Quartermaine or was that just my imagination!? lol I would love to have him back but yeah the timing couldn’t be any worst. Jason is on his way out and Edward is MIA… Anyway I would welcome a comeback of the Quartermaines. And if A.J. is the first one to return I’m happy. At least the Qs would become irrelevant and probably be not seen at all anymore. Again, great podcast guys. Log in to Reply Divatude58 September 11, 2012 Jamey did tease Sean Kana coming on some soap. But I am not sure which one. It could be GH. It would make sense as GH. But almost too late as their won’t be any reconciliation with Jason, whom I still say needs to get his miracel surgery and go back to Jason Quartermaine before SBu exits the show. Also, I am glad he put it out there that she actresses who only became popular as the villain and was a rival to some heroine wants to be the heroine. They are right. It does nothing for the show. MS and AS should stay in their role. Play the character they signed up to play and not the role that they wish that they had gotten. Phyllis is a villainess. She needs to stay that way. Having her as the heroine that sugar won’t melt in her mouth only angers and annoys me. Pushes me away. Not to mention it is a waste of her acting talents. As they say, anyone can play a hero. It takes a real actor to make a villain work. MS is about as bad as Eric Braeden. I hope JG and JFP comes in and returns the character to her former interesting entertaining villainess glory. AS for CK. I agree with that too. JFP should stay true to her vision for the show and straighten these divas and divos on the set of Y&R out. They are dictated SL so much until they have ran the show into the ground. Log in to Reply Camp is not a sustainable model September 12, 2012 @Jamey and Jillian: What JFP needs to do is pull out that cigar like Paul R. did on Ellen Holly and say, “You’re not even worth it!” In Holly’s case he was wrong. But in this case JFP would be right. Because this heifer is about as talented as bean pie. She could make a silent film role look bad. Log in to Reply CarlyCfan September 12, 2012 I knew it about Sweeney and Stafford! It’s freaking obvious that we get so much Phyllis and Sami propping because the actresses ask for it. Nobody wants Saint Phyllis and Saint Sami except them. Log in to Reply soapjunkie88 September 12, 2012
I knew it about Sweeney and Stafford! Why would you pass on being bad? LOL It’s a soap opera and it’s what made the characters of Phyllis and Sami unique in a way. I loved to hate Phyllis back in the day. Now I just hate her because she is a pathetic hypocritical overused character that I could gladly live without. But Y&R has an overall problem with their former villains. They all are now reformed heroes. They did it to Michael, Lauren, Kevin, Phyllis and by now they even turned Adam into a saint. It’s a shame. The characters were once so complex. They weren’t even all just bad … they all appeared as complex characters who had a soft side – but you just didn’t want to mess with them. Well it’s sad when these characters get turned around. Especially if an actress demands the change. Log in to Reply SoapyBitch September 12, 2012 “Felicia Gallant was hip, honey.” – Regan Best line of the podcast. I never watched AW, but I have to hit ebay and get a copy that history/photo book that they put out in the 90’s. And I need to re-read my ABC set of AMC, OLTL, and GH. I remember getting the AMC one off of QVC back in the day and when it arrived at my dorm during freshman year I was ecstatic. Go out on a Friday night. Nu-uh, I am going to be reading what was going on in Pine Valley in 1973. Bye. Log in to Reply thecourt99 September 12, 2012 I am not bothered by the fact that MS wanted to be a heroine. I understand that actors want to exercise different muscles.I expect that characters will change and grow over time. Heroines like to play the bad girl, and the bad girl likes to play the heroine. What bothers me is the way that TPTB chose to write the story. They made it instantaneous and they essentially had to forget everything that she did in the past. They have even gone so far as to make her appear to be a victim, and what is worse, they have made it so that no one can call her out (and even this was also a demand of MS, then shame on them for caving). I honestly liked it when Daniel first came back to Phyllis’ life and their relationship bonded over her hiding his crimes. I liked how she fought for him during the Cassie storyline. I saw that as her attempting to reconcile her past deeds…but somewhere between then and now, it has gotten ridiculous. I have even heard that they are making Cricket out to be the bad guy for wanting Phyllis to pay for the hit and run (I stopped watching). If so….then wow. just wow. Especially if an actress demands the change.
