RUMOR REPORT: Is Steve Burton ThisClose to Walking Away From General Hospital?!

Don't shoot the blogger. Multiple sources are telling me that General Hospital leading man Steve Burton is thisclose to leaving the ABC sudser. Burton began playing the role of Alan Quartermaine's (Stuart Damon) illegitimate son Jason in 1991.

In 1995, a car accident caused by his half brother AJ (Sean Kanan) left Jason brain damaged. This led to the character all but cutting ties with the ritzy, dysfunctional Q's and embarking on a life of mob-fueled crime as the wildly popular hitman Jason Morgan.

"Steve and ABC have been negotiating for quite some time and it doesn't look like he's going to stay," says one mole. " It's also no secret he's been talking about taking his family and moving back to Tennessee."

I love Steve Burton and would hate to see him leave, but can you blame him? Aside from the fact now the actors are being treated like the enemy, after being stuck for years, in a boring, insipid storyline with a whining partner, who cant act, and a storyline so bad even the fans start hating you...why stick around. he's been a loyal player for all these years...its a sad ending....

the WORST ACTOR of television...he was a bad actor as a kid and the WORST ACTOR on GH! We don't need him! BRING IN SEAN KANAN who is far better than Steve Burton!

I lost interest in Jason after it became clear to me that what was clearly meant to be a long range story arc would just be permananent. I was like...huh, you mean to tell me that he will never get his memeory back or be Jason Quartermaine again. Huh. What kind of story is that. It ain't compelling. There is no payoff for the fans. Huh. Jason was never meant to stay brain damaged as Jason Morgan. The fact that he has remained so all these years in ridiculous.

The person that said that Frons/Guza srewed up thinking that an brain damaged mob hitman was a romantic lead...ITA...a hit man is NOT a romantic lead, especially when SBu does not have the acting range to make Jason compelling. They had to sacrifice all the other characters integrity and the integrity of the story by making Jason a hero of all things for it to be beleivable. Bsicly he is a gary Stu.

If SBu leaves then I hope that Cartini turn Jason back into the man he was meant to be, Jason Quatermaine, and have him regret his life and killing so much that he voluntarily goes to prison.

Sorry but I think it's time for Jason to ride off in into the sunset. I love Steve but he has not really been the same since they put together the band Port Chuck. He really comes across as not interested in his scenes. If he is asking for money that' crazy. He works so much that asking for more money is ridiculous. I'm glad Frank and Ron are getting away from the Sonny-Jason show. It was getting to be too much. Maurice has really shined since Frank and Ron came aboard and he shows his dedication to the show. Steve has not and if one of his reasons for leaving is Frank and Ron then GODD-BYE.

Just like with Susan Flannery there has been talk about this happening before so I'm not surprised.
No one works a black t-shirt like this guy.

If he did leave it would be one less killer in PC so that's a good thing.
Steve has been on this show for 21 years. I think he can afford to retire if he wanted to.

@Divatude. I haven't watched GH in years and I so agree.
I do remember hearing on a message board, (not saying its true) that SBu
didn't want Jason to get his memory back.
I liked JQ, was he boring? eh a little, but the storyline of him having to cope with what essentially 'another person' with his face did over the years is story line gold.

Combo that with bringing back AJ (Sean Kanan), GH would truly be fire. That story could trump Tale of Two Todd's in my opinion.

But they won't do it.... sigh

I'm a little surprised at all the Jason-hate. Personally, I think the Jason-Liz, Jason-Sam, Jason-Sonny, Jason-Carly relationships have been some of the coolest on daytime. I absolutely hate the dissolution of a character the way RC has done with Jason.

It is true that GH needed new blood--and Anna, McBain, Todd and a renewed focus on the Spencers is an excellent addition, but it seems to me that RC has been writing the Jason character as if he actually hates SBu. I look at that as not respecting the legacy of the show or its viewers.
A lot of folks on this board had issues with how Luke's character evolved over the past few seasons (although, as evidenced by the Emmys, it made for great writing and acting). Why should we accept the assassination of Jason's character.

I don't know SBu from a can of paint...maybe he is a jerk or greeedy or maybe not...all i know is that writers should be able to change or evolve characters without decimating their legacy behaviors and personality.
I hope SBu and GH work it out...and I hope RC learns how to play nice in the sandbox with ALL his characters..not just the OLTL pets.
(Seriously...is the Star character really worthwhile?)

@Lukeistheman See I would agree with what you were saying if the same hadn't been done to all the characters that were trashed and rewritten to prop Jason over the last 12 years. Guza made sure every male character and woman that "rivaled" (if you can use that word) or was formerly in a relationship with Jason was decimated or needed him in some sense. And in all honesty RC hasn't any where near trashed Jason as much as AJ Quartermaine and Lucky Spencer were. I thought Guza hated any and every actor that played AJ & Lucky though not as much as I think Guza hated Warlock and Vaughan.

To put it nicely, Guza has never respected legacy so for RC not to respect Jason's legacy is completely fine with me. But I will feel bad for the JaSam fans IF SBu leaves b/c they have been hoping for a baby for nearly ten years and that has been handled so poorly that the only good thing coming out of this is Sam's backbone.

First and foremost. Moustache your postings are the best. Put in just the best places. They always give me a smile.

