HomeTVThe Young and The RestlessRedaric Williams’ Tyler is Leslie’s Brother on Young and Restless! Jamey Giddens November 26, 2012 The Young and The Restless 56 Comments The Young and the Restless is moving to build a sexy, new black family, and we couldn't be happier! It turns out Tyler (Redaric Williams), the ambitious, young brutha who will mix it up with Lily (Christel Khalil) at Jabot, is a sibling of Leslie Michaelson (fan favorite Angell Conwell)! I think this is a hella smart move on Y&R's part. As much as I would love to see missing members of the Winters clan come home to Genoa City, that simply ain't happening. Good to know the soap is at least moving forward with adding a bit more color to the canvas. Onward and upward! Photo credit for Redaric Williams: IMDB 56 Responses Smitty November 26, 2012 Yes now I can get down with this. I’ve always liked Leslie and getting her a family would be good. I still want the current black characters used more on Y&R though. Log in to Reply stoney07 November 26, 2012 Hopefully they pair Leslie with Neil. Give Leslie a brother, and we have a ballgame here. Then there’s the slim possibility that Lily will be paired with Tyler…and then VOILA…maybe she’ll have a little more personality with him. *doubt it* Log in to Reply bishbay November 26, 2012 Conwell’s not even listed as recurring on some of the sites that keep track of that but her fictional brother is going contract? I think that’s dumb. The show needs more black women–make Leslie a main character. Log in to Reply aveRex November 26, 2012 This is a good thing…moving in a better direction. Give me more Adam too. Everytime I see her, I think about how she POUNCED on Neil at the Athletic Club. I would almost PAY to see a sex scene with her and Neil. LOL. Not to mention the whole “brush off your shoulder” move she did after a small confrontation with SOME character (Can’t remember who)…but clearly she added that. Wonderful actress, cool character, endless possibilities, which means she’ll be kept recurring and hardly ever seen. We’ll be getting more Lily-white Lily with no personality… Log in to Reply harlee490 November 26, 2012 Leslie is AWESOME and she is getting hellva’ lot of air time lately w\Neil. Who’s to say she won’t be offered a contract now in the processing of negotiating one. Log in to Reply hey mon November 26, 2012 Leslie is a gorgeous woman. She has flawless skin, knockout hair, a pouty mouth, and is a top-notch addition to Y&R. Stoney, I would pay to see Leslie have sex. Log in to Reply Divatude58 November 26, 2012 I like Leslie. Still think she is too yoiung for Neil but I am not against the pairing due to that…but I am against it due to her being a day player. Neil and Leslie will get as much play as Devon and Roxy. Is anyone on contract paired with day players or is it just a black male thing on Y&R? AC needs a contract like yesterday. Her and Tatiana Ali if you ask me. I want my Devon to have an onscreen romance. CBS/Y&R/Sony were not interested in her before and I don’t think that they are now. It’s just easier to use her as the person that Tyler is related to more os than Sarge. This way they won’t have to go to much into his background nore continue on with that story MAB was setting up with Sarge and Harmony. And he needs to be related to someone so that he can have someone to talk to and care about what he does. Personally, I have seen a lot more chemistry between Adam and Leslie than between her and Neil, and I have always thought she and Adam were a much better match. TIIC even seemed to be flirting with the possibility of pairing them a while back, but it never went anywhere. Of course. Same thing with Harmony and Tucker, who I thought had all kinds of potential, but no, she was only to be allowed into a lackluster coupling with serial-cheater Neil (although, Tucker isn’t much better in the fidelity department). I find it rather redundant, how every single AA female who steps foot on the Y&R set is automatically paired with Neil, who, in the four years I have been watching this show, has managed to cheat on every woman he was paired with. If so, that is absolutely reprehensible, and not to mention, downright racist! How in the hell does she get away with such bullshit, and why in God’s name would it matter to the audience what race her romantic interest is? As long as there is chemistry, that should be the one and only thing that she is concerned with. Can you label a woman a douche? If so, then she is definitely a huge douche! IMHO she is not that special, and there is a literal multitude of talented, unemployed young actresses out there who would be thrilled to portray Lily, and not pull some douchy-diva routine while