Constance Towers Returns to General Hospital as Helena Cassadine

Sharpen your daggers, strengthen your parapet railings and double check to make sure you don’t have a doppelganger, because Helena Cassadine is returning to Port Charles. According to Soaps in Depth, Constance Towers is reprising her popular role as the deliciously evil Cassadine matriarch.

OMG … and here I started to think that the new regime doesn’t like Helena Cassadine. Well another crazy person in Port Chuck. I guess Helena’s come back is tied to Robert somehow!?

Don’t think that Laura is returning to GH any time soon. I wish she would but I guess Genie Francis has some odd ideas concerning the character. And adding to this that she costs A LOT of money … I sadly don’t see it happening. But hey, maybe if contract negotiations with Maurice Bernard go south maybe then Frank Valentini has the money to ask Genie back…

Anyway, must be a very happy day in the world of Luke Kerr. ;)

Please bring back Genie and Stephen Nichols as Stefan Cassadine,I’d be overjoyed. Genie’s ideas for Laura aren’t odd,she wants to have Laura be a strong woman not always having to prop Luke but have her own story. TG is paid big bucks and Genies always been thrown under the bus by his character and she was on the show before him and brought alot to the show before Luke ever came to be. TG gets all the great storylines and is never held accountable for anything. Laura needs to come back with her own agenda not as half of Luke/Laura. Neither Geary/Francis want that. Tony himself said he didn’t want Laura’s character coming back unless it would benefit Luke which is ridiculous. Laura doesn’t need Luke. Pair her with Mac,bring back Stefan, SN and Genie had great chemistry. Scott should come back as well. L&L have been done to death. Genie/Laura needs to shine in her own right, come on powers that be,make it work!!

I love the elegance and class she brings to every scene she’s in. She also has a gift for making every innuendo witty and enticing. The last return with the horrendous LIW storyline was so beneath her as an actress as well as her character. And I know that wardrobe will continue to dress her (as they do JE also), in suits and ensembles befitting her status. I enjoy looking forward to see what she’s going to be wearing as much as for what she’s planning. And I happen to think she’s had a hand in L’s test results with DR. V. After all, Helena has switched paternity results on Lucky, Nikolas, and Liz. Her MO is Spencer revenge. Why not go after another Spencer?… 0:)

This is getting off topic but I really want to add something. Tori, you are right that the character of Laura is valuable to the show and that Laura shouldn’t just return to give the audience Luke/Laura moments.
In my opinion however some of the statements Genie Francis made were unfortunate. I get that she doesn’t want to play the victim anymore but to see Laura coming back with an agenda or anything … I don’t know. It takes a good writer to pull that into the right direction & handle such a story right. We saw how it failed miserable on Y&R with the character of Genevieve – specially in the beginning.

But I don’t even think that is a big factor here. Truth is that Genie costs a lot of money. Of course so do others on the show but Frank Valentini has to make sure that his show stays on budget. This is were the politics come in. He can’t bring Genie back & get over budget. It has to fit money-wise.
The other thing is that Genie Francis already mentioned that she doesn’t want to return for some stint in the sweeps. That’s fine. That’s her opinion.
But to have her on contract the guys over at ABC have to play along. And as sad as it may be they look at the age of actors and actresses. Valentini reportedly had to fight to bring Finola Hughes back on contract. So there goes this.

And with all this it’s highly unlikely that a return of Laura is just an easy wish. Not to mention that bringing back people like Stephen Nichols and/or Kin Shriner in the process seems impossible. Not because writers/producers wouldn’t know what to do with their characters … they just couldn’t get it pass the network.
I’m proud of Frank Valentini for making it even possible to have people like Duke, Heather, Monica or Robert on our screens. Just would like for people to think a little bit more realistic. That’s all.

And to even return to the topic with this post: So it took Helena about 10 months to get a DNA test done!? ;)

@stefanstavros: I don’t know how possible that is, Helena Cassadine is a cartoon!!!

@soapjunkie88: I appreciate your analysis of the situation to bring Genie Francis back to GH. Somehow, I have a feeling she will return to our screens as Laura Spencer for the 50th anniversary.

Now if budget is an issue, there are several characters who could be removed from the canvas and those actors’ salaries made available. My list would be:

    1. Mousy Nurse
    2. Bitchy Nurse
    3. Trey
    4. Kristina (though I would recast)
    5. Shawn
    6. Starr
    7. Kate/Connie
    8. Johnny (I like the actor but see no need for the character)

Great news! However, I’m hoping this won’t get too cartoonish.
The one, although quite minor, problem for me has been the fact that there are too many villains. And not just a villain here and a villain there, but everytime it seems someone is “The Main Villain” it is revealed that they are working for someone else.

Heather is working for someone? At least she has a connection. Ewen was working for Jerry, so was Joe Jr. Jerry is/was working for Duke? Is it even Duke, is he working for someone, or being blackmailed by someone? Helena Cassadine? Does Allison Perkins have something to do with this.

So many unanswered questions, and I get that it’s supposed to feel like that so that we will be satisfied later, but I just really would like to know who is the REAL head honcho, the CEO and owner of all this. If there is some great master plan – what is it?! Wishful storytelling: If this all culminates in some BIG event on the 50th, I would not be opposed to it! ;)

@soapjunkie, I too feel Genie won’t be back full-time, due to all these reasons you listed. I’m just hoping she will at least be back on time for the 50th celebration. In whatever shape or form we get is fine with me!

I love Constance Towers but haven’t liked the way Helena has been portrayed in the recent past. Her last visit was over the top and if she had a moustache she would have been twirling it. I’m not ageist but Helena has to be way over 80 and it is funny that they have her wielding a knife on Luke and Holly. They could have simply ran away and she wouldn’t have been able to catch them with her gaeriatric bones and high heels.

I know the feeling is there are too many villians, but each villian also has a history with the other. Duke has good history with Anna/Robin, Faison and Helena were partners but then enemies. AJ has some connection to Duke, but AJ isnt all bad. The good guys in this fight will be Luke/Robert/Anna/Dante/John. Most of the ‘bad guys’ are really good and bad (AJ/Todd). Maybe we get Nikolas back at some point? With all these returns and the pending ‘return’ of Alan, which i hope is not just in spirit, Cartini is trying to take us back to when GH was at it’s best.

Could even consider bringing back Lucky for the good guys (probably have to be Greg Vaughan since JJ is otherwise engaged.

I’d add Jax in with the “good” guys, as well as I think RC/FV will bring Jerry back to round out the “bad” guys. Jerry’s body wasn’t found (just like Jason. ;), and they left Jax’s exit open ended… 0:)

I agree with you Yoryla, but I DON’T think the problem is “quite minor.” I’ve been complaining for a while that there are too many villains on the show now. We do NOT need any more and the sooner they get back to “normal” story telling, i.e. romance, intrigue, fertility problems, etc. the happier I’ll be. I’ve had enough killing/dying/DNA & baby switching to last for a long time.

    Just call me old fashioned…