I returned to GH a few years ago when soaps started dwindling. I don't care for Jason. I think it would benefit the show for him to be gone. KM is laid back actress so she is better with others. The Carly/Jason stuff is just plain stupid. STUPID STUPID...I am not sure if LW missed the mark or if director is blind. Having LW depend on Jason does not fit. Never has. It seems silly. I just think some day LW is going to pick up SB and carry him out of the room. I never saw the other Carlys so I just don't get it. I never saw him with Quartermaines so for me that is not an issue.

Seems like they are taking Sonny in another direction anyway. I have to say I do agree with some that want them both gone but I don't want GH to drop dramatically in ratings. Sonny can be scaled back in order to feature other characters.

I just wish there was some way to bring Alan Quartermaine back. I think Alan and Monica are the cornerstones of the show. I can't believe they wrote him out. (Unless he wanted to leave. If it was his choice then OK but otherwise it was dumb)---I have watched on and off thru the years with sometimes big gaps and I always think of them as the anchors)

I am getting off course right now. Bottomline, I could care less if Jason leaves Port Charles for good.

Kiss GH goodbye then. While I hate the IIC that let the mob eat the whole show. Jason is, and will always be one of my favorite characters...at least until the last 4 years or so. And if SB has been one-note or phoning in his performances IMO it's because his agenda driven love (gag) interest has sucked the life out of his character and the show. Mark my words...she'll do the same to Michael Easton too.

If it's true...then I wish Steve Burton and his family all the best. I thank him for the Quartermaine/J&R/Liason years. But alas I won't have a need to watch the show anymore. Hope Rebecca Herbst follows suit- I would love to watch her on another show that truly showcased her talent.

Every contract negotiation the actor has been saying the same thing for the last few years, to retire his family to their home in Tennessee and as for "Jason Morgan" despite his popularity he is a lot to do with the wrongs of GH.

Guza's obsession with Jason Morgan threw a lot of my favs under the bus so he can continue to shine in story. I personally believe "the story" is Jason returning to becoming a Quartermaine but they refuse to do this despite numerous opportunities to pull this off.

As for his acting its non-existent Steve seems bored,...very bored with his role and since 2008 he's like a zombie.

The problem is the Jason is a Quartermaine story is passed its time. Where is the emotional fallout when the 2 people it impacted most, his father and brother are both dead. His sister, the one person aside from his grandmother who accepted him both as a Q and as a Morgan is gone. All that's left is Monica. The story would have resonated had it been done when all these people were around for the emotional fallout. now it's like who cares. Let the hit an with a heart die and leave.

Good. He's so boring to watch. I hope the next one to leave is the idiot who plays Spinelli. Add Laura Wright and Mofo Benard and I'm all in. Can't stand any of them. Bring back one of the previous actresses who played Carly.

cyberologist - I agree with your post. Despite popularity this character has run out of steam. I understand he is popular but Jason being thrusted front an center on GH has been part of what hurt the show. Brain-damaged hit men should never be romantic leads or heros. He should be an anti-hero and women should be cautious about being with him instead of putting him on a pedestal. I think Cartini knows this and are trying to write him the way he should be.

Robin’s “death” would have been a perfect time to return the character to Jason Quartermaine. It would have been a really strong story if Robin’s sacrifice wasn’t done to save a killer but to bring him back to being a good person. Patrick is right to be bitter that his sweet wife died while a dude who gets paid to kill people (and finds nothing morally wrong with it) gets to live.

As for SBU, I think at one time he really cared about acting on GH and doing work but that time has past. I mean fans actually count the number of times he blinks and stares in a scene and he’s getting top bill for that. MB, LW, AG, etc. are behaving like they want to keep their jobs while he is not.

I am really disappointed in Steve Burton pulling this hold-out on renewing his contract. With the state that all the soaps are in, they can't expect to ask for more money and think they can get it. I wish he showed more loyalty to a show that kept him employed all these years. Where is he going to go? He's at the age where he'll never get leading man roles in movies anymore. I had a feeling when Jill Phelps took over on Y&R that some of the cast would follow. Steve, Maurice, and Tony Geary were close to her. I doubt Geary would leave GH, he'll never get the salary or vacation time he gets on GH and I'm sure he'll retire once the show goes off. And Maurice, from what I read, has been so positive about Frank Valentini, and has really been giving his all to the role lately. The last few years under Guza and Phelps, he looked so bored , now, he seems to be stepping up and doing his best acting. At least he is trying to save the show. Is Steve just jealous that Todd and John McBain are becoming part of the main male actors? I just love Roger Howarth, he makes me laugh and is so original in his acting, and Micheal Easton with those dark smoldering looks, so Clint Eastwood in the part. They are the best thing to happen to GH in a long time! Loved Fridays show with all those hot shirtless guys! Jax is still so hot, wish they'd keep him on the show. I'll miss Steve Burton, Jason, as he was so much part of the show all these years. Hope he resigns and I just hope the ratings for GH would improve and that it last longer then it's 50th anniversary next April. Please keep showing more of the vets and less of the teen set, who just can't act.

THANK THE GOOD LORD ABOVE (and i'm not religious).... the Sonny-Jason-Carly show is ending finally!!! Steve Burton leaving would be a huge benefit to the show and allow breathing room for other characters.

I don't like Sonny's horrific "ConKate" pairing. Ugh. Fast forward material. But at least Sonny is not in scenes with the "unholy trinity".

Carly being the center of 3 men's attention is the only bearable storyline involving these 3. I think she should stay with Jax, not Johnny or Todd (who needs to be with his Blair).

But I'll say this, Cartini is spreading the love and creating more balance. Ron C writes much, much better than Guza's regime. Keep it up!