That’s probably one of the biggest problems as I see it on Y&R. Characters are way too extreme – they are either the evilest evil or they are brainless, clueless heroes/heroines. There are no good middle ground gray characters (of varying shades) on this show anymore. There’s little to no complexity anymore. Some of the best characters on Y&R were neither “bad” nor hero. Depending on the storyline they were a protagonist, an antagonist, and sometimes a little bit of both. I’m thinking characters like Drucilla Barber Winters, Malcolm Winters, Ryan MacNeil, original recipe Victoria, Nina Webster. These were very well written characters that just don’t seem to exist on Y&R anymore. Even so-called heroines like Nikki and Sharon weren’t faultless or perfect. Both of these women made mistakes or flat out did wrong things and faced the consequences for those actions. This whole current “get away with everything” theme that seems to always happen now for Sami Brady and Phyllis Summers is just not working. Too bad if AS and MS want to be heroines, it’s not compelling soapy drama. Sami, IMO, is a little less jarring because at least she’s a member of a core family (the Bradys). But AS is best at playing an entitled, sneaky black sheep. And this will probably be considered blasphemy on this site, but I think MS is highly overrated as an actress. She’s not incapable, but some of her acting choices suck the big one. Playing a loose cannon borderline psycho bitch is her strong suit, with moments of vulnerability when that sassy overconfident veneer is cracked. But I just don’t think she has the chops to play a heroine. Her mannerisms just don’t fit heroine, to me. It’s not just the writing, which actually is horrible and a big part of the problem. Michael, Ronan, Kevin and Nick falling all over themselves to Save Ferris, I mean Phyllis, is just so counter to this character. Phyllis has always been an army of one when it comes to her schemes and crimes. I used to “love to hate Phyllis”, and the fact that she did her dirt on her own was kind of feminist and bad-ass to me. This anti-heroine (because she knows she’s dead wrong) yet clinging damsel in distress (with Nick – which ugh!) is not the business in my opinion. Another fantastic podcast, BTW! Loved the talk show conversation, and as always on point discussion on the final four soaps Log in to Reply tedew September 12, 2012 Obviously I agree that it is annoying that at this point Phyllis does appear to be changing into a victim here. It became obvious when Saint Cricket came bouncing back into town as a vengeful Avenging Demon. Phyllis did the deed and Christine and Paul were the victims. The perpatrator needs to pay and not simply be able to get away with it all based on technicalities or sypmpathy. Phyllis is rapidly being granted access into the Victor Newman Teflon Society. Re: Days I can’t believe I’m going to say this because Jamey & I are #SantaBarbaraSistas and I rarely agree with Luke (outside of our mutual love of Nicole & Kate) BUT Days is so boring right now. This is seriously the first time in 28 years of watching that I’m getting close to saying: I don’t think I’m going to record this show anymore. (I was 11yo when I started.) If they plan on forcing these couples on us again (after you all noted–we rejected them in 2010): Jenn/Daniel, Sami/Rafe and even Victor/Maggie/Kate I’m not sure how much longer I can watch. I also have no vested interest in Nick even though I was angry he left the first time. If he’s only going to be paired with the Toxic Screen De-venger Gabi to bond over their sordid pasts waiting tables together I think I’ll pass. YAWN. There isn’t ONE storyline since the Olympics that holds any spark. I know Jamey thinks “It’s not that bad.” but I don’t agree. Worse than bad, it’s boring. The one bright light in the last regime was Will/EJ/Marlena which they’ve seemingly dismantled in a couple of weeks time. Not only is he not flirting/working for EJ anymore, he doesn’t even want him in his Mom’s life. YAWN. Marlena has been on like twice in two weeks. Like I think you mentioned in the podcast Jamey, if we rejected these stories in 2010 why are they re-kindling them now? As it is now, I FF through the show in 15 mins. like Luke noted we know Melanie is leaving someone time SOON so there is no drama in the story. Will Nick get out? Will Melanie freak out (even though she was cool with him before when he went in)? Will Melanie marry Chad? The answers is a resounding: “Bitch who cares? She’s out!” I’m going to give it another week but if things don’t improve I may just tap out until Kristen returns. There is plenty of Prime Time starting up soon and the show moves so slowly I don’t imagine I’d miss much. Log in to Reply AHeart4Fiction September 15, 2012 I need Sharon to have a tumor since Brad died and Sharon had sex with 3 guys in one week. The tumor NEEDS to be pressing against Sharon’s common sense (lol) and can now kill her. Let it be discovered by an accident or nose bleed…I don’t care just let it happen Josh Griffith! Log in to Reply Transfigurationjc September 15, 2012 Sean is going back to BB. I dont think Cartini are interested in resurrecting AJ, but that would be a great thing. But I wont hold my breath for that. And I think people need to realize that at YR JFP is a FIGURE HEAD. The power behind the throne at YR is Sony and CBS. Jill doesnt have the autonomy that she had at ABC on GH. Sony is dictating the vision and the direction of YR. About a month ago I read an off the record interview with a Sony exec and he said that Sony’s agenda for YR is much like ABC and Frons agenda for GH over the last 12 yrs. They want to bench the older vets and use them only for supporting roles. They want to turn the bulk of story over to the younger generation. Since YR is such a generational show with such strong older performers I dont know how well that’s going to work with YR. I hope that actors like Peter Bergman ( Jack) and Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki) still drive story. Id hate to see them as just supporting actors. And for me I think YR will tank like the titanic if Eric Braeden (Eric) is back burnered. His character has too many historical and familial ties to the entire canvas and without a doubt no matter how many viewers loathe his actions, the Victor character is key to the entire storyline and Eric is the show’s strongest performer. He doesnt have to be the central focus of the show, but he should still drive at least one strong story line. And personally I sincerely believe that if the brass does backburner his character Eric Braeden will leave and that would be disastrous for the show. Log in to Reply brettyboy September 15, 2012 Agree with all about B&B. I wish Brad listened to this. Log in to Reply Yoryla September 15, 2012 ^^GaryJr. – I UTTERLY agree with your entire post! The ONLY ray of hope for me to start watching Days again is the return of Kristen Blake DiMera and the new DiMera family storylines. If that somehow goes south. By all other counts, Days will soon be a distant memory in my hard drive. Log in to Reply Luke Kerr September 17, 2012 That Jamey is such a tease.
