HomeTVThe Young and The RestlessKyle Refuses Summer’s Cotton Candy on The Young and the Restless Luke Kerr April 10, 2013 The Young and The Restless, TV Recap 64 Comments Summer (Hunter King) tried yet again to seduce Kyle (Blake Hood), but he wasn’t interested in any her cotton candy. He told her to get dressed, and leave his room. Later, Kyle told Summer business associates shouldn’t be hooking up. However, she pushed back by saying they weren’t in the same department. He informed Summer he was into someone else. When she asked who it was, he refused to tell her. Adam (Michael Muhney) and Victor (Eric Braeden) did a bit of father/son bonding after Adam woke up. They talked about whether or not it would be possible for them to team up. They agreed if they did, they would be a force to be reckoned with. Congressman Wheeler (Mark Pinter) turned himself in to Detective Chavez, (Ignacio Serricchio) because he insisted the charges wouldn’t stick. Chavez promptly arrested him. Later, Victor showed up to gloat. Victoria (Amelia Heinle) shared with her mother Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) that she and Billy (Billy Miller) were trying to have a baby. Nick (Joshua Morrow) proposed to Avery (Jessica Collins), but once again she seemed more than a little squeamish about committing to him. Dylan (Steve Burton) and Chelsea (Melissa Claire Egan) shared some more coffee. The two talked about her relationship with Adam. I am going to miss Emme Rylan as Abby, but I can live with it since she’ll be on General Hospital as Lulu Spencer. 64 Responses pjc722 April 10, 2013 I’m sorry, but I am going to say that the past week has been a utter disappointment. SUre the acting has been great. I don’t think there is a better crop of actors on daytime than the ones on Y&R. BUt the stories have either been dull with no delivery or utter slutty garbage. The only great part has been the dissolution of Lauren and Michael’s marriage and the hunk of chunky italian meat in Carmine. The Wheeler killed Belinda story is like a glass of flat coca cola that you hope is fizzy but are only disapointed when pouring it to discover that there’s no foam, just sugary dark BLAH! WIth little more than DNA on Belinda’s body, everyone and their uncle believes a US senator is guilty of murder so the man convicted of her murder, her husband who verbally abused her, was a known alcoholic and ran in the wrong crowds walks free. Then to add more flatness to my soda, they have everyone confront Wheeler in the police station where this senator has been dumb enough not to arrive with his lawyer?! And now, Paul WIlliams is a “bad/good cop”!?!!! I ain’t buying any of it. THen you have Chelsea once again ALMOST tell Adam he is a daddy to only chicken out YET AGAIN. Dylan has been around long enough to have sex with more than a 4 month pregnant wuss of a woman. And when the heck is Chelsea going to show, any way?!! She is 4 and a half months pregnant already and that tight outfit the other day does nothing but show that this may be the longest pregnancy in daytime! As for Nikki and her idol threats towards Adam! I giggled. Honestly, that was like me trying to use a soap line in real life in an argument. I say it only to realize I watch too much soap operas! Nikki needs to be the one saying to Victor don’t double cross Adam because he will come after us if you dump him again. NOT ADAM! For cryin’ out loud, the guy took a bullet for your abusive husband and she still finds fault with him!!! I am tired of Victoria either wanting Newman or wanting a child! Get her a job and just let there be a miracle pregnancy!! ANd Chloe and Kevin?! RObin Hoods?! Seriously these actors need to dust off their resumes because i cant see them getting off and Jill Farrren Phelps is sleaning house yet again! AGAIN, I love Y&R and the actors. i am just bored with the way the story is being NOT told. Log in to Reply pjc722 April 10, 2013 I forgot about Summer. JUST give this kid a teen story because I am not ready to watch her slut it up to gain a man so soon after watching her bully a boy to the verge of successful suicide! WHo doesn’t see a pregnancy occuring with her?! I see her pregnant by the end of the summer if not sooner!!! Log in to Reply logan_echolls April 10, 2013 I so agree with you regarding Nikki threatening Adam. That was laughable. I like the scenes when they went at Wheeler but for a Senator to go in there without a lawyer was stupid and made no sense. He is a Senator. It would be all in the news. I actually like the Summer storyline. I like vixen storylines like that. I don’t like it when the girl goes crazy so I hope Summer doesn’t go crazy. Dylan is so boring. I FF him and Chelesa. Sick of her not telling Adam. It’s getting boring. About as boring as Dylan. I wish the Victoria I grew up watching with my grandmother in the 90’s was back. This girl’s eggs must be beating the crap out her uterus trying to get out. Loved the Victor/Adam scenes. No matter what anyone says about the actors, those two are professionals. All the