INTERVIEW: Teresa Castillo on Her "Dream" Role as General Hospital's Nurse Sabrina

Student nurse Sabrina Santiago barrelled into Port Charles General Hospital, a mess of hair, thick-rimmed glasses and nervous energy. However, at the recent Nurses Ball, this quirky duckling transformed into quite the magnificent swan, securing Dr. Patrick Drake's (Jason Thompson) heart in the process!

Being gorgeous both inside and out is a trait the new R.N. shares with her portrayer Teresa Castillo. I had the pleasure of chatting up the break-out star at the Paley Center's recent celebration of General Hospital's 50th Anniversary. Castillo shares how much she is enjoying her time in Port Chuck, the friendships she's developed, and dished on what she and best pal Felix (Marc Samuel) will be up to in their battle against Dr. Britch (Kelly Thiebaud).

Daytime Confidential: This all has to be pretty exciting for you?

Teresa Castillo:  I feel like I’m dreaming right now.

DC: General Hospital’s 50th Anniversary, all of this and this is your first role on a soap opera, right?

TC:  It is, it is! I had seen soaps before, but I had no idea what I was getting into with the shooting schedule. It’s challenging, a little bit, to get the hang of it, the flow of it all, but I feel like I finally settled in.

DC: Well you’re not just settled in, you’re in a great love triangle! Pretty great for your first soap role?

TC:  I’m having a blast; I really am.

DC: It’s wonderful when you love what you’re doing. It shows on screen with you.

TC:  Thank you, you couldn’t ask for anything more, right?  To be able to do what you love for a living and have other people enjoy it as well.  It’s just so fulfilling and I’m so thankful.

DC: Sabrina wasn’t the role you originally auditioned for, was it?

TC:  No. Actually, about a year and a half ago I went in for the role of Deloris Pedilla. The way I was brought in, was that Mark Teschner had seen me in an episode of Franklin & Bash and said "That girl, bring her in."  I wasn’t right for it, clearly.  He ended up bringing me back in several months later to read for this role. I believe her name was Aria. I don’t think they give out the real names.

DC: They may have stolen that from Pretty Little Liars.

TC:  Is there an Aria? I like that name! I could do that! But, from there the audition process took about four to five months and then it was pretty quick once I tested.

DC: Sabrina, Felix and Elizabeth are my new favorite trio.

TC:  Thank you!  We have a lot of fun together off-set too.  I feel that relationship really comes thorough.

DC: You have to tell us how it is to work with Brooklyn Rae Silzer (Emma).

TC:  I’m just melting.  She’s adorable, talented and so smart.

DC: The Nurses Ball just wrapped up.  Britt announces she’s pregnant with Patrick’s baby.  What’s next for all of you?

TC:  Felix and I are in the process of trying to prove that this baby is not really Patrick’s.  So, we’ll see if that works out.  We suspect that it might not be his.

DC: I think you might be right.

Seriously do not like the character of Sabrina. It feels like gh is the Sabrina show. I feel that she should be running around and hanging out with the teenagers instead of the adult.

Patrick looks like he is the older man preying on the young woman and he is not that old. I would rather see him with Carly then with Sabrina.

Better yet just bring Robin back and this whole Sabrina and Patrick thing could be thrown away. It is so stupid. I don't like the Cinderella storyline.

I am happy that she has a job she loves.

But I can't stand this character. I wish she would put a spin on it and make her more mature. I don't want to watch a Disney movie.

I'm waiting for her to snag the role of Jodi Arias for Lifetime. That way she will have less screentime since she will be doing the movie. Then hopefully her PR person will blow up her head so she will believe she's too big for GH then leave.

Okay, I've enjoyed the brief scenes we have gotten of Sabrina since her makeover. She did seem too childish for Patrick, but she really doesn't anymore. Jason Thompson is 36 and doesn't seem like an old man that people are making him out to be. He was a playboy not long ago. People harp on the dumbest shit when they don't like a character. I will agree that she was being propped to the high heavens for the longest time, but it regressed and she hasn't really been on that much.