doing so. (As for me, I can take her or leave her. While I do not think she “pops” as an actress, I also feel that is as much about the writing and characterization of Lily as it is about Christel’s performance.) But does anyone REALLY believe that this young actress has the clout on Y&R to dictate with whom she will be paired; that she will only be paired with white men; and that she will not be paired with men of color? Come on. Christel Khalil is not Eric Braeden or Melody Thomas Scott or Peter Bergman or Jeanne Cooper or Michelle Stafford. Dislike the actress and her performance, but please at least be realistic. Furthermore, on a different, but very related topic, I could not help but smile reading Victoria Rowell’s rants on Twitter a few weeks ago. And I especially appreciated when she tweeted that “Sony Exec” Steve Kent stated that “Dru is NOT creative direction Y&R wants to take.” The truth is that VICTORIA ROWELL is NOT the creative direction Y&R wants to take. Drucilla Barber Winters is a role that CAN be recast. And at some point in the next 6 to 12 months, I hope that Y&R does recast the role so that the show and, yes, Victoria Rowell, can move on. (To clarify, I LOVED Victoria as Drucilla, but this is ridiculous; that character and the fans appreciation for that character should not be “held hostage” due to “company politics.” And please recognize, though it is for our entertainment, at the end of the day, Y&R is a business. And the executives in charge will make (or sometimes attempt to make) $mart bu$ine$$ deci$ion$.) Log in to Reply david46208 November 26, 2012 @SoapSnob: it is a role that cannot be recast. This goes down with Erica Kane. There are some roles that cannot be replaced. Dru is one of them. Log in to Reply SoapSnob November 27, 2012 @david46208, No, it is not one of those roles. That role of Drucilla can and should be recast. If I recall correctly, you and I both very much appreciated what Brenda Dickson brought to the role of Jill Foster Abbott. So, could you ever imagine Brenda being recast? But, she was. And while Jess Walton’s Jill is a very different characterization, the essence of Jill is still very much there. And that is what we need, an actress who can summon the essence of Drucilla. Because the character is sorely needed and unless there is a divine act of God, Victoria Rowell will not be playing the role of Drucilla Barber Winters ever again. Log in to Reply Divatude58 November 27, 2012 If TPTB at Y&R/Sony/CBS thought that the role of Drucilla could be succesfully recast, they would have done so a very very long time ago. I think that they fear fan backlash. And then it is the obstacle of finding someone to do the part justice. I don’t think that very many big names in the business (Debbi Morgan to start) would ever take on the role. She told them NO when they hired her. Because let’s be real, why even go through to trouble of a recast when the person doesn’t have the ability or the name to pull it off. I think that Renee Jones has the name and skill to do it…and she looks exactly like VR. But I doubt she, after putting her stamp on her own role on Days that died off when she left, would want to take on “someone elses role” (Which is what DM called Drucilla). Log in to Reply pferrando November 27, 2012 It’s odd that the main story isn’t even about Lily, yet somehow the topic goes back to her and the bashing begins. I for one have always liked her in the character of Lily. Regardless of what hang ups the actress MAY have and I don’t think any of us were there to witness this, I’m going to give her the benefit of the doubt. She’s not going to be recast so I wish the harsh treatment of her would ease a bit. I am happy that they’ve made this new character a relative of an existing character and that character is NOT Sarge. They still need to write him out. I’d like an eventual pairing of Leslie with Neil, and then at that time maybe somehow we could get Dru popping up back in GC. I could see them going at it over Neil. Let’s get this story started. Log in to Reply david46208 November 27, 2012 @soapsnob: Let me break this down for you. You say: No, it is not one of those roles. I Say: Brenda Dickson was not a good actress. She was in the line of Ron Moss and Drake H. So almost any replacement was an improvement acting wise. When the actor has not put their stamp on the role then it is possible to recast. What Brenda D, did was to provide a certain “oddity” to the role that was liked. This made her popular. But Jess Walton who won an Emmy for the role, is an actor’s actor. But And yes I could have imagined a recast fro Brenda D. You Say: And that is what we need, an actress who can summon the essence of Drucilla. Because