back and forth between them and from that scene and their chemistry, you would never guess they were ever at odds in real life. Log in to Reply TraceyAbbot101 April 10, 2013 I was going to say, it was about time Nikki approached and spoke with Adam. Apparently, she needs to set another place setting at the dinner table. Do not like the current end to the Congressman Wheeler plot….. very weak to an other wise great show. Loved the 1st birthday for Johnny with just “his family” and they included what seems to be an older Dehlia…. meanwhile Kevin and Chloe case the joint…. I figure we are going to have a crime spree at the better storage units in Genoa City. I do love the update to Villy’s home…. nice and modern. Chelsea fearful of Victoria? LOL what a joke that plot is!! Log in to Reply TraceyAbbot101 April 10, 2013 Jill and Kay duking it out….. yea!!! Lily and ole what’s his name….. little heads are exploding all over the world as a result of this perfect couple at odds with each other. I foresee Lily throwing herself at Tyler just to get back at Cain!! Log in to Reply stoney07 April 10, 2013 That’s the same Delia that was sick a couple of years ago. I guess she just got older….but it’s the same little girl. Hopefully they won’t age her too quickly. The Wheeler story was good…but the end of it…idk. I’m hoping things will end on a higher note. BEcause right now, it’s just kind of ho-hum…no real action at all. Josh Griffith is a fantastic writer, but I’m noticing he’s REAAAAAALLLLLY more conservative with his style…as far as action is concerned. The show is waaaaay less action-packed, more emotionally driven…but I DO like a little action here and there, especially in THAT type of storyline. But I’m not complaining…just sayin’… I’m loving the show as a whole right now. Log in to Reply The_Moustache April 10, 2013 Kyle (blake hood) looks delish in that pic. sure am gonna miss him when he’s gone. Log in to Reply noway April 10, 2013 Pjc Summer’s BFF Courtney aka Kelli Goss from none other than Hollywood Heights starts today. You know another house cleaning has to be coming they are bringing on at least two more newbies in addition to the hh BFF. However at this rate who is going to miss the stealing chipmunks if they leave? Log in to Reply pjc722 April 10, 2013 I am sorry, but I know they are doing it slowly and it’s slightly under the radar but Jill has done this before on other soaps by getting rid of the over 50s crowd and keeping ONLY TRULY “VITAL” older characters. With the new addition of Courtney (Kelli Gross), Melissa Ordway coming on as the new Abby (they should have fought hard for Emme Rylan) along with the actors portraying Summer and Noah, the show has added a lot of HOLLYWOOD HEIGHTS actors and really YOUNGED down the cast. Where’s Gloria and Jeffrey? Where’s Jill other than walking on for a few scenes? Kay is having a Health crisis at the same time as Nikki is having hers when the two should be either’s support right now. And Jill is just a WALK ON annoyance to Kay with Cane as her confidante. I just don’t get it. ANd I agree with Stoney… Josh is very conservative in his story telling and I think that’s his flaw, and a major one at that. I watch for big payoffs but have gotten none since they came on. Jack takes over Newman AND finally gets one over on Victor only to unceremoniously give it up and enter rehab. He goes to his cabin for it with Phyllis and returns wanting to start a fashion company. WOW…. great suspense. Wheeler kills Belinda. WOW… who is Belinda? Adam gets shot and is in a coma but Chelsea finally reveals she is pregnant only to a comatose Adam and then ONCE again keeps the secret. WOW… not drama. Victoria is trying for a baby again. WOW… AGAIN. All I am saying is that there should be meat on this bone and not just marrow. It seems that sometimes when I watch the show and want that BIG Friday cliffhanger I spend the weekend SUCKING all the marrow out just to feel I was given something when I wasn’t. SURE, Y&R is better written in the dialogue sense but the stories are falling short. The pay-offs are so subtle that I am just glad the story has come to an end. I still don’t think that Wheeler did the murder and that we will see that Gus was the true culprit because he hated that Wheeler bedded his wife or that his wife cheated on him. The scene at the end of the episode snitched it for me that there is something bigger coming along. (Again, I am just thinking and hoping in my mind that there is because I know the actor playing Gus is short-term and Mark Pinter is gone in a week or so from our screens) Log in to Reply harlee490 April 10, 2013 I have enjoyed how Adam has one on one scenes with ppl connected around him, and I loved Nikki & Adam today. Victor\Adam topnotch showcasing talents of both actors. I love Summer and her scheming ways to get Kyle’s attention. Kyle even made it clear, Summer is Phyllis’s daughter and not going to stop her. I can’t wait for Phyllis realizing her daughter is reaching or discovering her sexuality. This will be priceless