HomePop ConfidentialATLTika Sumpter SCANDALIZES Promo for Tyler Perry’s ‘The Haves and the Have Nots’! (VIDEO) Jamey Giddens May 7, 2013 ATL, One Life to Live, OWN, Pop Confidential, The Haves and The Have Nots 20 Comments Soap operas are coming to OWN after all! As part of The Mighty O's programming pact with Tyler Perry, the one-man entertainment brand has created a sudsy, new drama entitled The Haves and The Have Nots for Ms. Winfrey's previously touchy-feely channel. Based on one of Perry's stage plays, The Haves and The Have Nots is the upstairs/downstairs saga of a ruthlessly-wealthy WASP family and an African-American clan headed up by their God-fearing housekeeper. The soap stars Dukes of Hazzard alum John Schneider as Judge Jim Cryer, patriarch of the powerful Cryer dynasty. Judge Cryer has been secretly paying for the services of high-priced escort Candace Young (One Life to Live's Tika Sumpter), who just so happens to be the long-lost daughter of his family's church-going housekeeper Hanna (In The Heat of The Night's Crystal Fox)! Passions alum Eva Tamargo appears as Celine, chef to the Cryer family. Peter Parros (As The World Turns) stars as David Harrington, a wealthy friend of the Cryers. Gavin Houston (Guiding Light) portrays Jeffrey Harrington, substance abuse counselor for the Cryer's troubled son Wyatt (Aaron O'Connell). Watch the steamy trailer below! The Haves and The Have Nots debuts at 9/8c, May 28 on OWN. Log in to Reply J Bernard Jones May 7, 2013 I’d rather be chewed into pieces by psychotic ferrets than watch this hot ass mess. (And I love that cast!) Log in to Reply angrierblackerman May 7, 2013 Ugh, a daily version of every Tyler Perry cliche ridden movie? No thanks! Love Tika and most of the cast, but I am so tired of this stale formula. Why the Black and Latina women have to be the maids all the time? I can just hear the opening theme now… (Queue ‘soulful hum’, and Women of Brewster Place music) Log in to Reply appleridge May 7, 2013 OMG Tika looks like she is gonna raise hell Log in to Reply thecourt99 May 7, 2013 I was told that this was a “black version” of Downton Abbey Log in to Reply badass May 7, 2013 I love the cast that he got for the show. I will give it a shot never know he might suprise the hell out of us Log in to Reply MsAgentProvocateur1 May 7, 2013 The funny thing is that people have been skewering the new AMC and OLTL for their supposed low production values. This looks even lower budget. For all the actors and crew who are invested in this, I hope it works out for them. I’m sure someone will watch (that someone will not be me though), as TP has his fanbase. Log in to Reply Sweet_Thing May 7, 2013 Hmmm. This looks like it could be interesting. Is it a daily or weekly show? Log in to Reply bobbyew May 8, 2013 That is the question, is it daily or weekly? Can someone please answer. Log in to Reply Camp is not a sustainable model May 8, 2013 @Everyone: This looks like a hot mess! I’m sorry but Tyler Perry just did another version of his bad TBS sitcoms. Tika Sumpter can do better than this mess. A better soap creator would be someone like Mara Brock Akil (The Game, Girlfriends) She knows the genre well and could pull something off. This mess looks like some sort of In Living Color spoof of a soap opera with black people in it. And Stoney all Tyler Perry needs to be is the investor. Let real writers with real talent create the content. Heck I could produce a better series than this with a shoe box and some puppets. And why does he have the housekeeper talking like she is a house-negro on the plantation? “Betta not go in ‘der!” Agnes take the script! Log in to Reply NathanHastingsSr. May 8, 2013 I’ll give it a shot… Log in to Reply logan_echolls May 8, 2013 Thank goodness Mara Brock Akil is not associated with this. After what she did to Girlfriends the last 2 seasons and I have no idea what The Game has turned into since it moved to BET. That woman has ruined her own shows. The production does look bad but TP is saving money since he has his own studio. Hopefully after the first season, he will get more money and can up the production values. I will watch this show. Not all the Black, Latina characters are maids. You see the rich best friend is Black and I think the judge wife is Latina. I was NOT a fan of any of TP’s TBS shows. Meet the Browns had some good episodes but otherwise it wasn’t that good. For Better or Worse is the worst show ever! But I will watch only because Tika is on there. Log in to Reply Nk3play2 May 8, 2013 Saddest thing about the people criticizing this; I think most of them are black!!! And to soap fans in general who are criticizing, you’ve watched much worse ON daytime; one thing Tyler Perry can do, is drama; it’s his comedy or dramedy that comes off as a bit over the top, but his drama is pure gold. If you don’t believe me, just watch The Family That Preys with starring Cathy Bates and Alfre Woodard. Brock destroyed Girlfriends and The Game within two seasons. Unlike the rest of these snobby soap fans who will watch just about anything in Daytime, I will be watching this because I know what Tyler Perry can do with drama. [/quote] What’s sad is to expect ALL of us to fall in line and shout “Halleluyer” just because African-Americans happen to be involved in this venture. Aren’t we past the subtle racism of lowered expectations by now? Log in to Reply Van May 8, 2013 OK, I think this trailer looks really good and I’m already loving all of the actors involved. The acting looks really good too! I’m in. Log in to Reply Secrets and Lies May 8, 2013 Great point SoapArmageddon.
