HomeTagsComings & GoingsRUMOR REPORT: Billy Miller and Michael Graziadei LEAVING Young and Restless — on Their Own Terms! Jamey Giddens September 15, 2012 Comings & Goings, The Young and The Restless 89 Comments While most of the late-breaking casting news out of Genoa City has had women exiting stage left. I'm hearing two dudes are thisclose to making good on long-rumored plans to leave The Young and the Restless. Both Billy Miller (Billy) and Michael Graziadei (Daniel) have decided not to renew their contracts, according to multiple sources. "These guys made their decisions to leave before Jill [Farren Phelps] and Josh [Griffith] came onboard," says one setsider. "This isn't part of the bloodbath." The two popular actors have been booking a slew of gigs in primetime in recent years. Daytime Emmy winner Miller, who has played Abbott bad boy Billy since 2008, had an integral role in The CW's short-lived Sarah Michelle Gellar vehicle Ringer. He also starred in the recent, high profile Lifetime movie Fatal Honeymoon. Graziadei, who reportedly only signed a six-month extension of his last contract at Y&R, appeared in recurring roles on both The CW's The Secret Circle and FX's American Horror Story. He has been playing the role of Phyllis Summers' (Michelle Stafford) son Daniel on Y&R since 2004. Photo of Billy Miller by PR Photos 89 Responses Yoryla September 15, 2012 Well well. So FOUR WOMEN get fired and these two guys leave on their own terms? The Graz should have left a long time ago. Sad for Billy Miller leaving, but it isn’t any wonder. He belongs in primetime, he can do so much better than a soap. Log in to Reply scrumptious September 15, 2012 I’m amazed The Graz stuck around this long. He lands so much primetime work. Always so busy, booking plenty of outside gigs. He is truly a working actor. The Graz was fantastic on “American Horror Story”. I’ve been expecting him to leave for years. I think he’ll do great — just like Bethel Wilson and Lyndsy Fonseca. Their careers soared after Y&R. Michael Graziadei is, by far, the most talented young actor on the show. Log in to Reply RealisticViewer September 15, 2012 This is not good news. All of these characters leaving at once does not bode well for the show. Changes need to be done slowly so that the essence of the soap is not lost. Replacements take a long time to be accepted. We viewers love continuity, that is one of the reasons we are addicted to soaps. This is scary news because I want Y&R to be on for a very long time. How can the ratings stay up if so many characters leave at once? Log in to Reply stefanstavros September 15, 2012 I’m happy for MG because I’ve always liked him and he’s so good looking, too. Billy Miller leaving suits me just fine cause I’ve never really liked him. Maybe AH will depart with him?? Log in to Reply richalan67 September 15, 2012 Sorry to see Bm leave. MG is no big deal. He has morphed into a very greasy looking actor. Cut the hair for goodness sake. The character actually drives me to the point of FF when he is on. Log in to Reply tamcin September 15, 2012 I think we need an emergency podcast. This makes me think of the bloodbaths at DOOL when we lost Diedre, Drake, Theo, Marybeth and Stephen in quick succession a few year ago. Not saying that some of these people don’t need to go but hopefully not to make room for James Franco. Shudder…. Log in to Reply angrierblackerman September 15, 2012 They both should have been gone. They see the writing on the wall…they are probably going to try and get work in a more stable industry. Best of luck to them. I don’t want to hear budget cuts as a reason when JFP fires Kristoff St. John (it’s coming, watch…). Log in to Reply jcrenny September 15, 2012 Well damn. I saw it coming but I was in denial. I like how JFP said that the Abbotts will become more focuses again. That is kind of difficult when there is only ONE ABBOTT ON THE SCREEN. And I guess this really IS the end of Villy. Lame. If they recast Victoria… I’M OUT. Log in to Reply scrumptious September 15, 2012 Graz & Miller are in their 30’s already. If they want to make it in prime time, they need to make a move before they get too old — or else they risk being typecast as soap actors. Besides, they’re not getting any younger. They spent their 20’s in soaps, do they really want to waste the prime years of their 30’s in soaps too? I think not! Especially if they are booking other jobs. Strike while the iron is hot! If they hang around a few more years, they’ll be pushing 40, and run out of other options & opportunities. Eva Longoria, Shemar Moore, Eddie Cibrian… they all went on to do bigger and better things. And they left before they were 30! Log in to Reply Ryan-Scott September 15, 2012 I hate to see Billy go but I know I will see him again. Good luck to both of them. Sniff. Log in to Reply Soap_Stud September 15, 2012 Both of these actors owe it to themselves to go out and try to get work outside of daytime. THey have both had some success outside of Y&R already. I think, down the road, both roles could be recast. Log in to Reply marybee50 September 15, 2012 Best wishes to both.I