to watch. I did like how Wheeler had to answer questions from Belinda’s family. Gus saying justice will be delivered…I hope this isn’t over quite over. I hope this isn’t how they wrap it up. I hope Josh & his writers can give us a good one\two punch, his team doing such a good job but needs to tighten it up for the delivery. I love all emotional aspects this writing team has brought back to Y&R but as Stoney mentioned it needs more pep on certain stories where needed. Log in to Reply ChrisGa April 10, 2013 I continue to enjoy the show with the glaring exception being the Kevin/Chloe mess. I gotta say that at this point I’m kinda at a loss with these two; the writers seem to be literally throwing anything and everything against the idea wall with these two, attempting to make something stick. Here’s a short story about that–IT’S NOT GONNA HAPPEN. Cut your losses and either break them up so they can each find someone else–and in Kevin’s case, a man–or just write them the hell off. Ugh. Also gotta say I’m so going to miss both Marcy(Emme)Rylan and Blake Hood. While I wouldn’t say losing BH is on the level of letting ER jump ship I still find that recasting completely unnecessary; BH is a good actor(and judging from the last few episodes they really failed to take advantage of his physical attributes–guy’s hot). It’ll be interesting to see how the two newbies shake out. Endless posts with basically the same opinion. I don’t get it. Why watch three and a half hour of soap on a day, only to complain in a dozen comments on DC afterwards!? I enjoyed much of the Wheeler storyline, but the end just wasn’t that good. Anyway, Wheeler made for a great villain and I’m kind of sad to see him go. The Victor/Adam scenes were just great. And even though I couldn’t take Nikki threatening Adam seriously, I got the message behind it. And I think so did Adam. I can’t wait how this is all developing. Josh Griffith so far does an amazing job writing this father/son-relationship. So Jill does get a little bit of airtime and people start questioning where Jeffrey and Gloria are??? Seriously!? Not to mention that these characters are all only on recurring basis, but this writing team also wants to write for the main characters. That’s why they are featured so much. That’s why we aren’t in storyline nirvana anymore. Because not every single recurring role needs a storyline for itself anymore. Finally!! Abby and Kyle really have great chemistry together as cousins/friends. I hope we’ll see this also with other actors playing the roles. Chloe/Kevin are a weak link. Don’t like the story and I just don’t find these characters watchable anymore. Log in to Reply yojoromo4469 April 10, 2013 I am personally disappointed in the way my soap is going. I say, “my soap” as it is only one the wife and I watch. Chloe and Kevin’s storyline, has gone way beyond, just plain dumb. We will miss, bot Abby and Kyle. Adriana should have been gone, at least 3 months ago. The senator would never have shown up without an attorney, and never been left in a room with all that group. He is, by far the best actor of the bunch and they plan on getting rid of him, so sad. Billy and Vicki need another kid, like I need another hole in my head. Dylan is dumber and drier than dirt. I could go on and on, but don’t wish to bore too many in one day. Log in to Reply alstonboy4315 April 10, 2013 Summer is a chip off the block, just like her fast-in-the-ass mammy, Syphallus! Log in to Reply harlee490 April 10, 2013 Yes Kevin\Chloe is certainly the weak link of all the stories. Honestly we don’t need Jeffery in any shape or form…as for Gloria yes I like her character but she had a lot of story with MAB’s team and not that important to me right now but Jill absolutely…I loved Tuesday with K\J…this is going to backfire on Katherine and watch if Jill doesn’t find out herself. I love how the Abbotts are as Kyle\Abby are good buds and friends. I have always liked (surprisely haven’t changed) how family Abbotts are so close knit as a unit…this is the difference bwt Newmans & Abbotts. When all said is done Abbotts are a clan comes together as family..if Summer is an Abbott this would be great because of family unit. Log in to Reply hey mon April 10, 2013 I hear ya. Noah has gotten back-burnered, and now can’t even get on-screen because of Dylan, it seems. Now this Courtney-person is going to show up, another chick from Hollywood Heights, as Summer’s mysterious ‘friend’. And of course, nuKyle is going to be from Hollywood Heights, too. Guess I’m gonna have to go and rent out some Hollywood Heights to see who’s next. But I would say that I feel like a dirty ol guy, cause I wold like to hop in bed with Summer, pronto. And I can see what Summer sees in Kyle. Blake Hood has been working on those pecs, and that is a fact. He has been working on them mighty hard. In fact, I think JFP is making a grande’ mistake. Put a small mustache on Kyle, and not only Summer will stripping for him on sight (on on site), but every other girl in town. Take care Mr Hood. Maybe you can show up in Salem as someone who busts up Sonny and Will. Nothing against Jessica Collins, but I just have been over this character for a long time now…….. I do like Dylan and Chelsea. They are cute together and I think that Steve Burton does his best work alongside fiery bad girl-type of characters. I also enjoyed the Adam/Victor scenes……..and I want them to grow closer, but not TOOOOOOO close. Their dynamic reminds me a lot of the Katherine/Jill dynamic and I don’t want to see them totally lose all that magical resentment and cattiness that they have toward each other. I will miss both Blake Hood and Marcy Emme Lizzie Spaulding Rylan…….