Ratings, Rants and Raves: General Hospital Hits Highest Numbers Since Cartini Took Over!

CBS Daytime's The Young and the Restless didn't fair nearly as well the week in question, which has to make Maria Arena Bell burst into giggle farts.  Under the new direction of Jill Farren Phelps and Josh Griffith, Y&R dropped 147,000 total viewers, and fell one-tenth of a point in households. Y&R held steady in W18-49, and actually went up one-tenth of a point among W18-34. However, it was bested by GH in that demo.

To be fair to JFP and Josh, having to clean up another person's mess is always a difficult task. Let's face it, the shape MAB left Y&R in would have made those people on Storage Wars take a pass at rifling through that junk to attempt to find buried treasure.

The new regime quickly ended Phyllis (Michelle Stafford) being on trial for trying to mow Cricket (Lauralee Bell) and Paul (Doug Davidson) down like stray blades of grass 20 years ago. Summer (Haley King) caused a car accident that likely resulted in Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) losing Adam's (Michael Muhney) baby. Nick (Joshua Morrow) filed for divorce and Ol' Smilin Jack (Peter Bergman) seized control of Newman Enterprises.

For the most part, I've been enjoying the first few weeks of JFP and Josh's material. I'm grateful at least one of MAB's never-ending criminal cases is over, though I would have rather they scrapped Paul (Doug Davidson) being harassed for mercifully killing Ricky (Peter Porte). I'm not crazy about everyone acting like Cricket doesn't have a right to be pissed that someone tried to kill her. Nor am I thrilled about the iconic Newman Ranch going out in a Blaze of Glory (Seriously, JFP. If you had been handed the Dallas reboot, would you have blown up Southfork?!) or the best spitfire in daytime, Abby Newman (Marcy Rylan) getting a lame-ass exit story, but I'll talk about that more in next week's RRR. What I am loving is "Navery". Avery (Jessica Collins) is quickly becoming my new favorite soap character, thanks to her cute apartment, her sexy fantasies and penchant for baking. See what a little characterization can do, MAB?

The Bold and the Beautiful fell 203,000 total viewers the week of Oct. 15. B&B fell two-tenths of a point in households, and one-tenth of a point among W18-49. Among W18-34, the 30-minute sudser was tied for last place.

As much as it pains me to note this, B&B shifted its focus away from those vapid, ratings-grabbing young'uns and started digging deep into meatier stories for the grown-ups the week in question. New mom Katie (Heather Tom) was in postpartum turmoil. Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang) revealed that texting Deacon (Sean Kanan) on her honeymoon had cost her the man she's loved for 25 years. Stephanie (Susan Flannery) coughed enough to hack up three lungs, and CEO Thomas (Adam Gregory) acted a plum fool.

Sure, there was still action, make that inaction, on the Liam (Scott Clifton), Hope (Kimberly Matula) and Steffy (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) front, but they weren't nearly as prominent as they have been. Maybe those three really are ratings magic for this show? Or maybe Ronn Moss' (ex-Ridge) ever-tweeting fans tuned out?

NBC's Days of Our Lives spiked in total viewers the week in question. DAYS went up 112,000, and was up one-tenth of a point in households. DAYS held steady in the major female demos, but was dead last across the board (tying B&B for last place among W18-34).

The eternally-striking Eileen Davidson brought lethal Kristen Blake DiMera back to Salem the week of Oct. 15, and promptly squared off with former Secret Room-ate Dr. Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall). Before that, Kristen had a humorous exchange with the kid she wanted to name Baby John. To say EJ (James Scott) wasn't happy to see his "sister" was an understatement.

Kristen's former sister-in-law Jennifer Horton (Melissa Reeves) was in jail for having "murdered" Nicole's (Arianne Zucker) baby. This had Dr. Hairy Crotch (Shawn Christian) all conflicted, or was that constipated? Meanwhile, the Bradys dealt with the tragic revelation that Ma (Peggy McKay) might have Alzheimer's.

I am impressed with the way DAYS is handling Caroline's dementia. For a soap that has come to be known over the past two decades for being outlandish, they seem to have really done their homework on this one. I'm relieved that Bo (Peter Reckell) is leaving town to help his mother, as opposed to some midlife crisis brought on by budget cuts at the Salem PD.