will miss both.Probably Billy will leave when Victoria finds he has been hiding daddy dearest. As for MG,he probablt stayed on Y&R for a steady paycheck. He got the chance to do other things, while still knowing he had an income. Now,he knows he can get other roles, and figures it’s time to leave. ITA about BM – his leaving will suit me just fine since Villy i can barely stand the character of Billy. Log in to Reply ChristianDavis148 September 15, 2012 Sad to see Billy Miller go and I had Michael Graz on my list of people that JFP should fire but as we now know, Michael decided to leave on his own accord. I think the last time we will see him will be at the conclusion or shortly thereafter of Phyllis’ trial. I also suspect that he will take Lucy with him as well. And with the rumor report of Jennifer Landon (Heather Stevens) being cut, it would be nice to send those two off screen together to raise baby Lucy. At this juncture, recasting the role of Heather……..again would be ill advised. Jennifer Landon is now the 3rd actress to play the role and she had a much better handle on the character than Eden Reigel did. While Jennifer didn’t play her like the sexy vixen that Vail Bloom did when she came on to the show, she showed Heather’s soft side while at the same time showing her tough side, especially during interrogation scenes. Vail Bloom never did get to do interrogation scenes, much less see the inside of a court room, at least not my recollection. So, do not recast Heather. Recast Billy Abbott and I would leave Daniel off-screen for about 6 months to a year before recasting. He’s NOT that important to the canvas that is Y&R and I suspect that Josh Griffith will be having Phyllis on the back burner for an undetermined amount of time after her trial that having Daniel around would be a waste of monetary resources that Jill Farren Phelps could use to update the sets and stuff. JMO! Log in to Reply jcrenny September 15, 2012 I agree ChristianDavis148 I see Daniel and Heather running off into the sunset together with Lucy. I can see them coming back eventually — married with a kid of their own (with new faces, of course). Billy Abbott is needed on scene. He will be recast. I guess the big question will be if they keep him married to Victoria or not. Villy are insanely popular. I can see them breaking up for a bet as they try to find someone with chemistry with PB and AH. Y&R has really pimped Villy as their new *IT* couple, so that alone makes me think they will want to figure out how to make it work with the new person. I also suspect that a NuAbby will come back looking like the rest of the Newmans heirs — light eyes, dark hair. Nick, Victoria, and Adam all looked like siblings. Abby did not. That will be fixed. Log in to Reply snizzle September 15, 2012 It’s probably a good thing for both actors to leave while they are still young enough to pursue other projects. As we know daytime soaps are a dying breed and it’s not a good idea to get typecast on a genre that is dying out. I got a vibe from MG the past few years that he was ‘too cool for school’ anyway. It does seem a bit unfair that the actresses are getting pink slipped while the actors are leaving on their own. I suppose that’s the way it goes in Jill’s world. Log in to Reply ChristianDavis148 September 15, 2012
I agree ChristianDavis148 I also suspect that a NuAbby will come back looking like the rest of the Newmans heirs — light eyes, dark hair. MAB stupidly SORAS’ed all of these characters waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too soon. For one thing, Kyle is older than Abby and yet Abby gets SORAS’ed before Kyle does. Kyle went from a 10 year old to a 21 year old in the span of two months, which tells me that MAB is stupider than a doorknob! As for Fen and Summer, they need to hire younger actors/actresses for both of those roles. They were SORAS’d too soon. Log in to Reply ChrisGa September 15, 2012 Frankly, neither of these exits bother me. They’re both great actors–though I’ll say Miller is highly overrated and Graziadei highly underrated–but I’ve never been a Billy fan and Daniel has been rudderless since Amber left (I think Daniel peaked with Lily and they ruined him a little sticking him with world’s-oldest-teen Amber). Miller’s exit, however, will indeed throw a wrench into the Villy situation; the miniscule scraps of goodwill that Amelia Heinle actually manages to get from viewers are almost excusively tied to that pairing. With all the cuts and exits going on, maybe now’s the time to pull the trigger and recast Victoria. Log in to Reply harlee490 September 15, 2012 I wish both much success but MG & BM, but Daniel has been just floating and no real story time for a break. MAB had a lost opportunity to revisit Daniel/Lily and keep Cane DEAD. Lane fans are not true lover of Y&R as a whole show but their agenda for Lane…I’m a fan of the whole show and all characters! |( They need to recast Billy w\Josh Kelly. No surprise about Heather, I love JL and like her portrayal best but too many recast after recast became to much to handle. SB isn’t going come on here as Billy