HomeTVCBSY&R’s Jess Walton on Jill and Kay’s Rivalry: “I Was The Stupid Coyote That Got an Anvil Dropped on His Head” Jillian Bowe February 21, 2013 29 Comments When contemplating the four decades of feuding between Genoa City’s grande dame Katherine Chancellor (Jeanne Cooper) and hellcat Jill Foster (Jess Walton) on The Young and the Restless, cartoon characters don't necessarily spring to mind — okay, maybe during the Brenda Dickson years. To celebrate Y&R’s upcoming 40th anniversary, Walton, who has played Jill since 1987, compared her character's epic battles with Kay to the classic Looney Tunes rivals, Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote. Walton stated: "Jeanne and I used to talk about the Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote. She was the Roadrunner and I was the stupid coyote that would get an anvil dropped on his head every single time! We’d read the scripts and we would see the build happening and we’d see Jill getting sure and sure of herself and then bragging to everyone and then, clunk! It would always happen!" To find out what Walton's favorite moments from her time on Y&R have been, watch the clip after the jump! 29 Responses truthtakestime2000 February 22, 2013 she is my favorite ever. darn great actress. them at the end is just adorable. love you jess walton!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Log in to Reply SoapArmageddon February 22, 2013 Jill has always been her own worst enemy. Far more than Katherine has. Log in to Reply Restless Fan February 22, 2013 I love both these women! I would love for Sony to release a 40th anniversary DVD set. Log in to Reply hey mon February 22, 2013 Jill Fenmore is a classic. Log in to Reply AHeart4Fiction February 22, 2013 Katherine/Jill are seriously in my book, a super-couple. That whole clip had me in stitches especially the part when Katherine throws the alcohol on the rag Jill is holding & Katherine’s expression as the flames grow! I wish I was older just to have viewed their history firsthand. Log in to Reply pennywise555 February 22, 2013 No upcoming Jill & Kay story to announce with this clip? Why does it all seem to be in the past? They WERE a super couple? Why is it all past tense when they are both on the show? I realize Jess Walton is recurring, but does that mean she won’t commit to a story? I would think Josh Griffith would have plenty to write given Jill & Kay haven’t had a story in over 3 years. Billy, Lauren, Chance, Jill as a savvy business woman, and Jill with a man…. so many subjects to choose from. Jill fits in everywhere yet she is nowhere she should be. Jill doesn’t work once every other month. If anyone deserves a story for the 40th Anniversary it’s Jill & Katherine and the viewers that have followed them for years, but I don’t hear of anything coming up. Y&R can’t even have a story between the only 2 Y&R characters that have actually been around 40 years for the 40th?????? I’m so jealous of GH, they have numerous old time favorites returning for their 50th, with many staying longer for an extended story . We get a trivia contest instead of a story? Booo! Log in to Reply Cornfed February 22, 2013 Taken on her own account, Jess Walton is a fine actress and TECHNICALLY better than Brenda Dickson. But has any one Jill (as played by Jess) /Kay scene raised my blood pressure? Not a single one. With Brenda Dickson in the role — the campier, shoulder pad mid-80s aside — i can’t even narrow it DOWN to one scene with those two, they had so many! It bordered on lesbianic Shakespeare! It may just be me, but i’ve never sensed any real chemistry that even got close to Dickson and Cooper. Jmo! I love Jess Walton, but Brenda was in your face as Jill and no holds barred, in the end that’s probably what got her canned, she thought too much of herself. You can find some old clips of her on YouTube, if you look hard enough you can find Jack/Jill in the snowstorm. But I will look up Brenda Dickson as Jill, thanks for the info! Log in to Reply pennywise555 February 23, 2013 I watched Jill from the start and love both Jill’s but Brenda’s Jill was wearing thin towards the end of her run, and maybe that’s part of the reason why she was recast. Brenda’s Jill became un-rootable (?), just a villain with no other redeeming values. Early on Jill was a innocent and after Phillips death became a victim of Kathrine abuse. She had to toughen up quick to survive and then she wanted revenge. I always wanted Jill to have her revenge too until Jill became so nasty that Kay was looking like a saint, when she was no such thing. IMO Jess Walton’s Jill incorporated the young innocent Jill back into the character and it made her human again. So Jill was now capable of love as well as plotting, scheming, and bickering, and she wanted justice again just not revenge. A Jill that had love for her kids, and wanted