Her son Corbin Bernsen shared the news with fans on Facebook. Daytime Confidential's thoughts and prayers are with Cooper’s family. Read Bernsen's touching message after the jump. 62 Responses pferrando May 8, 2013 I appreciate and think Corbin has shown such grace in the way he’s updated the public and Jeanne’s fans during this difficult time. We all will miss her so much and the void will be one that can’t be filled for us. Log in to Reply Amtronic May 8, 2013 Let me be clear — Y&R had better do an entire hour long episode recapping her history on the show. Nothing less. Log in to Reply Ryan-Scott May 8, 2013 No! No! No! Log in to Reply LoisKibbee May 8, 2013 Devastatingly sad….rest in peace dear Jeanne! We will always remember you! ♥ Log in to Reply LoisKibbee May 8, 2013 They sure better! Log in to Reply stefanstavros May 8, 2013 May her fire and passion forever live on! We shared birthdays and I’m honored to have that in common with such a GREAT LADY! Log in to Reply soapjunkie88 May 8, 2013 That is so sad. RIP Jeanne. I don’t know what to say. My thoughts are with her family. I hope they help each other through this. The void can’t be filled. Log in to Reply harlee490 May 8, 2013 Between the tears I’m sort of shell shock, knowing it was possible but not wanting to believe it. Her spirit is looking down and seeing all the love from her family and all love from fans that been with her since the beginning and smiling, waving those diamonds around screaming at Jill, I love you Jeanne for giving me and falling in love with Mrs. Katherine Chancellor 40 years of entertainment, laughter, and tears…may God be with you. I got to go watch my clips. :(( :(( :(( :(( :(( 0:) Log in to Reply david46208 May 8, 2013 RIP Jeanne Cooper! Log in to Reply mango May 8, 2013 RIP Duchess. You’ll never be forgotten, Jeanne. Thank you for everything! Log in to Reply fmat55 May 8, 2013 Such a wonderful spirit she had. I was thrilled when she finally won her Emmy. She will be missed. Y&R better have a tribute that is fitting for “the Duchess”. RIP Log in to Reply Ryan-Scott May 8, 2013 That woman enchanted me since 1991 when I started watching Y&R. I got to meet her twice at the Y&R Fan event. One time I told her if I could have had a third grandma I would have wanted it to be her. She was so sweet in her reply. How kind of Corbin and Co. to keep us in the loop this whole time about her situation because they know how much she means to all of us. What a sad day… Log in to Reply MsAgentProvocateur1 May 8, 2013 Eternal Peace in rest to our Duchess of Daytime. What can you say of one who has been a part of your life longer than most friends and boyfriends? She was a consummate professional, a witty, bawdy wildly entertaining talent and she will be greatly missed. She represented the best and most compelling of drama, not just in the daytime but anytime. I’m glad we have some great memories of her wonderful performances and they are mostly recorded for posterity. Still, it is sad to realize that one of Daytime’s Titans no longer walks among us. Thanks to Corbin Bernsen’s grace, we at least had time to think about what it might mean to have to say goodbye. To him and his family, I offer deep condolences. Rest in peace, Ms. Jeanne Cooper. You will be greatly missed Log in to Reply giogio May 8, 2013 So so sad. Condolences to the family and the crew of Y&R who worked with her. They must be devastated. I just dont even believe it. RIP Katherine. Log in to Reply Coffee_Junkie May 8, 2013
Let me be clear — Y&R had better do an entire hour long episode recapping her history on the show. Nothing less.
It would mean having to rob Avery and Dylan an entire hour of airtime. It’s not going to happen. For many years, I’ve watched Y&R ONLY for Jill and Katherine. The day I have been dreading for years has finally arrived. ;-( Jill and Kay are no more. “This” Y&R simply is not my Y&R. The (new) powers that be have simply changed the show too much and are devoting all their time and energy on characters I really don’t care about one iota. My days as a viewer are drawing to a close. I just have better things to do with that hour. Maybe I will hang on if they have a Cane/Jill battle for Chancellor Industries storyline (which they seemed to be setting up last week). But Jess Walton’s basically retired. So….I don’t know how much screen time they would give such a plot unless she actually started to work more. I will say this: I hope they explain Katherine’s absence post haste: I don’t want three months of them *talking* to Katherine on the phone or pointing and saying, “oh, you just missed Katherine!” That would be morbid. Poor Murphy. He’s gonna be sent on a permanent fishing trip now, LOL. And what about Esther? Log in to Reply NathanHastingsSr. May 8, 2013 Noooo! Dear God in Heaven! No more suffering. May you rest in peace Duchess. Log in to Reply Ryan-Scott May 8, 2013 NOW people in cyberland can report on this and it won’t be tasteless like a few days ago per what Corbin had written what was happening which I just find obscene. Log in to Reply stefanstavros May 8, 2013 I think to appease those of us fans who LOVE the legends of Y&R, they should somehow bring John Abbott back from the dead! Katherine Chancellor is irreplaceable, but it would soften the blow a bit if we got our beloved John back, in my opinion. Log in to Reply Yoryla May 8, 2013 Even though I knew this was coming, my stomach turned when I saw this headline. Thank You Ms. Cooper, for gracing all of us with your presence for 40 years, as Katherine Chancellor. It wasn’t just the show that celebrated this milestone, it was the star behind it. And as I see it, Jeanne and Y&R are aligned now and forever. Both forever linked to each other with bringing enormous success to one another, and to us viewers, and fans all around the world. Rest In Peace, Jeanne. Log in to Reply soapjunkie88 May 8, 2013 I think we should take a moment, let Jeanne Cooper’s fans mourn her before we talk about anything story-related on Y&R. Seriously. She just died a few hours ago and people start laughing-out-loud at the thought of Murphy going fishing on a permanent basis? I hope that Y&R