Abbott! Please NO! Log in to Reply SoapArmageddon September 15, 2012 How are all these people going to be written out at once? Is there going to be a Clear Springs-type of disaster in Genoa City? There still haven’t been any cast cuts or exits that I find truly upsetting. Both these guys can act but the show will be fine without them. They really should have Victoria leave with Billy, wait a couple of months, and then have her return, being played by a better actress. I am going to start attending church again just to pray and light candles for Steve Burton not to get cast on Y&R. I had my fill of him on GH. Log in to Reply Yoryla September 15, 2012 I don’t understand how many people can wish for recasts. IMO recasting should always be the LAST choice. If they need more characters, invent new (viable) ones so an actor can leave their mark on it. No single character is that important that just that particular character has to be on the show. Who says Victoria has to be there? Victor has two other children who most likely will stay on. For instance, Heather, they can’t possibly recast her again – that would be the fourth actress. No way. Log in to Reply gato1 September 15, 2012 Bleak! My 2 favorites! Log in to Reply jphelps September 15, 2012 Graz may be a good actor but Daniel has been a pretty useless character for a while. I think letting the character rest for a time until they can figure out what to do with him is a good idea and bring him back with someone who’s committed to the show. I feel Abby leaving is a good idea because they clearly don’t know what to do with her either. As for miller, I’m sure it was his choice just like it was Jonathan Jaxksons choice when he left GH only not. I think what’s happening is with 4 soaps left and utterly thousands of talented cheaper actors available, there is no reason for these shows to go out of their ways to cater to folks who have one foot out the door already. Billy can be recast easily, he has been. Send him off for a while when BM leaves and bring him back with a new face in a few months. I don’t know how anyone can say Miller leaving is so damaging when he’s. been off canvas so much the past 2 years as its been. Soaps are an ensemble. OT a showcase for so called super actors. It’s time these shows start remembering that. Log in to Reply jcrenny September 15, 2012
Here is what I’d love for JFP to do: DE-SORAS Abby, Kyle, Fen and Summer. They are the same age. At this point I don’t even mind that Kyle and Abby have been made older. It is believable since their parents are older. And there is potential SL with them in the early 20s crowd. Summer? She shouldn’t have been SORAS’d so soon. It really is unrealistic that Nick Newman has a 20+ year old son and a 15 year old daughter. I wish they would fix that. Fen could be a teenager. Lauren and Michael are both in their late 40s/early 50s and that is believable. We do need teens on this show. Just not unrealistic rushed ones. Log in to Reply jcrenny September 15, 2012
Who says Victoria has to be there? Victor has two other children who most likely will stay on.
Seriously? No offense but Victoria is will always be Victor’s true heir. They have made that perfectly clear since the day the girl was born. Yes Adam is manipulative like him, Nick is his first born son, and Abby is a spoiled princess — yada yada. But make no mistake Victoria Nicole Newman was raised to take over. It seems a little harder now that Amelia Henle is in the role and is so drastically different from Heather Tom, but it is what it is. This is why Victor is the hardest on her. This is why he is always going on and one about how SHE would be by HIS side at the end. Victoria is destined to take over. When HT left the show scrambled for years to find a replacement because her presence was a serious lack on the show. She in many ways is the heart of the Newmans. I wish they would get back to that. Log in to Reply dkp September 15, 2012 Glad for the Graz. I’ve never liked Daniel anyways. Sad about Billy Miller, but he never seems to be around, always off to book new gigs, we need someone committed to the role. Maybe we can also finally get a Victoria recast? But with Abby gone, Billy leaving, and actor who plays Kyle booking a recurring gig on Vampire Diaries, and Ashley already, how exactly is this bringing new life to the Abbotts? Jack will be the only Abbott left. Hopefully they plan on recasting some of these roles. Log in to Reply alstonboy4315 September 15, 2012 According to Michael Bruno, any actor over the age of 25, with few exceptions is already too “old” to SUCCESSFULLY transition from soaps into primetime and film. But I never believed that tomfoolery. After all, look at Cynthia Watros and Wendy Moniz. They transitioned and were past this “golden age.” I will miss both of these men. Michael G. is certified eye candy and a good actor, once you manage to look past those ridiculous hairdos… And Billy Miller is one of the best things to happen to this show in a long time. He infuses it with humor and makes Amelia Heinous tolerable. Speaking of Amelia Heinous, can she leave with him………..please? I hope that Kill Farren Phelps can accomplish what Jack Smith, Lynn Latham and Maria Bell were afraid to do and RECAST Tricktoria Newman with a CAPABLE actress. I hate to see ANYONE out of a job in this economy, but I am sure that if push comes to shove, Michael Weatherly will throw some money her way. After all, they do have a child together……….. Okay, I have gotten my bitchiness out of the way for the day. Off to the mall……….. Log in to Reply GHfan-4now September 15, 2012 This next podcast will be interesting as hell. LOL Log in to Reply brettyboy September 15, 2012 Gutted, love both of them! Log in to Reply soapjunkie88 September 15, 2012 My first reaction was: Only one Abbott standing! Then I thought again and forgot that next to Jack we would still have Kyle.