I wish people would let go of this unhealthy Robin thing. KMc doesn't want to come back and if she did Scrubs would be together. Patrick and Jason Thompson are too good to be in limbo. He has proven that he can be a great leading man and I'm ready to see it. It seems Sabrina will have much more a spine now that the makeover is complete, but I'm glad she hasn't completely lost her innocence. It was over the top, but now I think its the right blend.

I'm a big fan of the Sabrina, Felix, Elizabeth trio too. Its about damn time Elizabeth had some friends. I love that they've built a set of characters to focus on at the hospital so we can finally have some hospital drama. I've already noticed Sabrina being FAR less annoying and I think the actress will now have some freedom to put a little bit of her own stamp on the character. I'm sure she was directed to be as nerdy and shy as possible for the longest time. Now if Patrick and Sabrina don't work out I could see her moving onto someone else. Patrick has multiple viable pairings, but I would hate Patrick and Carly. Patrick and Sam, I would be here for that. I would have LOVED Patrick and Elizabeth, but now they've developed such a nice friendship, I think it might be too late for that one.

I think her enthusiasm has been showing through on screen. I've enjoyed watching her character's evolution over the past year. While everyone would probably rather have Robin back, Kimberly McCullough doesn't want to come back full time, so I'd like to see where Sabrina can go with Patrick. Besides, if Kimberly DOES decide to return someday, it will be great soapy fun to see how Patrick handles that dilemma. Now that the "Ugly Betty" portion of her storyline is over, I hope she starts showing more confidence to augment her strong principles.

Nothing against the actress, except for her singing, but I just loathe the character of Sabrina!! It doesn't seem like a character that Patrick would fall for.

Kimberly McCullough / Robin being or not being on the show has nothing to do with the dislike of Sabrina's character. There are plenty of other women Patrick couls be paired with.

She sounds like a great person and it is wonderful to have the job that you love. I just wish that TPTB handled her character better. For me, it isn't about Robin, it is about the story. Her level of maturity didn't seem to fit Patrick, and her character was on so much and was so one note for so long that I stopped caring. When they fleshed her out, it was too late for me.

The bad part is, I like Patrick and Liz.

Sabrina was perfectly fine until the over the top pimping and propping by the entire cast.

I know. Smile I was just responding to the first comment that said 'bring back Robin'. I'm sure if Ron could bring her back, he would.

I am sure the young lady who plays her is lovely and a good actress, but the character was pushed so hard down our throats. I am just not a fan of the character, and I feel like many fans are just waiting for the Robin/Patrick reunion, so it's hard to invest in a Sabrina/Patrick pairing. I think they would be better off putting her with someone else, like Michael or Milo. I think there could be potential with a Liz/Patrick/AJ triangle. Those are 3 characters the fans all care about, and Patrick choosing between Robin and Liz (when Robin comes back to wrap this up) would create a lot more drama and interest than Patrick dumping Sabrina for Robin.

Oh, thanks Smile My comment was actually more directed to dimera87, concerning their remarks on KMc.

I'm very glad the actress has her 'dream' job, however, I can't stomach the over the top pimping and propping of this character and it has nothing to do with her domination of the entire hospital side of the canvas its all about Sabrina (who I find extremely linear and self-absorbed); Or...

"Patrick being led through the nose by every character to Sabrina." I don't care who Patrick ends up with, although, I had a preference its just strange storytelling how he was just leeched to this charcter in such a weird way he wasn't allowed a storyline or screen presence without her or/and dialoging about her.

I'm a fan of decades and soap savvy so I have "no" issues with him moving on or even an iconic character as Robin Scorpio being replaced. But I found Robin's story "lacking in emotional resonance" when this was a prime opportunity to grip me in her demise in old school soap storytelling..instead I got Sabrina coming and going at warped speed from her day 1 scene 1 an insta-triangle w/two newbies.

I do have a problem with Patrick (who had little POV until everyone tells him to go after Sabrina) asking her on a first date, kisses her for the first time at an event honoring his dead wife them standing as a family unit in front of a pic of his wife. This story has no heart which causes me not to able to relate to it in any visceral way.

Nor has it to do with my fav, a vet, being reduced to second fiddle so Sabrina can shine, or the way she was auto-written in 'the rooting factor' in a psuedo-rendition of a fairy tale Ugly Betty.