to love them, even though she didn’t do a good job of it in practice. I never felt any warmth from BD’s Jill later on. I think JW helped Jill grow and mature; she added complexity and more life to the character. She was also more believable as a successful business woman where BD’s wasn’t. The clips of 30 years ago are fabulous, and everyone is young and beautiful, but I’m not so sure how long it would have lasted. I can’t imagine BD’s Jill lasting another 25 years, everyone would have been sick of it long before now because it was getting a bit much way back then. Log in to Reply 1titanman February 23, 2013 Jill is the #1 reason to watch yr, because she the longest original character on the show. I always love Jill and her ways, and what she was about. My problem is Jill should be running Jabot, because she loved the company and was a great businesses woman. Jess Walton has define the role of Jill, and when I started watching YR I came towards to the end of BD run, but yes she was campy and over the top. There a few BD scenes on YouTube from the 70s and she played Jill totally different from the 80s. However the writers wrote that mess, but they wanted an Alexis clone and it was the 80s. Jess has brought alot to the role of Jill, but these last two writing teams have not done Jill justice; LML and MAB should have their laptops taken away from them, because the character of Jill is damage goods- Log in to Reply harlee490 February 23, 2013 Jill! Jill! I loved all of her incarnations and yes my favorite Jill is Jess Walton. The only thing that would be missing for the 40th is the flashback history between Katherine & Jill. Y&R can’t because to use early flashbacks would mean Brenda, they can’t which is a shame. To see very early beginnings of Jill and how Brenda played her was such a difference from ’70s and 80′s. Just happen Jill is still on canvas. Log in to Reply pjc722 February 23, 2013 I liked the way Brenda Dickson played the part of Jill. Later on in the story when the actress and bill bell found it hard to work together (2 sides to all stories) she was let go but the character of Jill was played beautifully as a cold and calculating woman of power. Loved it. Watson came on board and although she was cool and calculating still she took on a part of being a little loose and shouting a lot … I still love Watson and want her to remain on the show but to tone down the anger scenes a little. I have always wished that the shows made her an equal to jack and victor in power. I love the rivalry with Katherine but wish Jill was more fleshed out today. Log in to Reply tashikins February 23, 2013 Love Walton and I agree she should have more of a role. She is a powerful woman and needs to be a Victor and Jack rival as pjc says. Log in to Reply hey mon February 23, 2013 Love Jill, and I feel that by now she should be the Queen of Genoa City ruining Victor’s life. That’s what I would be doing if someone was constantly brutalizing my son like Billy. Jill should be making ol Vic’s like a living hell. Log in to Reply pjc722 February 23, 2013 I forgot about mentioning Victor always attacking Billy. So many times over the years people have threatened to take revenge on Victor for what he orchestrates on others yet they never do. I remember after Jack was shot, he and Paul met at the Abbott mansion and they shook hands on taking down Victor for what has happened to Patti, Paul’s sister. And then with Jill… not knocking her as a mother… but when it comes to Cane the character goes to bat for him more times than I find real (seeing that he is not her son and has lied numerous BIG TIMES to her. With Billy, with all that Victor has orchestrated against him I never see her confront him. Once I believe she walked into his office but like Paul and Jack, nothing came of it. Log in to Reply pferrando February 24, 2013 WHY can’t this original character have a FRONTBURNER story? I just don’t get it. Who couldn’t write something for Jill? Log in to Reply alstonboy4315 February 24, 2013 Brenda who? I am so glad that Jess Walton joined this show 26 years ago. She is absolute perfection, the consummate performer: talented, humble, versatile, kind and a hard worker.