^^ Well has been coming for a very long time. Billy Miller just needs to be in primetime. No doubt about that. I can’t think of a Billy Abbott recast and would feel like post-David Tom all over again. Michael Graziadei’s last good storyline was Daniel’s love story with Amber. IMO Michael should have left with Adrienne Frantz and since Amber’s B&B return was one big disappointment I would say that this should have been undone too. I have super long hair and a beard, but if I had Daniel’s dirty look I would definitely clean up. The, what appear to be stick on tatoos do absolutely nothing for him either. I really like Billy Miller and think he and Amelie Heinle are great together. I may have misspelled her name. The ones I would really like to see gone, will evidently hang in there. Log in to Reply RedChair September 15, 2012 As a long-time viewer, it bemuses me to see how many of you assume that Victor and Nikki embody Y&R. When I started watching in ’76/’77, the core families were the Prentices and the Fosters, with Kay Chancellor the lead barracuda. And we never thought they’d be replaced. The Abbotts and Newmans were declasse compared to the Prentices. I’d like to see Victor killed on the docks, with Nikki taking on Kay’s role when Jeanne Cooper finally retires. (Come on… how long can she keep going?)Keep Jack, and his machinations, but against his step-children. I’d like to see him literally dance on Victor’s grave, then have to fight the descendants who end up being nastier. Then throw Kyle in the mix, and you have DALLASesque drama. Sagas are intended to be multi-generational, but eventually actually kill off matriarchs and patriarchs. Hasn’t anyone ever watched the original FORSYTE SAGA? That’s a good start right there. And I’d really love to see Lorrie Prentice come back and start throwing her millions/billions into the mix. She is one of the few women to get the best of Victor by getting her company back. Now, THAT could bring us back to both the past essence of Y&R, with the next generations in the mix. And also, in the early ’80s, Nikki’s role was back-burner to her sister Casey until she got involved with Greg Foster and then Paul Williams… L-O-N-G before Victor impregnated her, despite his vasectomy. And why doesn’t Nikki suffer more psychological trouble from killing her father, killing her playmate, and killing her rival? I went through more trauma losing a job. Perhaps the thing we tend to forget about soaps is how organic they are and they can survive anything but corporate and creative neglect. Good stories with addictive characters are the key, not just our current favourites. I know I’m just blowing smoke, but while I like both Miller and Graziati, they nor their families are crucial to the mix. I guess a lot of you forget that Phyllis wasn’t always there, either, and was played by another actress between Stafford’s tenures. So, Ms. Phelps, come in and give Genoa City the enema it deserves. You cannot do worse, and if some favourites get the heave-ho, so be it. Just get some good writing in there and we’ll stick with you. To threaten to leave because a single favourite character is gone says what about how one spends time when the others are on screen. I loved Heather Tom, but her Victoria had qualities that bugged me as well. I feel like Victoria is a nice blend of her parents now. She just needs to be allowed to be a bitch on wheels more often. I never understood why they had her bite her tongue throughout the Chelsea nonsense. It was completely OOC. She thrives in a powersuit. LET HER! Victoria has been the ONLY female on this show to hold the position of CEO at multiple companies. She currently is the only one we see actually working. She is clearly a competent CEO. They should just retire Victor already and let the woman take over. To the poster up-thread who mentioned that they should bring back the Prentiss family. I COMPLETELY AGREE! They should bring back Brooks Prentiss! Have him take interest in Victoria. Could you imagine that storyline? Victor thought Billy Abbott was a nightmare. How about Lorie’s son? LOL Then we will have yet another awesome business to work stories around! Prentiss Industries. That in addition to Newman Enterprises, Jabot Cosmetics, Chancellor Industries, Beauty of Nature, and McCall Unlimited — so much potential. They should also ditch the dead weight