Is Elisabeth Hasselbeck Staying or Going at The View?

It can’t be fun being Elisabeth Hasselbeck these days. First came the reports she was being fired from The View. Then Barbara Walters denied Hasselbeck was leaving. Now the New York Post is reporting that Hasselbeck is in fact on her way out.

“Dumping Joy Behar, who was there 16 years, and Hasselbeck would be the fastest way to do it, they decided. After giving Behar the bad news last week and letting her bow out gracefully, someone leaked the Hasselbeck thing. Some enemies she has on the show saw their chance to get back at her. Barbara was spitting mad that it got mishandled, and called off the firing over [last] weekend.”

While we heard Hasselbeck would go when her contract is up next year, the source added, “It could be earlier, because the ABC brass believes the show needs to be younged-up fast. They easily could coax her to go early.”

Meanwhile, the New York Daily News dropped the tidbit Behar may do a tell-all comedy show about her years on The View.

I believe this is just the sleazy New York Post writing a story last weekend completely on speculation because they knew The View was going to be in reruns this week, and people can do a lot of buzzing while the co-hosts aren't on the air.

I can't see Barbara Walters making such an announcement of support for Elisabeth just last week, only to do an about-face before this season ends. Even if they had plans to dump, I don't think they'll do it now.

No one is irreplaceable on the show, but I like her (even though I largely disagree with her). I'm going to miss Joy, too, but we've seen this show survive some great co-hosts over the years (particularly Meredith Vieira and Lisa Ling).

Hey Gord, you are right about the Post. But someone please tell me. Was Joy forced out? Was she asked to resign. If that was the case its so not nice.

"Younged Up" ???!??! Elizabeth is the youngest on the show. Granted I don't agree with her all the time, she is the youngest member on the panel. If they want it younged up they should consider letting Barbara simply go behind the scenes and let Whoopi be the oldest member in her 60s.

There's speculation that she was being dumped, giogio, but they were giving her the option to say it's her decision to leave. That's the same thing that they TRIED to do with Star Jones, except that Star decided to handle her mess in the way that showed the least amount of class possible. (not a fan Wink ).

I want to believe it was Joy's decision to leave, but I've been through a couple of years of older people being shuffled out of jobs because they were either getting too old or making too much money. The temptation to hire someone who's younger AND cheaper is irresistible to the "bean counters".

With 18-49 being the only real age group that matters in broadcasting, anyone over 50 who's still hanging in there should be very grateful (and/or very worried).

nysam, that's a good point. I guess Whoopi has a bigger name, so they want to keep her around as long as possible, but really, she can't moderate the panel (can't read the prompter, can't segue to commercial very well, can't introduce a new topic without it being awkward). Also, I don't see Brooke Shields as being particularly youthful, either. (That's another reason that I question the legitimacy of the Post article. It mentions, Brooke, Ali Wentworth and Christie Brinkley, three of the most recent guest co-hosts on the show. I think some writer was sitting around watching The View and just started making up a story. It's not out of the question for the Post.)

Eva Longoria should replace Joy. She is super liberal and a Latina. Then add Megan McCain for a young conservative voice. Then replace Sheri with Monique.

That's a terrific idea! She's moving more into the production side of television now, and doing The View would keep her in the public eye and leave her plenty of time to work behind the scenes on her own projects. She's also drop-dead gorgeous, which doesn't hoit (as Bugs Bunny used to say). I can see Eva and Elisabeth getting into some great verbal jousting over political issues. I'm getting all tingly just thinking about it. Wink

@TV Gord: It would be like Erica and Brooke if they were on the panel of The View.

They could never afford Eva Longoria.

Thanks Gord. Joy was very graceful if that were the case.

If they get rid of Joy AND Elisabeth, the show will be a total bore. Elisabeth and Rosie made the show a success. IMO, they need to drop Sherri. She adds nothing to the show.

David, that's a good choice, I forgot all about Eva, she's a liberal who's not afraid to speak her mind, she's actually pretty funny, and she's Latin, which is something they haven't had. She can still do her producing on the side.

As far as Elisabeth goes like I said before, it may not be Barbara or Bill's decision but ABC might want her out. Like some of the others have said bring in Meghan McCain, she's well-known, conservative, but isn't afraid to go against them sometimes. It's obvious that ABC has seen the Talk's ratings, and want to go younger. If Joy was forced out then she's playing it just right.

The NY Post may be a sleazy rag, but it's our sleazy rag. Word to this: it's in every break room or folded on the terlet tank in every government office in the NY/NJ area. Cool

I can't speak to the quality of it's entertainment news, but for hometown flavor, it can't be beat.

I read on another site that Babs is upset that the leaks are out that Lizzie out! The magazine said that Babs trying to save face for Lizzie. This whole thing reminds me of the whole Star Jones saga.

Damn David! That's a show I want to watch. Smile

(BTW, the Post is indeed sleazy but it seems to have spies or access to every production team in New York. It frequently gets things right.)

I guess ABC did not learn their lesson when they cancelled two soap operas at the same time.

All five women on The View get on my nerves from time to time. Babs needs to semi-retire, Joy is moving on, Whoopie has managed to revitalize her career, Sherie and Elisabeth both have outside projects.

ABC doing more "tinkering". Geez.

They should replace both with younger, fresher points of view.

The GOP is in trouble getting their message out there, so a younger Conservative with more progressive social views could actually help and also be an interesting change of pace.

They argue just to argue sometimes, but that's not bringing in the ratings. It seems almost staged sometimes.

I don't watch hardly ever. I liked Rosie (not for her political views) but for her personality. I'm a Dem, but I also found her to be beligerent.

I'd like to see it become more entertaining and much less politics as usual.

Elisabeth is a fairly progressive conservative. She supports gay rights, including the right to marry. She's more fiscally conservative than anything and she has agreed with some of the things President Obama has done.

Some people point to Meghan McCain as a Republican, but she's really not. She was a registered independent until her father ran for President, and even then, she said she was changing her affiliation to Republican as a symbolic gesture of support to her dad. She probably hasn't changed it back because she now gets traction (and plenty of speaking engagements) as a Republic who really isn't. She's a liberal in conservatives' clothing.

Also, Meghan has admitted that she knows very little about the economy, so she avoids commenting on that. That's something should couldn't get away with saying on The View, if she were truly going to step into Elisabeth's role as the sole Republican on the panel.