For me, it has all to do with such flagrantly intensely skewed storytelling re: this character, concept and interpretation, being a blatent writer's pet while Britt gets so much of the writing against her. e.g.,

Sabrina's name said in eppys the week of March 25th: 19x Monday, 26x Tuesday, 27x Wednesday, and 20x Thursday. This is just this one week....

And, she leads in eppy counts. Come on now, really. I can go on and on with my issues regarding this character but you get my drift....I have little use for stories that try to train me so boldly, overtly like this. Its a turn-off why so heavy handed? Just take it easy...

This is Robin Scorpio who never thought she'd marry, have children, or live to have a life even close to normalcy but it became the "Sabrina show". I remember crying so many times during Robin storylines e.g. Stone, her HIV, at the NB when Jason swooped her up. ..this one, I didn't shed a tear Ijust wanted Patrick, Sabrina, and Emma off the stage. And when that didn't happen I FF right through it.

What would have worked for me? As a fav poster of mine well put it,
"seeing the Patrick/Robin love story loosely resemble that of the movie/book The Vow. In it, the woman had an accident and lost a certain point of time in her memory, that being the time frame in which she met and fell in love with her husband." Then I would have maybe jumped up and down for a Sabrina pairing with Patrick but this all that is sweetness and light writing is just gag worthy.

On the good foot, I'm hoping they'll flip the script, and writing stops the Sabrina worship at some point, maybe that will turn it around for me. As it stands I find this character quite annoying.

Now that Kristen "starr" is gone, they should pair Sabrina with Michael. It would be a lot more enjoyable when Serena Baldwin (Kristen Alderson) returns.

I agree with the posts so far. Ive got no inherent problem with the character or the actress just with the amount of screen time and the story. If she were pushed in to the younger set - pairing her with Michael or milo or even someone like matt were he still around - that would make sense to me, but opposite Patrick it all seems silly and my feeling on that has zero to do with robin. I could have seen Patrick with liz - that felt like the organic direction to go in - but instead they went in this direction and it was so non-organic they only way to try and make it work was to coopt all these other characters into saying that they see the chemistry. I could have also even seen carly instead of todd/carly/johnny where again johnny was way too young to be viable as carlys great love. I would also add while I enjoy felix and Sabrina being partners in crime, liz should be friendly with them rather than being the third amigo. She is in her 30s and it feels stupid every time shes hugging and kissing on Sabrina for some new Patrick smiled at me today milestone. Liz having her head explode as Patrick starts getting close to carly and maybe becoming an ally of the britch just as a better option might have been interesting especially at the end of the day when liz found out that shed be aiding the people that kidnapped her close friend.

As for sam Patrick, they have an easy connection some natural angst in the role Jason played in robins supposed death and they would be all sorts of pretty but the timing was off. I bought Jason/sam/john and at the time they needed someone to play off Patrick she was knee deep in that story. I could see Patrick and sam had sbu and kimm wanted to leave at the same time

I love love love Teresa Castillo. Shes gorgeous and so sweet. I havent always liked the material they have given the character of Sabrina, but shes working what shes given. I love her friendship with Felix and Elizabeth, and i actually really do like her with Patrick. 2 beautiful people together makes me happy. Plus her and Emma are an awesome little duo. I do however want Robin back. When that happens, i dont want Teresa to leave the show. My perfect pairing for her would be Ethan if he were to ever come back full time. I liked the idea of her with Milo but Milo is only in scenes a couple times every 3 months lol i also want Juan to come back, realize he's gay and have and form a kick ass gay supercouple with Felix lol

I hope everyone here is calling the GH Comment Line every day that Sabrina is on to complain. I know I am. I can't stand the character and the actress has no talent other than a decent singing voice.

I wish she had been cast as Padilla because she'd be gone by now.

God, imagine having a job where you have to listen to the GH comment line? The employer would have to supply a crapload of drugs to get me to listen to all of that whining!

Just because you or I don't like someone doesn't mean they have no talent. It just means that you or I don't like them. (It's amazing how many Lee Strasbergs there are who watch the soaps!) Laughing out loud
