Fresh Prince’s Janet Hubert READS Wendy Williams in an Open Letter!

Don’t expect former Fresh Prince of Bel-Air mom Janet Hubert to invite talk show host Wendy Williams over for a girl's brunch anytime soon. The All My Children and One Life to Live alum tore Williams a new one, after watching former onscreen daughter Tatyana Ali be grilled by Williams on her self-titled talk show, about what exactly made Hubert leave the 90’s sitcom.  Hubert stated:

Wendy Williams, or whatever you are supposed to be, I’m not quite sure. I’m writing you yet again, to appeal to your sense of womanhood or manhood as some suggest. Please close your mouth about things that you know nothing of.

Now, I watched your show to see dear Tatyana Ali sadly to say, fall into your trap. She even brought pictures of our days on the show from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. You know most people watch you just to see what heinous things your mouth will say compared to what an overflowing volcano will spew forth on that day. Now perhaps other black women have allowed you to berate them and continued to support you in this manner of madness and rewarding hatefulness. It seems to have become the norm and has taken over our society completely. But I, Janet Hubert, sat there and watched you tell the world that I was not a nice mother. I’m thinking to myself, the only person who has the right to say that is my child. So I sat there and watched you like some devilish sinkhole swallow up Tatyana Ali You reduced her to a child sitting their attempting to keep some semblance of dignity about her as you pried and invaded her life until you got what you wanted.

I’m glad someone snatched Wendy’s tacky lacefront……though noone will EVER do it as epically as the now dearly departed Whitney Houston did. Aside from looking like a pre-operative transexual, Wendy picks on EVERYONE…….from Beyonce to Anne Hathaway. She has no class and no sense of decorum. She does nothing but tear down other black women and she’s hateful.

Wendy is always trying to stick her nose into matters in which she knows nothing about, tossing around baseless accusations for shock value and to build her “brand.” I find her to be disgusting.

And it also troubles me that with all the money she’s made she’s still wearing that same tacky, discount-store hairpiece. Time for an upgrade, bew!!! ;)

I can’t stand Wendy Williams. I find everything about her irritating, from her bad wig to her voice. She is definitely a mean-spirited person.

Well, with all of the crassness, spelling and grammatical errors, no one will accuse Janet of letting a publicist write this, that’s for sure. It sounds as though there is no class in this story (with the possible exception of Tatyana Ali, depending on how she answered the questions).

Wendy Williams is as unclassy as they come, but that’s what her fans expect from her, so as long as there are people to watch her, she’ll be there. I only do my part by never letting her traipse onto my screen.

Wendy would be the first to admit that she is a truly classless individual. The woman knows her whole career is built on wallowing in dirt.

Poor Janet. Has she worked at all since Fresh Prince?

I commend her on her words. To say madness and hatefulness has taken over our society is exactly what I have been saying but never found the words to put it so beautifully as she did. I have seen that show and watch her talk. She rips people to shreds with a twinkle in her eye. I cant quite figure it out. Maybe she thinks its what people want or is entertaining. I dont know how she thinks, but maybe everyone should take a step back and realize the mean things people say can drive many to sadness. Someone should ask her to give up her talk show. She makes people nervous. And most do not even desire to look at her.

I have to agree with a LOT of what Janet Hubert said about Wendy…

However, I can’t completely co-sign because Ms Hubert dragged herself in the process of dragging Wendy Williams. The implied digs about Wendy being a “man” are so tired and played they’re no longer funny. She gets no points from me there as far as reading someone goes. Then she referred to Tatyana Ali in the beginning as a “child” – even though she’s a grown ass woman over 30. Plus, I don’t think Wendy Williams is trying to be Oprah. Wendy’s more like Howard Stern than anything and I think she knows that. I think the only thing Janet Hubert proved here is she’s just as much the diva as she’s been rumored to be. Of course people are going to ask about Hubert and Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, because it was the biggest gossip of that show’s tenure and she was the only castmember that was recast. Duh! I’m sure someone like Karyn Parsons wishes someone would mention her in an interview.

I guess my thing is this: either take the high road or wallow in the mud. You can’t have it both ways, Ms Hubert!

@everyone: A sistah with class does not have time to speak on such foolishness. You’d never hear Diane Caroll or Diana Ross speak about people who didn’t like them. And they’ve had a few enemies lying about.