the character is sorely needed and unless there is a divine act of God, Victoria Rowell will not be playing the role of Drucilla Barber Winters ever again. I Say: Victoria Rowell did to the role of Dru what Susan Lucci did to the role of Erica Kane. As Agnes has said and even Bill Bell of Victoria Rowell, it was a collaboration. Victoria Rowell not only brought Dru to life, but she gave the character distinctive character traits and a characterization that daytime had never seen before. The women also rewrote her scripts so that Dru was true to form. Those lines that she would say, the way the actress would even shock her castmates and entertain them by them never knowing what you were going to get from her on set, that is what made Dru “Dru.” That you cannot replace. Brenda Dickson just did her lines as they were written. Brenda D. did not collaborate with Bill Bell to bring something special to the role… to OWN the role. So there could never be a recast of Dru given what Victoria Rowell did with the role. Given the way SHE personalized the role. The traits and the essence of Dru is something no other actor can play. And they have had 2 recast attempts and they never worked. So Dru is not coming back unless it is with Victoria Rowell and CBS/Sony knows that you can’t mess with the gold standard. Remember all this is Victoria Rowell changing the scripts, ad-libbing and bringing something to the role that no-other black actor in daytime has done to such a role. Can’t be repeated or even tried. Victoria Rowell http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNO4iIs_Op4 Dru 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wy8YgCMjeVg&feature=plcp Dru 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jKZZOh4nHs You cannot recast that type of work. She is the only black female legacy character on daytime right now….demographics. And I don’t think Sony wants to give that up. Log in to Reply Marcelle November 27, 2012 I don’t think Drucilla would be impossible to recast, but I think it would be verrrrrrrry difficult. I think there’s a reason tiic haven’t attempted it by now, just like I think there’s a reason they haven’t just gone ahead and said Dru’s remains were found to finally (as finally as a soap can anyway, lol) put to rest the constant chatter of bringing the character back. They don’t want to completely close the door on that character, yet at the same time they haven’t been ready yet to attempt a recast. Say what you want about Dru, but the return of that character would bring eyeballs to Y&R, whether just an initial spike, or sustained, I don’t know. But ratings would momentarily (at least) be affected. With GH inching closer and closer to overtaking Y&R’s number one spot in that almighty 18-49 demo (the ONLY demo that matters), this show will have to start rethinking things really soon. Log in to Reply hey mon November 27, 2012 There is no way that either Lily or Dru can be re-cast successfully. It is well know that I have seen every show since 82. And a whole lotta shows from 79-82. Davetta Sherwood tried to re-do Lily, and it did not work. LML brought Shemar Moore back for 19 weeks, to do the big reveal on Lily’s parentage back in the mid-2000s. The whole thing fell flat, based on the unbelievability of Davetta as Lily. Victoria Rowell and K St John had to carry the entire reveal themselves. If Drucilla Barber could be re-cast, she would have been. Since Dru fell off that cliff, we have endured much in the TPTB trying to find Neil a woman. Tyra, Karen (who actually worked), Sophia, Harmony — all have not lasted more than 12 months. Let’s give Leslie and Neil a chance. As far as Brenda Dickson goes. She was ‘Diva’ Jill. Deborah Adair was ‘nice’ Jill. Jessica Walton is ‘tough’ Jill. Bill Bell wrote Jill for the actress, not mainly for the character. Same with Ashley. Eileen D was semi-slutty, crazy Ashley. Brenda ED was nice, sweet, vulnerable Ashley. Shari Shattuck was bi+chy, mean Ashley. I hope Ashley is re-cast. It was done before successfully, and can be done again. The only way to recast Dru is to get someone who is not from the daytime circle because I don’t see anyone who is being willing to do it. And if they do get someone from outside the cirlce, it will have to be a big name to have the fandom to carry it off. Because let’s be real, the hate will be flying from everywhere (except for maybe the cast who doesn’t want VR back but then that woiuld change if she becomes popular). The person will need independent support. And up and comer can not be cast as Dru. That would be a disaster. It would have to be someone like Vivica Fox. But would she even want the thankless job. I think Keesha Sharp could pull it off