Mark Pinter on Y&R Showrunner Jill Farren Phelps: “She’s a Woman Who Has a Great Allegiance to People”

In the January 7 issue of Soap Opera Digest, veteran daytime actor Mark Pinter details how his friendship with showrunner Jill Farren Phelps helped him snag a recurring spot on The Young and the Restless.  Said Pinter:

"You get jobs generally because of where you've been and if you're a director or producer, you want to work with people you've worked with before," Pinter notes. "I'm very appreciative of Jill. She's a woman who has a great allegiance to people and I don't know anybody who has worked with Jill who doesn't have great allegiance to her as well."

Pinter will be playing Marcus Wheeler, a ruthless senator who runs afoul of Genoa City titans Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) and Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) on Y&R. The character sounds similar to Grant Harrison, the devious politico Pinter portrayed on Another World — where Phelps served as executive producer from 1995–96.

Phelps also brought Pinter over to General Hospital, where he played the role of corrupt Agent Rayner. I guess if the lady has this many FOJs (Friends of Jill), she must have been doing a few things right over the years!

I loved him as Grant actually the only one I knew until saw the repeats on Soapnet years ago and Mark can play the shark senator. As Grant my fave hookup was Cindy they were hilarious together.

I don’t know Mark Pinter but I think he’d look great with Jess Walton on his arm. Jill Foster Abbott was a hit with bad boy Colin, why not a ruthless Senator next?

Don’t care about the Senator with Jack and/or Victor because they have plenty of the cast to interact with. I love them both but Jack & Victor have had plenty of story the last few years & still do today, whereas Jill hasn’t had anything for years. I’m glad she’s back in GC but she needs more to do than baby sit Katherine & Tucker.

Isn’t Jill the CEO of Chancellor Industries again? If so,she’s a GC business titan too and has been working in the top tiers of the GC business world as long as Jack. I hope JFP doesn’t forget the women in REAL business stories like MAB did. Bill Bell had the woman plotting, planning, and ambitious about their careers in the eighties. I find it bizarre that now that women actually have top spots in business in the real world they are nowhere to be found on Y&R. How do they expect young women to watch a show that resembles a 1950s business environment but present it as today’s world.

I like Mark Pinter, and in the past he hasn’t minded speaking truth to power. But let’s face it: JFP gave him a job, so he’s hardly objective at this time when it comes to his (temporary) boss. We’ll see how he feels if and when his role has ended.

That said, I doubt his former co-star, Alice Barrett-Mitchell would agree with his assessment of Ms. Phelps. Neither would Anna Lee, though obviously she is unavailable for comment.

I was thinking the same thing, LOL! Her and Stephen Nichols. Not that I care. Neither one of them belonged on Y&R, anyway.

Jill Farren Phelps idea of 2012 *business woman* is lip glossed Lily. Don’t hold your breath seeing Jill at Chancellor Industries anytime soon. It’s clear they have NO INTEREST in showing that company on Y&R. For whatever reason, they never have.

My first thought was “Tell that to Genie Francis, Maureen Bauer on GL, and Frankie Frame on AW!”

It seems to me Jill has made more enemies over the years than friends. She nearly destroyed OLTL and GH, and I’m sorry for Y&R’s fans that she’s been hired for that show. I hope the execs who hired her realize their mistake before she can inflict too much damage there

What? he’s got a spot on Y/R so he’s kissing his boss’s ass.

Jill Phelps epitomizes why there are only four soaps left and what does Y/R do? Hire the show Killa’ Oh she will &%$@!-up this show…you betcha’

I’m already hearing how the show has improved since she’s taken over as EP…yeah…ok I never thought a woman can be more misogynistic
    than a man…until this bint..she hates women.

Yeah, Mark Pinter portrayed a ruthless politician on Another World — just a redux. Can someone get JFP to explain why some characters/cast are literally kicked to the curb while she finds a place for new cast of questionable talent? Yes-I am talking about Ignacio Serricchio — that pretty face accompanied by a totally talentless body. He has gained no acting talent since they killed him off GH. Shall we expect to see Steve Burton re-surface on Y&R, too? The s/l of NYC detective (dirty or not) spending as much time in GC as this character has is a stretch–even in soap opera land.

Also, what is in store for Leslie’s brother and Gus’ brother? Seems as if they brought Darnell Williams and Debbi Morgan on as teasers and then cast them both off.

The one good thing that JFP has done so far is burn down the Newman Ranch. The penthouse is decorated in a modern (maybe even hip way). I have often wondered if Y&R was simply using some old prop warehouse with left-over furniture from defunct shows.

Until the Victor and Nikki got the penthouse, the only set with a modicum of style was Phyllis’ condo/apartment. Katherine Chancellor’s decor suits her perfectly; the old Newman ranch’s decor suited Victor perfectly-but not Nikki. Nick’s Tack House (is that short for tacky?), since it was once a barn, it should be rustic, but not necessarily dated. Adam’s recently purchased mansion; Sharon’s house; as well as Victoria & Billy’s house all scream old and dated. None reflect what one would expect for the homes of a young people.

I’m glad someone else feels this way. When he was an arc for Ghost Whisperer he was awful. I’m a fan of Jennifer Love Hewett, but I’ll admit she’s no Meryl Streep. She is talented, however, and watching her have to act against this fool…the look on her face the whole time was WTF?
