Wishful Storytelling: Why Now is The Perfect Time For Warner Horizon to Do Knots Landing 2.0

The decorated Knots Landing police detective moved back on the Circle with her assistant district attorney husband Kyle (As The World Turns and All My Children alum Lamann Rucker) a few years earlier. The couple became fast friends with Kate and Brian. Julie thinks Kate is a damn fool to let a gorgeous, flirty young woman move into her home.

Kate insists Julie is being silly. Betsy is Molly's older sister (Gary is the young woman's biological father). She's like family! Besides, it's  laughable to even consider the son of Abby Fairgate involved with Gary and Valene Ewing's daughter, right?

Julie's 14-year-old daughter Patricia has an insane crush on B.J. Cunningham. B.J., unbeknownst to his parents, has taken to getting high on "sizzurp", a prescription strength codeine coup syrup beverage, mixed with fruity candy. Beege, who has been largely ignored by his workaholic parents, and tennis superstar older sister, loves to get high on the potentially toxic concoction, referenced often in his favorite hip-hop songs.

Patti would do absolutely anything to be with B.J, including trying out the deadly drug that has her mother working 12-hour shifts trying to figure out who's been pushing sizzurp to Knots Landing's youth.

Will Julie crack the case before the devastating impact of sizzurp hits too close to home? Can Kate and Brian's marriage survive Hurricane Betsy? Will Greg learn about Paige's secret son? Is Lilliemae (Julie Harris) still trying to make it as a Country and Western singer? The only way we'll find out is if Warner Horizon readies a Knots Landing reboot, and fast!

Just saw JVA on Rupaul last night. She looked great. Yes, the plastic surgery is still there, but her lips have calmed down since she debuted as Gloria on Y and R.

With the success of Dallas, I don't know why a modern reboot of KL couldn't work.

But please God keep that damn loon LML AWAY from it.

I love Knots Landing but I want a Dynasty reboot first. Their is so much potential to make Dynasty 2.0 into a massive success.

Also, YAY! My first post.

I'd love a Knots Landing 2.0; while everyone else back in the day seemed obsessed with Dallas and Dynasty, I was loving KL and Falcon Crest. Of the four, KL was definitely the most consistently satisfying on a pure creative level; there were very few dips in quality during that show's run.

Judging by her work on Dallas and how enormously satisfying it has been, Cynthia Cidre definitely has the chops to become the next Shondra Rimes. I'd love to see her head a rebooted Knots Landing.

One of the smart things she's done was nab bigtime telenovela stars like Kuno Becker and Kate del Castillo (la Reina del Sur) for roles on Dallas.

Jamey not only do they need to do this but they need to make you the head writer/EP. Perfect stories and casting for Knots 2.0.

While Knots Landing was my favorite of the prime time soaps, this is not the Gary and Val of Knots Landing (where Bobby and Betsy were named in the aftermath of Bobby Ewing's death in the Dallas dream season). This is the Gary and Val from the Dallas world (where Bobby never died). Their histories may be wildly different from what we saw on Knots.

Having said all that, I would LOVE to see a Knots Landing spinoff in the new world where Bobby never died. The one BIG problem, though, is that Dallas' ratings are dwindling, and there's a very real possibility that Dallas won't get a third season (especially without Larry Hagman), so I can't realistically think about a Knots spinoff ever happening (especially since the Knots DVD sales have stalled at season two). Realistically, I don't think Michelle Lee or Kevin Dobson need to dust off their suburban-wear.

Jamey, that is a really good idea. Remember, the first "Knots" premiered with Gary and Val reuniting after 17 years apart, what better way to have Knots 2.0 premiere than with Gary and Val reuniting for a fourth time. I wonder if TNT, Warner or whoever owns the rights is looking at the guest appearances of Ted Shackelford and Joan Van Ark and the new "Dallas" and wondering if there's still any interest there for "Knots." I'd say, YES!! Release the rest of the original series on DVD in order to prep for a continuation.

I watched from its premiere in December 1979 (I was a freshman in high school) all the way through to its series finale in 1993 - THE BEST NIGHTTIME SOAP EVER!!

KNOTS LANDING would easily fit into the scope of SOAPS coming on board tv right now! Dynasty was too over the top and WAY WAY tooooooo much money. KNOTS could easily fill the gap left by Desperate Housewives (which I think owed more to KL than any other soap but KL was never given credit) and that REVENGE had every opportunity to fill but has opted to become an ALIAS with uber wealthy people.

(Love revenge)

I drive by the cup-de-sac every once in awhile (it's in the San Fernando Valley) and they painted Val's iconic yellow house a dull shade of brown. That will definitely have to be fixed before they start up again!

Sounds great! Laughing out loud

Thanks for the link to the Dynasty 2.0 WS too, had to read it all at once. That is still my favorite soap from the 80's!

Knots was my favourite too. I started watching as a child and found it the most relatable. And there were black characters as semi-stars.