but I don’t think she is popular enough of an actress to withstand tha barage of drama that is sure to come. The more I think about it the more I realize that while Sony/CBS may be black balling VR, black actresses are also black balling Sony/CBS. Interesting. Log in to Reply lance_prentiss November 27, 2012 If TPTB are unwilling to bring back VR, then I would prefer that the character of Dru not be recast. Log in to Reply SoapSnob November 27, 2012 Jumping back into this discussion… Again, Drucilla Barber Winters can and should be recast. (Victoria Rowell was good in the role, but she does not own that role.) I used to think that either Lisa Raye or Jasmine Guy would be the perfect Drucilla recast. But, because there will be “outspoken behavior” if the role is recast, the role needs to be recast with an unknown (or lesser known) actress. And if the aforementioned black actresses are loyal to Victoria Rowell and do not want a paying job (though none of them would be a good or suitable recast) then hire someone who will see it for what it is – an opportunity to work. Log in to Reply stoney07 November 27, 2012 I’m sorry, but I don’t see a Dru recast. I think she has made that role her own, and no actress, no matter how great, would appease those fans who have been clamoring for Victoria Rowell to return. I’d rather there be NO DRU than someone else pretending to be Dru. Not to mention that Victoria Rowell was the one responsible for the Dru personality that we all knew and loved. SHE added her own spark to the character. She gave storyline suggestions….she made Dru Dru, along with Bill Bell. That’s partly why the magic has never been created with another woman. Sophia could have had Dru’s personality. The writing in the beginning definitely seemed that that’s what they were going for, but the actress, while I didn’t think she was as bad as some said, just didn’t bring that SPARK to her character that VR brought to Dru, and if TPTB recasted, it would be the same thing. I don’t see why they can’t just get Angell Conwell a contract, and allow HER to be with Neil. Write for them!! That’s the key! That’s partly why Neil’s other stories have failed…they won’t write anything for him consistently. He NEVER has a frontburner story and he hasn’t had one since Dru’s “death”. The stories start, they drag along once a week until the point that we just don’t care anymore. It’s unfortunate. But instead of recasting Dru, why cant these “capable writers” give Leslie even MORE of a personality. She has definitely put a little spark into her character in just the short time that she’s been seen. I’d have her brother come to town and I’d have him have the hots for someone like Sharon in the beginning. Since Leslie has been Sharon’s lawyer, she’d speak against that…and she’d become sort of the overprotective older sister. Then why not have her sort of desire to put Lily and Tyler together, although Lily is married to what’s his face…Or maybe he’d come to town and have the hots for Roxy…ANYTHING is possible really!!! I just hope they get written for. The same way we see Phyllis/Adam/Chelsea/Sharon/Summer EVERYDAY, we should be seeing Neil and the gang too…let’s make them interesting again, and it doesn’t take Victoria Rowell to do that. I’d LOVE to have her back, and I’m one of her biggest fans, but if that’s not possible, just leave Dru alone and build on what you already have!!! While simultaneously saving yourself some money from hiring a new actress… Log in to Reply missmuffett41 November 27, 2012 @hey mon: I could recast CK’s Lily with a dishrag and it would be considered a step up from her dull”acting”. It’s stuff my daughter and friends twitter over, and they do. I just think, for ratings, sake, they should try to feature them more. Cause as far as acting is concerned… The great Michelle Stafford is having her Phyllis character taken down the road, it looks like, into having sex with Jack’ son, Kyle. A near-suicidal personality moment for Red. And Ms Actress Sharon Case has to endure these multi-year story arcs. One year she’s Town $lut. The next year she’s taking up with her kidnapper. The next year, she’s behind bars for murdering Skye, someone who should have paid for her mis-deeds anyway. Now she’s walking around crackers, after spending the summer trying to run onew of the largest companies in the world. So it’s not all about the acting.. I know there are rapid fans of Lane but maybe both actors are getting bored. Could she be recast ABSOLUTELY! Is it happening PROBABLY NOT…unless a front burner story for Lily is being written and CK’s time (by being recurring) is effected because of scheduling…well that’s when Sony has an opening why she would be let go.
