10 Actors Who Played Two Completely Unrelated Roles on The Same Soap Opera

News that Roger Howarth (ex-Todd), Michael Easton (ex-John) and Kristen Alderson (ex-Starr) are set to return to General Hospital as all-new characters is being met with mixed responses. As suds fans debate the latest chapter in the battle between GH and Prospect Park's One Life to Live, we decided to look back at a few actors who've played two unrelated roles on the same soap. Check 'em out below!

No. 10: Josh Taylor, Days of Our Lives

From 1977 to 1987, Josh Taylor played bartender-turned-lawyer Chris Kositchek on Days of Our Lives. Chris was a pal of 80's supercouple Roman Brady (Wayne Northrop) and Dr. Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall). In fact, he was so chummy with the Bradys, he was one of Roman's groomsmen when the cop married his Doc!

A decade after exiting the NBC soap for primetime, Taylor returned to DAYS, only this time he wasn't playing Chris. He was appearing as Chris' bud, Roman Brady!

Jamey, what an awesome list! Do you just rattle these off the top of your head or do you have to research them? Great work!

A mixture of both. I was able to rattle off eight, then started drawing blanks and had to do some hunting. Bummed I missed Robert Kelker Kelly as Bobby/Shane on AW. Would have replaced Kin Shriner on Y&R with him, but it isn't definitive, so LOL!

This whole idea is ridiculous. It's too soon for them to be coming back in different roles. It's only going to confuse the viewers. These actors are NOT all THAT to where they absolutely MUST be on our screens everyday. ABC can survive without them. This is to the detriment of GH and I predict yet ANOTHER decline in ratings. When are TPTB at these networks going to realize that we are not stupid?

That's awesome. The only ones that came to my mind were Claudia/Carly and Lance Pentiss/Eric Forrester, which doesn't really apply, considering he's a B&B character who happens to cross over to Y&R once every 10 years. LOL. And I only know about Lance Prentiss because my mom still calls Eric Forrester that.

Something about Josh Taylor's voice pisses me off. I don't know what it is but it just bothers the crap out of me. I have to mute him or change the channel. I like him as Roman though. Not as much as the original though.

I was waiting to see Robert Kelker-Kelly on the list, as Sam and Bobby/Shane on AW--glad you remembered him...um, them?

AW also had Lewis Arlt playing Kevin Thatcher, then coming back about five years later as Ken Jordan.

Someone else referenced the short turn Beverlee McKinsey took as Emma Ordway before she returned (within a few months) as Iris Cory Carrington, et. al. I also recall John Aprea playing Lucas and then Alexander Nikos, but I can't recall if anyone mentioned Nikos's resemblance to Lucas (I don't think they did).

A ruling from the judges may be required on this one from AW: When Jensen Buchanan's Marley got into that fire and had to have plastic surgery, a large part of the plotline involved the concept that the twins no longer looked alike. But no one addressed the fact that Marley now looked exactly as she looked eleven years before, thanks to being played by the same actress, Ellen Wheeler, who had played both twins back in the day. While all these other actors returned to play entirely new roles without others pointing out a resemblance, Wheeler returned to play the same character, but everyone was pointing out that she looked different.

When actors do this sort of thing, I think it's best when it happens YEARS apart. Of course, in today's current soap climate, we don't have that luxury, I understand.......

I believe it has to do with the strength of the actor. If they are good then they can create 2 different characters in a short amount of time.
One example for me that comes to mind is Bradley Cole on Guiding Light who played Prince Richard and then look alike Jeffrey O'Neil a few months later.

I know RH and ME can do this easily. I will give Alderson a chance to prove that she can create another character. Alderson might enjoy this chance to get to play someone she hasn't played since she was 3.

Also didn't Tylor Christopher play both Nickolas and a criminal on GH at the same time?
Anthony Geary should also be on the list playing both Luke and his lookalike cousin (can't remember his name).

TC played Nicholas Cassadine and Connor ?? at the same time. It was the story where Connor raped Emily.

Right, but those roles were not "unrelated". Connor being Nikolas' lookalike was central to the storyline.

One great omission is THE late GREAT Beverlee Mckensie played two different roles on Another World. Her first was the homely head of the Frame family Emma Ordway. Soon there after she created the major role of Iris Carrington and the rest is history.
Another one for Days is Rachel Melvin took over the role of Chelsea Brady, however she originally played the french girl Georgia, who Bo and Billie mistakenly thought was their daughter. The fact that Georgia and Chelsea looked alike was never mentioned to my knowledge.
On Another World, Mike Bauer came to town from GL's Springfield in the form of Gary Pilar (Carpenter) and courted Pat Matthews behind her husbands back. 10 years later Gary took on the thankless role of Alice's rebound hubby (after her only love Steve Frame died) Ray Gordon.