does this true legend justice … but anything else. Anything else shouldn’t matter right now and especially not in a comment under an article like that. Log in to Reply nysam May 8, 2013 THANK YOU Ms. Cooper for entertaining my mother and I for years! She made Y & R what it is today. She never slept on her watch, that’s for sure. If her character was sick on the show she brought it on. She played her character well. I hope they do it well on the show in her memory. She certainly deserves it. We love you and will always cherish what you brought to Y & R and to your beloved character Katherine Chancellor…..RIP!!!! Log in to Reply Sweet_Thing May 8, 2013 She was from the Golden Age of Television in more ways than one. She will truly be missed but I believe she’s in a better place. I didn’t need this today. So…..thanks, for that. Log in to Reply SoapArmageddon May 8, 2013 I first watched a full episode of Y&R in or around 1991. When Jeanne Cooper appeared on screen, I was fascinated. She kept me fascinated throughout the following years. This is a huge loss for us Y&R fans and for the industry at large. She’ll be sorely missed. Log in to Reply Restless Fan May 8, 2013 My heart is broken. Just found out an absolutely devastated about the news. RIP Duchess. Thank you for all the entertainment you have given me as a 30+ year viewer of “Y & R”. I’m sure you and your character will be given a fitting send-off for you and for Katherine Chancellor Sterling Murphy! Log in to Reply 1titanman May 8, 2013 There will never be another Katherine Chancellor on television! She made Katherine and both the actress & character are iconic. We love you Wilma Jeanne and I can see her telling Bill Bell, Sr up in the big blue sky what he missed in the last 8 years. Those two are laughing it up- Goodbye Duchess! Log in to Reply slick234 May 8, 2013 So sad about this. She continually delivered every year despite her age. At 83 she was acting circles around people half to a quarter of her age. RIP Jeanne Cooper. You have taught people in the medium what acting really is and i hope that alot of the younger actors have learned from you. Log in to Reply CtFireWitch May 8, 2013 Goodbye Katherine, goodbye Duchess. I’m glad she was able to pass away at her home surrounded by her family. That’s the best way. I just hope Y&R doesn’t replace her, she’s one of a kind. Log in to Reply JasamForever May 8, 2013 My thoughts are with the family. She will be missed as Katherine Chancellor. Log in to Reply Duchess May 8, 2013 I am absolutely heartbroken about this. I had the chance to meet Jeanne at the Y&R fanclub dinner two years ago and she was beyond even what I could have imagined she’d be. So funny, gracious, warm, friendly and literally had us laughing for five minutes. When I told her my Mom used to make me cover my eyes during the kissing scenes when I was younger her response was “Well what a shame.” So perfect and so Jeanne! She really was like a member of the family for the 40 years that my Mom has watched Y&R and the 25 years that I have watched. RIP you amazing lady. Heaven is lucky to have you! Log in to Reply basilnsybil May 8, 2013 Much condolences to her family. Jeanne will be missed her passion and sparkle brought so much. It was so very generous and gracious of Corbin to share with us. Log in to Reply DevinMissesOLTL May 9, 2013 I have never been a Y&R fan but my mother and grandmother were! My mother would go on about “Mrs. Chancellor”. Mrs. Chancellor this and Mrs. Chancellor that Lol! And if it wasn’t her it was Niki Reed! My grandmother hasn’t watched a soap in 35 years but two people she remembers and wil bring up every blue moon are Mrs. Chancellor and Mona Kane(AMC) LOL! Those were her favs when she watched back in the day. This is a great loss for the daytime community and television at large. But Ms. Cooper has left her fans a great body of work to recall. It’s the end of an era for me. I don’t care for the “new era” of Y&R and don’t have a need to stick around much longer. Log in to Reply AlexB May 9, 2013 RIP Jeannie Cooper. You couldn’t help but have a feeling that this was coming once she had to be taken back to the hospital. She’s not hurting any more. It was time for her to go home. As for Y&R and the new regime, do not do Jeannie Cooper, Katherine Chancellor, or Y&R the dis-service of not honoring this great actress and what she has meant to daytime as a whole. I my mom always talks about Jill, Katherine, and the house. She figured that if it ever came down to it they’d burn it to the groudn rather than conceed defeat. LOL. As for Cane putting his impostor hands all over what isn’t his, Katherine has kids, doesn’t she have some grandchildren that can come and oust that dullard. Mac can’t be the only one. New Chancellor blood if your please. Log in to Reply fmat55 May 9, 2013 Besides MacKenzie being her granddaughter, Devon is her grandson. Log in to Reply marknsprmo May 9, 2013 A presence like Jeanne Cooper can never really die. She will live on every time we remember her in our hearts and our minds. It is always a space that no one else can fill when someone like her dies. I hope that Corben and family and friends can look back with love and know that they had something quite special in their lives. As we did every day that she was on tv. We will miss both Jeanne and her alter ego Kay greatly. Log in to Reply Coffee_Junkie May 9, 2013
RIP Jeannie Cooper. Maybe they’ll be kinder to you. Log in to Reply giogio May 9, 2013 Coffeejunkie, I saw that and I didnt think you were being disrespectful. I can see your heart was broken. Im not afraid to talk about future story lines cause what I want to know is what ALEX B was talking about “Cane’s imposter hands”. What did I miss. Was the real Cane killed and this is his twin? Log in to Reply noway May 9, 2013 Coffeejunkie, I didn’t find your commentary disrespectful, it was just who you are, and after watching Jeanne for 35 years she would want people to just be themselves. It was obvious you care deeply for Jeanne and her position on the show. Log in to Reply Coffee_Junkie May 9, 2013 I’m totally tearing up right now! Good thing my office door is closed.
