HomeTVGeneral HospitalNew Young and Restless Hire Steve Burton: “What Happens at GH Should Stay at GH” Jamey Giddens January 15, 2013 General Hospital, The Young and The Restless 28 Comments Don't expect any self-indulgent, tell-all memoirs or thinly-veiled novels about his time at General Hospital from Steve Burton. The actor, who has joined the cast of CBS Daytime's The Young and the Restless, declined to throw shade at his former soap stomping grounds in an interview with TV Guide's Michael Logan. TV Guide Magazine: If GH had tried harder to accommodate your personal life would you still be there? Burton: I don't want to point fingers. I know there are a lot of disappointed fans. They don't really understand what goes on behind the doors. They don't understand why I wouldn't go back to play Jason if I'm ready to work again. But what happens at GH should stay at GH. Classy! Burton went on to explain the sticking point in securing a deal to continue with GH was how the frequent flyer miles he planned to accrue heading back and forth from SoCal to Nashville would impact production. For more of Logan's chat with the former Jason Morgan—where he asks fan to cut him and his new Y&R alter ego Dylan McAvoy some slack—click here! 28 Responses jcmellencamp78 January 15, 2013 Good riddance!! GH doesn’t need Jason Morgan when we have Laura Spencer, Scotty Baldwin, Lucy Coe, Kevin Collins, Anna Devane, Felica Jones-Scorpio etc… Log in to Reply ANGELWENDY15 January 15, 2013 I have been a GH viewer thru out the good and bad times (which the last 2 years with the Mob story was getting very stale and boring).I wish Steve Burton all the best in his new role on Y &R. I can understand some fans feeling that he deserted GH but I think it was the best thing to happen to the show. Sonny has more family storylines and the Mob is in the background, Sam is moving on, hopefully with John, and the Q’s are getting the best storyline they had in years, with the great Lucy Coe showing up.Some how, things work out for the best. I love GH, which a year ago I couldn’t say that. Log in to Reply Katiebug9624 January 15, 2013 My lord just let him go! Log in to Reply jcmellencamp78 January 15, 2013 Agreed AngelWendy! Log in to Reply Kendall Troy January 15, 2013 Apparently everyone loves this man….I don’t get it. GH survived without him and Y&R will not feel anything because of him. Has there been any show that has really, over an extended period of time, felt a ratings surge because of bringing on a “Star”? I guess it’s good for the publicity. But, folks, GH is okay without him. Let’s just hope Y&R is okay with him. P.S. – I’m sick of this fast track telenovella that is in the same place in each interview since last year. Let’s talk about it after there’s a deal! Log in to Reply Katiebug9624 January 15, 2013 I don’t have anything against Steve though I do wish he’d stop doing interviews. Maybe he’ll turn out to be wonderful on Y&R but I have a bad feeling its going to be a lot like Beth Ehlers. Log in to Reply SavePortChuck January 15, 2013 Ummmm… there is, at the very least, 1/2 million fans who aren’t disappointed. GH’s ratings have surged since you and your BFF have left. Go do you thing on Y&R or Tennessee or whatever. We DON’T care!!!! Log in to Reply Coffee_Junkie January 15, 2013 This man strike me as the kind of person who acts like his sheet doesn’t smell. Log in to Reply storm28 January 15, 2013 Maybe it’s just me but I don’t see this as remotely classy, his making sure all blame for his exit gets laid at the feet with GH and not him personally and his not giving any details so his fans can run rabid with speculation with all the ways they may have wronged him. Classy isn’t eluding to things that happen behind the scenes. Log in to Reply SoapArmageddon January 15, 2013 GH is thriving without him. Let’s see what he brings to the table (or TV screen) on Y&R. Log in to Reply soapbaby January 15, 2013 Decent, brief interview. Best of luck to Steve Burton. He made a business decision he thought was best for him and his family. I’m looking forward to a healthier, toned Burton to play a military vet. I think a romantic triangle can be a good, soapy tool. I like the Sharon/Adam/Chelsea angst. If Y&R was interested in casting for Dylan, getting Burton in the role is a coup. GH is thriving without the character of Jason Morgan. It’s best for all soap fans if both GH and Y&R do well. Log in to Reply SoapyBoy January 15, 2013 Let the boy go, already! I’m sure he had to go for his own personal growth. Wish people well instead of being bitter. There have been actors that I have enjoyed watching though out the years that have suddenly left a series for whatever reason. My life was not over and I discovered other actors to enjoy. It’s the circle of life. Log in to Reply liason4real January 15, 2013 I’m going to miss SBu. However, I am happy that HE sounds happy about his future endeavors. Log in to Reply angrierblackerman January 15, 2013 It’s SB’s decision to make in this case, and people should just let him do what’s best for he and his family. Frankly I don’t miss Jason one bit. The character has sort of run its course with me. Also, Steve Burton had been phoning it in for the past five years where Jason was concerned, churning out one wooden performance after the next. Let’s hope SB brings something new to this new character. Can he even act as any character other than Jason Morgan? The only things I have seen him in are GH and as Evie’s Boyfriend on Outta This World…he may be stuck in permanent Jason mode. Log in to Reply pferrando January 15, 2013 He hasn’t even appeared on Y and R, and I’m so sick of hearing about it. DC surely has other news for us. Log in to Reply samanthadelayed January 15, 2013 Thought I would miss him, turns out I don’t. Sorry, I just don’t. I don’t think they will recast Jason, but if they do I won’t cry. Log in to Reply Camp is not a sustainable model January 