HBO Buys Rights to Whoopi Goldberg's Moms Mabley Documentary

HBO announced today they have acquired the rights to Whoopi Goldberg’s documentary Moms Mabley: I Got Somethin' To Tell You. Through performance footage, photos and commentary from historians, celebs and comics, including: Joan Rivers, Eddie Murphy, Sidney Poitier, Kathy Griffin, Bill Cosby, Harry Belafonte, Jerry Stiller, Anne Meara, and Quincy Jones, the documentary will explore the life of the legendary comic.

In a released statement, Sheila Nevins, president of HBO Documentary films said:

What could be better than Whoopi bringing Moms to HBO? We’ve always known how special Moms was, and I can’t think of a better marriage.

Goldberg stated:

Moms Mabley has been a huge inspiration to me and so many others, but not a lot of folks outside of the comedy world know about her legacy. There are a lot of us who wouldn’t be working today without pioneers like her. HBO gave me my first break on TV, so it’s only fitting that Moms has a home there now.

The documentary is slated to l debut April 20 at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival. This marks Goldberg’s first time as a director.

I sooo look forward to this. I remember watching Moms Mabley as a kid and loved her. I have one of her comedy albums on my iTunes and play it when I need a good laugh. I know Whoopi’s been talking about and honoring Moms since the beginning of her own career so I really hope this is a big success for her.

Sight unseen, I already know I'm going to love this documentary. There are some big Moms Mobley fans in my family.

It's kind of disappointing that there no clips of her performances on YOutube, none that I could find anyway.