House of Plantagenet, what is your relationship to the royal line? I am a direct bloodline grandson of Henry 1, Henry 2 and King John.

Just think, could have been William and Gloria Bardwell, had not Joan VanA got the willies.

Bring back 'Falcon Crest'!

Interesting ideas! My only creative criticisms would be that there are too many kids named after other characters which would make it difficult to follow when the original characters come back or are mentioned; and that the cast of characters is a bit too incestuous. Most kids who grow up that closely don't fall in love, in my experience; also, where's the love? Who's the next generation Mac and Karen who are forever devoted to each other?

True! LOL I am a sucker for that. Patricia, Julie's daughter is named for her mom, who is dead. But yeah, it would be odd when Claudia comes to visit and Lil Claudia comes into the room to see Grammy. Ha ha.

My Mom and Dad grew up on the same street, their mothers were good friends, who carpooled to work together, and they fell in love as teenagers and had me.

Who's the next generation Mac and Karen who are forever devoted to each other?

Julie and Kyle would be the tentpole couple for the next generation marrieds. I envision them as a black Mac and Karen, dependable, tempted from time to time, but never straying.

Love it, Jamey! But the one storyline I would like to see is to have it revealed that Laura didn't die but was in a coma for a while and once she woke up she had no memory of her life past her marriage to Richard (who was still madly in love with Laura) and he has been living with her and keeping her being alive a secret unbeknownst to all of her family and friends back in the cul-de-sac.
Paige can kick rocks because Greg needs to reconnect with his real one true love.

I have the 6 most recent eps of Dallas on the dvr, but haven't been fully enthused YET, but do want to see JVA and TS so i'll get busy and catch up. The show's main draws for me are seeing my favorite Linda Gray )after missing her for so many years), capable Julie Gonzalo, Josh Henderson's sexy body and face, and Patrick Duffy's surprising yet impressive acting. I'm not a fan of Brenda Strong, but don't mind her tough as nails character.

Agree with both TVGord and PJC. Knots was the most dependable/durable of all the prime time soaps, quality wise. 14 years and STILL won its timeslot when it ended (against LA Law on NBC), but ultimately became too expensive to produce, to keep a quality product on the air. (You could see the dwindling visual quality the last couple seasons; it wasn't near as pretty to look at, and much less of our favorites onscreen due to $$$.) I'll never forget being totally swept up in the Paige and Tom story, only to have the following season (after their almost wedding) shifting to psycho Bruce Greenwood having her on some boat? WEIRD! And Anne's homeless story totally being dropped and sold out with the cheesy Benny story. And that wind machine and other crap, YIKES!

I gotta disagree tho re: LML. IIRC, Knots actually fell apart once LML and her team left to create and oversee Homefront. That AND a combination of cutting costs to survive led to its demise. LML and her hubby were still controversial to some as writers, but they really oversaw some of KL's best stuff. Lawrence Kasha & Mary-Catherine Harold deserve a lot of credit for KL's success but rarely seem to be mentioned re: the heyday of the show.

Enjoyed your story ideas Jamey! Beer

I agree IOWAHAWKEYE...

I wasn't old enough to watch KL during its first run, but I caught majority of the episodes on SoapNot back when they actually aired soaps. With that and the clips and recaps of the show, I think LML did good on KL as well. I never thought she was a horrible writer, I Just didn't think she was a daytime writer, especially not for Y&R. In fact, I've always said if she would've started her own soap, it probably wouldn't have been that bad.

Knots Landing is and always will be my all-time favorite show. I loved seeing Gary and Val in Dallas. The Knots couple may be having their issues, but it's just a bump in the road of their journey. Even Mack and Karen had their marital problems throughout Knots Landing. I enjoyed this article too. Though I'm not sure Bobby and Meg would end up together since they were growing up (as we last saw them in the reunion) more as siblings. Still a fun thought. I would only welcome a Knots reboot if it included ALL of the main players and the famous cul-de-sac!

I agree with you Richard. Knots Landing is my all time favorite show. I could see a reboot with Bobby, Betsy, Meg, Erin Molly Ward, and Daniel Avery. Brian Austin Green needs a job too.

Nicolette Sheridan had THE best bod on TV back then, but then she got a tad too skinny toward the end. All the stuff at the Sumner group, the murder of Peter Hollister, Jill Bennett, Val's babies, omg what delicious stuff that was. Even the recaps on YouTube give me chills! JVA didn't really get to show all sides of her acting ability on KL but we got to see a bit more of that on Y/R for a hot minute.

My superficial dying wish is for Shout Factory to buy and distribute the last 12 seasons of KL -- i'd buy at least 10 of the seasons!

I was a big fan of LML's work on Knots. It wasn't until she got a hold of Y&R that I wanted to take her out back on the veranda for a talkin' to. And had I known what MAB would do following her, I would have shut my mouth, and gladly watched Clearasil Springs...