(characteristics that Miss Dickson, for the most part, seemed to lack!) Now why can’t the new writers come up with a decent story for her? Oh I know why, because they have let Adriana “The Twit” and Avery Clark practically take over the show. Log in to Reply akbad806 February 24, 2013 Akbad is bad in action, baby!!!! Somebody give me the tea… Log in to Reply yojoromo4469 February 24, 2013 ALSTONBOY, as usual you are right on track about the new writers. The “Twit” should just be run out of town. Terrible actor. Avery Clark has about taken over the show, and nothing spectacular about her either that I have seen. Dylan, who I had never seen before, is just a very dull character in my humble opinion. Of course everyone knows, I can not stand the dirty cop character. Log in to Reply akbad806 February 24, 2013 Astonboy, baby, have I missed you. I could kiss you. It’s been so long since we hashed it out about Y&R, but I’m back and I’m here to stay. And yo ain’t lyin, Adriana and Avery, along with Chelsea, are eating Genoa City up for breakfast and won’t sell no extra. Ugh…makes me sick. I knew JFP and JG would have their favorites, but why they choose such anemic characters to focus on is beyond me. Y&R is still in transition and I understand that, but this viewers kinda misses some of the campiness of the MAB era. I know I may be in the minority, but I find JG’s writing to be staid ad uninspiring. Not saying I want MAB and her cronies back, just saying that her version of the show was more entertaining. Since this new regime, I hardly get excited about the show anymore. Anyone agree? Log in to Reply hey mon February 25, 2013 akbad, I agree. Give me the over-the-top tantrums of Sharon trying to take over Newman, Nikki walking around with a Vodka bottle, and Adam looking like The Joker anyday, over this plodding, slow, tripe (and that is a put down to cow’s stomach). That was the end result of Jack taking over Newman Enterprises. A House of Fashion? In a city on Lake Michigan that isn’t Chicago? Yeah right. So Jack just gives up the reins to one of the largest corporations in the world, so he can start a clothing line? Paging John’s ghost…paging John’s ghost. And the end result of the Jamie/Fen/Summer story-line. Fen is on the run (maybe), and Jamie is going to live with Ronan, and Summer is chasing after her half-brother Kyle. Ultra-disappointment. Not saying that Fen had to end up like psycho-Ricky, but now HE’S the victim, cause bullied Jamie tried to kill himself. I am ultra-pi$$ed. I have never been bullied in my life, and 3 out of 4 of my kids are bullies — and it should not have ended this way. Fen should pay, and I guess he won’t, cause neither is Summer. Adriana. Need I say more. Noah has gone from top-notch acting, defending his Mother, nursing her back to health; to a sniveling idiot involved with a flat-chested girl. Yeah, I said it, flat-chested. She can’t act, her brother is a psycho-ex-cop. Like the son of a multi-millionaire and grand-son of a billionaire get involved with these kind of people. Stupid. Should have been Noah and Kyle fighting over Eden these past few months — Abbotts vs the Newmans carried over to the next generation! Oh well, missed opportunity Josh G. Why did Jill come back? To sit around at the Chancellor Bed & Breakfast and bi+ch about life? She should be in there, trying to make Jabot #1, or taking the reins at Chancellor. Anything. Send her back to Australia/Oregon. Log in to Reply yojoromo4469 February 25, 2013 HEY MON, a great post and I wish I could have said it so eloquently. I am an over 30 year viewer and not happy with the new producer/writers at all. Some of the characters are just terrible and story lines not much better Log in to Reply shane1969 February 25, 2013 I enjoyed all the Jills including Deborah Adair (she was actually my first Jill). They all had their own way of playing her, and did it well. Log in to Reply pferrando February 26, 2013 I agree hey mon, we could have one over the top character right now. My issue with MAB is that she had the characters all over the place. Lets split up Chloe and Kevin and let both go back to their ways. Chloe was a cu#t when she first came on, and Kevin was very unstable. It’d be believable and in line with the history of the show. I think Josh is showing he can slowly transition story/character, so I’d hope he could handle the kind of character you are wanting. Log in to Reply hey mon February 26, 2013 Kevin needs to start lusting after Carmine immediately, or maybe Mason. That way The Show can have something new that hasn’t been told ad infinitum. I think that Kevin could easily be a bottom-type sort of guy for both a male or a female (don’t tell me Chloe wouldn’t like that!) Cause this whole bit that Kevin and Chloe are going to start stealing from Katherine really suck$. What I really want to see is Kevin and his Momma come to terms with him being a bi, cause I’m sure that Gloria would love to go shopping with her son. Log in to Reply SoapArmageddon February 26, 2013
…I think that Kevin could easily be a bottom-type sort of guy for both a male or a female….
This is waaaaaaay too much. Not even the admittedly gay posters on this site go into this much detail. Log in to Reply hey mon February 26, 2013 Sorry, I did not mean to go too far. I am just hoping that Y&R could some of the realism that has come into the rest of television. Let me re-phrase. I think that Kevin, who is probably a bi, could be happy with both Chloe, who is a dominating woman; or Carmine, who is a male.
