HomeTagsComings & GoingsIs The Young and the Restless Recasting Tucker McCall? Jamey Giddens June 6, 2013 42 Comments Veteran soap star Stephen Nichols took part in the recent tribute to Jeanne Cooper on The Young and the Restless, but will another actor soon be playing the role of Kay Chancellor's music mogul son, Tucker McCall? According to Soap Opera Uncensored, it could happen. From the report: This is juicy: Insiders report to UNCENSORED that Tucker is returning to Genoa City long term but he won’t be played by fan fave Stephen Nichols, who returned recently for Jeanne Cooper’s tribute episode. Says a mole, “They’re working on finding someone to play him since Nichols will not be returning. Might a fight for Chancellor be in the works once Kay's will is read?” Two words: Guiding Light's Robert Newman. Okay, that was four words. 42 Responses pferrando June 6, 2013 While I liked Tucker for the most part…not really excited by his return or YET ANOTHER RECAST by this current team. I’d rather have a face in the part that I DON’T know. But so what FOJ will get the part do you think? >) Log in to Reply ChristianDavis148 June 6, 2013 Why oh why, why, why!? Tucker was a pointless character and is not needed! Just another actor being added to an already over-stuffed cast! Ugh! Log in to Reply pennywise555 June 6, 2013 If this is true I’m going to throw a party!!!!! The change from a outgoing, bigger than life, corporate raider Tucker that had romantic chemistry ♥ with Jill to an always brooding,over-the-hill rock & roll playboy, that was an asshole to females was the worst thing that ever happened to the Chancellor family. Log in to Reply DanMan869 June 6, 2013 See, when I’d read the promo blurb on Nelson’s Facebook page this morning, I would have thought Y&R was recasting Phyllis. Jamey, is there any word on the street about what they’re going to do with Phyllis (recast, write out, kill off–heaven forbid on the latter!) after Michelle Stafford’s departure next month? As for Tucker… I’m not sure the character is that necessary–especially after Jeanne’s passing and the death of Katherine. The story and character never really worked the entire time Nichols was on the show–and without Cooper (or Nichols, oddly), who cares about Tucker anymore? Log in to Reply pennywise555 June 6, 2013
But so what FOJ will get the part do you think? >)
Who are JFP’s male friend who are 60ish? If he fits with Jill, I want him to be a FOJ because FOJ’s get screen time and the Chancellors will live on. Beside SN was hired by Barbara Bloom, not the creative team, so he was a FOBB. I wonder if nu-Tucker will get half the mansion? Log in to Reply pennywise555 June 6, 2013
The story and character never really worked the entire time Nichols was on the show–and without Cooper (or Nichols, oddly), who cares about Tucker anymore?
Not many except SN fans. Nichols as Tucker never worked for me but the William Russ version did, so they can fix him. I will care about Tucker, if he’s reformulated, and IF he works with Jill as a love interest. She hasn’t had one for ages and Jill needs a partner to keep the Chancellor mansion set on Y&R. Keeping Jill & the mansion on Y&R will keep me as a viewer, I was planning to leave after the funeral. Log in to Reply DanMan869 June 6, 2013 Jamey, I’ll add to my comments that I *do* like your wishful casting suggestion of Robert Newman ex-Josh, GL). His acting style would fit in quite well with Y&R. Would he move west, though? I wouldn’t mind seeing RN’s Tucker mixing it up with Nikki (the grieving “daughter”) and maybe reconnecting with either Eileen Davidson’s or even Brenda Epperson’s Ashley (the conflicted ex!). Maybe they should just create a new role for Robert Newman? Katherine’s estate attorney, perhaps? (Mitchell Sherman has to be six feet under by now.) Robert Newman would be a good addition to Y&R in some role, but I’m not 100% sure the show needs Tucker McCall back that badly. Log in to Reply soapjunkie88 June 6, 2013 Robert Newman would be awesome. I’d love to see him as Tucker. Nichols should return to DAYS or even GH. Never really enjoyed his stint on Y&R. But yeah, a lot of recasting going on on Y&R with the fate of Phyllis post-Stafford still unknown. Anyway I guess in the end it’s going to be a FOJ. Maybe James Franco is up for the challenge. He would even try to take over the part of Tucker AND Phyllis. Log in to Reply bobbyew June 6, 2013 When they recast, the fight for Chancellor will on last two days seeing that the writers don’t know how to write a good corporation storyline. Sony and CBS just need to hire writers that have written for show that consisted of corporate story telling. Can ANYBODY reach Jill now or will she become an angry recluse in that mansion? If they hadn’t stupidly made Jill a Fenmore and needlessly killed off Liz Foster, Jill could rechristen it “the Foster mansion” and they could’ve brought Liz back–once again as Jill’s conscience. Despite the fact that Brenda Dickson’s Jill really would deserve to play all the beats of that kind of story (“what happens when you get everything you thought you wanted?”) involving Katherine’s death (imagine all the flashback clips they could used with Brenda and Jeannie?!), but I think Jess could still play the hell out of that kind of story. Jill can still find romance someday, but they need to explore how Jill deals OVER A YEAR with the loss of her enemy, friend, and “mother” figure, Katherine. I think Josh could write it, but would JFP want him to tell it…? As a longtime viewer, I’d love it. Log in to Reply Coffee_Junkie June 6, 2013 I MUCH preferred William Russ as Tucker. I think they only brought on Nichols (and turned Tucker into an ass hole) because they thought Eric Braeden was leaving and they wanted another *Victor-like* character on the canvas. Log in to Reply Smitty June 6, 2013 ANOTHER RECAST….PERFECT… THE YOUNG AND THE RECASTS…THANKS JFP!!! Log in to Reply yojoromo4469 June 6, 2013
ANOTHER RECAST….PERFECT… THE YOUNG AND THE RECASTS…THANKS JFP!!!