What didn't impress me was how lackluster Kristen's return was scripted and promoted. This is one of the most infamous lady villains in soap history, yet they brought her back via a coffee klatch with Stefano (Joe Mascolo), while wearing a lop-sided hat? At least when she got to Salem, Kristen should have invited all of the townsfolk to some mysterious gala for a shocking reveal. It was all a bit anticlimactic.

I am very happy that GH's ratings are improving. I wonder how much of it is the writing, the story, or the timeslot though. I guess you can never tell....

Jamey- your never ending support of Jason & Elizabeth (The Greatest Love Story Still to be Told) always puts a smile on my face. The last time the ratings were high was Jake's death- you know, when they killed off a legacy character for the Jasam agenda baby. I'm sure the recent jump in ratings also had a lot to do with Jason's impending departure. If Frank and Ron continue to make this the Sam Show then they are doomed to return to 1.5's and no amount of "returns" are going to matter. Felicia has been wasted. Jerry and Jaspers returns were too short. Not enjoying Duke's return. And Robert's return needs to undo the mess they made of his character when he last "returned".

FV and RC had me excited in the beginning, but they lost me several weeks ago.

Congratulations to Frank and Ron for seeing the fruits of their labor in these ratings! I've always supported them (with a few exceptions) and send them a big pat on the back. Now, I say go all out with their transformation of the show. It's so obvious that the longtime devoted viewers of GH want more diversity in front-burner storylines and the return of our favorite "legacy" characters. I say bring back as many of these actors as possible as long as they can be woven into carefully crafted and smart storylines. And even those who don't want to commit to a long term can still be written in a way to give viewers satisfaction, i.e. Tina and Cord on OLTL.
Now, to make room for our old favorites, time to go ahead and ultimately phase out the characters who have monopolized our screens for the past 10 years and sucked the life out of the show. Time to move on Sonny and Sam (the previous monopolizers) along with Sean, Olivia, Connie/Kate, Steve and Spinelli.
With the 50th anniversary coming up around the corner, there may not be a lot of time left for this soap. I say go all out and restore GH to the glorious show so many of us used to love.

I think the ratings spike has to do with old fans tuning in to see Anna and Duke. Also OLTL fans tuning in to see Tea lose her baby. If JaSam was really a ratings spiker, than their wedding would have been watched by a lot more ppl.

Also these new writers show NO diversity. Do they hate Black ppl? Where is Shawn. Where is Molly and her boyfriend. They were so cute during the water scare.

Congrats to them!

It's my opinion that the previous regime told stories of depression, darkness, and violence. We are now in lighter territory. Cheers. Beer

Not surprised by the drops for Y&R and B&B since they had gone up so much the previous week and in B&B's case had been up significantly since Ronn Moss left. B&B even hit a 2.6! Last Friday's shocking ending and yesterday's too should help plus they're off to Aspen again. Y&R is finally feeling like the old Y&R again and I'm loving it! So nice to see character driving writing again instead of all plot, plot, plot and everyone acting completely out of character. Hopefully once the remnants of the previous regime's stories are over and the axed actors are gone then we'll see a ratings uptick.

Oh and I agree Jamey I am loving Avery and "Navery" too! So nice to see Avery developed into a fully formed character and fleshed out. She's become very real and relatable while Navery brings out a new side to Nick that I am loving. They are also being written the right way this time around instead of just hopping into bed immediately with no buildup like the last time. I hope we continue to see Avery as a leading lady because she is a breath of fresh air!

"To be fair to JFP and Josh,..." UGH. Exactly, more propping and propping.

It's so funny how some people can just screw up in a zillion different ways but still somehow get a pass.

Wonderful for GH! I totally see why the ratings are up, they deserve it. GH is must see TV for me these days. The cast is the best one in the business. Not only are the individual actors stellar - they work as an ensemble.

Liason is the best love story YET to be told!

SnB wedding was around 2/28/11 last year and Jake's death was 3/21/11. The ratings spike had a lot to do with a lot of things including SBu leaving the show.

As always great ratings article Jamey!

Congrats to Frank and Ron, I think the increase is a combination of things, new timeslot, old fans tuning in for Anna and Duke, writing, and showing lighter things. With A.J. back at the helm and Robert coming back, ratings should continue to spike.