Instead all she did was to play right into Wendy’s hand the same way she said Tatyana Ali was drawn in to it.

But more so when you are going to try and tell someone off trying to add some Christian references is not the way to go. Because the bible says, “judge not…”

I don’t know if you have TVOne, but there is a show called Life After. Janet Hubert was on one of the episodes and it confirms that she was a DIVA. It also confirms that there may still be bad blood on her side. I am sure Will Smith hasn’t thought about her in years. She does spill some tea though.

@tvgord…it sounds like she is a frequent watcher of Wendy Williams though. She was very descriptive of some of her habits.

Here’s Hubert’s full statement. Read it as though it were being said by Julia Sugarbaker. You’ll be in stitches! ;-)

    Dear Wiggy, (I mean Wendy)

Recently on your show, you felt the need to finally as you say it put an end to the mystery surrounding my departure from a show that I did so damn long ago that I don’t even remember why I departed.

Wiggy… William…whatever you are supposed to be, I am not quite sure really. I am writing you yet again to appeal to your sense of womanhood, or manhood as some suggest, to simply close your mouth about things that you know nothing of.

I watched your horrible show to see dear Tatyana Ali, sadly to say fall into your trap, she even brought personal pictures of our wonderful days on the show The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Most people watch you just to see what heinous things, your mouth… which I compare to an over flowing volcano, will spew forth on that day.

Now perhaps other women, other black women have allowed you to berate them and will continue to support you in this manner of current madness, by rewarding hatefulness. It seems to have become the norm and has sadly taken over our society completely.

But I… Janet Hubert, who have vowed to try and not do this ever again (God forgive me) sat there and watched you tell the world that I was not the nice mother? I sat there and watched you, like some kind of devilish sinkhole swallow up Tatyana Ali, reduced her to a child sitting there attempting to keep some semblance of dignity about her as you pried and invaded her life until you got what you wanted.

You are such a demon Wendy…you are a wicked, awful, conniving, sinister, spiteful, jealous of every other woman, simply put Wendy… you are a virus… and you are not, nor have ever been a true woman.
Your audience thirsts for the blood of others as they are prompted, to clap, hoot, and holler at your garish shoes, wigs and clothing. You will have stars on your show and demean them before they even make it back home.
Who died and told you that you were reborn as Oprah. You want to be Oprah so damn bad you would kill for it, and you will kill anyone to achieve success. You will never be another Oprah, Oprah lifted her audience up; she exuded an air of class.

But you Wendy, you are not even in my league, this is so beneath me to even bother with someone like you, but you asked for it, so… here you are.
You will not destroy all the hard work that I went through in the last decade to clear my good name. I simply put will not allow you to do so. I am a lady and a real one, Wendy…you just messed with the wrong sister.

I am a classically trained actress…funny for all that you and the world claim I have done, I should have had my own show like you… correct, because there is nothing I could have ever done in this lifetime in my career that could equal the vulgarity, and ugliness, and hatred that you spew in one single day.

Here is my advice to you Wendy…learn to sit in a chair and stop fidgeting with yourself on camera, wipe your giant teeth off camera…put sweat pit pads under your arms…if your sweater is pulling honey until there are lines across your chest… it is too tight. Take that fake ass blond hair off your head or stop playing the race card, cause you are coming off like a wanna be white girl who will never be white.

I have never seen anything except for the hogs I used to feed before school, slobber at the mere sight of food so I even question your humanness. I have never seen such a display of self hatred Wendy. Just a couple of more suggestions to you…stop dissing all of us who have embraced our natural hair as I and many others have, and yes Wendy it does belong on the red carpet, whether you like it or not. I feel so sorry for you… sitting on your big footed tacky throne everyday while millions of people laugh at you…not with you…there is a big difference. Nobody cares what you think about their lives, but we do care about what you put out there about us.

My heart saddens at how women especially black women have embraced your evil after all our struggles in society. You and your kind have set us back at least 100 years.

    - – - – - – -

This is not to defend Wendy, but exactly when, where and how did Janet spend the last decade clearing her name? The last time she was all over the media, it was to slam Will Smith when a bunch of Fresh Prince cast members had their picture together. It was less than a-year-and-a-half ago that she said:

“There will never be a reunion, as I will never do anything with an asshole like Will Smith. He is still an egomaniac and has not grown up. This constant reunion thing will never ever happen in my lifetime unless there is an apology, which he doesn’t know the word.”

