BREAKING NEWS: Michael Easton, Kristen Alderson AND Roger Howarth to Play NEW Characters on General Hospital!

Three familiar faces are heading back to General Hospital. However, they reportedly won't be playing the same characters they portrayed the last time you saw them! TV Guide Magazine's Michael Logan is reporting Michael Easton, Kristen Alderson and Roger Howarth will all be playing new characters when they return to General Hospital!

While Howarth was initially set to reprise the role of Todd Manning on GH—after briefly returning to One Life to Live for that sudser's relaunch—the brass at GH has reportedly opted to sever ties with Prospect Park, by creating an all-new role for him. Easton and Alderson, who didn't make deals to reprise John and Starr on the new OLTL, will also play new characters on GH

From the article:

"Prospect Park has been extremely difficult to deal with on this issue so GH basically said, 'Screw it! We'll create all new characters!'" notes one source privy to the situation. "It's the only way GH can get past the problem and get on with business."

ABC should have only signed them to one year deals to begin with. ABC mucked this up & like everything else is skirting the blame and uses PP because they know fans are skeptical due to the first try not working. Not buying aBC. Sit & spin my friend ughhh

I think Prospect Park is a winner in this whole mess. They are getting a lot of free publicity from the soap press and main stream media. People who never watched an episode of OLTL or GH might just tune in to see what all the uproar is all about.

Appleridge, I dont understand what you mean when you blame ABC only. I do repeat I am not totally trusing them but how can pp be so flawless. What am I missing?

My point is that ABC went to PP and asked to borrow the characters. They knew PP had a year to get this going & if they did the characters would have to be written out of GH. The actors knew that too.

So why did ABC sign these actors to THREE year deals. They were putting the cart before the horse.

Now that PP has the shows ready to go, ABC doesnt want to compromise. They blocked talks between PP & ME/KA. RH got his deal cause he only inked one year with ABC and it was due to expire. ABC wanted to keep RH so they didnt block his PP talks. PP & RH came to an agreement where he films 4 weeks only.

Given How OLTL films that could mean RH may appear in up to 4o episodes and 10 weeks of OLTL

ABC couldnt learn to share thru mid july on screen and that would be it. IMHO I feel thats the kind of deal PP wanted with KA & ME but now we will never know.

This is all on ABC

Before fingers are pointed at Prospect Park in blame let's remember that over the past decade ABC systematically destroyed their daypart....PORT CHARLES, ALL MY CHILDREN, ONE LIFE TO LIVE ane even GH. They recycled bad writers, employed the same EPs that drove other shows into the ground and allowed network execs to manage our soaps who had only passion for their paychecks and not the genre.

Kudos to Prospect Park for fighting the fight to reinvent and reboot the genre. If ABC had managed the shows properly in the first place we wouldn't even be having this discussion about Prospect Park right now. All of them would still be on the air! ABC is the Helena/Faison/Frank Smith role in this drama. Not Prospcect Park. They are the good guys.

Just for shits and grins, some of the actors that play the characters mentioned in your post should try out for the roles of Todd, John and Starr. Wink

^^LMAO! liason4real, I know you were an OLTL fan, I can't remember what you thought of Todd, John and Starr being in Port Charles?

Also, I don't think OLTL will lose out too much with the exception of Todd Manning. Since Roger Howarth will be doing a brief stint of OLTL when it goes online perhaps he will wrap things up with the character. I'd prefer to have Trevor St. John back as Victor Jr.

Starr and John could be written out altogether or the roles recasted for the reboot.

I'm sure both ABC and PP will be just fine and roll with the punches.

I did not mind the OLTL characters at first, but Starr has gotten on my nerves the last few months, Todd is basically David Vickers in disguise, and John has his funny moments at times.

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Their characters just left. How can we look at them as anyone except the OLTL characters especially when they spent so much time ramming their history down our throats. What's so fantastic about these three that we have to have them worked back into our storylines again? And which GH characters will we lose because of it?

From various reports Roger signed a long-term contract with ABC, he went to the re-boot on his own accord. Maybe ABC was hoping it would be an olive branch to PP

And from what all reports have said even from the horse mouth Michael Easton never wanted to do the re-boot so why blame ABC.

There are three sides to this story and as long as I keep ME, RH & KA (no matter what they call them) I am happy

So hold up according to EW John/Michael and Star/Kristen wont even film one single episode at OLTL?

EW really makes it sound like ABC wouldn't budge....as usual the soap behind the soap is much more interesting than the actual soap.

So where did it say that Roger only signed for 1-year and where did it say that ABC barred KA & ME from talking to PP

So we are going to be seeing scoundrel media mogul Rod Banning and his plucky daughter Shar plus brooding lawman Jack McShane all showing up in PC pretty soon?
Will all flashbacks have the characters names retroactively altered to the new character names?
Will there be mentions of Shar's dead baby daddy Joel and daughter Faith? Or Rod's ex-wives Claire and Rea?