that is Jeffrey, Anita, Carmine, Chelsea, etc and bring back legacy characters that mean something to the show like Philip Chancellor III & IV, Mackenzie Browning, Brock Reynolds, Nate Hastings, Jr., Olivia Winters, etc. Log in to Reply pferrando September 15, 2012 Good lord. Mass exodus. Billy will be sorely missed and the chemistry between him and Victoria is undeniable. They, along with Lily and Cane were two couples that I could stand to watch although they often were dealt crap to act. Like many on here, I am fine with Daniel going. I don’t like the way the actor has kinda let himself go looks wise and his pairing with the third Heather does not work anyway. I don’t want a Daniel recast, but Billy might need to be offscreen and then bring on someone who’s not a friend of Jill’s. Please no GH actors. I can see new characters coming as I type this. It’s pointless to reduce the current cast just to bring in unfamiliar newbies. Please no. Log in to Reply Divatude58 September 15, 2012 I am not sad to see either one of these actors go. The character of Daniel suffers from the same issue as Jack Abbot in the romance department. They took what should have been his life long love in Lily due to a little chemistry the actress had with someone else the same way they too Phyllis from Jack to pursue the never ending triangle of Sharon/Phyllis/Nick. And then when they were about to revisit Daniel and Lily, TPTB caved to rabid fans. Don’t even recast Daniel. He has no purpose but to sleep with every young woman that comes to town. Billy Miller is not commited to the show and the story has suffered due to it. Let him go. Recast Billy 6 months from now. Or not at all. Kyle is not an adult. We don’t necesarily need them both. Who they should bring back is Keemo. He is a member of a core family and will add to diversity. Log in to Reply Ringwraiths September 15, 2012 I SO hope this is true. Both of these characters need a rest and much retooling. Billy Miller is overrated in my opinion. The character of Billy Abbott has become nothing but an asinine buffoon with lame stories on Y&R. It is time for Billy Abbot to be written off and given a rest. They can bring the character back in time with a new actor with talent and in a great story. I have not enjoyed Michael Graziadei’s acting in years on Y&R. He now looks like he is just sleep walking in his scenes. Daniel has never really had a good and meaty story after his first go around romance with Lily. Daniel is now just another useless character that needs to be written off and rested. TPTB can bring Daniel back in time with a good actor in a well written story in the future. I think Victoria Newman and Lily Ashby need to be recast with confident actresses who have talent, good looks, fire, and sex appeal(charisma). IMO Log in to Reply love2chat September 15, 2012 Be careful what you wish for! Many people wanted a better show and complained about Y&R and now you have the dreaded JFP in control. I predict Y&R will drop like a stone in ratings the same way GH did when JFP, Frons and Guza were in control of GH. Say goodbye to any favorites or VETS on Y&R. Say hello to younger ‘cheaper’ actors and actresses ( cut in pay ) and Say a big hello to some former disgruntled GH stars who thrived under JFP. GOOD LUCK. Log in to Reply Transfigurationjc September 15, 2012 I dont blame Graz or Billy Miller for pursuing prime time. But you have good points. I think the brass needs to pool the salary money their saving with the cast cuts and approach Victoria Rowell ( Druscilla) for a return. Im sure if they paid her well, gave her a decent contract and story she would return at least for a while. That would spike ratings. And since they want to dispatch so many characters I think now would be a great time to write Kimberlin Brown back in as Sheila to shake things up and kill off a few folk. KB is the best villainess to grace Genoa City. I would also consider rehiring Peter Porte as Ricky he was also very good in my opinion. And while they’re firing people they should consider Jessica Heap ( Eden). To me she is just bland and she has no chem with anyone. I doubt many would miss her. And I think they should put Liz Hendrickson ( Chloe) and Gregg Rikart ( Kevin) on reoccuring status. They never have any strong significant story and neither of them is a heavy weight character like Phyllis or Nick. That would also save money. Log in to Reply pumpkin September 15, 2012 I have seen the actor in other roles. He was good but I found Daniel boring. I also know that when a new actress came on, they would throw them at him to see what would stick. That is not how it should be done. Testing yes, but full blown stories, I don’t think so. I knew right away they would have NuHeather sleep with him. Standard pattern there. I know Phelps could possibly kill a vet. She seems to think creating story for those around a beloved vet saves a show. Some things never change. This would not shock me since it is her MO. As far as these two guys, I am not shocked they are moving on. The writing for them last few years is subpar. PB gave an interview to SID, SOD one