Ah, Bethany Joy Lenz's Michelle Bauer opposite Paul Anthony Stewart's Danny Santos-My first real soap "investment" couple. The girl oozed talent and went toe to toe with Saundra Santiago's Carmen Santos. Good times indeed... Innocent

Jamey, what about Lisa Hartman on "Knots Landing"? She played Ciji Dunne, was murdered, then brought back as Cathy Geary with a different hairstyle and hair color.

Grant Cramer played the Shawn the Lauren-crazed-stalker on Y&R and then played Adam a short-lived love interest for Ashley (to be fair he wore glasses for the former role). Also Kim Zimmer played a minor character on OLTL prior to playing Echo (according to her book).

For my money, it's the kind of thing that attracts me to the wackiness of soaps - it is not a genre that embraces naturalism. I looked high and low and found no older women with hats and foreign conspiring in my local park today.

dutchess, I disagree. I think both Micheal Easton and Roger Howarth have a huge following and a lot of people want to see them remain on GH. It's a soap opera, I can believe the unbelievable. I'd rather see these two guys back that I always liked, even in different roles, instead of GH bringing on new actors, like Sabrina, who I still can't get used to. When some of the stories get a bit over the top for me, I just tell myself it's a soap opera and I am just glad we still have 4 soaps on the air, when a year ago it seemed liked the end.

Well I have a recollection of an actress playing TWO completely unrelated roles on AW. The same actress played THREE completely unrelated roles on OLTL. Her name is Christine Jones. On Another World, she played Amy Gilford and then later Janice Frame. On One Life To Live, she first played the girlfriend of Tim Siegel (don't recall the character's name). Then she filled in for short time as Viki Riley. Then she came back again as Pamela Stuart, one of Asa's many wives. SHE WINS.

That's because he only has like three teeth in his head.

Lisa Hartman on Knots Landing played Ciji, who was murdered. Lisa Hartman returned the next season as Cathy Geary (notice the intentional pun in the character's initials to the first role CG/Ciji).

Another World was my favorite until Jill Faren Phelps destroyed it. I always felt bad for Ellen Wheeler because in the story, Marley's lines were always about how ugly she is now because of that fire. I never knew whether to laugh or cry. That fire also made her grow two feet. Even the heels Vicky wore didn't bridge the height gap. And don't even get me started on Bobby/Shane. Blech!

Am i mis-remembering Leigh McCloskey as one of Ashley's paramours or husbands on Y&R? Now he's the doc-of-all-trades on Y&R: MS specialist, and thoracic(?) surgeon.

On OLTL, Eileen Heckart played Allison Perkins' mother during the 1980s (Allison took baby Jessica to her mom's house after kidnapping her from Llanfair). Then in the 1990s, Eileen played the mother of Carlo Hesser and his twin brother, Mortimer Bern.

Another from OLTL: Before Pamela Payton-Wright created the role of Dorian's sister Addie Cramer in the early 90s, she and Dorian shared a jail cell when Pamela played a minor character named Charlotte during Dorian's stint in Statesville for murdering Mitch Laurence in 1986.

Christian LeBlanc played Kirk McColl on ATWT and then crossed over from Y&R as Michael Baldwin.

John Wesley Shipp showed up on OLTL (don't recall the character's name) long before showing up again as Eddie Ford.

Anthony Herrera was on ATWT as Mark Galloway and then James Stenbeck.

Ilene Kristen played Georgina Whitman and Roxie Balsom on OLTL.

I'm sure the list goes on so there is precedent but most of the appearances were spaced out. The only two times (in my opinion) when the same actor played 2 different roles on the same soap in a relatively short amount of time between the roles: Bethany Joie Lenz (Guiding Light) and Nathaniel Marston (OLTL - Al Holden then Michael McBain).

I am willing to give Frank and Ron a chance to see what they come up with for these actors.

It's amusing that we can all come up with numerous examples but I wonder what casual viewer who doesn't follow soap news will think (the three of them that exist)? Wouldn't it be odd to suddenly see Roger Howarth in a new role if you had no warning?

On Another World, John Considine played Vic Hastings in the seventies and the fantastically evil Reginald Love in the mid to late eighties.