Well, am guessing a recast TUCKER, couldn’t make the show much worse. At least, maybe less DYLAN the HACK. Log in to Reply dellygrim June 6, 2013 SN is a great actor but I’ve never enjoyed his Tucker McCall. I didn’t like the chemistry between Tucker and anyone else. The first Tucker was ok. Didn’t like him opposite Kay but he and Jill were good. I’d like to see the role recast and reworked. I’d like to see SN back at GH. Log in to Reply SoapArmageddon June 6, 2013 Kale Browne is totally in consideration for this part. That is, if he hasn’t already signed on the dotted line. When it comes to Friends of Jill, the man is probably at the very top of the list. Log in to Reply Yoryla June 6, 2013
Maybe James Franco is up for the challenge. He would even try to take over the part of Tucker AND Phyllis.
Love this! Not surprised by this in the least. I’m sure it was clear to both sides that SN was not returning while JFP is in charge. I’m sure he wasn’t even asked back. And yes, the FOJ that instantly comes to mind is of course Kale Browne. Isn’t he JFP’s ex-boyfriend??? Lol! If Tucker does return, I’m sure that will minimal effect on Jill being around. And frankly, I’ve always been repulsed by the idea that there would be anything romantic between Jill and Tucker, since they are both basically Katherine’s “children”. Log in to Reply pferrando June 6, 2013 DanMan, I think you’ve read most of our minds. And I know it’s crossed both Josh and Jill’s mind. But since we know Phelps has her own agenda with the show, we’ll never know what we’ll get. I think Josh, left alone, would probably go there. But we have that Sony thing to deal with, and JFP kissing their you know what. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed that this recast is a good sign for tons of Chancellor drama to come. (In the mansion, of course.) Log in to Reply hey mon June 6, 2013 I think it’s good that Tucker is being re-cast. At least JoshG is holding on to something from the Maria Bell era, and being ‘true’ to The Show’s history. Log in to Reply stoney07 June 6, 2013 Well it really wasn’t stated that they didn’t try to get Stephen Nichols back. it just said he won’t be returning… Log in to Reply ldylkng June 7, 2013 Who is Kale Brown? I think he might’ve been on One Life &/or Days as well, but Michael I think it’s probably his best known role or to me atleast. I was gonna say he might be a little old for the role, but I looked on IMDB & he’s only a year older than SN. So nm, lol. As for Jamey’s wishful casting, I’d absolutely LOVE to have Robert Newman back on my tv again. I loved alot of actors/actresses over the years from GL, but he’d definitely be on a short list of the ones I still sincerely miss seeing on tv with regularity. If it would happen, it’ll be hard for me to stop thinking of him as Joshua for awhile. SN a fan favorite on Y&R? lol. I never cared for him nor can I recall seeing much fanfare for him, if at all. Log in to Reply ldylkng June 7, 2013 Thank you rozzberry, Never saw him so can’t comment, but like you, Miss seeing Robert Newman! Actually, I say from now on all recasts should come from Guiding Light alums! lol. No really! Not kidding! Although I think B&B needs Kim Zimmer for John McCook immediately! Log in to Reply rozzberry June 7, 2013 No problem, Idylkng. I LOVED KB(VERY GOOD actor) as Michael until tiic had him leave Donna & get involved with Stacy(Hilary Edson, ex-Eve Guthrie on GL). That relationship with Stacy ruined Michael for me lol. Haha, fine by me (GL alums comin’ on over). I’ve been hooked watching Alan-Michael & Lucy’s relationship unfold on youtube the last few days. So much more entertaining than present soaps. Log in to Reply ldylkng June 7, 2013 Rozzberry, can you watch in order & how far back can you go? I would love to start over again, but would like to go back as far as possible & watch in order. Log in to Reply pennywise555 June 7, 2013
I remember when Russ is playing Tucker he was universally panned by the very same people calling for his return smh.