It doesn’t sound as though she’s doing much to clear her name. In fact, her disingenuous comment that she doesn’t even remember why she left the sitcom should prove to everyone that she is filled with B.S. It’s obvious that she knows exactly why she was recast. Who would want to work with this kind of human?

You’ve nailed Hubert, in my opinion. And as for the comparison between Wendy and Howard, that’s pretty brilliant, RV. I never would have made that connection, but you’re right.

I actually like Howard, because I know his shtick is shtick. I don’t listen to him, nor do I watch that reality show he’s lowering himself to do…but I like him when he’s on Letterman or when I see him speak in entertainment news stories. Maybe I should start to take Wendy in the same spirit…
Did someone force this “girl” to be on the show??? Wendy is a girl scout compared to her radio days!! run tell that
Exactly, Wendy has never denied what brought her success, gossiping. And her show is not the only one out there. She gives her opinion on her show. This Hubert lady needs to go get a life instead of writing open letters looking for her 15 minutes of fame. Apparently, she must be a Wendy watcher because this is the second open letter she has written to Wendy. The first being the one related to Wendy’s episode in which she reacted to Whitney Houston. If Ms. Hubert isn’t watching the Wendy show then she wouldn’t know what’s being said about her or anyone else. Go sit down! Aunt Viv

To be fair, while I’m sure nobody had to “force” her onto the show, Ali was there to promote her show on BET, so I imagine it was they who arranged this appearance.

Wow! Interesting comments from Alfonso Ribeiro! In spite of that, I did like Janet’s take on Vivian Banks waaay better than Daphne Reid’s. When Janet played her, Vivian was a great character who added much to the show and the overall family dynamic. No offense to Daphne but she wasn’t the Vivian that I came to know and love, a realistic and funny take no crap mother, sort of in the vein of Phylicia Rashad’s take on Claire Huxtable. Daphne Reid was like, just there. Compared to Janet’s portrayal, that was a letdown and I didn’t stick with the show much after that. I hear Alfonso and if that indeed was the story, then I can see why they let her go but they could’ve cast the replacement better and I have to consider Janet’s part of the story as to whether that was intentional on the producers and Will Smith’s part to have a weaken Vivian Banks.

david46208, thanks for Life After. That was quite eye-opening, too.

alstonboy, thanks for your clip of Alfonso, too! That was great to see. Even the first part about Warren Littlefield really hits home, because he was always a colossal screwup to me, and his decision to want to recast Carlton is just one example of that. Alfonso is clearly speaking HIS truth, but he is speaking the real truth, too. At least, I think so. (Great YouTube clip!!!)

Daphne Maxwell-Reid may not have gone over well with the Fresh Prince viewers (who generally don’t like change), but she has always been a sweetheart, as far as I’m concerned. I had an email exhange with her some years back about the struggles (unsuccessful, sadly) to get Frank’s Place on DVD, and I was not only blown away by how wonderful she was, but also by the fact that when I wrote to a website about FP, the response I got back was from one of the stars of that show! I can totally understand how the Fresh Prince set became a whole “Different World” after she joined the show.

This has been a fun trip down memory lane. :-)

Frank’s Place! I haven’t heard that show mentioned in years.

I agree with Hubert’s comments about black hair–Wendy’s comments about it not “belonging on the red carpet”, reveal that she– like many black people–has been truly ravaged by slavery. May be blacks do not ‘belong’ on the red carpet especially dark skin ones? Loved Huberts’s Aunt Viv; Daphne’s interpretation was weak. I saw Hubert on Gilmore Girls a few years back and she was good. Beautiful woman.

Yeah, like Jamie Foxx? Kerrie Washington? Denzel? Whoopi? Need I go on? Yeah, none of them would ever make it on the red carpet.

This was over the top. Wendy asking about Drake was what had Tatyana uncomfortable. That Aunt Viv thing is so old and Wendy wasn’t even being messy when she asked. She just asked like any talk show host would.

I don’t mind Wendy. She’s made some smart observations about “others” that I’ve witnessed.

I can see why a lot of people hate her, but that’s the biz.