Days,
The only things that has me hook is Kristin's return and Bo's departure, everything else is boring.

I agree about Y&R and Avery. She's becoming a viable character! Sex fantasies of Nick and baking cupcakes_ she's awesome! Too bad Y&R's ratings aren't necessarily reflecting the improved writing but it may take some time. And it's a crying shame that B&B isn't rewarded with improved ratings as it's been really good! Goes to show you that I am out of touch. I think Heather Tom and Susan Flannery have been great. The break from Hope/Liam/Steffy has resulted in a more balanced, more engaging soap opera.

Good for GH. The show's ratings have been on the rise since the timeslot change in September and I am sure lapsed viewers returned for Jason Morgan's exit. I think the move to have AJ return so soon after Jason exited was a good move in effort to hold on to those returned, lapsed viewers. Now, can we get story for Liz, Patrick and Tracy!

Oh yeah, "more propping and propping" and passes...about their first week of air shows. We called Maria Auntie Ri Ri for a freaking year. We aren't gonna crap on a new regime that just took over a disaster simply because you're ticked they fired Genie Francis.

It will continue to improve with focus on the Quartermaines. Robin (December) and Robert (November) will be back and i read that Alan will be appearing (didnt say if he was in spirit or returning). I know many will complain about Cartini's handling of flashbacks to get all the dead people back but you have to suspend your senses. They are trying to bring back a lot of favorites and there has to be some explanation as to how they are suddenly alive. Just go with it. The end result is worth it.

Honestly, I was one of those who snarked endlessly about Frank and Ron taking over at GH. I HATED a lot of what they did at OLTL. It wasn't the same OLTL that I knew and loved before they came in.

However, after a couple of months into their tenure at GH, I was sold. The show was on its last legs before they came on board. It is now the best hour of daytime TV. Beer

Yoryla, Jamie's right. You've had a chip on your shoulder about Y&R ever since they announced they fired Genie Francis. Y&R's not perfect, but I think most of us long-time viewers can agree this week started to resemble the old show. If it's not your cup of tea, then fine, you're free to your opinion. But you haven't offered a true critique of the show other than "Those bastards got rid of Genie!" One person does not make a show, especially when she plays a character that has not and never will be central to the show.

And congrats to Ron and Frank! I hope the audience continues to grow!

For the record - the GF firing is not the *only* reason I don't like Y&R anymore. In fact, I'm glad she's out of there, because Y&R don't deserve to have her anymore! Had GF stayed, she would have been the underdog of the whole town in storylines and have totally un-worthy material presented to her. I can see it clearly from these last days she has been on. The "chip" on my shoulder is my total lack of interest in the show anymore. It's everything, the lighting, the new music, the storylines, who is front-and-center - it's everything.

But whateva, thank God I have DAYS and GH to concentrate on.

PREACH IT JAMEY! Gads, people need to give JFP and JG time to hit their groove. They really did have to come in and clean up the pile of horse manure that MAB left on their desks (sorry for the ugly image, but let's call it for what it was, horse manure). To say the least, this show has vastly improved in the very short few weeks that JFP and JG's material has been on the air. I'm THOROUGHLY enjoying Y&R again. I could care less for those that worship the ground that Genie Francis walks on. She NEVER should have been cast on Y&R in the first place. That was a HUGE blunder and I'm glad that Jill and Josh have fixed that.

To all y'all!

Don't try to spin this on about Genie Francis. The show is B-A-D!!! IT SUCKS!! That's just the way it is. SoapGod, you wanted critique, fine I'll give it you.

Phyllis gets OFF and they spin it around so Christine is the victim?! Umm, I'm sorry - WRONG. Fans have been waiting for YEARS for Phyllis to pay for that crime, and finally it might happen, and then they SCRAP it. No, it is not a good explanation to say "at least the sl's over". It was all in VAIN, and she could have very well gotten community service, a la Victor in 2003! Christine is a VET and a law-abiding citizen, she doesn't just earn to get spat on!

Why out of all people is CHELSEA the "MAB newbie" that gets to stay?! SHE is not all that. I am NOT interested in any Sharon/Adam/Chelsea triangle.