(whatever her name is this week…….. )but I will wait until I find out if these two new babies can act before rushing to judgment. Log in to Reply pferrando April 10, 2013 I’m going to miss Blake. I liked his take on Kyle, and he’s such a hot guy…more masculine looking than the yettoairKyle. Monday’s show was good, but then almost everything yesterday fell flat for me. They’ve really got to address the Kevin and Chloe mess. Really? Take stuff from Billy and Victoria? Stop it. The Wheeler scenes were also not very impactful for me, and I was liking the story. Even Kay and Jill’s scenes didn’t really have the drama they should. And lastly, I don’t get what they are doing with this Adriana character…Noah’s been reduced to little if anything these days. So Monday’s episode…a big thumbs up, and yesterday was just a sideways thumb… So I know I like the stories, which are coming from Josh, but do we think we need better breakdown or dialogue writers? Something was off yesterday! Log in to Reply Restless Fan April 10, 2013 I see both sides of this issue. I think the dialogue on Y&R has evolved beautifully but I find some of Josh Griffiths stories boring. His big moments are more like thuds. He needs a co-headwriter who can deliver what he apparently is unable too. I feel most of his stories are too rushed and seem to resolve themselves with little fanfare (Jacks addiciton, the cyber bully story, The Congressmen Wheeler saga). My initial excitement about the new team has waned a great deal. Also what happened to the edgier, more interesting versions of some of our favs? Phyllis, Victor, Adam, Jack all seemed to have moved in the opposite, more copacetic direction. I do feel the show as a whole needed to be grounded after that hack Maria left but not at the sake of diluting the rivalries we loved. I don’t like that Phyllis is not more involved in Nick/Averys relationship. True Phyllis would be obsessing and ringing her hair out over it. Frankly the story needs an antagonist like Phyllis. The trio of Nick/Avery/Dylan is boring as all hell. Dylan is a lackluster character with no real edge. In real life someone like Dylan might be a great guy to know but a character like this doesn’t necessarily translate to good tv. Ditto Adrianna who is not catching fire. As far as the Congressmen Wheeler story goes it turned out to be another story victory for Victor (boring). While I like the addition of Tony Todd as Gus I don’t care about any of it. We were just introduced to the guy a few weeks back. I’m not emotionally invested enough in his plight to take great joy in his victory. So the “big” moment this week was more like a bit thud. Tyler attacking the Congressmen had me yawning as this whole saga is a story about explaining unseen past events to the audience and expecting a big reaction. Didn’t happen for me. The cyber bully story had the same problem. All the bullying happened off camera. Remember how JT and Brittney used to go after Billy and Mac? Or how Kevin terrorized Colleen? THOSE were far superior stories of teenagers being bullied by their peers than what Fen and Summer did to Jamie. I appreciate the efforts of the new team and I like most of their ideas but the writers REALLY need to work on executing more suspense and big soapy moments. I wouldn’t say right now JG as a head writer is close to the caliber of Kay Alden or Jack Smith but the potential is there. I see it in stories like the Carmine/Lauren/Michael triangle (by far the most compelling story currently being told) and the promising Summer/Kyle love story. Even Kay’s story has had it’s moments albeit glaring omissions of Esther/Murphy/Jill/Brock in the saga. Time will tell if this re-boot of Y&R is a worthy counterpart to the house Bill Bell built. So far it’s not…but the the potential is there. Log in to Reply pferrando April 10, 2013 Very well put Restless… And I’m noticing other misses too. The shots cut too soon sometimes, we are missing impactful closeups, back ground score is not used effectively. But what I notice is that it varies from day to day, which I blame Jill for. (Sorry Jill fans…) Those things were never missed back in the day…it was very consistent. There may have been days when we didn’t have nail biting drama, but the writing was ALWAYS delivered and wrapped up in the signature Y and R way. I notice multiple directors too…maybe we just have too many hands involved? Log