of them, where this is basically what he said. He said the Keemo storyline was silly, and yeah that basically it should never be brought up again. That’s one of the biggest issues with Y&R. These actors have too much damn say about their storylines. Just go to work and act. Way too many cooks in the kitchen over there. It’s one thing to offer suggestions, ideas, etc. But when you start demanding stuff, or in the cases of some cast members on this show, leak things to your fans, push your fans to demand things on your behalf, it becomes a mess. I want to preface the following comments by stating that these are my personal opinions/observations as a Lane fan and not representative of said fan base: I was a participant in Christel Khalil’s campaign, not because I am invested in the fictional couple of Lane, (although I think Lily, Cane and the twins are the most beautiful family on daytime or primetime, to date), but because of what the couple represents socially. This fictional family unit symbolizes a REAL growing evolutionary tapestry that transcends the hateful, mean spirited ideas of what couples, soaps included, are. It represents a dynamic with which I can identify (multicultural, sans stereotype), that isn’t focused on race, color, creed or nationality. In my opinion, supporting the fictional couple of Lane supports the world that currently exists, despite how much narrow-minds and hateful hearts want to believe otherwise. Times have changed, the world is evolving, and if soaps don’t expand their point of view, they’ll be irrelevant to anyone other than those still confused about the functionality of phones without a cord. Fewer culturally diverse people are satisfied with the OLD perception of what is beautiful, which is why I was so insulted when the call went out to re-cast Christel Khalil’s character to a generic politically acceptable version – this, from people that don’t have a CLUE who the fans of multicultural storylines are or what they want (ala, Ji Min Kim, Rafael Torres and his maid-aunt). It doesn’t take a psychiatrist to deduce that bigots (of any culture/race) will not embrace anything indicative of Lane, or Winters Island Wednesdays unless someone’s neck is rolling, reformed drug addicts, offensive inappropriate confrontations with extended family members, or oppressed servants, so the duplication of effort to satisfy the masses is only going to piss off the ONLY people who gives a crap about this segment of society. The awesome ray of sunshine is Evolution – the wonderful thing about it is that it’s uncontrollable. Fighting it is like pushing against an immovable object, it will surpass narrow minds, and intolerant views, no matter how long it takes. Ultimately, it will happen despite opposition and the loss of the only morally/ethically uncontaminated couple on Y&R in particular. It isn’t about following, CK/DG or race; it’s about celebrating similarities, which obliterates separatism. That’s why I enthusiastically participated in the Plane Banner campaign and I don’t give a F*ck what anyone thinks about it – I just wanted to openly address my opinion to the pompous, pontificating, as*holes that think they have all the answers to Lane’s fan appeal. Additionally, the old Standard Soap Opera adage that married couples are doomed to the back-burner is simply the limitations of a supposedly creative mind, as well as the recycling of obsolete scribes of defunct soaps. Don’t blame the couples; recognize the ineptness of the writing staff. If TPTB had the temerity to CREATE storylines that keeps fans invested in THIS millennium, with the BALLS to tell actors when they’re too old to take their shirts off and stick their tongues down the throat of every young woman on canvas, the focus on couples that are actually DEVOTED to each other will reign again – ala Lane and Likey. For me, Christel Khalil IS Lily Ashby, and I will accept no other, she’s tied to my emotional investment in Lane, which is why I watch Y&R at all. Granted, Lane is rarely on screen, yet still reign as most popular couple, but why is anyone surprised, amidst the catastrophically sleazy bed hopping, disloyal, scheming, sanctimoniously unredeemable character crapfest that is currently Y&R. Whining about robot voting looses credibility to anyone NOT fixated on this hateful delusion. Lastly, although I digressed, I participated in the “Plane Banner” campaign because of the aforementioned reasons and to let Christel Khalil know that she was respected by the people that appreciated her work, contract negotiations notwithstanding, PERIOD! But beyond this… Lily has had moderately to very successful pairings with other men, Billy and Daniel respectively, that had nothing to do with race, color, creed or nationality. This particular ‘issue’ has never in fact been an issue for this character. When Lily was paired with Daniel and even Billy, and even in the beginning days of the relationship with Cane, she was very integrated into the rest of the cast. She had friends, she was in school, she was making jewelry at one point, she had a job. The writers wanted to tell some kind of story with this character, it’s when fans, the audience whoever, complained about everything they did with her that didn’t benefit one common goal (the happiness of Lane), that they just shrugged their shoulders and did nothing with her. They’d made her the center of a triangle/quad between Billy (Billy who was an Abbott, one of the main core families of the show) and Cane, they could’ve written story for a long time between Chloe/Billy/Lily/Cane, but folks cried, and well, the writers gave them what they wanted. Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, on this show under Maria’s regime, for a character to be viable and on canvas for her, she had to be able to bounce them around in relationships. She ‘couldn’t’ do that, so we ended up with a Lily with no uterus, no job, no education, no friends, and two kids with a non-core family character.
For me, Christel Khalil IS Lily Ashby, and I will accept no other, she’s tied to my emotional investment in Lane, which is why I watch Y&R at all.
And therein lies part of the problem. The actors aren’t their characters. Don’t get me wrong, when someone is good for a role (and I concede that ‘good’ is subjective) you want to see them in it. I may joke (even laugh about) CK/Lane fans paying for a plane, but at the end of the day, that is that fanbase’s right to do what they want with their money. I actually don’t mind CK as Lily. When the actress is interested/engaged in her storylines, she shows potential. When Cane was ‘dead’ CK used the opportunity to do something with her acting. When Cane came back, it was back to the same. My problem is when the actor’s desires interfere with the character. This is only to speaks to the rumor that CK wants to go recurring. If it’s true (again, if it’s true) that’s not good for the character of Lily. Nothing can even be attempted to make the character more substantial if she appears only four times a month, ten times when they give her her once every six months storyline a la Lauren. Lily/CK has basically been recurring for the last year almost and we see where that’s gotten Lily as a character, NOWHERE. This isn’t even CK specific for me. Love Billy Miller in the role of Billy, but his career is/was getting to the point where he couldn’t/can’t really give the role the attention it requires anymore, and Billy Abbott the character is suffering for it. So for him also I say, compromise, or move on. I’m actually happy he moved on. He should. He needs to. At this specific point in his career he has an opportunity to really get somewhere outside of daytime. He should take the chance before it’s too late. Same for CK, I really do think she should move on. One, they’ve tried to get rid of her before, so she should’ve known before this incident where she stood on the totem pole of importance in tiic’s eyes. Two, JFP can make a place very unpleasant to work, if she doesn’t want you there. CK should ask Genie about it. Whether JFP had any opinions on CK one way or the other before this, I can’t believe anything that’s played out since the leak of that Lily casting call, has endeared CK in JFP’s view point. And three, I honestly believe CK could find success on CW/ABC Family type show, garnering her a greater fanbase and more opportunities than anything she’ll get from daytime. Lasly, I freely admit I spent WAY too much time typing this, LOL, am a dweeb for staying in on a Sat night, and that this post is too long, didn’t read, lmao. His departure this time will yet again be due to the actions of his unstable wife. JM will be missed by me but he really can’t hover there. After all, he has been the Goddess Jessica Lange’s boy toy on screen. And I like the way he looks now more than ever with the small exception of that large tattoo between his shoulder blades. Log in to Reply ANGELWENDY15 September 16, 2012 Too many actors leaving or axed at once. It takes awhile for an audience to accept new characters, hopefully the vets will get good story-lines to keep the interest. Not surprised about Genie Francis and Debbie Morgan, the roles were all wrong fo them. Their characters were just so wrong and boring.Billy Miller was great at first, loved the whole beginning of him and Victoria’s relationship, so fun to watch. After they married, they gave him less and less to do. I think Heather will be the next to go since Daniel is leaving. As a GH watcher for years, BEWARE Y & R fans. When I heard Jill Phelps was taking over, get ready for a DARKER show. If James Franco comes on, that will be the death of the show for sure. His character was horrible and bizzare on GH, ruined the show. Prepare for Steve Burton to eventually come on also, but he is good on the eyes and a helluva lot better then Franco. Log in to Reply SwanQueen59 September 16, 2012 Ditto Ryan-Scott. It saddens me that PB was so dismissive of the story. There was a lot of material to be had with that branch of the Abbott family tree. I’d point to all the times when you had Ashley, Tucker, Billy, Victoria, et al. over in the orient the past two years and I honestly don’t recall Keemo’s name coming up. Glaring when you consider Ashley