15, 2013 @Marland Fan: It’s funny you say that because his outfit in the picture froma fan event is total douchebaggery style. Especially the hair. Everything says LOOK AT MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3o9YSpI_yAs In fact that should be the theme song and title to Y&R’s reality TV show about the backstage drama: Look At Me: Backstage at The Young and The Restless. Log in to Reply SZima January 15, 2013 I’m glad Steve/Jason is gone. He was a killer for god’s sake, so why is anyone sad? We wanted less mob, now we’ve got it. So lets CELEBRATE Steve’s departure. (Also pray the mob stays on the back burner.) I wish him well on Y&R. I just wish he would have been honest and up-front about why he was leaving. I think that’s the reason people are so angry with him. Everybody needs a change now and then. Own it. Log in to Reply Camp is not a sustainable model January 15, 2013 @SZima: When he found out that Momma Hen JFP was at Y&R he jumped at the offer when she called. With the new team at play at GH he was not gonna get his way. Frank V. must have said: Int: Frank V’s office at ABC Studios ————– Frank V: We’ve got to cut the budget here and cannot afford to keep flying you in and out on your terms or catering to your schedule. Steve Burton: We’ll i’m out of here. Frank V: Don’t let the door hit you on the way out. Steve B: Do you know how much I have done for this show. If Jill Farren Phelps– Frank V: Well she ain’t here. There’s a new sheriff in town and i’ve been hired to clean up Port Charles. So either you are in or you are out? Steve B: I bring in the ratings! Have you seen those Nielsen numbers! Frank V: Outdated model. Steve B: Well it is still here and I– Frank V: One Life To Live beat General Hospital in the ratings when I was there before it was canceled. Anything else you want to say? Steve B: You’re gonna miss me when i’m gone. The ratings are gonna suffer. And when you come calling for me to return to help you save the show. I’m not gonna answer. Because I’m Steve Burton. The Steve Burton. I’ll land safe somewhere, where they know how to respect a talent. (Steve heads for the door.) Frank V: Give Jill my best at The Young and The Restless. (Steve turns and shoots daggers at Frank with his eyes.) -cue the dramatic music and fade to black- —— Next Week on One Soap To Save. – Steve has an emotional moment as he cleans out his dressing room. Meanwhile, several cast members are having a party celebrating his exit. Here is a sample from it. Int: Nancy Lee Grahn’s dressing room. (Steve Burton walks by and overhears Nancy saying “So long sucka!” and burst in.) Steve: Champaign?! Balloons? My career is over at GH and you’re having a got-damn party! Log in to Reply SoapArmageddon January 15, 2013 Jill needs to be very careful that she doesn’t alienate too many Y&R viewers with these moves. She doesn’t have the credit that the last name Bell gave Maria for 5 years. Log in to Reply Camp is not a sustainable model January 15, 2013 @SoapArmageddon: That much is true. And she better remember what Diva’s and Divo’s she’s dealing with at Sony. Log in to Reply SoapArmageddon January 15, 2013
M….Look At Me: Backstage at The Young and The Restless.
Genius! I’d watch the hell out this. You know they’d try to come off all nice and modest; but their real egocentric selves would come shining through sooner or later. Log in to Reply blake3b January 15, 2013 So he was upset that the new and improved GH would not make him the golden boy anymore so he bolted. The returns of so many old favorites, high ratings, and obviously better morale there at show speak volumes. And what is JFP doing at Y&R? Firing people left and right when she got there and the show is still so-so. Yeah bringing someone like Steve Burton will help lol. Log in to Reply pferrando January 16, 2013 I like SoapArmageddon’s comment… Josh is writing the show, but Jill’s EP. She was quoted as saying she wanted to make the show more alluring, but that doesn’t mean turning long time viewers off. There are NOT a lot of new fans to be had. Bringing in “names” from other shows…YOUR old show…and having then take up screen time DOESN’T work. This should be it Jill. Listen, please. Log in to Reply shirls429 January 16, 2013  I love Steve Burton and yes I will miss him on GH but,I am happy that I can tune into Y&R and watch his talent:) Log in to Reply JASAMMABBY January 16, 2013 I love Steve, the character of Jason and my Jasam.. However I am happy he seems happy with his move. I hope wish him well and hope he finds success in it.. That being said I can’t help but feel the reason he left was because he wasn’t written as St. Jase anymore. Over the years the Unholy Trio took over the soap, Sonny and Carly were always written doing bad things- but Jason kept the writing of the one who could never make mistakes. Women chased him and went crazy over him. It just seems once he was written making mistakes he wanted to jump ship. Sadly I won’t follow him to Y&R mostly because I barely have time to watch GH. So not going to follow a whole other soap just for him.. GH is doing awesome with out him. I love that my girl Kemo is now getting way bigger stories now that he is gone. I do hold to one day see them as a family.. Not holding my breath.. It ended OK with me- he left knowing Sam was the love of his life and he was going to be father to Danny. What more could I want!! Congrats to Steve!! Thanks for the years of enjoyment!! Good luck!! Log in to Reply stefanstavros January 16, 2013 I’m officially writing my last comment about this issue. I’m so over him and his childish, duplicitous behavior. We all know he was like a spoiled child who didn’t get his way(not money but being the center of attention on the GH set) so he stomped off and followed Mamma Jill. Yuck! Just do your lame story Steve, fizzle out and go. Log in to Reply Leave a Reply Cancel Reply You must be logged in to post a comment.
