature long lost wives, children and siblings that no one cares about and that hog precious airtime. For recent examples see the vapid Ford brothers from OLTL and the tiresome saga of Caleb Cortlandt from AMC.

That said, these casting calls sound like recasts of Devon and Sofia to me.

I am waiting to see what happens on Y&R. If good enough changes are made to the show, I may go back as a viewer. I stopped watching the show in 2009 after just watching it for about a year, when they had Sharon a cleptomaniac, and Sabrina's ghost everywhere. The show had become terrible. I like the actors that play Devon and Lily personally and would hate to see them go, especially Bryton. I wish he could have lived longer on the Vampire Diaries, as he was good on the show. I am glad a soap is trying to have diversity, as I keep waiting for it on GH, but so far nothing has changed.

Sofia is NOT in her "mid 20s." She was in a high position as a McCall girl for a long while. She's in her 30s not her 20s. She's about a decade older than Lily.

This all sounds HORRID!!

WHY ARE THEY BRINGING IN NEW CHARACTERS?

And if this is a recast for Lily, then why???? Christel Khalil just won an Emmy for God's sakes! And Lily & Cane are a very popular pairing PLUS Sony loves them. Don't get it at all.

Sony loving this pairing, has been the consensus from all the soap industry blogs/magazines/insiders, which is why I'm having a difficult time believing it's a Lily recast even though it admittedly very much sounds as if it is.

The only other thing I can think of, is that CK is undergoing contract negotiations, and tiic are using the threat of recast as a bargaining tool. IDK.

I think it sounds more like a Sofia recast. Julia Pace Mitchell is 26 which fits with the mid-20's and Sofia is a working Mom unlike Lily. Plus the "sexy, romantic, fun-loving, with a delightful sense of humor and an eternal twinkle in her eyes" fits more with what I think the character of Sofia is supposed to be and not really Lily who has never been known for any sense of humor let alone a delightful one LOL. So my money is on Sofia.

Sorry y'all. Recasting Lily will alienate just as many of us as will be happy for it. She's the original actress in the role and her acting is not bad. Either you like someone or your don't. There are many characters who've been recast with "Actor's Actors" that just don't click. Look at the second Heather, Mac, Harmony, Malcolm, Noah, on and on. I like Lily and hubby and hope they stay. CL had great chemistry with VR as Dru even though I heard they didn't get along. If we are ever going to bring a legacy character back IT NEEDS TO BE DRU. Stop this madness. I'd like to see Josh come and and start to write some hardcore drama and see how this show can shine again with its core cast.

All I want to know is if Billy Miller is staying or leaving.
His contract extension was thru this month.
So what the hell??

I think the current Devon is different enough looking and simply quite good looking enough to be kept around; plus he can act. Just erase those self righteous tendencies he learned from Neil and he'd be just fine.

I kind of doubt this casting call is for a Lily recast. If she's going then she'd just be gone I think.

And I'm afraid it's true. VR will never be back on Y&R. Right or wrong she's just too much of a trouble maker.

@pferrando: Eddie Winslow was no "actor's actor." Eden never was looked at as the type to play a stronger woman so that was a miscast.

Now as for Lily. Davetta Sherwood was the recast for Lily who loved and i'm gonna go there more beloved by African American female viewers than CK. The outrage when she was fired was not something even Sony had expected. Davetta Embodied what most African American women had envisioned for a grown up Lily.

So come on now come on!

Some one please explain to 80 Rockfan how to go in and delete those extra posts. It is very simple to do, even if U just edit them to say, double posts.

Victoria Rowell is the ONLY "vivacious and ambitious" black woman that they need to bring back in her iconic role as Drucilla! All the other AA "leads" that this show has had over the past 5 years have failed dismally. Nia Peeples, Julie Paceless Mitchell, Eva "The Diva"........need I go on? Debbi Morgan is spectacularly talented, but YoHarmony is just a walking punchline. Angell Conwell is alright, but is she even on the show anymore???? This show is never gonna really be as good as it should----and could be--until they bite the bullet and ask her to come back.

And maybe they can get RID of the two duds who are dragging the show down, Julie Paceless Mitchell and Christel "Anemic and Boring" Khalil. Kill three birds with one stone.