in to Reply Blue Skies and Palomino Ponies April 10, 2013 Loved the Victor/Adam scenes. Completely agree, Logan, and often think the same thing when I see these two on screen together. They bring out the best in each other. Since they’ve been invoked three times already, I won’t worry about doing this myself — please stop mentioning Gloria & Jeffrey: I fear the Beetlejuice Effect! Although it would make some sense for Gloria to be worrying around after the Lauren & Michael thing…more sense than her sudden participation in a trifecta of budding clothing designers. Must admit, as someone not at all sure what to think of Steve Burton, I am in the camp that found him and Chelsea adorable at Crimson Lights the other day. Loved the return of the real Delia! Kevin & Chloe…I’m bored, but I’m having a really hard time buying that they’d steal from Katherine & now from Victoria. I hate every second of this, and yes, I freely admit that I STILL can’t get over that she chose Kevin over RONAN. Putting that aside, though, I appreciate that they’re trying to do the relevant “tough economy” storyline, but I’m not sure that the horrible “Robin Hood” takeoff provides any helpful social message or dramatic story resolution. The moment Adam jumps in front of the bullet could have been dramatized a million times more by the music….slow motion, facial reactions. But everything was quick and dry. I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t really Y&R style action. I don’t want Josh Griffith to go. I think he’s the best thing for Y&R, but maybe he needs a good co-writer that will pack a bigger punch. Not TOO big of a punch…because I don’t want dopplegangers, murder mysteries, etc… Who am I kidding? Y&R has always moved this slow. I’ll just shut my mouth and wait… Log in to Reply Restless Fan April 10, 2013 pferrando as you know the music has been huge for me. I don’t think the new music drives story anymore like it used to. They also use less of it which adds to the dreariness of it at times. They should have kept the music team that Bill Bell hired and just had them compose new material. Instead they got rid of them and hired guys who worked on the ABC soaps and that is exactly how Y&R sounds now…like an ABC soap. No dis-respect to the ABC shows but why would you emulate a formula that failed? Those elements that made Y&R stand out have been taken away. Unfortunate for sure. As far as the directing goes I like a few things I’ve seen like the camera pulling back at the end of a scene. There have even been some new ways of shooting these sets I hadn’t seen before. I appreciate that. However, I miss the close ups! Even the best prime time shows still stick the camera in the actors faces. Y&R was known for the close-ups, the music, the sweeping camera moves, the attention to detail. It had a quality that was unmatched. Not anymore. It’s that style that was maintained until LML (and subsequently MAB) came on board that I was hoping the show would bring back and improve on. Last week I listened to an interview Tristan Rogers did and he spoke frankly about a lot of things regarding daytime (I love when people in the thick of it validate what the fans are seeing so clearly). One of the things he addressed was how new regimes come into a show and try to change it instead of honoring it. As a producer, Jill has made changes to Y&R that have modified the core of it. Updating Y&R shouldn’t have changed the flavor of it. Y&R doesn’t always look or sound like a Bill Bell show anymore. The camera moves are not sweeping and grand. They are all static wide shots. The music is no longer a character in the narrative. 6 months into it I can’t tell you what most of the new music sounds like. A lot of Jill’s changes have not enhanced on what worked when the show was a force to be reckoned with. I will give her credit for better costumes, hair and makeup. Even the actors no longer look like they are sleepwalking through their scenes as they did when Maria was in charge. However, not having a prior history with the show is rearing its head. I don’t always see the actors conveying those deeply rooted feelings they have for one another. Jack/Victor, Sharon/Nikki, Sharon/Phyllis, Adam/with anyone, are giving watered down responses to their classic feuds. Y&R feels too much like a new show. I get why Jill is controversial. I don’t think she’s an untalented producer but I do think she has a specific style and right now that style is changing the flavor of Y&R. Great I guess if you’re a newer fan who wasn’t around for the healthier glory days like I was. Perhaps it’s the legacy of that horrid Maria Bell. She so let the show flounder in so many areas she made it easy for the network and Sony to come in and throw a lot of things out. I’m sure Jill has 100% permission to do what she’s doing. I realize if the ratings continue to grow (and I really hope they do) then I either get used to new Y&R or I bid adieu. Only time will tell. Rather see rough-and-tumble story-telling with crying the courtroom, that just the