They should all just save themselves time and money and get rid of the characters and actors all together. If they are going to make new characters then hire fresh faces. I was really hoping those three would be gone forever especially McBain. At the very least, if they "reinvent" him, cut his damn hair.

If RC/FV had to have these 3 actors from OLTL I don't understand why they didn't initially introduce them as new characters instead of bringing over Todd, John, and Starr. It would've been so easy to bring over Caleb and then just introduce Todd and Starr as new characters. It never made sense they would all just up and leave Llanview anyway since they had so many roots there.

When BB hired Don Diamont they made him a new character a few months after leaving YR so it can be done very successfully. Now it's just going to be strange to see KA, ME and RH in new roles not to mention all the wasted time to re-introduce them yet again.

If Todd, Starr & John were so valuable to ABC in the first place then why didn't they keep OLTL? They could have kept them right where they belonged on OLTL on ABC. By canceling the show they basically acknowledged the show and its characters weren't of value to the them. How many stories did we read about ABC wanting out of the soap business? Even on this website. Now we are supposed to rally around ABC and act like they are the victim?

Reading the article from ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY it sounds like Prospect Park was being more than reasonable. They wanted Starr to cross over for a week and John for 4 weeks. Not sure why they wouldn't be willing to work with that schedule. Seems its the least they could do for the show that established them.

This assertion is 100% contrary to every single bit of reporting on this issue, both published and behind the scenes. Until today, that is....

They blocked talks between PP & ME/KA. RH got his deal cause he only inked one year with ABC and it was due to expire. ABC wanted to keep RH so they didnt block his PP talks.

And we know this how? The EW story does not corroborate any of these specific assertions made. There is this paragraph from the EW story, though:

Prospect tried to work out a deal to share the characters, to no avail. According to one high-level executive familiar with the negotiations, Prospect only needed Alderson to work one week on OLTL and then she could return to GH. It wanted Easton for up to four weeks before he would be free to return to Port Charles, as well....As it stands, Prospect can’t even use the original websites for OLTL and AMC because ABC hasn’t released them. (Anyone who tries to access them is immediately sent to ABC’s daytime hub).

From every single source I've read and given the high amount of chatter on this, PP has played (extremely hard) hardball from the very start of these negotiations. If ABC is doing anything, its pushback which doesn't necessarily mean it's their "fault" here. I don't dispute the EW piece, but it does read like "Prospect Park's Side of the Story," doesn't it? (That $8.5 million figure is rather specific, isn't it?....)

ABC couldnt learn to share thru mid july on screen and that would be it. IMHO I feel thats the kind of deal PP wanted with KA & ME but now we will never know.

So...this is how you feel....and we'll never know....but it is stated definitely this is all ABC's "fault"?? Really??

Ravennite wrote

Agreed. PP has the rights to the character of John McBain. ABC has the contract with Michael Easton. Since Easton wasn't interested and if PP recasts the role, it is what the situation is. Howarth has returned to OLTL and is shooting and will be back on GH in a new role. That leaves Alderson, who also didn't want to return. Since Alderson and Easton didn't want to be a part of the online reboot, how is it ABC"s "fault"? Wouldn't Prospect Park still be in the same position of having to recast?

OLTL (and AMC) costs about $35-$45 million per year to produce. Arguing that ABC should have kept a show it did not feel had long term financial value for the network for the sake of three characters just to prove a point here....makes no sense.

By canceling the show they basically acknowledged the show and its characters weren't of value to the them.

Given that licensing deals of cancelled properties is very common and given that ABC is going to make $8.5 million plus profits a year off these shows by letting another company do the heavy lifting on its own platforms as opposed to spending $70-$90 million a year producing these shows means there is some value to be had by giving them the ax after all.

How many stories did we read about ABC wanting out of the soap business? Even on this website.

Of course. They did. That was then. Like NBC and CBS, they have shed multiple shows they felt were weighing down their dayparts. Despite everything, NBC chugs along with its one soap, CBS with its two soaps (that happen to be international hits through syndication) and ABC now has one as well. They have all had mixed success, but they are where they are where they want to be in terms of the soap game. As far as ABC is concerned, GH is up creatively, in terms of ratings, production and (from all accounts) fiscally sound; it enjoys the support of the network NOW as the show marches toward its 50th anniversary.

In other words, things change.

Now we are supposed to rally around ABC and act like they are the victim?

No, not victim. But solely blaming ABC or Prospect Park for a situation in which they are both participants with plenty of lawyers handling complex negotiations isn't exactly kosher, either.

OLTL was in pretty good shape and ABC/Disney had no problem kicking them to the curb.

If memory serves, OLTL's ratings went up after they got the boot and Valentini/Carlivati started pulling out all the stops to bring the show to a close, which attracted more viewers. It was one of the bigger ironies of the cancellation. Even more ironic: AMC was the marquee show for the network due to La Lucci/Erica Kane and the network high hopes for Cameron Mathison (although its lowest rated), while OLTL was for years and up to cancellation considered its also-ran redheaded stepchild....
