Joss Whedon to Wesleyan Graduates: "You're All Going to Die"

Geek God Joss Whedon is no stranger to death.  Whether it’s Marvel’s The Avengers or Buffy the Vampire Slayer, death (and killing off his characters) is always a recurring element of the “Whedonverse.”

Recently, Whedon delivered the commencement speech for Wesleyan University.  The message he had for recent grads was,  “You’re all going to die.”

Whedon expanded on this point by discussing the contradiction between the desires of one’s body versus their mind:

[Y]ou are at your physical peak. Your bodies have just gotten off the ski slope at the peak of growth and potential! And now comes the black diamond mogul run to the grave.

And the weird thing is… your body wants to die. On a cellular level that’s what it wants. And that’s—probably?—not what you want. I’m confronted by a great deal of grand and worthy ambition from this student body. You want to be politicians, social workers, you want to be artists. Your body’s ambition? Mulch. Your body wants to make some babies and then go in the ground and fertilize things. That’s it!

Whedon graduated Wesleyan University in 1987, when Bill Cosby was the commencement speaker.  According to Whedon, the comedy legend had this nugget for his class, “You're not going to change the world, so don't try."

I've despised this man ever since he fired Charisma Carpenter from Angel because she got pregnant. And I still do.

I'd forgotten about that. Angel sucked after CC got canned, especially that ill-conceived final season. And the final two seasons of Buffy still send a shiver down my spine. Godawful! I do remember he started that crap about not giving the audience what they want but rather what they need. Such arrogance! That SHIELD shit won't last two minutes on a gumball machine of a network like ABC.

Bill Cosby seems to be an ass, as well.

Most people who are perceived to be brilliant, I think, usually are giant asses -- mainly because they begin to believe all the shiny, happy crap that is written about them.

On Bill Cosby - "You're not going to change the world, so don't try."
Was the student body all Anglo? Would he have said the same thing to an all Black college? I mean saying this to anyone regardless is a slap in the face to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. a man who attempted to change the hateful bigotry against blacks, blacks like Mr. Cosby.

How'd this become about race? We're talking celebrities who believe their own bullshit. That seems to fit Dr. Cosby to a T. He seems to love to hear the sound of his own voice -- even when he has nothing to say. You're certainly right about his attempt to end black-on-black bigotry, but many times with Cos, you gotta cut through a tall, thick wall of babble to get to his point.

Why would anyone look for a racial component where it seems completelety irrelevant is just beyond me.