after-math. Let me see Gus in the courtroom, not Leslie and Neil talking about it later. Let’s hear it for Jill and Billy having a heart-to-heart during and after Delia’s custody hearing in Sept 2011! Great, forgotten scenes of yester-year. A tribute to Hogan and MAB! I have a feeling things are taking a turn for the worse on Y&R, as nuAbby and nuKyloe enter Stage Right, and their up-and-coming friend Courtney! Ratings are already sliding into the 3.2s and 3.1s. Log in to Reply Restless Fan April 10, 2013 hey mon. Not a lot of MAB supporters for sure but I have to say things took a turn for the worse not long into MAB’s reign. She is hardly the savior of Y&R. Her stories were awful and compromised years and even decades of continuity while assassinating characters in the process. There were bright moments for sure but I credit the dialogue writers more than the HW’s whose long term vision at the time was shotty at best. As for the ratings I know of one week recently where Y&R hit some lows but that was due to pre-emptions (New Pope) and schedule adjustments in the east coast for NCAA coverage. No one was surprised at the hits the ratings took that week. Jill and Josh’s Y&R has been on an upswing ratings wise posting +600,000 viewers more from a year ago the last 2 weeks. Josh G needs work on his delivery for sure but I don’t envy the holy hot mess he inherited. I just hope he can channel his soapy delicious side and sprinkle that goodness onto his stories. Not everything needs to be played so safe. Crack that whip Josh! Log in to Reply hey mon April 10, 2013 Restless Fan — It simply seems boring to me. I need a psycho-of-the-month, a body-double, The Town Drunk (best Nikki ever!). Then there was Cane gas-lighting Lily! Abby running over Tucker! Ashley walking into the Police Station and bi+ch-slapping Abby across the face! Baby! What do we have now? Neil: “How was Gus’s trial?” The Trial that the viewers have waited 3 months for. Leslie: “It was good, my Dad is exonerated.” That’s it? I guess so. Fen is gone, Marcus is gone. I need a d@mn villain immediately! In fact, I have already started drinking today, and am typing at the Bar, and I want to go drinking in Genoa City with Nikki the Town Drunk! That would be fun! It amazes me that I come on here and I praise LAUREN AND MICHAEL’S marriage crumbling and how hot it is to have Lauren with Carmine. Its so obvious that the good congressman was set up by his darling daughter or his yet unseen wife. We shall see I guess. Log in to Reply pjc722 April 11, 2013 Or by gus. She wasn’t the worst thing for the show, and she was able to have some memorable moments for me. I still say she rescued the show after LML took over. Just not the best storyteller. The only time in the history of me watching Y and R that I FF’d through a lot of the show was under LML. I at least watched MAB through good and bad. I think the show’s stories are much easier to watch now. As I’ve stated before (many times, sorry) my issues are with how the show looks and feels at times. (Tuesday’s episode was a recent example.) There are so many of us that want the show to be “perfect” again. I hope I typed this quietly for hey mon. A bloody mary could fix that problem… Log in to Reply harlee490 April 11, 2013 Bitch Bitch Bitch Log in to Reply hey mon April 11, 2013 pferrando — I will take that ‘Bloody Mary’, since it involves a ‘splash’ of vodka. LML was terrible. She couldn’t right for Ashley Abbott. She wanted to kill off John Abbott. Big plusses were that LML always wanted Nikki to be smart and a successful businesswoman. But overall she was bad. Got to go, got to ‘hit’ the gym. Log in to Reply pjc722 April 12, 2013 Seriously, HEY MON, you are now defending HARLEE?! Should I not take offense to her latest comment? Log in to Reply alstonboy4315 April 12, 2013 I don’t believe in headwriters having or needing co-writers. If they are paying Josh Griffith 35K a week, he needs to be able to deliver on his own. Agnes Nixon and Bill Bell were able to write shows on their own, and these new writers need to develop the same ability!! I give him a solid B-. The show still needs more pizazz and humor. And less Avery Clark. And NO more pointlessly annoying wenches like Adrianna. Log in to Reply harlee490 April 12, 2013 david46208 …   Log in to Reply Camp is not a sustainable model April 12, 2013 @stoney07 & everyone: What Josh is doing is about as close to Bill Bell as you can get. Bill Bell never relied on action and told stories in a very slow fashion. Maybe too slow for some people’s taste. But that was what he did. The facts that despite your gripes Y&R is up 700,000 viewers over this time the last year so he is doing something right. Too many soap fans here were not around or raised on the traditional writing that brought Y&R to Number #1 and once made AMC such a success. Bill Bell was always telling a psychologically emotionally driven storylines that climaxed with secrets revealed and fallout’s that lasted for months. You have to imagine while other soaps were having women