I don't wanna see a Dallas-esque Y&R. I wanna see a Y&R-esque Y&R. If I wanted to see Dallas, I would go see Dallas. I don't NEED to see two brothers fighting against each other on the forefront all the time, which is obviously what they have planned for Adam & Nick. I don't wanna see Adam front-and-center all the time.

I do NOT wanna see Jack & Phyllis back together. That was okay 10 years ago, but that ship has passed by a MILE.

I do not want to see Jack act like an arrogant, pompous, greedy, STUPID man, when he is NOT supposed to be those things. He has always been the more kind-hearted one as opposed to Victor, the one who just wanted to give Jabot back to his father. Jack was always the one I rooted for. Now they are painting JACK as the villain, to what? - make Victor look better?

I do NOT want to see Tucker & Jill become romantic. That is disgusting. They should have a brother-sister type of dynamic.

I am NOT interested in seeing a love triangle where Lily finally ends up with an AA male and people are all happy-happy joy-joy over it. It should NOT matter.

I am NOT interested in seeing Noah play this architype macho he-man who is the ladies man and everything goes smoothly for him and all the while the "weaker" male teen Fen, gets bullied and will probably end up being gay, because the character is more "befitting" to that role than Noah. Ugh the very idea of that is so INSULTING.

I am not interested in seeing Summer being another mini-Phyllis, who does whatever the hell she wants and suffers no consequences for it. AND in the end of day she will still be rich and have all the guys buzzing around her. No thank you.

And finally, why haven't they STILL fired any men??? It tells me it is a total cigar club behind the stage, and the thought of that is NAUSEATING. And all this REEKS of Jill Farren Phelps and the way she ran GH. It was all about the MEN.

Thanks.

Totally with Jamey regarding Avery. I've always thought Jessica Collins was a great actress and from the added characterization, not to mention her very own set and the renewed interest in Nick, it looks as though JFP/JG are positioning her at the forefront as one of the new regime's lead heroines rather than the show's go-to-attorney/thorn-in-her-sister's-side. If that's the case, I'm totally onboard; after five years of trying to shove Phyllis-as-heroine down our throats and then systematically destroying Sharon it's time for some new blood to emerge and Avery could be just the ticket. Speaking of Sharon, I am glad to see that situation being addressed as that character was ruined more than any other under MAB's tenure; it's obvious she's headed for a breakdown or brain tumor and I'm all for it if it gets her back to where she was before being shredded to tatters by Maria Arena Hell.

And as a total aside, thanks again for another pic featuring the always-hot Frank Valentini; talk about someone who needs to be in front of and not behind camera.....

Jamey heard you gave credit where credit is due and had to come over and take a peak. The writing has been great and it has pretty much given the entire cast a chance to shine. I thoroughly agree that a solidly written story where a baby is returned and a supercouple reunites despite the efforts of a deliciously malevolent villain is bound to be ratings gold. I appreciate you noting that even though you ship a different pairing.

I hope ratings keep going up between now that AJ is back, the Qs are being rebuilt and Robert is headed home (hopefully to reclaim his true love from that smarmy duke.)

I think it is vile and disgusting to put Nick and Avery together. So what are we to take from this; all along Nick has been eyeing his sister-in-law? The thought of these two together makes me wanna puke. And what makes it even worse is Noah and Summer and the rest of the town will think nothing of it. Its only Sharon who has the wear the scarlet letter.

Loving Y&R, noticing changes for the better already. The reason for the drop in the CBS soaps was in the past 2 weeks, Jamie didn't cover, they had large spikes of viewers. One more thing before I close: Yoryla, as I've posted to you before, just STOP watching if you are so unhappy with the Y&R>

Still don't like GH

But I've been enjoying Y&R and B&B.

I'm not sold on DAYS right now either.

But anyway, the ratings could be a lot worse, so I won't complain. I hope Y&R and B&B both rise though. Not really worried about B&B, because I know the ratings will rise for Susan Flannery's exit....I'm more concerned about what will happen AFTER that

Really - I can do that?! Why thank you for your concern, how very thoughtful of you.

Believe me, I have stopped. I usually don't even pay notice to the threads concerning it anymore, but obviously made this one mistake of responding to this one.
