Which Soaps Have a Chance at a Best Drama Daytime Emmy Nomination?

TV Guide’s Michael Logan has published his yearly prediction about which soaps have the best and worst chance of landing a Daytime Emmy Best Drama nomination. From the report:

The Bold and the Beautiful: After months and months of that hopelessly inane Liam-Hope-Steffy drivel, exec producer-head writer Brad Bell finally put the "bold" back in his show by killing off its longtime matriarch Stephanie Forrester with lung cancer — a move that was painful yet weirdly exhilarating and ballsy beyond belief. Bell wisely submitted the two episodes (shows 6448 and 6449, airdates: Nov. 12-13, 2012) where Stephanie's family and friends gather for an Irish-themed party to celebrate her life, little knowing they'll also be saying goodbye. Watching Celtic Woman perform "Danny Boy" at the bash was enough to put us on the floor, but the kicker left us immobile. Out of nowhere, Stephanie announces that she's going off to die at an undisclosed location and that no one — not even her children — will ever see her again. It was shocking, cruel, heartbreaking and so very Stephanie, who was a control freak to the very end. You've never seen anything like it in soaps, and you never will again.

Chance of a nomination: Excellent.

If there was any justice in the world, OLTL would not only be nominated for best show but would win. The final two episodes were brilliant, and it would be such a great slap in the face to ABC for cancelling the show — and great PR for the show as it continues online.

THAT’s the episodes Brad submitted for B&B?! Those celtic women dancing! LOL!

Of COURSE Corday submitted the climax of Days’ most insidious and disgusting storyline of 2012. Granted, Arianne Zucker’s acting is great as it always is. But even that’s not enough to save that story. The DAYSaster was pretty good though.

GH’s Téa & Sam’s babies being born was a great storyline. Although the element of Heather and Weekend at Bernies was ridiculous and over-the-top campy. The pathogen storyline, however, was just ridiculously silly. Even if it did include Edward’s last scene. I don’t think they’re gonna win any prizes with this selection. Why didn’t they submit Edward’s memorial??? Or Robin’s funeral?

Kind of ironic though that they submitted an episode starring Téa, a woman who they can’t even mention anymore on the show! Nice jab at PP. I really hope GH would win it with this episode, it would serve PP utterly right! :)

Y&R’s episodes 9.999 and 10.000 were really good. The 9.999 was better than the actual 10.000th episode. They had action, lots of cast members and it felt great. Wise choice.

After the excellent Stephanie story, however, they went RIGHT back to the insufferable Liam-Steffy-Hope triangle and has actually become the worst show on television (not just soaps!).

Though FL / Tea won’t likely get nominated as best actress – due to the preselection vote, I don’t think she was included, she was certainly overlooked during her run on the broadcast version of OLTL …RH/Todd should be nominated for his time on GH . He helped liven up the place… though I’m sorry there was no self-help group scenes with Todd and Luke. Missed opportunity….
B& B’s on air send off of Stephanie was underwhelming with the Celtic singers – although the flashmob goodbye to Susan Flannery that CBS posted online was priceless and worth watching a few times – if only all soap divas ( and divos) got so celebrated when they made their exit!!

Frank Valentini stinks at picking Emmy submissions. He always picked those terrible musical episodes :( I do agree with his choice of episode about the end of Fraternity Row. Viki’s monologue was great. But the other should have been the episode where the escaped prisoners had people at gunpoint. It ended with three exterior shots as you heard the guns fire. Three cliffhangers, one episode. THAT was awesome.

FV and company could still be nominated for OLTL? That would be great if they won for GH and OLTL ( different awards) … B&B will bring home an honour or two- not sure what …

I think B&B has the best submissions. FV has never had a knack for selecting Emmy episodes and I’d be rather surprised if GH actually pulled off a win this year.

It is SO STUPID to keep giving out awards with so few soaps on the air.

I still have a lot of love for daytime, but four soaps gaining nominations out of six eligible contenders renders the whole thing meaningless. That means a soap has a 66% chance of getting a Best Drama nomination SIMPLY BY EXISTING.

It would be like the Oscars nominating 180 movies for Best Picture last year.

Brad Bell deserves no recognition at the emmys whatsoever. For the past couple of years this show has been a pile of crap. Admittedly the Stephanie death episodes were watchable but of the 4 soaps, B&B is miles behind in last place. GH forever!

B&B had the most dramatic send off that year. The death of Stephanie, but more important, SF leaving this show!! It lost two of its biggest stars and its still a ratings winner.