That is the only way I see the role being recast. Someone unknown name who sees this as an opportunity that they can’t afford to pass up. But being a no name almost ensures that the recasting will NOT go well. It’s like a catch 22 for Sony/CBS/Y&R. Log in to Reply hey mon December 1, 2012 I could see maybe a new re-casted Abby coming back to Genoa City, and having a ‘good time’ with young Tyler. I’m not sure why Josh G would want Lily to have a romance with a new contract player. How could the romance be featured seriously if Lily is just recurring. Maybe somehow Eden could find her way over to Jabot, and have a romance with Tyler. That would certianly get Kyle all fired up and jealous. We’ll be getting more Lily-white Lily with no personality…
ROFL….you certainly know your Y&R! This show is in need of more black females in frontburning s/Ls. I agree that Angell Conwell has proven herself as an actress and should’ve been put on contract a long time ago. But glad to see the role of Leslie is being expanded and they’re giving her family. I just hope this isn’t just smokescreen(i.e. Harmony and Sarge) to bring in more black viewers, then the characters are barely seen. I actually want to see some real acting, and not just little filler scenes(like we’re getting now). As for Lily, beyond bored with her naive silliness. I know that Tyler is being brought in as a love interest for her, but something tells me that won’t go anywhere. Lily and Cane will be back together before you know it. So I hope that won’t be the end of the Tyson character. Log in to Reply Divagalore December 2, 2012
@SoapSnob: it is a role that cannot be recast. This goes down with Erica Kane. There are some roles that cannot be replaced. Dru is one of them.
I can’t agree with that at all. Drucilla and Erica were both very lively characters. Lily is barely given a personality lately, so she can be replaced. I just think TPTB at Y&R are comfortable with the actress, and that’s why she’s been allowed to be recurring, instead of being recast this time around. Log in to Reply Divagalore December 2, 2012 All these writers have to do is write for these characters. KSJ has been with this show for over 20yrs, there’s no excuse for him not to be given consistent S/Ls. I’m another one who would love for VR to return, but I don’t think the Winters need Dru to be interesting characters. In all honestly, several of Neil’s pairings would’ve worked out, only if TPTB didn’t get so lazy, and just put him on the backburner for several weeks at a time. How can any character grow with very little attention? Another thing is most of Neil’s pairings don’t make much sense, because they are often just thrown together with very little thought. I just say give Neil a life with intrique and romance. If I can watch Nick, Adam, Jack and Billy have time for Love/Family/Work/Scandal etc…I want to see the same thing happening for the Winters characters. I still like Devon, but hate that they keep angry all the time. Time to change that too, and expand his character. I’m also hoping these characters, Tyler and Mason(who I still don’t have a clue about) aren’t a bust just to gain ratings. I want them to be written for as well. Same for Leslie…I want to see a real legitimate relationship build between her and Neil. I’m so bored of his romances going nowhere, and over with at the blink of an eye. Considering this new regime is talking about more diversity with the show, I hope they are ready to give these characters personalities, opposed to just being cardboard figures.