I don’t remember any problems until it was announced Stephen Nichols was going to take over, then all the sudden a bunch of new posters rushed in and told us how much better he was going to be than WR (some even referred to him as “the Pillsbury dough boy”). Oh and what else, oh yes, Victor EB and Jill JW are no longer need on Y&R, their guy is going to lead Y&R into the future. What I remember is there being a huge backlash after the first couple days of SN being in the role. It seemed to me that the same fans who loved SN’s Tucker before he even started were the same ones loving him at the end. Even some SN fans didn’t like him in the Tucker role. Yes MABs writing sucked but SN did a lazy portrayal of Tucker and it didn’t help that he had ZERO heat with Jess Walton. Josh Griffith gave it the old college try with SN & JW but SN didn’t want to, or couldn’t, play. Jill was kidding around with Tucker that he was “after her assets$” etc., etc. but he just smiles into space, no reaction no playfulness. It was like she was speaking to someone who was half asleep. Now Tristan Rogers did something with the crap he got, and his stuff was PURE crap, but he really spun some slivers of gold with it. Log in to Reply pjc722 June 7, 2013 ANOTHER DAMN RECAST?!! Seriously, do we need one? Knowing this crew he will come back 30 years old and had a friendship with Tyler in LA before. STOP WITH THE RECASTS!!! If you can’t get the main actor move on to other story. Log in to Reply NathanHastingsSr. June 7, 2013 Why recast? Stephen Nichols was fantastic in the role. It was MAB’s horrible writing that didn’t do the actor or character any justice. I remember when Russ was playing Tucker he was universally panned by the very same people calling for his return smh. Sadly, some can’t get past the fact that the Tucker character doesn’t exist solely to prop and ‘service’ Jill. JFP doesn’t do ‘over 60′ love stories, so poor Jill is still gonna do without and the viewers are facing yet another disconnect. Log in to Reply pferrando June 7, 2013 I agree. As was often the case, Maria actually brought on quite a few good characters, and then bungled them many times with the writing. Think Diane, Gen, Tucker, Patty, Ricky… I’d be fine if all were still in GC. Much better than Dylan, and Tyler IMO. Log in to Reply pennywise555 June 7, 2013

Sadly, some can’t get past the fact that the Tucker character doesn’t exist solely to prop and ‘service’ Jill.
Sadly some can’t get over the fact that Katherine & Jill have been associated with each other, and Y&R, for 40 years, and for MOST viewers the mention of either character brings the other to mind. The stroke of a writer’s pen connecting DNA doesn’t change that. They can easily undo a DNA relationship on a soap but they can’t undo decades of story in viewers memories. Sadly for SN, MAB did not connect Tucker to the other half of what Jeanne Cooper, and millions of Y&R viewers, considered a super couple so he isn’t of much value now. What’s more is Stephen Nichols Tucker wasn’t onscreen with Kay very often. He spent a majority of his time with YoHarmony, Sophia, Ashley, Gen, Abby, and/or Devon. Most of those are gone now. Stephen Nichols was on the program for 3 short years, and they were the awful, poorly rated, MAB years at that. Y&R has kept its core vets for 10, 20, 30, and even 40 years, so 3 years is insignificant. I couldn’t even name all the actors and/or characters that ran for 3 years on Y&R, and I’ll bet most others couldn’t either. Associated with Katherine Chancellor/ approx years onscreen Jill – 40 Nikki- 34 Victor-33 Ester -31 Gina Roma-27 John Abbott-24 Christine-20 Brock-19 Nina-18 Little Phillip/Chance-14 Liz Foster-13 Billy Abbott-13 Phillip 3- 10 Mitchell Sherman- 10 Derek-9 Rex Sterling- 8 Larry Warton- 8 Mackenzie-7 Murphy-6 Brittany-6 Chloe-7 Cane-6 Amber -4 Tucker -3 Log in to Reply pennywise555 June 7, 2013

JFP doesn’t do ‘over 60′ love stories, so poor Jill is still gonna do without and the viewers are facing yet another disconnect.
I haven’t followed Jill & Kay for 40 years for a love story. Y&R, unlike Days, has never been all about super couples, but romantic & sexual chemistry between those of the opposite sex is needed to fuel the drama. Log in to Reply ChristianDavis148 June 7, 2013 As for Kale Brown, he actually did a very, very short stint on Y&R. He was never seen though. He was only heard. He did a voice over stint as a radio disc jockey for some storyline. He was only for a day or two at the most. So, having Kale back in the role of Tucker wouldn’t be that bad of an idea, but like I said in comment # 2, why, oh why do we need Tucker back at all? The character was a snore during the entire 3 year run it was on Y&R. Log in to Reply hey mon June 8, 2013 Dont need to put down Maria Arena Bell, but you are right… Here is a couple more: Danny Romalotti – 24 years Marge Catrook – 19 years Dena Mergaron – 8 years Log in to Reply Dyllan June 8, 2013 I wonder if Tucker is writing the posts about the Winters family. I see Devon’s connection in this storyline. Log in to Reply ChristianDavis148 June 8, 2013 UPDATE: Per Soap Opera Digest, Y&R has decided AGAINST recasting the role of Tucker McCall because in their words, “decided it would be too distracting to have a new face in the mix.” So, Tucker will NOT be back for Katherine’s funeral and Stephen Nichols will also not be back either. Log in to Reply pferrando June 9, 2013 A new face in the mix… It’s funny for them to say that now after ALL the new faces that are ALREADY in the mix.
