Report: Christopher Goutman Hired to Direct Episodes of New All My Children

Soap Opera Uncensored is reporting controversial ex-daytime executive Christopher Goutman has been hired by Prospect Park to direct episodes of All My Children. I swear, this genre takes two steps forward, then three backwards.

While I don't begrudge anyone a job, is it really a smart move to hire the dude who brought a time-traveling, 200-year-old man to the final season of Another World, before going on to run As The World Turns into the ground? This is the same cat who didn't realize what a national treasure he had in Martha Byrne (ex-Lily).

Okay, so he'll reportedly only be directing, my fear is Goutman will somehow figure out how to claw his way to the top of these reboots. He's done it before, and to a bad end for the Procter and Gamble soaps.

Dear God in Heaven!!!

At first it felt like with all these new castings that PP has been on the lookout for new blood but of course keeping some vets. I guess they may be afraid to go outside the box in other areas though since they have hired former Soap writers and now a former soap killer as a director.

Jamey, I couldn't agree with you more. Goutman managed ATWT into the creative gutter for years. Goutman is egocentric enough to not work a deal out with Martha Byrne or even ask her back for the show's finale.

Why is that the soap industry recycles the worst of the worst more often than the best of the best?

In defense of Chris, he did use to work there as a director. I see this more as an appropriate homecoming than some methodical worming up the ranks to eventually run iAMC. But that is just me.

This is a sad and scarey statement. Seems like they are hiring all the same people behind the camera that helped drived the industry into the ground. I guess they were probably easy to hire since many haven't worked since their shows went off the air. If this genre is to survive they really need new blood.

Keep his ass in the director's chair. By the way, where has Martha Byrne been hiding? :/

Yikes. I guess it's good that he's a directer and not an EP or writer, though.

@JameyGiddens To be honest, he's only director, if he was hired as Executive producer, or head-writer, then we'd definitely have the right to be terrified. Considering Goutman directed AMC from 1987 to 1996 (I think he is actually a director by trade) then I'm not too worried yet; how much damage could he do as a director. The moment he steps foot into that writers room, or EP position, I will turn of my PC/TV...

Why do I not recall a 200 year old time traveling man on the last year of Another World? Maybe I wasn't watching as closely or something cuz that does not ring a bell at all.

As long as I don't see the name Ellen Wheeler associated with these reboots I'm OK.

Jamey, I share your fears as well. This is the same man that ran my beloved ATWT into the ground, and I wouldn't put it past him to find a way to headwrite or EP AMC as well.

Alstonboy, EXCELLENT point, which is a big reason why so many soaps are gone!

Marland Fan, I was really, REALLY hoping that Ellen and Chris had been put out to pasture for good. Unfortunately, PP seems to think that Chris would be a good fit as director. Do they even know the damage and carnage he and Wheeler for that matter have left behind? Apparently not.

I'm just thanking my lucky stars that I didn't have anything in my mouth that I could have choked on because this news is choke-able! And as our first poster of this thread said and I will say it as well, "Dear God in Heaven!"

Dear fans of AMC i'm sorry you're now stuck with Goutman directing your soap i guess they couldn't find a fry cook who wanted the job.
my only hope is that he is never allowed to advance past just directing.

Le Sigh.

That's just sad if they felt that this is the best AMC could do.

Not only did he mishandle and disrespect Martha Byrne but he told Scott Bryce that he basically didn't understand the character of Craig Montgomery, when Bryce originated the character of Craig! And Bryce popularized the character to the extent that he was nominated for Emmy Awards and made Craig and Sierra a beloved couple on ATWT during the 80s!

Based on those two things alone, I don't trust Goutman's creative reasoning.
A director is supposed to guide actors in creative choices during any given scene and I just don't trust Chris Goutman's creative choices.

If Goutman was the last director left with experience in soaps, I still think AMC should've gone outside the genre.

Stamford, CT is less than 30 minutes by train to NYC. You mean to tell me they couldn't find some talented directors??
I would've chosen an indie director or a theater producer over Goutman.

I wish fans of AMC luck with this one. Hope Goutman doesn't play true to 'type'.

Oh my god, he's just directing at a soap he's been before, all of you seem like he's EP. directing the episodes is not the same thing as being EP. He's just a member of the crew now. It's like you all are looking for any excuse to wish these shows out of existence before they even begin, just because Cartini aren't involved in this, I bet if they were, all of you would be saying the exact opposite

@Jabot1991...."He's just a member of the crew". Really? The director isn't kraft services, a PA or hair & makeup. The director chooses to lead a scene in a specific way. It is a valuable creative role. The director determines hows the script will be interpreted in the scene. DGA directors are well compensated to be leaders (bosses) on the set. Tell Ben Affleck, Ang Lee & Steven Spielberg that they are just members of the crew.

Wonder how long it will be before Goutman releases a statement telling fans he doesn't care what they think about "All My Children" and they shouldn't be watching every episode anyway!..Looks like he finally got his wish: a soap that isn't on five days a week, fifty-two weeks a year.

What is the word for a show killer that goes to work on a show that hasn't even gotten started?...a "showbortionist?"

Cartini have kept that lunatic soap-killer Jean Passanante somewhat contained on GH (though I still notice that most of the weaker episodes feature her writing prominently; she's such a talentless person) so there may be a chance that Goutman won't kill nuAMC before it starts. But I wouldn't bet on it. Why oh why is an industry he helped to dismantle still giving this horrible man work?

My God!!! RUN FOR THE HILLS!!!!! I TOTALLY agree with you Jamey! This guy is the kiss of death to Daytime! I started watching ATWT in 1972, LOVED it through the MARVELOUS Douglas Marland years and SUFFERED through the last, sad years of a once great soap with this guy as Executive Producer. Storyline development under CG was like throwing spaghetti on the wall and hoping something would stick! THANK GOD Ron and Frank have Jean Passanante on a leash at General Hospital. She, of course, was Chris' partner in crime with regard to the TOTAL destruction of ATWT!!! Can anyone say Ameera, Zac and Zoe????????? Chris Goutman shouldn't be allowed 100000 feet near a soundstage, let alone a Director in Daytime..EVER!!!! Borrowing from The Washington Post: Prospect Park, for hiring a totally untalented, incompetent IDIOT as a Director of AMC, you had the worst week in Daytime! Congrats or something.

This isn't the REAL Chris Goutman. The real Chris Goutman is still on the run for murdering ATWT in cold blood a couple of years ago.

So I'll hold out hope. Maybe this imposter will do right by AMC. And its a good thing he's the director now...and not writer/EP. At least YET...

With all the amazing positive soap news we soap viewers have been blessed with since last year, there has to be SOME penance. There has to be some rain on our parades.

The next you know Dena Higley will be spotted on the OLTL set and Charity Rahmer will be cast as Colby Chandler.

Folks what have we learned from DC in the last few years...That you can write crap and kill a show and bounce over to another series. It doesn't matter if your record good or bad as long as you put a lackluster product out in the process your guarantee a job.

Meanwhile in the real world if you can't perform at a job they get rid of you. I tell you life is a crazy thing- It a sad day for AMC web series and you think La Lucci would come back to that show-runner killer-

Goutman's true colors shown through when he dumped Martha Byrne from ATWT and the show spiraled downward into oblivion in less than two years. Why P&G left him in control was always a question, but the results were the same as Another World's, crash & burn. To think that the once mighty ATWT withered away under Goutman should make him a last choice by any stretch of one's imagination.

exactly, but he won't be the ONLY director they've got, everyone is making it seem like he's the ONLY director they've got. Yeah it's like EVERYONE is trying to find a way or excuse to say PP is going to fail