and Billy are blood relatives in addition to the family business tie in which, you’d assume, Tucker and Victoria would be keenly aware of. Whether PB liked it or not, there should have been, at minimum, a mention of Jack’s son… 0:) Log in to Reply Divatude58 September 16, 2012 @Cindy_C If Lane is evolutionary then expect them to get the same treatment as all soap pairings. They all split up and pair with other people and get back together. Lane should be no exception because they are an IR couple. I say treat them like the epic love their fans seems to think they are and give them the Nikki/Victor treatment. Victor has kids with two other women and Nikki has been married ssssooo many times….but it doesn’t diminish their connection in the slightest. Don’t expect this couple to get special treatment. Break them up and pair Lily with whomever the writers deem a good story at the time. And in this particular instance, it is an AA. And the Lily character is loooooong overdue for it. Overlooking the fact that there are many AA viewers who doesn’t like the fact that their one legacy female on the show has never had a romance with a Black person because that in itself should be enough to do it. But soaps, Y&R in particular, have a history of bringing in characters to give stories to the vets on canvas. That is the only reason for introducing a new character unrelated to anyone on canvas. Y&R has yet to bring on a new young AA male because they have no romantic pairing for him (it’s why Nate is not brought back full time too). So if he can’t be paired with Lily then they won’t bring him on (and one could argue that they could pair him with one of the young white woman but really. It’s not a realistic option as they won’t even pair Devon with one nor Neil. KSJ has said that daytime doesn’t do that kind of IR. Just saying…). So it follows that Lily being paired with Cane (or anyone) forever and never dating anyone else limits diversity on canvas. It’s really not in the best interest of the show. I actually just recently learned that PB had such an opinion about this storyline and was shocked upon hearing it! Most longtime-fans, who have been watching from the 80’s, really loved that storyline! It showed such a kind and emotional side to Jack, not to mention honorable with the Vietnam war connection. Also, from polls that are made time to time, about who is Jack’s true love, most people say it is Luan. And like someone said, Elizabeth Sung was fabulous in the storyline. Her acting was so natural and touching it was palpable. Apparently PB felt that the whole storyline was “some writers dream come true” and a “strange detour”, his own words. And that he wishes everyone would just forget that it ever happened. PB thought that Jack going to Vietnam was totally out of character for a millionaire playboy, which I do actually agree on. But still, it spawned a very touching storyline for him. I am very surprised on his attitude. Log in to Reply Divatude58 September 16, 2012 @yoryla I have just lost whatever affection I might have had for PB. Every story penned is “some writers dream come true”. How is that one any different? I am not quite getting that this was a “strange detour”? Just exactly what was “strange” about it. PB had only been playing Jack for a few years when the story was written so how could he possible consider it a detour. He barely had a handle on the character himself. Now, a millionaire playboy going to Vietnam was possibly not all that feasible. However, John Abbot Jr is the son of John Abbot Sr. and I can see John Sr pushing his son to go because it is “the right thing to do” and I can see John Jr wanting to go to “make his father proud”. Something that he always strived to do. So no, in that respect it is not farfetched. I am still not really understanding PB’s aversion to the story. Nor why he wouldn’t embrace the return of Keemo. A writer’s dream come true is having a millionaire playboy fall in love with a marry that crazy a$$ Phyllis. That was the least realistic pairing Jack has ever had. Although I actually liked the pairing. Who is going to give the girls of Genoa City their first ‘trip’ into womanhood without Danny-boy on the canvas? Good thing Summer is his sister, Ive seen the way he looks at her. Everyone will miss Miller. From us old gents who like his cockiness and the way he gets Victoria nekked, to the young girls who sigh when he on screen, he will be missed. Miller is destined for greater things other than Y&R. When he is on prime-time, the screen lights up. On ‘Ringer’, he mad a bad show interesting. He was in a Lifetime movie a week ago about a husband who is a killer, and it was more than just a boring Lifetime movie cause of him. So good luck, Miller. Who could JFP re-cast him with? Log in to Reply missnikki87 August 1, 2013 I absolutely love Billy Miller and will be so sad to see him go – however I do feel it is Michael’s (Daniel) time to go. Log in to Reply pferrando August 7, 2013 Missnikki…Miller isn’t going, but Michael’s return was just to usher out Phyllis. Was great to see him with some intelligent storyline material though.