levitate out of bed, become Amish, see Eterina and have villains blow up in boats only to return later. Bill Bell was not writing that mess. The emotional entanglements of his characters were what brought the show to #1 in the late 80’s and kept it there under his run. Any writer who could get that sense of storytelling would be the successful one. Yes Bill Bell had a tale every now and then that defied his tone, but even then there was a methodical engaging way he could draw a villain into a real psychological break that was not your garden variety. Why do you think that even here when they did the top five moments podcast and even from long term fan response that Olivia learning that Nathan had cheated on her with Keesha was such a favorite? Because it brought about that theater element that was popular in the 70’s on soaps before General Hospital had soaps looking like they were in the land of OZ. And ultimately tradition won out over the absurd in the ratings. Y&R has been #1 for how long? And the most loyal fan base for how long? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHh4UK-JG_E So what Josh is doing is working his way toward bringing in that style of soap opera. He’s doing a very good job at that. Also if on GH Duke can pull off a mask Passions style and be Ceaser Fasion then whether or not there was a lawyer present with Congressman Wheeler is not important. Because if we are going to rate the believability of stories then GH and Days gets an F-, B&B C- and Y&R a B-. And thankfully Josh is not relying on a million and one returns and over-the-top plots to try and sustain the show. He doesn’t need too. Because the Y&R fanbase is the Waldorf Astoria base not the Holiday Inn, Best Western and Motel 6 of others. Cause I like my wine “fine.” Not the 2 buck chuck! I want high quality imported beer! Not colt 45, Old English and King Corba from the corner store. I want a Cuban cigar. Not Newport’s! Log in to Reply Camp is not a sustainable model April 12, 2013 @pferrando: Josh rescused the show. Those were his storylines that saved it for the first 6 months. Then after he was fired the show went to crap. So it because of Josh that Y&R was back on track. Maria Arena Bell didn’t do shit to save Y&R. So Maria Arena Bell was taking credit for shit she didn’t do! It was under her tenure that we saw black characters reduced to the lowest common denominator and played on the 1st and the 15th. Heck even the Latino’s and Italians were turned into stereotypes. It took a strong actor to make sense of that mess. She even had a gay man return from the dead because he was gay when he faked his death and had a 40 plus year old man who is married to an early 20’s girl (Child molestation if you do the math of how old Lily was when he was 20) pretend to be that gay man. Chipmunks, skunks, and Roaches! And the Ass-ram storyline. Are just a taste of some of her work. Because as Maria said “We’re doing things we never done before!” Basally the bitch was doing things that should have never been done in the first place. She almost turned Y&R from Celine Dion to Paris Hilton! From Tina Turner to Keyshia Coles! From Angela Bassett to NeNe Leaks! From Jack Nicholson to Carrot Top! She took the show DOWNNNNNNNNNNNNNN! And yet she thought she was creating Shakespeare,Williams, Hansberry and Miller style theater on the television screen daily. And she had the nerve to say she never “dumbed down story.” At least under LML Neil, Dru, Lily, and Devon were on every day. And as Kristoff Saint John once said “never did I work more. LML had some bad storylines but at least she had a vision and direction. And she didn’t let Eric Braden monopolize everything. Because she had him cutting out paper art and flopping around on the floor. Log in to Reply Camp is not a sustainable model April 12, 2013 @everyone: On another note. Some of the best moments of OLTL were not when Ron and Frank were over there doing Passions lite, but back when a woman took the stand and was forced to tell the world that she was hooking! That she was taking men up to the hotel room and getting down and dirty to pay off a debt to a man she let take the fall for crime she committed as a teenager. And guess what there was no boats blowing up! No electric shocks while trying to sleep with your daughter either. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ez79MbbIeFA This is what made soaps great! These moments. These are the most memorable. And this at the end of the day will outlast any mobs, Stalkers and women pretending to be men in Iraq. Log in to Reply stoney07 April 12, 2013 YES LORD! I agree david. This is Y&R. I don’t understand those who come in saying it’s boring. THIS is the closest we are going to get writing-wise to Bill Bell’s Y&R. Now as far as the music and production, I can see where that’s a bit different, but as for writing…it’s still good. I agree that I don’t understand how people can say the Y&R plots are ridiculous or unbelievable, when everything on the other soaps are unbelievable. I’m not throwing one soap under the bus in favor of another, but give me a break. As much as some may get an instant erection at the thought of GH, there’s no denying that the show’s writing is unstable. Bring back all the vets you want…raise Gloria Monty from the dead, bring on Bill Bell and Douglas Marland for a cameo, the show will STILL have crappy writing because they rely toooo much on shock value and awe. The same way MAB did. I’d rather have a show built around rich characters, that actually MEANS something. I’m no Steve Burton fan, but even HE has been developed more than Sabrina on GH. I’m indifferent to Avery Bailey Clark, verging on actually liking the broad, but she’s not shown any more than SABRINA on GH. Yet we all find ourselves praising one show and trashing another. I don’t have a problem with people expressing their opinions, because I do it all the time..whether good or bad. HOWEVER, it just puzzles me how everything is wrong with one soap, but the same exact things you hate about one soap, is what you praise about another. Color me confused… Log in to Reply Camp is not a sustainable model April 12, 2013 @Stoney07: Because this is what some want: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoVi9OnlWg4 They like this stuff. Log in to Reply pjc722 April 12, 2013 I will give Josh his due on changing the show and giving the characters better dialogue, but I will not say he’s any where near Bill Bell in his accomplishments with the show. There was more to Bill’s stories than what we’re getting on the show right now. Bill’s stories ran for a year or two and more. By the time Olivia found out about Keesha and Nathan almost a year had past by. Even when Trisha was plotting against Victoria and Ryan it was months and months of great story leading up to a fantastic ending with a payoff that made us talk about it for weeks and think about it for longer. I agree with you, David, about the show being better. But Josh does have a long way to go to get into Bill shoes. I agree with many on here that some days the show is boring and others its captivating and fun and sweet and romantic and funny and just an all around great piece of drama. Log in to Reply hey mon April 12, 2013 Sorry, from the old man here, I will ‘pipe in’ in that JoshuaG is only 1/2 the writer that Bill Bell was. Bill Bell had a psycho around ALL of the time. When Sheila left, it was Mary Jo, then Phyllis, then Veronica Landers, and on and on and on. Josh isn’t giving me any psychos at all. Whoop-de-doo, the ratings are up. What is Josh writing against from last year. Genevieve and the ‘Beauty of Nature’ story-line? Anyone could post a great month against MAB’s worst. But we wern’t saying that last December and January when Josh was going against some of MAB’s best — (Town Drunk Nikki, Victor in Jail, Sharon and Adam Fire-trUCKing hard on New Year’s Eve on Victor’s Desk, Patty Shooting Jack at The Wedding). And here comes some more people over from ‘Hollywood Heights’… All of this orgasmic talk about JFP & JoshG using MAB’s best casting (Marcy Rylan as Abby, & Blake (Mr Pectorals) Hood as Kyle, is soon to be over. They will soon be replaced by Bobble-Head #1 as Abby, and Boring Kid #2 as Kyle. Throw in Stevie Burton 4 times a week… Avery 5 times a week… Hardly any Jack or Billy… Vicky being over-concerned about another baby… and I see the makings of trouble in Y&R’s future. Do I want it to be that way? No. I like that the ratings are going up, even though Latina Head Writer, Maria Elena Bell, was fired. Y&R is in cycles, just like everything else. For every brilliant s/l like ‘Drucilla vs LilliBelle’, there was ‘Ashley marries Rick & Blade Bladeson’. For every ‘Let’s Make Jack a Vietnem Vet with a Kid Named Keemo’, there was ‘Danny Comes Back to GC and Circket, with a Psycho Wife Named Phyllis’. So let’s stop bashing MAB, and then I won’t have to keep defending her. Log in to Reply SoapArmageddon April 13, 2013 The thing, for me, is that while I was often cringing with embarrassment or disappointment at the poor writing and production of LML’s regime, I still watched (maybe in the hope that the show would get better.) During MAB’s regime, I tuned out completely for EIGHTEEN months, only following the show on this site and other places. It was that bad. And now with Jill and Josh, Y&R is a show that I actually want to watch. I care about most of the characters again. I’m interested in what’s happening on screen. And most importantly, after every episode, I want to tune in the next day. Log in to Reply Camp is not a sustainable model April 13, 2013 @pferrando: Oh yeah LML was bad. But in comparison to Maria Arena Bell she was at least 30% okay. Where as Maria was 9.5% okay. But there were plenty of bad stories under LML. I will say Y&R was not unwatchable under her tenure like it was under Maria. But her stories didn’t help Y&R any. I would co-fault her with not doing everything she could to keep VR around. But then that is another story. So I don’t deny her badness. Just that she was not on the level of bad Maria was.
